CORTEZ – According to County Commissioner Carol Whitmore, representatives of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will be meeting individually with some county commissioners this week to discuss design options for a fixed span bridge that would replace the existing Cortez Bridge.

BRADENTON BEACH – The Bradenton Beach Police Department has adopted a zerotolerance policy that resulted in Freckled Fin owner Scott Lubore getting arrested last week for a noise ordinance violation.

Two weeks ago, Lubore was warned that any more viola-

tions would result in an arrest, and the repercussions of that arrest are now being felt elsewhere on Bridge Street.

The police report says Officer Steve Masi was in his patrol car at Fourth Street South at 8:23 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, and heard live music that seemed too loud. After determining the Freckled Fin was the source, Masi used a calibrated decibel meter to take a sound measurement while standing across see noise, page 37

Easter fun for kids and adults

Enjoy Easter worship: Island style In addition to the Easter morning Sunrise Service at the beach, the Island’s churches have their own services.

Kids will again hunt for Easter eggs on the beach at the Sandbar restaurant on Saturday, April 15.

The restaurant will serve refreshments, including coffee, starting at 8:30 a.m. and then the kids will migrate to beach, where the Easter Bunny has left a bunch of colorful eggs.

This event is sponsored by the Chiles Group and The Sun newspaper. This is the 15th year the Sun newspaper has been a sponsor.

Kids need to bring an Easter basket or bag to hold their eggs.

Parking will be available in parking lots at the Sandbar, at adjacent lots on Gulf Drive and at Anna Maria City Hall or at CrossPointe Fellowship at 8605 Gulf Drive. Taking the free trolley is a good way to leave parking hassles at home.

HOLMES BEACH – The beauty of the Kiwanis Club of Anna Maria Island’s Easter Sunrise Service draws thousands of worshippers from Manatee and Sarasota Counties to Manatee County Public Beach every year. This year’s outdoor celebration starts after 6 a.m., when the Manatee Beach Café opens for coffee and the free Island trolleys start their day. Attendees are urged to bring a blanket or beach chair and dress for the weather.

Kiwanis Club members will set up the stage, cross and sound system, and members of all six churches will deliver

a Christian service. Bring money for the offertory because the money collected is distributed equally among the churches.

Later in the day, those who slept in will have Easter services to attend at their church of choice. Here’s a lineup of services for the week before and Easter.

Privateer injured in cannon mishap

Adult soccer kicks off at Center Score a goal at The Center of Anna Maria Island as a part of its adult co-ed soccer league.

Delaney Peterson art featured The Artists’ Guild of Anna Maria Island, at 5414 Gulf Drive in Holmes Beach, will be displaying the artwork of Delaney Peterson for the month of April. Delaney is a 17-year-old senior in William Ferrell’s art class at Braden River High School. Delaney’s digital painting is entitled “PEACHY.” She has exhibited her artwork in the charity event submitted Heart and Soul and won a medal of excellence for her artwork displayed in the superintendent’s gallery through the school board. Delaney plans to attend State College of Florida in Bradenton.

Privateer John Swager was hurt when a miniature cannon fired unexpectedly.

BRADENTON BEACH – Anna Maria Island Privateer John Swager was injured Saturday evening in an accident involving the ceremonial firing of the Privateers’ miniature cannon.

Privateer Tim “Hammer” Thompson was on hand when the accident occurred, and Sunday morning he explained what happened.

“We were going out to the beach to do a sunset pirate memorial for longtime member Grant Beer, who passed away. He was cremated, and we we’re going to put some ashes in the cannon and fire it off in farewell.

“As John was positioning the cannon to fire it, it went off by accident and got his left hand. It was a pure accident. Big John has fired that cannon hundreds of times,” Thompson said.

“As far as the damage goes, to the best of my knowledge, he’s going to lose the index finger on his left hand.

He went through three hours of surgery last night at Blake.

“His prognosis is good. He has movement in all four remaining fingers, his blood flow is good and more than likely he will require some additional surgery. We estimate he’s going to be there for at least three days,” he explained.

Bradenton Beach Police Chief Sam Speciale talked to Swager on Sunday and provided some additional clarity on the what happened.

“The cannon fell and he went to grab it, hit the firing pin and it set if off,” Speciale said.

Authorities warn of rental fraud instances The Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce urges vacationers to use known businesses to rent a place to stay.

ANN MARIA – Recently, three families arrived on the Island to find out the vacation homes in the city of Anna Maria they rented via Craigslist were not for rent.

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Russ Schnering said they were informed about those instances, but it’s difficult to trace where the rent money went because they were directed to wire it straight to a private account.

“If they had used Pay Pal or another venue, we might be able to find out who received the money,” he said. “One family turned around and went back to New York after finding out the rental was not

legitimate while another went to the Chamber for help.”

Schnering had some suggestions for people looking to rent a vacation home online.

“Don’t wire the money because it can’t be traced,” he said. “Watch for misspelled words or grammatical errors in the ad because the people offering the phony rentals might be in foreign countries, and look for properties through local firms at your destination. Call a property management or real estate firm and get suggestions from the local chamber of commerce.”

The Island Chamber has also had to deal with fraudulent rentals recently, according to Chamber President Deb Wing.

“We had one on with a North Shore Drive address that wasn’t legit,” she said. “When they arrived and called the phone number they were given, the person told them to talk with the manager and hung up on them. When they called back, nobody answered the phone.”

Wing said too many times people jump at an offer that looks too good to be true and likely it is.

“The rents on the Island vacation properties are pretty much the same,” she said. “The ones on the beach are the most expensive and rarely get reduced, and the ones further from the beach are less expensive.”

She said demand is high, so prices tend to stay at the same level. She also said if you do run into a fraudulent situation, call your local police because that’s where the fraud was committed and also tell authorities in the location of the property so they know what’s going on.

Wing said renters can look up real estate and rental management firms on the internet or call the local chamber for a recommendation.

“Renting a property that really isn’t available and finding out you lost your money and don’t have a place to stay would be devastating,” she said.

Jetty dredging approved The Anna Maria Commission has approved a $150,610 contract with Gator Dredging to dredge the jetty at the mouth of the Lake La Vista canal. The sand removed from the jetty area will help replenish the beach next to the Anna Maria City Pier. When approving the contract, Commissioner Brian Seymour stressed the importance of finding a long-term solution that would one day alleviate the need for the dredging that occurs every two years or so.

EDITORIAL Face the music

T

he recent arrest of a business owner for a noise violation seems out of tune with Bridge Street and the police department’s community policing approach.

