A cold front brought “chilled to the bone” weather for the Anna Maria Island Privateers’ Christmas Parade Saturday. Their parade ship Skullywag led the way, while Santa’s sleigh and Anthony’s float carried celebrants who were undaunted by the cold wind.

ing down his tenure as the building official for the town of Longboat Key, a position he’s held since June.

Murphy presented the proposed hiring to city Greembaum commissioners during an emergency commission meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 6. The commission unanimously authorized the hiring.

Cole appointed to commission seat

BRADENTON BEACH – Ralph Cole is back on the City Commission.

Cole, who lost his Ward 3 reelection bid to Randy White in November, was appointed to the commission by a 3-1 vote during a special commission meeting Wednesday night.

Cole will serve the remaining 11 months of the commissioner’s term vacated by John Chappie, who was recently elected mayor.

Commissioner Marilyn Maro nominated Cole. Chappie and Commissioner Jake Spooner supported her nomination. Participating in his first commission meeting, White nominated Planning and Zoning Board member James Lynch and voted for him.

Cole and Lynch were the only applicants considered. Bill Vincent recently rescinded his application, and no lastminute candidates expressed interest Wednesday night.

Cole was sworn in Thursday (Dec. 7) and participated in the commission’s regular meeting.

Appointed City Commissioner Ralph Cole was sworn back into office by City Clerk Terri Sanclemente before Thursday evening’s commission meeting.

White questioned whether the appointment could be made that night because the voter-approved charter amendment that eliminated the city commission wards has not yet been finalized by ordinance.

The elimination of the wards made Cole eligible to apply for appointment.

Had the wards not been eliminated, the appointee would have had to have

come from the city’s southernmost commission ward where Lynch and Vincent live.

Chappie and City Attorney Ricinda Perry told White the appointment could take place that night. Perry referenced the commission’s previous approval of a resolution presented in September by the lawyer for the Concerned Neighbors of Bradenton Beach. Perry said

the 20-page resolution that contained the charter amendment ballot language also stated the approved amendments must be enacted as soon as the elections results were certified.

During public comment, Jim Hassett referenced the elections and said, “The public just got done telling us we want change. I would like to ask to you continue thinking about change and elect Mr. Lynch.”

Former planning board member John Metz praised Lynch and suggested Cole should not be appointed because 55 percent of city voters voted against him in his race with White.

Tonya Cole, no relation, expressed support for Cole. She cited his emphasis on family and his willingness to assist constituents.

When addressing the commission, Cole stated his desire to continue the work he’s been part of for the past two years. This includes his duties as chair of the Community Redevelopment Agency. The agency has approximately $1.3 million at its disposal for the continued improvement and redevelopment of the city’s waterfront CRA district. see cole, page 4

The Manatee County Coroner ’s Office has identified a body found near Egmont Key last weekend, and it is not that of Fraser Horne, a Canadian who winters in Cortez.

The body was identified as William Robeysek, 61, of Bradenton who apparently jumped off the Skyway Bridge. Deputies were searching for him after finding his car on top of the bridge Nov. 24.

Horne disappeared Nov. 17 when he didn’t return from fishing. His 30-foot boat was discovered in the Gulf with the ignition on and his wallet and keys were found in the boat.

His dog, which accompanied him, was found on dry land.

LDC change moves to second reading Holmes Beach Building Official Jim McGuinness will soon have expanded administrative approval powers if a minor change to the city’s land development code is approved on second reading. The change allows the building official to approve minor architectural changes to buildings without a full site plan review. To qualify, the changes must be strictly aesthetic and not add usable space or impact the site. The measure was deemed consistent with the comprehensive plan by planning commissioners. It goes before city commissioners Dec. 12 for a final vote.

Center matching challenge continues Donors have until Dec. 31 to participate in the Center of Anna Maria Island’s matching challenge. An anonymous donor has pledged $30,000 to match donations through the end of the year. Center Executive Director Kristen Lessig said the challenge has raised about $10,000 as of Dec. 8. Center adult flag football begins Adult flag football returns to The Center of Anna Maria Island for the winter season.

Adults of all ages are invited to participate.

Games are played each Thursday night beginning at 6 p.m. Evaluations are at 7 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 21 with a draft to follow. The season begins Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018.

Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy pulled a fast one on the crowd at City Pier Park Friday before the Anna Maria Holiday of Treasures.

He had been saying Santa would ride his sleigh over the city pier and land. He used an old-time looking radio and a recording to pull it of.

