Education

Bachelor of Landscape Architecture Horticulture Minor, University of Georgia, Athens “To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.” - Aldo Leopold My love for nature has always led me toward a career that revolves around it. Finding landscape architecture was the perfect solution. A passion for building with the environment stems from weekend camping trips with my family. Those weekends drove me to find ways to shape the environment so others could enjoy the experience of nature no matter how urban the location is.

URBAN EXPLORATIONS

MARSHVIEW-Regional Analysis Looking through the lens of New Urbanism, I began designing a community based around pedestrian access to city centers. I built out from the middle of a five-minute walking radius or a quarter mile. Through orthogonal street layouts and roundabouts, pedestrians can easily navigate the different designs of each development pocket. Taking inspiration from walkable cities such as Paris, France, and Decatur, Georgia, commercial buildings revolve around the city center and thin out toward the perimeter. Mixed-use residential and commercial spaces connect the community to the urban center. River vistas and access remind residents of their responsibilities to the conserved ecosystem surrounding them. Mixing affordable housing into single-family home neighborhoods unites neighborhoods together. Different scales of commercial districts promote movement between developments and foster connections across communities. Clusters of development leave the surrounding land conserved for wildlife and hiking trails. Visitors to the site can explore the nature center, campgrounds, hotel, and bungalow homes located in the heart of the marsh. Marshview strives to create a walkable and social community where the pedestrian scale encourages people to live active daily lives.

James City County, Virginia

Coastal Virginia is home to many diverse animal and plant species. James City County along the York River is a mass of marshes, longleaf and slash pine forests, and coastal plants. It’s home to the Bald Eagle, which is protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. These preserved lands also harbour endangered species such as the Spotted Turtle, Blue-winged Teal, Little BLue Heron, Long-eared Owl, and the Mabee’s Salamander to name a few.

By studying regional qualities, I analyzed the existing hydrology, resources, and life on the site. On the left, a flora and fauna study provides insight into endangered and native species. Through focusing on preserving their habitat, I worked to connect patrons with their surroundings. This design includes the main connecting greenway and recreation area facing and working around the marsh. The above two maps delineating scenic rivers, conservation lands, and historic sites give context to the site and region.

The orthogonal layout of the streets makes it walkable and easy to navigate. The grid layout inspired my design creating blocks and sectors.

Performance Space

The nature center is a hub for the community and a way to get in touch with the conservation land all around the residents. The center holds educational and social values offering patrons a variety of activities such as walking on the pier, bringing their children to the playground (located around the back), dining at the restaurant, going to an educational show, or gazing over the marsh from the rooftop pavilion.

My up close development focused on the recreational lake and bungalow homes located behind my hotel. Pavilions and picnic tables in the center provide amenities to the homes and people at the beach. Native trees, shrubs, and grasses populate the land surrounding the lake. A one-way road surrounding the site minimizes car traffic and creates a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.

Connection crossing

Connection Crossing bridges downtown Athens and the UGA campus together. Along the connecting edge to the city are retail, apartments, a public skatepark, and a courtyard for outdoor markets. A large green space helps the transition to school buildings. This shared space between the campus and downtown fosters community between students and full-time residents. This new part of campus offers open-air classrooms for teachers to schedule and lots of outdoor study spaces for students.

I based this concept on curvilinear organic forms inspired by the premise of an intertwined community. Curving paths flow throughout the site branching off and connecting to others giving patrons many ways to traverse the site. Along the path and within the enclaves are sculptures providing exploration and intrigue as people make their trek across campus. Within the paths are gardens, picnic tables, and study spots all students can take advantage of between classes.

Concepts

Experimenting with different kinds of forms allowed me to explore movement through space. Each design has different benefits and gives the site a special character. I ultimately choose to follow a curvilinear style in my design because of the fluid movement in the pathways.

One of the difficulties of this project was the restriction of only one tree and one shrub to populate the site. I choose Dogwoods and Gardenias.

Community Connections

Massing Model

Built around walkability, nature access, and inviting public spaces, the Hill Street District brings people together with various public and private areas. Our design’s purpose focuses on creating a site for pedestrians by connecting each piece with walking paths and trails. Beginning with loose sketches of a double roundabout road connecting the site, my partner and I began to give each space its personality. Creating land buffers through plantings we sectioned off neighborhoods from public retail spaces. Hill Street District’s design is intended to create smaller districts within the site as a whole.

Cherry tree homes Located along West Broad Street in Athens, GA, Cherry Tree Homes is a perfect community for families and couples looking to be close to downtown and local schools. Noise along the main road is buffered with planting and a spacious sidewalk. Eightyfour units with three varying sizes provide a range of pricing and styles. Amenities within the community include a koi pond, park, grill, and patio area, and a pool. Sidewalks within and around the community allow patrons to comfortably move through the space and give children the freedom to move around safely

LUMION PERSPECTIVES

Residential Design

Shaded Serenity The spreading and mounding plant forms contrast the upright architecture of the house. Located in Virginia, this home’s front entrance is facing the south. I chose flowering part shade and full sun plants to provide seasonal interest. Flowering trees frame the walkway creating a sense of enclosure and sense of place. The private, shaded yard separates the house and street from each other. The tightening and opening of yard space create a different experience for the user in each part of the landscape.

BackYard escape

Backyard Escape is designed for a family who wants lots of entertainment and play space. The house is built next to a ravine which led to walls and bridges being needed throughout the site. The water flows away from the house and retaining walls are used to flatten the site. This residential backyard is fitted with a pool, hot tub, bar, grill, dining space, firepit area, and a private Japanese garden. A large lawn in the center provides space for recreational activities and for kids to run around. The pool and bar area are connected intertwining an outdoor and covered space.

Pool Perspective Hand Render

The organic movement of the planting beds and patios unites the hardscape with the unique forms of the landscape. A special feature of this backyard design includes a tree growing right next to the pool creating shade in the summer. A moon gate leads into a separated Japanese-style sand and rock garden. The master bedroom has a direct view of this more private area.