The arrest was preceded by a stern warning prompted by a chorus of complaints from those who reside within earshot. The arrest was music to the ears of some, but it struck a sour note with those who depend on live music and now face the threat of jail for a single noise violation.

The reverberations of this new no-nonsense policy may be felt at city hall, and city commissioners might want to revisit the noise ordinance adopted in 2014. If so, commissioners should not be tone deaf to the concerns of those that do not belong to the vocal minority that represents only one chord in the city’s musical collage.

Suggestions for commissioners:

• Specify the number of warnings and citations given before an arrest occurs; • Maintain a noise threshold of 75 db., but require sound measurements taken 100 feet from the venue’s property line.

Or measure from the property line, and increase the threshold to 85 decibels; • Increase noise violation fines and escalate fines for repeat offenders; • Consider allowing outdoor music at 75 db. until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Suggestions for venues:

• Take regular sound readings and share them with your musicians; •Hire bands that respect the noise ordinance and replace those that don’t; • Deduct the cost of a noise violations from the band’s pay; • Insist that bands stop on time – a minute early is better than a minute late; • Respect your residential neighbors; • Voice your concerns to city commissioners; Suggestions for musicians: •Be volume conscious, and police yourselves; •Install a sound meter on your cell phone and ask a friend to check your volume; • Guitar amps and sound systems come with volume settings. Turn the volume knob to the left or push the slider down and the volume will magically decrease.

Drummers: hit the skins a little lighter; • When the adrenaline and/or alcohol kicks in, don’t turn up; •Voice your concerns to city commissioners.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Around in circles So traffic circles are planned for Holmes Beach to encourage a “continuous flow of traffic,” said City Engineer Lynn Burnett. I live off of 42nd street and Sixth Ave. Trying to get out onto Gulf Drive is nearly impossible now. Only the red light stopping traffic for an instant, and the occasional kindness of a driver allowing me out, makes it possible.

When the circle is installed, and the continuous flow occurs, it will be truly impossible. The alternative for me and all that live between Gulf Drive and 44th Street is to travel north on the back roads, and hope someone lets us make a left turn onto Gulf many blocks away.

I wish FDOT, the City Engineer, and all others in the decision making process would have considered the future plight of the residents in this area.

Watching your business grow is a wonderful thing, but watching your children grow is really what touches your heart. When you’re lucky enough to see your children become successful in your business, well that’s a heart exploding event.

Air & Energy Air, Plumbing & Electrical based on Anna Maria Island has been a family run business for 34 years. Several years ago, Stewart Moon, Sr. retired and made way for his son Stewart Moon, Jr. to become one of the principals of the business along with his mother Trudy Moon, who remains active in the business.

house space for their equipment, but also private offices, training room, conference room, a workout room for employees and a full kitchen. The general work area is scattered with state-of-art computers to keep track of dispatched customer service calls, as well as all facets of this growing business. Trudy Moon says she is “very proud” of how great the building came out.

In addition, Stewart Moon, Jr. explains they have maintained their former space in Holmes Beach to be used as a staging area for Anna Maria and Longboat Key calls. Center board works to close financial gap At the close of February reporting, the Center faces a $155,800 shortfall for the year.

ANNA MARIA — There’s good news and bad news for The Center of Anna Maria Island.

The good news is the Center nearly broke even in February, ending the month with a $700 shortfall including administration and overhead expenses, according to financial reports presented by Treasurer Jim Froeschle at the April 3 board meeting.

The nonprofit also received its first financial support from one of the three Island cities by way of a $5,000 donation from the city of Bradenton Beach.

While both Anna Maria and Holmes Beach have funds allocated to donate to the Center or other community nonprofits, neither city commission has promised or released any funds to the organization. Anna Maria also helps support the Center by allowing the nonprofit to lease the city-owned parcel of land its building occupies for $1 annually.

The bad news is the Center is going into its slower spring and summer seasons with a $155,800 shortfall for the fiscal year, which ends June 30.

The numbers do not include March, which saw the Center host its annual Tour of Homes and a Rat Pack tribute dinner show.

“We are working every angle to close the gap,” Froeschle said.

Center Executive Director Kristen Lessig said she’s still hopeful the other two Island cities will come through with some form of financial support for the organization.

She’s planning on presenting the latest financial figures at upcoming meetings to both city commissions and hopes supporters of the Center will join her.

“We need to show we are providing a community service,” she said.

“It’s a political problem that needs a political solution,” Froeschle said.

Board member Ed Chiles expressed concern about the “narrative” in the community about the center.

“This is the most important nonprofit on the Island,” he said.

“People need to come to the center to see it for themselves.”

Chiles added that board members donate to help decrease the organization’s financial shortfall along with $10,000 per year donated by Lessig from her salary.

Event coordinator Lindsay Sauls said the Rat Pack tribute event raised $3,500 with only 100 tickets sold.

On a brighter note, she said the Tour of Homes sold nearly 800 tickets, raising $27,000 for the center.

Though the funds didn’t quite equal the amount the organization was looking for, a budgeted $35,000, Sauls said it was a positive event.

Lessig said an additional $6,000 was raised from boutique sales and quilt raffle tickets.

Changes are planned for next year’s Tour including relocating the boutique to the center to coincide with the food stop. The refreshments available at the center also will be advertised on official Tour transportation. Ticket prices also are planned to increase from $20 to $25 each.

“It’s a big event to organize,” Lessig said, thanking Sauls and other volunteers for their efforts. “I think it will continue to grow.”

The center’s next event will be a community crawfish boil and Kentucky Derby viewing party May 6.

Sauls said the event is open to the public and expects about 200 people to attend. The event is sponsored by Christine Hicks, who previously hosted a similar party at her home.

In addition to crawfish, the menu includes jambalaya, red beans and rice, bread and a cash bar. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. and tickets are $40 for adults or $10 for children.

CORTEZ – On a pleasant, sunny, spring day on Saturday, longtime Cortez residents welcomed newcomers on the Miller dock at the annual Cortez community picnic.

As the mullet, shrimp, hush puppies and guava bars disappeared, students at the Manatee School for the Arts explained how they made the nautical-themed artwork on display, including intaglio – etching fish designs on plexiglass plates, rubbing ink into the crevices and printing them on old navigational charts.

Other artworks included a watercolor of whales and dolphins in a fish bowl, a pastel sea turtle, a painting of Lake Titicaca by a Peruvian student and a print of fish found in the Red Sea. Students discussed what inspired them, such as a visit to an aquarium to see an eel and a music video that featured underwater “monsters.�

How we got the Easter bunny

We Irish Catholics are big on the Catholic system of Mysteries.