Shortly after 4 p.m., the mayor announced he was going to get in contact with Santa’s sleigh with the radio, so he spoke into the microphone and the voice on the radio said they were getting close to the pier. Murphy peered out at that direction and told everyone they would be seeing the sleigh soon, but there was no sleigh. Suddenly, the voice on the radio announced they had landed short on the beach near the pier and would walk to the park. Kids peered in that direction and finally somebody spotted Santa walking with Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Steve Stewart.

Santa didn’t use his sleigh because it was being serviced so it would be in prime working condition for Christmas.

Nice try, mayor.

Lynch cited his experience as a military attorney, law instructor, ombudsman for the elderly and planning board member. He said these qualities could help the city find win-win solutions.

When nominating Cole, Maro cited his experience, his emphasis on families, and she said he was the only city official to check on her after Hurricane Irma.

Commissioner Jake Spooner countered Metz’s argument by noting that 169 city voters voted for Cole to represent them.

Chappie mentioned Cole’s experience and his penchant for research. When expressing his respect for Lynch, Chappie stressed the need for Lynch’s experience and continued service on the six-member planning board that has four new members.

When it became apparent that Cole was going to be appointed, audience member Patty Shay got up and walked out of the meeting, followed

by Metz and several others.

City Clerk Terri Sanclemente swore Cole in late Thursday afternoon and he participated in the commission’s regular meeting that evening.

Metz issued stop work order A neighboring property owner notified the city of the permitting violation.

BRADENTON BEACH – Former Planning and Zoning Board member John Metz was issued a stop work order last week.

The city-issued stop work order brought to a temporary halt the installation of a new wooden deck being installed behind Metz’s dual-purpose residence and vacation rental home at 306 Gulf Dr. S. The stop work order cites working without required permits for decking.

On Friday, Metz turned in the necessary permit application, but the stop work order could not be lifted until Building Official Steve Gilbert and/or City Planner Alan Garrett review the application and inspect the worksite.

The lawsuit is part of Metz’s ongoing efforts to have the Kokolis property at

308 Gulf Dr. S. declared abandoned in terms of its continued use as a vacation rental. Metz is basing this claim on his interpretation of city code as it pertains to structures being unoccupied for more than 18 months.

Earlier this year, the city’s special master ruled in support of the city and the renovation-related building permit he issued the Kokolis’ in 2015.

EDITORIAL A wonderful life

L

ike all end of year holiday seasons, we rejoice in the same Christmas carols we hear on the radio every year at this time. There are the same movies, young and old and the same old cartoons. With the advent of Hallmark Channel’s new Christmas movies, we have new actors and actresses and new stories on the television. They all depict idyllic situations: snow, family, love celebration, with a dash of conflict thrown in that always seems to get resolved.

Why do we love these movies, shows and music? Because it is familiar. It’s everyone’s idea of Christmas.

Anna Maria Island has that same situation. Each city’s businesses open their doors to say hi and to sell merchandise and the people come out.

There’s nothing to fear about being out after dark out here, walking from store to store. It’s usually that way all year long.

W

hat we have is our own form of paradise. And yes, it is changing.

We try and guide that change to be the most beneficial - or least damaging we can make it.

One constant, however, would seem to be the affection most retain for the Island’s holiday traditions - whether it’s sharing Thanksgiving dinner with your neighbors in Roser Community Church or walking from house to house to re-create the night Jesus was born or singing Christmas carols on Bridge Street.

And while our Island is transforming from a retirement haven and a great place to raise kids into a destination where tourists spend their vacations in rented houses, the residents and visitors still appreciate the fact that a bit of old fashioned fellowship remains, along with the opportunity to share it with neighbors and their families.

We can dream of a white Christmas and still enjoy the tropical one just outside our window. It's not a bad situation at all. In fact, you might liken it to Bedford Falls in the Frank Capra classic.

As George Bailey would say, “It’s a wonderful life.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Answers needed on pier In a city commission meeting on Nov. 9, 2017, commissioner (Dale) Woodland provided to the commissioners and the mayor the results of his findings from discussions with the potential contractors and Bradenton Beach officials. This information was useful and concerned the rebuild of the city pier.

He was chastised by the mayor for providing that information and he was told to keep his notes because it would be discussed at a meeting in December when Ayers Engineering was present, so the information was only heard one time.

Well, a special meeting was held on Dec. 6, 2017. What a waste of time that was.

