The following study deals with the housing crisis in Italy. The aim is to demonstrate that is possible to supply the housing demand by recovering the public obsolete properties. The object of analysis is the Roma population who never had easy access to a stable housing. At the hosting request of the gypsy people, Italy has always responded with the camps policies. This response arises from the incorrect assumption that all Roma are nomads and they base their living culture in the camps.
This research investigates a specific case of the complex reality of Rome, where the housing crisis of the Italian population is combined with the Roma population one. The objective is to demonstrate the widespread abandonment of the camps politics to promote a diversified approach to the different housing needs, as happens for all citizens. The study focused on the real experience of a Kosovo community currently living in a last generation camp in the Rome suburb.