There are Joyful Mysteries and Glorious Mysteries and lots more.

St Patrick explained the Mystery of the Holy Trinity with a shamrock.

My grandfather had three sisters that were nuns – Sister Catherine, Sister Mary and Sister Elizabeth. He called them the “Three Sorrowful Mysteries.”

My grandfather practiced his own version of Catholicism. It was kinda Catholic Lite – with a bowling ball rattling around in it.

Aside from the Sisters I also had two great uncles that were Monsignors.

My grandmother used to say, “Would have been bishops both, but for the drink.”

I understood a Monsignor to be almost-a-bishop. They didn’t get a ring

but they didn’t have to sit in the back all the time when they drove in a car.

In kindergarten I got in trouble because of all my religious relatives.

We called our teacher Sister Fearless because everyone was afraid of her, and we could not imagine her ever being afraid of anyone or any thing.

Sister Fearless was teaching us the Saints. She asked us to name some.

I said “Saint Flo." She said there was no Saint Flo. I said there was. She said there wasn’t. I insisted there was.

She got angry. I became adamant. She made me sit in the corner.

My grandmother’s name was Flo. The two Monsignors and the Three Sorrowful Mysteries would talk of grandad and then they would speak in hushed tones of my grandmother.

They would hang their heads and then roll their eyes to heaven and murmur prayerfully, “Flo is a saint.” and “Shure and Begorah, Flo is a saint.” and “Sure as there is a God in heaven, Flo is a saint.”

If they said so it had to be true. My grandmother Flo was a saint.

I figured I had Sister Fearless beat flat. She was just one Sister and I had raised her three Sisters and a pair of Monsignors.

One of the great mysteries of the Catholic faith is how the Easter Bunny and chocolate got involved with Easter.

I once asked my grandfather about the Easter Bunny.

Grandad hunkered down and started to mess with his pipe – scraping it, tapping it, filling the bowl with tobacco.

I realized later that when inclined to yarn large he gave himself time to think by messing with his pipe.

This gave me valuable insight into the behavior of lawyers and politicians.

I suspect there are a lot of pipes in the White House.

Grandad always referred to the Three Wise Men as the “Three Wise Guys.”

It was a sarcastic reference. He used to make fun of them for showing up late for Christmas with inappropriate gifts.

He lit his pipe and started. “Well, after the Three Wise Guys messed

CORTEZ – Giving back is no joke to the folks at Swordfish Grill & Tiki Bar, who raised over $3,500 at their charity event on April Fool’s Day. Throughout the week, members of the Swordfish Grill’s management team stepped up and stepped behind the bar for guest bartending shifts in which they donated their tips to Cycle For Survival, a charity benefiting rare cancer research.

The fund-raising efforts culminated Saturday with a blow-out happy hour hosted and emceed by Bob Slicker, general manager and former Swordfish Grill bartender.

Slicker and his daughter, Molly, initially got involved with Cycle For Survival to honor Chris Hughes, an “incredible youth mentor” and former Bradenton resident who passed away from cancer four years ago on Easter Sunday.

What started with the pursuit of a cause important to the Slicker family became an extended family affair when the staff

and friends of the Swordfish Grill came together to share and contribute in their unique and personal ways.

Swordfish Grill team members Adam Sears, Kat Humphrey and Amber Hahn joined Slicker in donating their bartending tips. Owner John Banyas shucked oysters, and Tim Chandler provided the live music. Captain Lance Plowman donated the tips from his charter fishing trip. Robert DiMino, from U.S. Foods, provided the oysters consumed in exchange for donations, and Darwin Brewing Company matched the money raised by the beer sales.

“We had a lot of selfless pieces coming together to provide laughs, libations and life-change,” Slicker said.

Through tip donations, online fundraising and sale percentage donations, Swordfish Grill and its patrons generously contributed over $6,000 to the cause in just one week.

“This is a beautiful result of the positive power of community. And in Cortez, it takes a village,” Slicker said.

Cortez takes spotlight at scenic highway joint meeting Big traffic pattern changes are proposed for an intersection granting access to village of Cortez.

BRADENTON — One Cortez Village intersection is taking the blame for traffic congestion on the mainland and in Bradenton Beach.

On April 5, members of the Palma Sola Scenic Highway and Tamiami Trail Scenic Highway Corridor Management Entities, along with members of the Bradenton Beach Scenic WAVES Committee met for an annual joint meeting to discuss the progress each has made over the past year and plans for the future. However, a Florida Department of Transportation presentation on planned changes to the intersection of Cortez Road and 119th Street stole the show.

FDOT District 1 Traffic Safety Program Engineer David Wheeler presented the assembled representatives with a drafted plan to reduce congestion along Cortez Road by eliminating left turns at the intersection and creating a virtually free-flowing eastbound lane from Bradenton Beach.

For traffic flowing westbound toward Anna Maria Island, the right turn lane will remain as-is according to Wheeler. Left turns at the traffic light to access the south side of the village, including restaurants, docks, the Florida Maritime Museum and the Cortez Cultural Center, will be eliminated. Westbound drivers will be diverted to 121st Street to turn left and travel through a residential section of the village or make a U-turn at 121st Street. Drivers coming from the north

On the south side of the intersection, which primarily accesses a residential district, motorists will be able to turn left or right on Cortez Road.

Wheeler said the data collected by FDOT didn’t show sufficient traffic to maintain the left hand turn lanes at the intersection.

Bradenton Beach Commissioner John Chappie disagreed. He’s observed large amounts of traffic traveling down 119th Street south to access the marina and restaurants, including vehicles pulling large boats to the docks.

“They would have to go through a strictly residential area and that’s a huge problem,” he said. “I can’t see how that would work for the south side of the village.”

Chappie added that decreasing the commercial access to the village also could potentially negatively affect the fishermen and businesses.

“This is not the answer for the village of Cortez,” said Tjet Martin, cochair of the Bradenton Beach Scenic WAVES Committee.

Wheeler said the primary reasons for the proposed changes include reduction of traffic congestion, vehicular accidents and misuse of center turn lanes by drivers attempting to merge.

Construction on the project is planned for two phases, beginning late summer or early fall to complete the first phase by the end of the year.

The first phase would be to modify the traffic signal. All construction and road restriping, including the striping of a bicycle lane on Cortez Road, is scheduled to be completed within a six month period.

A public hearing on the project will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at the Cortez Road Baptist Church, 4411 110th St. W., Bradenton.