Ayers provided absolutely nothing. Only commissioners were allowed to ask questions and those questions were not answered. The public could only comment. If the public had questions, they could submit them and city officials would respond sometime in the future. Information exchange did not take place and will not take place in the forum of a city com-

mission meeting. Something needs to change. There appears to be no sense of urgency to get anything done.

I believe Ayers is in over their head and does not have any idea how to proceed. By now they should have at least preliminary design drawing of the options, as well as costs and schedule information. Permit applications should already be submitted.

None of this has been done. This is not a difficult design.

What is wrong with the idea of holding round table discussions with all concerned parties involved? What are we afraid of?

Are we afraid that the right decision will be made or is it that the decision that might be made is in conflict with the desired modern pier design?

We do not need a world-class pier with solar panels on the roof and accommodations for a water taxi that has not been approved by our commissioners. We already have a world class pier that is enjoyed by thousands of people from all over the world.

Parks and Beautification Committee sets priorities The city’s Parks and Beautification Committee has its list of priorities ready to enter the planning stage in the New Year with the hopes of implementing at least some of those plans before breaking for the summer.

HOLMES BEACH – Members of the city’s Parks and Beautification Committee will have their hands full of new projects when the group meets again in January.

The subject of their December meeting was to establish a list of priority projects, beginning with the revamping of the Holmes Beach Dog Park.

Several community members attended the meeting to give their opinions on what improvements are needed at the dog park. Flotilla Drive resident Sheryl Smargisso also wanted to make sure committee members heard the concerns of nearby residents before any changes to the park are made.

Also planned for discussion in January is the placement of pet waste receptacles in various locations along Marina Drive.

Another project for the committee is the revitalization of Spring Lake Park on Holmes Boulevard. Committee member Dennis Groh said the city had unexpectedly received a gift of four gumbo limbo trees in need of immediate

replanting which would be placed at the park. While public works employees continue the task of clearing out dead and high maintenance plants, Groh said he’s working on a draft replanting plan for the park.

Resident Renae Ferguson asked committee members to consider the removal of dead palm trees along Marina Drive and add crushed shell to the existing storm water swales. Mayor Bob Johnson agreed to head up the effort to provide maintenance along the stretch of road with the help of public works employees.

Island Fitness begins a new chapter The evolution of the relationship between Island Fitness owner Brenda Canning and leadership at The Center of Anna Maria Island has resulted in a partnership that’s proving beneficial for both parties.

ANNA MARIA – A new partnership is turning into a beautiful thing for both Island Fitness and The Center of Anna Maria Island.

Brenda Canning moved her business into the fitness center at The Center in November and, a month later, she says she couldn’t be more pleased with the results.

“The transition’s been great,” she said. “Everyone’s been so welcoming.”

When her lease was up at the Waterline Shops in Holmes Beach, Canning needed to find a new home for her business. In a fortuitous turn of events, it turns out that Center leadership was searching for a community organization to partner with.

After being brought together by a third party, Center Executive Director Kristen Lessig and Canning came to an agreement that benefits both organizations.

Members of Island Fitness were given the month of November to get acquainted with the facilities at the Center before they had to sign an agreement. Canning said she’s retained her membership at the new location and has seen a growth

The way the agreement between the Center and Island Fitness works is that the fitness organization receives a percentage of membership dollars and occupies the majority of the second floor of the facility. Canning oversees all fitness programming and operations at the Center.

She also owns and maintains all

of the fitness equipment. The only segment of the Center’s fitness programming she doesn’t oversee is the CrossFit program, run by Shay Coleman, who also works as a trainer at the nonprofit.

In the New Year, Canning said she hopes to add additional fitness classes, a youth gymnastics program, at least two more pieces of equipment and 24-hour access to the fitness facilities. She said the

response to the change from members of both Island Fitness and The Center has been very positive.

“I think it (the partnership) fits the direction of where I’ve always wanted the Center to go regarding community collaborations and partnerships,” Lessig said, adding she hopes the Center can expand its partnerships in the future.

FDOT begins island traffic study information sessions Many ideas are being considered by FDOT as the Barrier Island Traffic Study continues, though some of those are more feasible than others.

LONGBOAT KEY – The first of what Florida Department of Transportation staffers say will be many public meetings concerning the ongoing Barrier Island Traffic Study left attendees with mixed feelings.

FDOT staff and contractors met with more than 100 members of the public at the Longboat Island Chapel to discuss the progress contractors, led by lead contractor Stantec, have made through the data collection progress and what some of the initial suggestions are to help improve traffic along the barrier islands, both in and out of season.

Attendees said the presentation left them feeling more informed about what’s going on, but concerned

about the feasibility of some of the solutions offered.

Some of those solutions for Zone 1, Anna Maria and Holmes Beach, include changing the left-turn signal phasing at 75th Street and Manatee Avenue in Bradenton to reduce delays, adding roundabouts throughout the city, creating a park and ride service with centralized parking areas and charging a fee for beach parking at Manatee County beaches. Other options include the addition of a water shuttle service from Bradenton Beach to Holmes Beach and Anna Maria, and the creation of a transit-only lane across the Anna Maria Island Bridge, once the bridge is rebuilt.

In Zone 2, Bradenton Beach and Coquina Beach, ideas to improve traffic include adding a roundabout on Longboat Key at Broadway Street and Gulf of Mexico Drive, and the installation of east and west-bound right turn lanes at Cortez Road and 75th Street.

Island churches when not otherwise in use was also discussed. The issue with that, said Jim Corbett with Walker Consultants, is that the Island churches aren’t interested in leasing their spaces.

Corbett, serving as a parking expert on the study, said some incentive would need to be given in order for people to take advantage of a park and ride option. He suggested creating “enhanced shoulders” on the new Anna Maria Island Bridge to allow for transit bypass of traffic on an as-needed basis. The challenge, he said, with developing a solution to the parking issues would be in finding funds for the project and creating public interest in using monetized parking initiatives.

Holmes Beach Commissioner Jim Kihm said he left the presentation with questions he hopes FDOT employees can answer, primarily what people the department is seeking to target with the suggested mass transit and paid parking alternatives.

“I’m glad we’re talking about it,” he said of the study.

Avenue for the safety of the crowd. It was a good old-fashioned celebration that George Bailey, from the 1946 Frank Capra movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” would have loved.

AMICCO plays holiday favorites The Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra (AMICCO) filled CrossPointe Fellowship with The Many Moods of Christmas Sunday.

The music came in four suites, and there were the popular carols along with some that are not played much, and the orchestra and chorus complemented each other under the direction of Maestro Alfred Gershfeld.

During intermission, violinist Sherry Lowe and AMICCO Board President Jim Stolte gave a bouquet of flowers after Stolte announced AMICCO Board Executive Director Jeanie Pickwick was retiring at the end of the season. This is AMICCO’s 25th season.

Winterfest gets taste of winter wind Cold windy weather put a damper on Winterfest at Holmes Beach City Hall field Saturday.

There were only a few vendors who put up their tents and the ones who did kept a nervous watch on them. Most food vendors stayed open, but there were few people buying. Koko Ray and Karma huddled under a tent making music.

Pier replacement debate continues No final decisions have been made regarding the construction materials to be used when building a new pier.

ANNA MARIA – Last week, city officials and citizens had another opportunity to discuss the replacement of the Anna Maria City Pier that remains closed due to hurricane damage.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, Ayres Associates Vice President Jay Saxena made his second appearance before the Anna Maria Mayor and City Commission. During his previous visit in October, Saxena and his design, engineering and permitting team suggested the city construct a pier made of concrete pilings and composite decking. He said this would offer an estimated 75 to 100-year service life. Commissioner Dale Woodland and some community members continue to push for a

No final decisions on the pier materials have been made, and no timetable has been given as to when City Commissioners will make those decisions.

Saxena said permitting with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has begun and the next critical step is to

acquire the geotechnical data upon which the pier design will be based.

Commissioner Dale Woodland said he doesn’t understand why the permitting is taking so long when the new pier is to be built in the same footprint as the existing pier. Saxena did not share Woodland’s opinion that permitting has been delayed or impacted the design process.

“Was the damage assessment based upon engineering judgement or on physical evidence?” she asked.

“Was a cost benefit analysis completed to determine the most cost-effective plan – i.e. wood vs. concrete?” she asked.

“Locals and visitors come to the pier because it represents a bygone era where times were calmer and safer, people were friendlier and memories were made. We want to sustain and preserve that structure as it was. We want our pier back,” Deal said.

Anna Maria resident Sissy Quinn serves as the president

of the Anna Maria Island Preservation Trust, and she recently started a Go Fund Me page to help fund the pier project. Her historical perspective differed from Deal’s.

“The most important thing people need to know is there isn’t a toothpick left of that original pier,” Quinn said. “It got historical designation because of its footprint and its value to the city and the Island of Anna Maria.