Vacation rental bill in limbo

TALLAHASSEE – The vacation rental bill, SB 188, filed by Sen. Greg Steube (R-Sarasota) is currently stalled in the Florida Senate’s Community Affairs Committee chaired by Sen. Tom Lee (R-Brandon).

The bill was discussed briefly at the end of the committee’s April 3 meeting at which Steube and Lee

introduced amendments that would still allow for local rental registration programs. The amendments were deemed favorable by the committee, but time ran out before the committee could rule on the amended bill in its entirety.

It is now up to Lee to determine if the bill will be discussed at a future Community Affairs Committee meeting. As of Monday, no committee meeting had been scheduled. If the bill does

not eventually pass through this committee and get forwarded to the Rules Committee that includes Sen. Bill Galvano (R-Bradenton), the bill would be considered dead; and House Bill 425 filed State Rep. Mike La Rosa (R-St Cloud) would die with it.

As of now, the final committee stop for HB 425 would be Commerce Committee. As of Monday, the next Commerce Committee had not been scheduled.

s the year speeds along, another holiday is upon us. Easter has always been a time for family, church and food.

When I was young, a new Easter outfit, complete with a hat and gloves, was always a necessity for church on Easter Sunday. My grandmother made many dresses for my sister and me. The dresses were usually identical, which made us look like twins, even though we were a year apart in age. I look back now and realize how lucky we were to have those outfits handcrafted for us.

After church on Easter Sunday, my family spent the day hiding Easter eggs with cousins and consuming mounds of food. Aunt Helen always made the best ham. My mother is the youngest of 13 children, so there was lots of food and lots of cousins. This was life in rural North Carolina. In many ways it’s similar to life anywhere – family, church and food.

As you gather with family and search for fun activities for kids of all ages, consider setting up a cookie activity table.

Cookie baking and decorating doesn’t have to be expensive. If you don’t have a large supply of cookie cutters, simply use the rim of various sized drinking glasses. Dip the rim into a small amount of flour before cutting out the cookie to prevent the dough from sticking to the glass.

Try experimenting with fondant to cover the cookies. Fondant really has

Texture can be added by rubbing different kitchen utensils over the fondant. You can even make marbled patterns by mixing colors together. The fondant easily adheres to the cookie if you lightly brush the cookie with a small amount of corn syrup or water. You can find fondant

in small sample packs at craft stores or anywhere cake supplies are sold.

The following cookie recipe is a good basic recipe to use for cut outs. The beauty of this recipe is that the cookies hold their shape and don’t spread too much during baking, so the same cookie cutter can be used for both the cookie and the fondant covering.

With an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, vanilla and lemon extracts. Mix until incorporated.

In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt. Gradually add to the butter mixture until incorporated.

Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour. *Roll out cookies on a floured surface. Cut into shapes.

Place cut out cookies on a parchment lined cookie sheet.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes until golden brown around edges.

Get a later start and let things heat up

Well, the winds have picked back up here in our area, and coming from the north, it's brought the temperature down with it. These conditions can make for tough fishing. But if you can find the cubbyholes and shorelines that are protected, it can pay off immensely.

We at Anna Maria Charters have been focusing our efforts on the big spotted sea trout, snook and redfish along the mangroves. The mornings have been giving us a nice incoming tide to start the day out right. As the sun warms the water, and the tide flushes in new life, the bite turns on pretty good.

My advice is to get a little later start and let things heat up a bit.

The trout fishing has been very productive lately. With fish up to 24 inches being caught on our boats. A shiner under a popping cork is working well.

And for flies, a deceiver works as does a green clouser for the deeper flat. I found that in a flat over 4 feet, a 8-10 second

count before stripping will get your fly to the necessary depth to encourage a strike.

Bear in mind, you're only allowed one trout over 20 inches a day! So we gotta let the breeders go. But there's plenty of 15-20's to go around.

Redfish and snook are being caught in the same manner. But I tend to chum these fish much more than the trout.

Getting them comfortable eating shiners before slipping them a mickey.

With a wind forecast of 25-mph + for Monday, we opted to snook fish the night before. They each caught and released their first snook and had steady action on my Grassett Snook Minnow fly.

Barry Slee, from Lake Forest, Ill., and Paul Browring, from the UK, fished a couple of days in the Terra Ceia area with me on Tuesday and Thursday.

They had good action catching and releasing a total of more than 15 snook, several reds, flounder and a Spanish mackerel on CAL jigs with shad tails.

Bill Morrison, from Anna Maria Island, and Gary Marple, from Sarasota, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Wednesday and Jim Festa and Rich Nastan, both also from Sarasota, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Friday. They had some action with trout, Spanish mackerel and bluefish on Ultra Hair Clouser flies and CAL jigs with shad tails.

I was the instructor for a CB’s Saltwater Outfitters Orvis-Endorsed Fly Fishing School on Saturday, which was last school of the spring season. Classes will resume in the fall, but in the meantime, I’m available for private fly casting instruction.

Bridge Tender digs deep for senior dogs The Vintage Paws Sanctuary provides shelter for older dogs.

BRADENTON BEACH – As of Sunday afternoon, the staff and patrons at the Bridge Tender Inn and Dockside Bar had raised close to $9,000 for the Vintage Paws Sanctuary in Sarasota.

Operating with limited space, the Sarasota-based Vintage Paws Sanctuary provides shelter to older dogs whose owners have passed away or can no longer care for them. Some of the dogs have been abandoned at shelters and deemed unadoptable due to age or illness.

Headed by Bridge Tender Inn managers Sue Shinka and Shannon Dunnan and owner Fred Bartizal, the fundraising endeavor began the weekend of April 7 and continued through last weekend.

“We had so much stuff donated we’re doing it again this weekend,” Shinka said earlier in the week.

“We put together one big package that was over $1,500 and raffled that off last week; and we did a bunch of individual raffles too, like when Brigid’s Cross played,” Shinka added.

When asked why Vintage Paws has become the Bridge Tender Inn’s annual charity of choice, Dunnan said, “We’ve all had little old dogs. I have a little old dog.

“This is really a good charity, and they’re underdogs,” Shinka said.

“We love dogs and Vintage Paws,” Bartizal said earlier in the week.

According to the Vintage Paws website, “The goal of Vintage Paws is to give senior and terminally-ill dogs a home of their own. Vintage Paws will raise funding through grants, fundraising and private donors to build these dogs a home to live out their remaining days, months or years.

“Vintage Paws will educate the public about caring for their senior dogs and ways to make the senior years more enjoyable for the dog and the owner.