“The importance of that is the footprint,” she added. “Nothing else matters. They’re not going to come around and take our historical marker from the state. That’s sacrosanct as long as its built in its own footprint from 1911. Let the city go ahead and do what’s best for the city and the Island as

far as codes and everything else when rebuilding the pier.”

In reference to the nearby Rod & Reel Pier, Anna Maria resident Dennis Ellsworth said, “I think you need to just ride down the road from the City Pier. We have another pier down there. It’s been there 70 years, made out of wood, and that’s individually maintained; it’s not by the city.

The reason our pier’s in such poor shape is because we haven’t maintained it.”

Rod & Reel Pier owner Mario Schoenfelder has leased the Anna Maria City Pier from the city since the early 2000s. His lease states it is his responsibility to maintain the pier and that has been a point of contention in commission discussions for years.

Bar talk and warm coats

I

ts quiet out there.

The tourist tide is at its ebb.

But if you lean in and put your ear to the bar, like we did with railroad tracks when we were kids. You can hear it coming.

The roar of the tourist wave. The rumble of the relentless surge of Northern hordes. The clang of grocery carts banging into each other at Publix.

This is the stillness before the storm.

It lends us a sense of common humanity. We share knowing looks at the hardware store like those shared by the Titanic passengers just before they slipped beneath the waves.

In our bars, friendships are rekindled, old feuds are tucked away and the content of the bar talk is not of Disney World or the cost of flights from Chicago but of children and what they are up to now.

It is chilly outside and so locals are

huddling into our bars with their warm coats.

Every local has one.

That warm coat that hangs in the garage or the back of the closet until these coupla weeks in December when the Canadians slip us another one of their Canadian cold fronts.

Nice people Canadians, generally, but we wish they would keep their damn cold fronts and pipelines to themselves.

And now we have to listen to how our president is crazy and their prime minister is smart and handsome and charming and got on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

The Canadian cold front sends the locals searching for their warm coat.

They and their warm coats will march into our bars like critters marching onto the ark – arm, literally in arm – they and their warm coats will settle onto the bar stools two by two.

The bar looks like a motley fashion show.

The old coats are like aging relatives.

Not as groomed or as sharp as they once were but warm and familiar and much loved.

The leathers are chafed and the

fur collars are matted and not all the buttons are the same but they are our warm coat.

Like aging relatives the coats are introduced to the bartender and the other patrons in the bar.

“This is my warm coat. I stole this coat from my sister’s ex-husband. SOB is three years behind in alimony and I’m keeping his damn coat.”

“This my high school football jacket.

Went undefeated in our senior year.”

The not-as-brightly-colored-as-theyonce-were high school football and hockey jackets are punctuated with hooded sweatshirts that say Cape Cod and Boston Red Sox and Go Badgers.

There is always one lady in a great big fur – testimony to acres of forest denuded of small animals.

The lady with the fur loves her coat – as martinis slide down she slides deeper into the fur, and the warm, romantic memories of her lost youth.

“Ralph gave me this coat after he got back from Vegas.”

A guilt coat.

The old coats rekindle old jokes of similar vintage like memories found in the pockets.

And the familiarity of the old coat mixed with a couple of glasses moves the wearer to tell those old jokes with greater enthusiasm.

The second best bar joke of all time resurfaced at the Bistro Bar this week.

A Frenchman walks into a bar with a parrot on his shoulder.

The bartender says, “That’s cool.

Where did you get him?”

The parrot says, “Paris. They got a bunch of ‘em.”

The best bar joke of all time is much better but I can’t tell it here.

Developing a vision for the future A draft of a new vision statement for Holmes Beach should be available after the city’s planning commission meets in January.

HOLMES BEACH – Planning commissioners are moving forward with the development of a new vision statement for the city.

Commissioners met Dec. 6 for the first time since hosting a community work session in early November. They discussed the data gathered during the session and the next steps to take toward developing an updated statement. The city’s vision statement was

last updated in 2002.

City Planner Bill Brisson encouraged planning commissioners to go through the data received during the work session and come back with their top suggestions in each of the five categories – community character, public safety/natural disaster management, infrastructure, mobility, and natural resources.

His reason for the unwelcome delay is that the data from the work session is inconclusive due to a low number of participants and lack of diversity.

The 10 participants all are homeowners in the city. Without a larger pool of participants providing input, Brisson said some of the suggestions received during the work session should be incorporated into the final draft of the vision statement but shouldn’t be the only

consideration for planning commissioners. Other groups whose interests need to be considered are business owners, visitors and part-time residents.

Planning Commissioner Tom Carlson said he feels many of the ideas posed during the work session are similar to those previously discussed by commissioners.

“I found the conversation to be helpful,” he said.

Planning commission alternate Jaynie Christenson compared the ideas brought up during the work session with those already included in the existing vision statement, saying she feels only minor revisions may be needed to incorporate everything commissioners feel should be addressed.

Commission alternate David Lester said he feels enough time has been

spent on the vision statement and would like to see forward movement to have a draft before city commissioners for consideration in the New Year.

“My concern is this is a very simple thing to do and we’ve been working on it for four or five months,” Lester said.

“This is something we have to get over, and I’d like to get over it soon,” Chair Chuck Stealey said, agreeing that forward movement is needed.

Brisson reminded commissioners to look to a vision of the city in 20-30 years and think about what they feel it should look like when considering what ideas to bring before their fellow commissioners in January.

Planning commissioners agreed to make creating a draft of the vision statement a priority for their January meeting.

Wienermobile drivers relish the attention The Oscar Mayer Company has a fleet of 12 Wienermobiles, and they use six at a time to promote their product around the country.

HOLMES BEACH – in these days of conspicuous consumption, a standout vehicle is a must, and one of the most outstanding set of wheels slowed traffic in Holmes Beach recently by being parked in a resort driveway.

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is a 27-foot-long Fiberglas bun cradling a hot dog that seats six in luxurious captain’s chairs with the corporate logo on them. The carpeting is a random design with yellow splotches representing a hot dog’s best friend – mustard.

“We responded to a recruitment drive while we were in college,” Johnson said.

“I’m hoping to get assigned to the Southwest,” she said. “I would like to be in Texas.”

Their presence is vital to local promotional events. People and companies can hire them through their employer, and they appear and talk about their vehicle.

She said they were elated to get rooms in Cedar Cove.

“The beach is beautiful,” Ricci said Wednesday. “We hear it’s going to get cold

in a couple of days and this is our day off so we’re going to spend some time there today.”

Despite the extra care they take to get the huge vehicle around in cities, Johnson said it’s a fun job.

“People honk their horns and wave all the time,” she said. “It’s a happy thing.”

“We drove a groom and his groomsmen to a wedding once, and they all loved it,” Ricci said.

What would they do when their year is up?

“I wants to get into the music industry, maybe in Nashville,” Johnson said. Ricci

wasn’t sure, but he said he would enjoy this job until it ends.

According to the Oscar Mayer website, the first Wienermobile was made in 1936

by Oscar Mayer’s son, Carl. Over the years, the size changed. One time it was made taller because the company was making plumper hot dogs. There is one Wienermobile on display in the Henry Ford Automobile Museum, in Detroit.

One model of the vehicle has a sound system that plays the advertising jingle in 21 different genres, including Cajun, rap and Bossa Nova.

Catch & release: Pass it on Reel Time RUSTY CHINNIS Talk of catch and release was once common among anglers. These days I’m seeing and hearing less about it and some of the postings in social media make me wonder if this important conservation tool needs to be revisited. Catch and release wasn’t always something you heard about around sportfishing circles.

It became prevalent when fish populations became stressed in the late 1980s and organizations like the Florida Conservation Association (now the Coastal Conservation Association) were being formed. Slowly it caught on as an important tool to help flagging fisheries rebound.

Most anglers I know who practice

catch and release have no problem with taking an occasional fish home for dinner. It's more about enjoying the sport and trying to be proactive in helping it to remain healthy and viable. There are many species, that have little or no food value, that anglers seldom intentionally kill.

But catch and release is not just about releasing fish that you don't want; it's also about releasing undersized and unwanted species. Catch and release is a wise use of the resource, but, unfortunately, many anglers don't know why it’s important or how to properly handle fish.

When we get cut or bruised, we can head for the local drug store or in more extreme cases the emergency room. Not so for fish. For them it's heal or die, and in their world it's the sick and wounded that fall prey to predators. It’s a shame not to release a big speckled trout full of roe, but worse when you do and it’s eaten

Large tides, plentiful baitfish spell success Captain Dave White

Pre-front conditions had fishing very good this last week. With large tides due to the full moon and lots of baitfish prevalent in the area, the recipe for success was definitely there.

We at Anna Maria Charters spent time both inshore and offshore. Targeting everything from big amberjack 40 miles out to snook in the shallow pockets on the grass flats.