Vintage Paws will obtain pet therapy certification for eligible dogs so they may be ambassadors for senior dogs and provide therapy to nursing home residents, children and the community.”

HBPD plants pinwheels for kids Blue pinwheels shine in the sunlight along the front lawn of city hall, bringing a dark reminder to light.

Holmes Beach Police officers placed the pinwheels along the sidewalk as a part of the Manatee County Children’s Services Pinwheels for Prevention campaign.

The idea is to bring awareness during the month of April to child

abuse prevention.

Each pinwheel represents “the happy, healthy childhoods all children deserve,” Holmes Beach Police Chief Bill Tokajer said in an April 4 press release.

Tokajer has served for 22 years as the president of Manatee County Children’s Services.

BRADENTON BEACH – On Saturday, April 22, The Drift In will host a benefit for Bradenton resident Sarah Fazioli to assist in the recovery of her kidney removal surgery on the 18th.

Sarah’s father, Bill Fazioli, a longtime Bradenton Beach resident, is organizing the benefit that will take place from 1 to 7 p.m. at 120 Bridge St. in Bradenton Beach. The proceeds will help offset Sarah’s medical, recovery and living expenses.

The benefit will feature live music by Mac-n-Mac and Doug Bidwell, a lotto board, and raffles that will include a giant liquor basket and gift certificates donated by local businesses.

Chef Donald White, from the BeachHouse restaurant, is assisting Fazioli in the at-cost acquisition of the food offerings that will include pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, cole slaw and more.

Last October, doctors discovered a mass on Sarah’s kidney, and her previously-scheduled surgery was delayed until this month.

“It’s been one year of hell with her health,” Fazioli said of his daughter, who along with her boyfriend, Jake Davis, is raising a young child.

Her last day working as the wedding coordinator for The Chiles Group will be April 19.

ANNA MARIA – Buried behind the Sandbar restaurant pavilion in the headquarters of the Chiles Group, Patti McKee answers another phone call from a couple wanting to say “I do” on the beach. She listens to their needs and calms their fears and after considerable preparation, another McKee couple ties the knot.

After 20-plus years of being that calm voice, McKee is retiring and moving to Illinois, where her family lives.

“I have three kids, four grandchildren and my mother just turned 97,” she said. “I want to be with them in my retirement.”

McKee’s journey to becoming a wedding event specialist for possibly the busiest beach wedding venue in the county was interesting. She began her career as a server and then-manager Gary Wooten promoted her to assistant manager.

When owner Ed Chiles expanded the Sandbar and with an interest in becoming a wedding destination, she became the coordinator.

“Patti has an incredible heart for service,” Chiles said.

“She does a great job making sure that the most special day in a couple’s life is done in a way that exceeds their expectations. “ McKee said she’ll miss the people.

Slim’s Place takes the first win

The community center pitch came alive again on Saturday for three competitive recreational youth soccer games. With new teams created and the merging of two age divisions to create the 11- to 14-year-old league, coaches and teammates worked to try to find the chemistry on the field that would take them to victory in the season spring season.

Coach Jesse Brisson, for Slim’s Place, was fortunate enough to have two seasoned powerhouses on his team with Gregory Jordan and Aiden Templeton.

Both players have honed their soccer skills at the center, bringing up their game with each season.

For Brisson, Connor Samblis will be the player to watch along with Gabe Hoover. Hoover and Jordan work their skills together off Island as well as teammates in another soccer club.

Wash Family Construction’s coach Kris Yavalar is starting from scratch with his squad. In the first couple of games of each season, working out the kinks, discovering each player’s strengths, and coming together as a team are the goals for many teams.

Yavalar’s experience on the field as a player will ultimately shine as he leads his daughter’s team through the season.

Starting predictably strong, Jordan scored the first goal after five minutes of play, quickly giving Slim’s Place a one-point lead.

Templeton and Jordan show their experience and growth on the field with strong passing and communication, making multiple runs to the goal.

Wash Family Construction’s goalie Dalton Fox showed grace under pressure during the game with multiple shots taken during the 40-minute game. His saves under the rapid fire of Team Slim’s Place kept the score at 1-0, while the soccer ball remained on Wash’s side of the field.

Slim’s Gabriella Gilbert showed her passing skills getting the ball to Templeton who took a shot with a difficult angle, putting the ball far to the outside of the right post.

Fox stopped the corner kick by Templeton, but Jordan followed up with is second and third goals of the game within a minute of each other.

Striking hard and striking fast, Jordan accomplished a hat trick in the first nine minutes of the game.

Team Wash Family Construction would not let the 3-0 deficit stop it. Fox stopped another potential Jordan goal.

Relieving Samblis in the Slim’s Place’s goal, Asa Brisson took over as the team’s goalkeeper. From the sideline, Coach Brisson taught his son the keys to the keeper position as the communicator and defensive director of the team.

Taking the ball from Wash Family, Gilbert took the ball to midfield. With nice moves, Bert Vortuba took over on offense as Brenna Heckler and Kendall Rice protected their end of the field on defense.

Picking up the pace of their game, Jax Kagin stayed tight on Jordan, cutting him off on another offensive run.

Banks Beukema supported his teammate attacking the ball while Kagin remained hot on the heels of Jordan.

Addison Hey, for Wash Family Construction, added her support on the field. Hey and Layla Yavalar, daughter of Coach Yavalar, combined their efforts on the field for their team making a difference, preventing scoring for more than five minutes by Team Slim’s Place.

Samblis showed his pace and ability with his first goal of the game. Jordan followed with his fifth and final goal of the game.

In the inaugural game of the season, the referee allowed the learning of skills and rules with throw in do overs.

As the season progresses, rules are enforced more strictly and play becomes more refined.

Hey continued to put the pressure on the Slim’s Place’s offense, preventing another score before the close of the half.

To start the second half of play, Templeton immediately took the ball to the goal in the first minute of play, advancing the score to 7-0.

Not to be rattled, Fox saved the next shot on goal.

Hoover dribbled the ball only to have it stolen by Killian Garrard. Once again showing her ability, Gilbert placed a strong throw in right to teammate Templeton, who struck hard to the goal. Fox grabbed the ball with confidence making another save.

BRADENTON – Members and guests of the Rotary Club of Anna Maria Island took to the links last week during the service organization’s third annual Charity Golf Classic.

The team from LaPensee Plumbing, Pools and Air consisting of Greg LaPensee, Logan Shields, Bryan Meador, and Jason Ghromley won the tournament, shooting a 68 in the best-ball team format that kicked off with a shotgun start.