I’ve been having no trouble finding shiners and filling the bait well with big, quality baits.

Leave ample time to run to the tackle shop for a few dozen shrimp as well. It’s imperative to have a variety of options when spending long days on the water.

Hogfish have been targeted on our trips lately, with fish in the 6- to 7-pound range coming over the rail from time to time. The big bruiser AJs are loaded up out there. The season is closed for these guys, seemingly making them even easier than normal to catch. Big red grouper are also targeted on these offshore trips, with the most common size being from 10-15 pounds Hopefully, this winter front won’t throw things off too

Anglers fishing with me, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had good action catching and releasing false albacore

(little tunny) and tripletail in the coastal Gulf on flies and trout and pompano in Sarasota Bay on CAL jigs with shad tails during the past week.

Michael Robb, from Buffalo, fished the coastal Gulf with me on Monday and had good action catching and releasing several

albies on a fly. In addition, he also caught and released his first tripletail on a fly. Michael’s dad, Larry, joined him on Wednesday, but despite a stable weather pattern, the action with albies in the coastal Gulf ended as baitfish moved on.

Walter Poxon, from Minnesota, and Bill Poxon, from Sarasota, celebrated Bill’s birthday with their annual fishing trip with me on Tuesday in Sarasota Bay. They had steady action catching and releasing numerous trout and a nice pompano on the west side of the bay on CAL jigs with shad tails.

With the passing of this weekend’s front, water temperatures will plummet, and fish will move. Migratory species could reappear following the front depending on conditions. After the weather stabilizes, there should also be good action with trout, blues and more on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. Shallow water action for snook, trout and reds is improving due to cooler water. Fishing lighted docks and bridges in the ICW for catch and release snook with flies and DOA Lures should also be a good option.

by a shark, barracuda or other predator because it wasn't handled properly. Releasing fish with a minimum of damage is important with a 6 pound trout, a 150 pound tarpon and everything in between.

The first thing to do is make sure you’re using the right tackle for the species being pursued. Trying to land a 100 plus pound tarpon on 20-pound tackle might be OK if you're experienced, but to the uninitiated it's like announcing a free meal to sharks that ply local waters looking for weak or injured prey. You want to enjoy the action, but landing fish as quickly as possible is important to their survival.

Once you have the fish subdued, the best course is to never take them out of the water. If you've been fighting a big fish, like a tarpon, for a long time make sure you have revived them alongside the boat.

This is best done by slowly moving the boat forward while holding the fish. This

forces water and oxygen through their gills.

They'll let you know when they're ready to go. Other fast swimming fish like little tunny, kingfish and Spanish mackerel need to be released quickly and launched head first to give them a head start.

The hook is another important consideration. Circle hooks and barbless hooks are good for anglers and fish. Circle hooks are a must for fragile fish that tend to swallow hooks, speckled trout being a good example. These hooks are designed to lodge in the fish’s jaw and there’s no need to set the hook.

Once a circle hook is set it seldom comes out. Some anglers don’t like to bend their barbs down because they’re afraid the fish will spit the hook. The key to keeping fish on a barbless hook is to keep the line tight.

Whatever hook you use, a de-hooker will prevent you from having to handle your catch, keep your hands clean and prevent you from inadvertently harming the fish's

protective mucus membrane.

Fish secrete a protective coating that covers the scales and skin. This acts as a defense against invasion by bacterial, parasitic and fungal pathogens. De-hookers come in various shapes depending on how they're used. The simplest is J shaped and removes hooks in or near the jaw. A circular shaped longer version allows anglers to remove hooks that are deep in the throat of a fish. A set of pliers can also be used if the hook is easily assessable.

Anglers who fish for reef fish like snapper and grouper need to learn how to vent fish with inflated swim bladders. Bringing the fish up from deep depths quickly bloats their bladder, which has to be punctured to allow the fish to reach the bottom. A good presentation of the process can be found on YouTube.

Anglers that release a trophy sized fish may want to take home a picture. Some forethought will assure a good image and a

healthy fish. Set your exposure in advance and have an idea where in the boat you want to take the picture. The best option, especially for large fish like tarpon, would be while it's still in the water. If it’s a smaller fish and you do remove it from the water, hold it horizontally with one hand near the head and the other hand under the fish’s belly to support its weight. Holding a fish vertically puts a strain on the internal organs and can potentially dislocate its jaw.

This is particularly important with larger fish.