The Rotary team of Carter Montross, Barb Montross, Susie Cimicata, and Dick Correnti won the mixed team title with a score of 75.

The Charity Golf Classic took place Wednesday, April 5, and was again played at the IMG Academy Golf Club in Bradenton.

The golfers battled windy conditions as they made their way around the course.

After teeing off on the ninth hole, Mike Stringer said, “This wind is brutal.”

Stringer’s group included David Zaccagnino, John Coleman and Nate Talucci.

“AMI Rotary and IMG did another outstanding job putting on a fun tournament with lots of incredible giveaways for a good cause,” Zaccagnino, a Rotarian, said afterwards.

the Literacy Program. The clubs are now working together on their largest local project yet: partnering with Manatee County on the Rotary Suncoast Playground Project that will lead to the construction of three all-accessible playgrounds.

The theme was The Royals. Costumes and decorations reflected the royal touch. Mirroring the Ryder Cup, twosomes competed for three holes of best ball, three holes of best shot and three holes of alternate shots.

Longboat Key goes darker for turtles

LONGBOAT KEY – Turtles will not see as much light on Longboat Key when the town begins enforcing its new turtle lighting ordinance beginning May 1.

Like the three Anna Maria Island cities that have turtle lighting ordinances, Longboat Key’s code enforcement officer is checking the beaches at night prior to the start of the six-month season. The town is working with people to retrofit their outdoor lighting to turtle-friendly fixtures.

When artificial lights are brighter than the Gulf of Mexico, nesting and hatching turtles can become confused, abandoning nests and crawling into streets and storm drains instead of the Gulf of Mexico, said biologist Rick Herren, of The Sea Turtle Conservancy, which co-sponsored a lighting workshop April 5 with the town of Longboat Key. Federal, state and local laws protect sea turtles, Herren said; loggerheads, a state threatened species, are the most common visitors to local beaches.

Low, long and shielded

The aim of the ordinance is to make sure beachfront lighting is low to the ground – two to three feet high – or aimed downward if on a second floor or above. It should have long wavelengths, such as amber or red (not including painted compact fluorescent bug lights) because short wavelengths like blues and greens attract turtles.

Lights also should be shielded so they do not shine towards the beach.

Turtle-friendly lighting actually allows people to see better at night because it is not bright enough to cause blind spots, he added.

The cost of retrofitted lights and labor is often free to property owners with grants from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill restoration fund, he said.

Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring got one of the first turtle lighting grants after the oil spill and helped retrofit 11 properties, director Suzi Fox said.

“Their electric costs went down, and their neighbors went into the program because the lights looked so good,” she said.

During sea turtle season, May 1 – Oct. 31, please follow these tips: • Turn off lights visible from the beach and close blinds from sundown to sunrise; lights confuse nesting sea turtles and may cause them to go back to sea and drop their eggs in the water, where they won’t hatch. Light can also attract hatchlings away from the water.

• Don’t use flashlights, lanterns or camera flashes on the beach at night.

• Remove all objects from the sand from sundown to sunrise; they can deter sea turtles from nesting and disorient hatchlings.

• Fill in the holes you dig in the sand before leaving the beach; they can trap nesting and hatching sea turtles, which cannot live long out of the water.

• Don’t use sky lanterns or fireworks; they litter the beach and Gulf.

• Do not trim trees and plants that shield the beach from lights.

• Never touch a sea turtle; it’s the law. If you see people disturbing turtles, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Wildlife Alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

During bird nesting season, March through August, please follow these tips: • Never touch a shorebird chick, even if it’s wandering outside a staked nesting area.

• Teach kids not to chase birds – bird parents may abandon nests if they’re disturbed.

• Don’t feed birds – it encourages them to fly at people aggressively and is not good for their health.

• If birds are screeching and flying at you, you’re too close.

• Avoid posted bird nesting areas and use designated walkways to the beach.

• Keep pets away from bird nesting areas.

• Keep the beach clean; food scraps attract predators such as raccoons and crows to the beach, and litter can entangle birds and other wildlife.

• If you see people disturbing nesting birds, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Wildlife Alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

The female loggerhead sea turtle clumsily lumbered across the sand into the shallows of Tampa Bay, hit deeper water, then soared off toward Fort Desoto as about 50 visitors, residents and Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring staff and volunteers cheered. Mote Marine’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital staff treated her for probable red tide-induced lethargy after she was rescued off Longboat Key in January. Not a stranger to being handled by humans, Mike had a passive integrated transponder tag, similar to microchips for pets, which the University of Central Florida staff implanted in 2011 when Mike nested in Brevard County.

Quilting class in Cortez Betty Ford-Smith will teach pine cone quilting starting on Tuesday, April 18 at The Folk School at Florida Maritime Museum at 4415 119th St. W., Cortez, on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on April 18, April 25 and May 2.

The pine cone quilt, also called a pine burr quilt was a traditional Southern African American quilt pattern that became popular in the 20th century.

The pine cone patchwork derives its name from the overlapping design seen from the bottom of a long leaf pinecone. The pattern consists of a circular pattern of triangular fabric pointed towards the center. The finished quilts are very heavy and have very colorful designs.

In this three-part class, students will learn basic elements of design and color, practice hand sewing and develop a deeper appreciation for hand sewn full size quilts. The goal is to complete a 24x24 inch square using the folding fabric method making little triangles which will form a Pine Cone quilt sampler, seat covering, pillow top, or wall hanging.

The fee for each class is $35 and includes thread, base fabric and needles.

Students are asked to bring scissors and 3 yards of assorted fabric. Participation in all classes is required. A total of $105 is due at the time of registration.

The Bradenton Beach City Commission intends to extend for three more months the voter-initiated building moratorium that took effect in November and is set to expire in early May. During the Thursday, April 6, meeting, the commission directed City Attorney Ricinda Perry to prepare a moratorium extension ordinance that will be subject to public hearings on Thursday, April 20, and Thursday, May 4. The extension is desired because the commission has not yet adopted new vacation rental regulations

or discussed the land development code amendments recommended by the Planning and Zoning Board. The moratorium prohibits city staff from accepting and reviewing building permit applications for structures in the R-1 and R-2 residential zones that call for the construction of more than four bedrooms or rooms that could conceivably be used for sleeping.

Assignment of benefits

W

hen is a benefit not a benefit?

When it’s actually a benefit to a third party and not to the intended benefit recipient. If this sounds like double talk that’s because it kind of is, especially if you aren’t careful about signing away control of your benefit.

Assignment of benefits commonly known as AOB, is a legal tool that allows a third party to be paid for services performed for an insured homeowner who would normally be reimbursed by the insurance company directly after making a claim. Most assignment of benefits agreements presented to the homeowner allow the contractor to stand in the shoes of the homeowner for insurance collection purposes.

This is a long-established procedure intended to allow vendors to receive prompt payment from insurers after doing emergency repair work, particularly when it involves water damage and appliance repair. Now, however, a law intended to help homeowners expedite repairs is being turned into a fraud to gain money for

Here’s how it works: You have an emergency situation in your home, a flood from broken pipes or fire or something else that makes your home either not habitable or very inconvenient.

Your contractor asks you to sign an assignment of benefits waiver telling you that he will take care of getting the insurance company to pay him directly. Then when inflated claims are presented to the insurance company and disputed or denied, the contractor gets his attorney partner to bring a lawsuit against the insurance company.

Per Florida law, the insurance company is responsible for paying both the attorney fees and making good on the inflated esti-

mate from the contractor.

Predictably, because of these lawsuits insurance costs are soaring with Citizens Property Insurance seeing litigated claims jumping to 45 percent in 2016 from 12 percent in 2011. Citizens, which is currently running a surplus because of our very lucky hurricane seasons and beneficial reforms, has succeeded in getting private insurance companies back in the Florida market. But these private insurers are being forced to raise premiums to cover the cost of litigation with the danger of eventually forcing homeowners back into Citizens if their rates get too high or they leave the state.

Already one private insurer stopped writing insurance in southeast Florida where this fraud has really taken off. Citizens is restricted to a 10 percent a year increase and if it starts taking on more policies in addition to facing litigation because of fraudulent claims, it will very quickly be back in the red.

Unfortunately, the Florida legislature is not helping to shut down this fraud.

A South Florida legislature at the end of March blocked an effort to stop the scheme by not allowing a bill to remedy this situation procedure through the legislature. The bill would have ended the attorney fee pay back law deflating the attorney’s incentive to peruse inflated contractor claims.

So there we are, we finally get Citizens out of the red, private insurers are looking favorably on doing business in Florida and it could all be for nothing. And don’t think that just because most of these issues are happening in the Miami Dade area that it doesn’t affect us. Losses incurred by Citizens Insurance are spread around to all tax payers in the state.

Homeowners may think assignment of benefits absolves them of their responsibility, and that may be true in the short term but in the long run you may be contributing to a growing fraud that in the end will cost the state of Florida, and ultimately all taxpayers, money. Call your insurance company first, and don’t sign anything you’re not sure about.

Whitmore said she will oppose the 65-foot option.

“It doesn’t make sense because of the right of way,” she said.

Whitmore believes impeding on the existing right of way to accommodate the approach lanes needed for the largest of the proposed bridge designs would significantly impact the village of Cortez and the residences and businesses located along that stretch of Cortez Road.

There are also questions about the right of way impact that would be felt on the other end of the bridge in Bradenton Beach.

“I don’t know how they’re going to do it, but we’ll see,” Bradenton Beach Mayor Bill Shearon said.

“Without seeing any data, that seems like it would literally kill Cortez. They’d be under the bridge and people would have to go out of their way to get there,” he said of the 65-foot option.

Shearon said a bridge update of some sort was expected at Monday’s Island Transportation Planning Organization meeting in Anna Maria.

the street in front of the Sandcastle Resort. The meter produced a reading of 81-86 decibels.

A second reading taken at the Freckled Fin’s property line produced a reading of 93-98 db. Masi then contacted a supervisor who advised him to make an arrest.

The city’s noise ordinance allows a maximum of 75 db. between 7 and 10 p.m. in the commercial district. If a complaint is received, the reading is taken at the point of the complaint. If no complaint is received, the reading is taken at the establishment’s property line.

Owner response

Lubore acknowledged the violation, but questioned the arrest.

“In the history of Bradenton Beach, when has any manager or owner been arrested at 8:45 for a noise violation?” he said.

“I’ve had five citations in two years; that’s over 700 days of live music. I think it’s insanity. This is a resort town.

Basically, you’re shutting down live music,” he said.

“Don’t buy a house near the airport if you don’t want to hear planes,” he said of previous complaints voiced by

residents.

To avoid future violations, Lubore will use more acts that don’t feature bass players or drummers, and he is considering having outdoor entertainment from 3-7 p.m. and indoor entertainment from 7-11. He also thinks the city commission needs to reexamine the noise ordinance.

After affects

Friday night, at Island Time Bar and Grill, manager Eric Fleischman used a sound meter on his cell phone to ensure the band stayed below 75 db.

He said he was nervous about being arrested even though Island Time has never received a noise citation.

During the band’s break, a patron seated at the bar measured the combination of customers talking and house music at 83 db.

Island Time owner Bill Herlihy discussed this on Saturday.

“How can that be right or fair that we don’t even get a warning? What happens if the manager goes upstairs and the band turns up? Why wouldn’t it be the band and the manager that get arrested?” he said.

“The ambient noise of our customers is 83 db. What are we supposed to do?

75 decibels measured at the property line is obviously way too low. If that’s the limit, we’re not going to have bands because we’ll be over every time. It’s apparent the business owners need to come together and address this with the commission,” he added.

Police response

Det. Sgt. Lenard Diaz said the department’s new policy applies equally to repeat offenders and first-time offenders.

“Right now, there’s a zero-tolerance policy on Bridge Street. If the decibel meter reads above what the noise should be, the manager will go to jail.

There’s no more warnings like we’ve done in the past,” Diaz said.

Police Chief Sam Speciale agreed.

“The police department has been very lenient. We’ve put it in the press, and we’ve talked to the owners who are now well-aware of the consequences.

What we do for one, we have to do for everyone,” Speciale said.

A noise citation results in a $75 fine, but an arrest involves a trip to jail, posting bond and a court appearance before a judge who can levy a fine of up to $500 plus court costs for a misdemeanor offense.

“I’ve made a lot of friends, especially from England, over the years, and I like to keep in touch with them,” she said. “This business is so generational. Two people get married, and then their kids come here to get married and sometimes the original couple renews their vows.”

She said she’s seen a lot of unusual things happen over the years.

“It’s a real adrenaline rush for the bride and anything can happen,” she said. “I’ve seen a groomsman run down the beach naked, mothers of the bride and groom almost get into a fight and one bride’s mother had to climb out of the

bathroom window because she got stuck in there.

“We had a couple from Sweden get married with their family,” she added. “The bride and groom spoke English, but not the rest of the family. All they knew was ‘wedding’ and ‘Budweiser.’”

She shared a secret.

“I don’t know how many couples told me they already got married, but they decided to have a wedding for their families,” she said. “They asked me to keep it a secret.”

Chiles credits McKee for their success as a wedding destination.

“The top wedding publication in the country called the Knot has recognized Patti's talent by repeat-

edly awarding the Sandbar the top beach wedding destination on the west coast of Florida,” he said.

“Words cannot express how much she has done for our company and for all the couples, families and organizations in our community that she has served when they have held banquets and celebrations on the water’s edge In a position that sees around 200 weddings and other beach events a year, McKee is thankful for the support of her fellow staff members.

Murphys celebrate 50th anniversary Mayor Dan Murphy and his wife, Barbara, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, April 8, with their children and grandchildren. The Murphys, who grew up in St. Petersburg, were married on April 8, 1967, in St. Jude’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

DNA on cigarette butt leads to charges

HOLMES BEACH – Evidence from a cigarette butt helped Holmes Beach Police identify an Anna Maria man as a suspect in a burglary to a van on Aug. 30, 2015, according to a police department news release issued last week.

The incident occurred at the 34th Street beach access where the victims parked their 2002 Chevrolet van to go to the beach around 3 p.m. When they returned, they found a purse, a black bag containing personal papers and credit cards were missing. The van had a defective rear door lock, and it didn’t always lock. Police found a cigarette butt inside, which they suspected belonged to the perpetrator since the victims were non-smokers. They said their van smelled like somebody had been smoking in it.

The victim called the credit card company and found out his card has been used at the Wal Mart and AutoZone stores in Bradenton. The video of the transaction at Wal Mart was recovered, and the card was used to purchase parts for 2002 BMW Ci convertible. The employees at AutoZone provided a suspect’s name since they were familiar with his vehicle.

On Dec. 10, 2015, police identified Matthew Johnson, , 41, of Anna Maria, as a suspect from the Wal Mart video. Police issued a search warrant for Johnson’s DNA, which they say matched the DNA from the cigarette butt. An arrest warrant was issued and Johnson was arrested on March 24 of this year.

He was released from jail on $5,000 bond on May 27.

He tried to get away from the officer by jumping off the bridge, but the officer and a backup officer prevented that. He was taken into custody.

He finally got her to regain consciousness and got permission to search a bag she had and found evidence of heroin. She told him she wanted to die, and he took her into custody for treatment.

3/30, breach of peace, disorderly intoxication, fighting, 200 Church St. The officer responded to a complaint about people making noise and found two intoxicated men fighting. One man threatened the other and had to be pepper strayed.

There also was an intoxicated woman who had pulled down her pants and would not pull them back up. The officer

The officer found she had a slight pulse and called for an ambulance. The woman’s pulse weakened, and a woman pediatrician used chest compression to keep her alive before EMTs arrived. The officer found evidence of heroin.

4/2, battery, 11900 Cortez Road W. A man said he got into an argument with a woman and tried to get her to leave, but she struck him in the face. She was arrested.

4/1, information, 12202 Cortez Road W. The victim said as she was parking her car at a store, a youngster on a bike ran into her fender. Before she could get out of her car, he rode away. She said her son, who was in her car, thought he recognized the kid and gave an address where he thought the kid lived. When a deputy questioned a resident of the house, he said there were no children living there.

Donald B. Sundnik, of Holmes Beach, born Nov. 25, 1926, died Feb. 28, 2017.

He was married to Marilyn Demgen Sudnik, deceased in 1996, and is

survived by children, Steven, John and Lisa Sudnik Marklow; grandchildren, Joseph, Sarah Marklow Moore and Mary Marklow Clinton; and two great grandchildren, Miles Moore and Easton Clinton. He was predeceased by son Christopher and grandson Shaun.

Don was well known in the advertising business as an award winning photographer specializing in car photography throughout the automotive industry.

He was a partner in a photo studio known as Sudnik & Overhardt. In his early days, Don served in the Army Air Force as a photographer mapping the Philippine Islands in 1944 just before the bombing in Japan. Don also worked at the Detroit News as a sports photographer, capturing the fall of the Flying Wallendas at the fairgrounds in 1962.

An avid hockey fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Don also enjoyed fishing, listening to jazz and mingling with the musicians at local clubs. For those who knew and loved Don, he was always positive and upbeat. When asked how he was, the answer was always, "Sensational."

The officer saw injuries to her head and a broken lamp and the boyfriend was taken to jail. On April 1, the victim told police she heard rumors of retaliation against her from the boyfriend’s friends and employer. Police increased patrols at her address.

3/30, 3/30, theft from a construction site, 5300 Marina Drive, Main Stay. A contractor said some of his tools were missing, and he thought a temporary employee had stolen them. The officer questioned the employee, and he denied taking the tools. The contractor asked the officer to issue the employee a trespass warning.

3/30, aggravated assault, 4000 Gulf Drive, Manatee Public Beach. The victim said he got into an argument about placing his bike on the front of a bus when the suspect pulled up his shirt and brandished a hand gun. Police recovered a Daisy air BB pistol, and arrested the suspect.

3/31, assist anther agency in a dog bite case, 4900 block of Gulf Drive. The victim came to police saying, she had been bitten by a dog while walking to the library. An officer visited the house and found nobody was home, but there was evidence of a pet dog there and a long leash tethered to s tree. The victim provided police with the dog owner’s name and phone number, and the owner said her dog had gotten its necessary shots. The officer called Island Animal Clinic and got evidence that the dog has received its shots. He forwarded the information to Manatee County Animal Services.

3/31, noise code violation, 200 block of 71st Street. At 10:10 p.m., the police received a phone call about a loud party at a

neighboring house. The officer visited the address and found the noise was excessive. He contacted the renter who said she would turn down the music and noise, and there were no more complaints. The officer gave the incident information to code enforcement.

3/31, noise violation, 3500 block of Fourth Avenue. An officer was dispatched around 11 p.m. to the house where he found a loud party. He issued a citation to the renter and there were no more complaints.

4/1, larceny/theft, AMI Beach Café, 4000 gulf Drive. The general manager gave the officer alleged evidence of a manager zeroing out tabs so he could keep the money, and the officer took the information to the detective. The next day, he told the officer he went ahead and terminated the manager to avoid losing more money.

The officer contacted the terminated employee who denied all accusations. The officer sent the information to the state attorney’s office and the police detective to see if they had a case.

The officer was dispatched to the address on a noise complaint and found excessive noise. He contacted the renter who said she would stop the noise, and he issued her a citation.