By being prepared, anglers can release their catch fast helping to insure its chances of survival. Taking the time and having the tools and knowledge to release fish properly is a great way to help insure a healthy resource both now and in the future. Catch and release is an important concept that needs to be practiced and discussed among anglers.

Santa highlights Christmas on Bridge Street The Bridge Street Merchants Association and The Anna Maria Island Sun sponsor this event.

BRADENTON BEACH – Christmas comes to Bridge Street on Saturday, Dec. 16, from noon to 8 p.m. with live music, Santa, the Anna Maria Island Privateers, food, drinks and shopping at the stores along the city’s business

district. Stone Crab Steve, Rebecca The Song Bird, Bridgids Cross, Barry and The Boomers featuring Washboard Betty and many other notable musicians will provide musical entertainment. There will be gift baskets and wreaths to be sold in a silent auction.

There will be face painting and sand art. Restaurants along the street will be open for dining as well as the bars and lounges for drinking. Most of the organized activities will be at the empty lot at 117 Bridge St.

Clancy’s 10th Annual Shamrock Shiver hits the beach The proceeds go to an at-risk children’s charity.

BRADENTON BEACH – A New Year’s Day tradition, the Shamrock Shiver, happens again at noon on Jan. 1 at the beach at Seventh Avenue South.

Participants must be there by 11:15 a.m.

Sponsored by Clancy’s Irish Pub, a Post Plunge Party will follow at Clancy’s, 6218 Cortez Rd., Bradenton, with door prizes, beverages, food and live music.

There is a costume party to go along with the dip in the Gulf.

Contestants receive a free raffle ticket. They will be judged by crowd participation, and the winner’s trophy will be awarded at the Post Plunge Party.

One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit Caring for Children Charities, d/b/a Florida Winefest & Auction, a 501 (c) 3 organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged children in Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Since 2009, this event has raised more than $195,000 for area children’s charities.

This event might have some cooler temperatures, but that’s a good way to banish those post New Year’s Eve hangovers.

BRADENTON BEACH – Tickets for the AMI Privateers’ fundraising lotto board are now on sale at the Drift In in Bradenton Beach. The lotto board includes a $100 bill and $200 worth of scratch off lottery tickets.

Privateer Linda Sullivan said last year’s lotto board winner won an additional $700 when scratching off the tickets she won. A single ticket costs $5, three tickets are $10 and eight tickets are $20. Tickets for the infamous booze basket are also on sale for the same prices.

The drawings will take place Saturday, Dec. 16, at approximately 10 p.m., and you do not need to be present to win. The Drift In and the Privateers will also host a pot luck dinner that evening as an extension of the Christmas on

Instead of having a party with a special menu, this year’s Beach House guests will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis with the regular menu. This year the remodeled Beach House will offer a new deck, outside bar and sunken lounge area for the enjoyment of customers.

Obituaries Arthur Nile 'Ted' Baird Arthur Nile “Ted” Baird, 81, of Bradenton Beach, Fla., passed away on Oct. 21, 2017, in Wilmington, Del., in the care of his loving family. He was born on Feb. 5, 1936 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Roland and Edna HayesBaird.

Ted’s childhood was spent in various towns in Idaho and Utah. He graduated from Butte High School in Arco, Idaho, in 1954. He then enlisted in the Navy submarine group and served a total of 20 years during the Cold War on five different submarines including: Wahoo (1954-56), Corporal (1958-59), Snook (1964-66), Lafayette (1969-72), and William H Bates (1973-74). He retired from the Navy in 1974 having achieved the rank of Master Chief. He briefly attended college at Idaho State College in Pocatello, Idaho, on a Phillips Petroleum scholarship, pursuing a degree in electronic engineering. Ted worked for Westinghouse as a nuclear engineer where he spent seven years in South Korea until 1986 as site manager of the Kori Nuclear Power facility. He moved to Millville, N.J., in 1987 and retired from Westinghouse in 1996.

After retirement, Ted loved ballroom and country-line dancing with his wife, Luanne, as well as playing his organ.

He was a talented artist and published author. He was a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge. Ted will be fondly remembered by family and friends worldwide and especially those at the Sandpiper Resort and in the Bradenton area.

Ted was preceded in death by his father and mother, Roland and Edna, his older brother, Roland “Ronny” Hayes, his eldest son, Arthur Nile Jr, and his grandchild Andrew John “AJ” Baird.

Kent Chetlain Kent Gladstone Chetlain “the second” passed away December 4, 2017 at Inspired Living at Lakewood Ranch.

He was a former Manatee County Commissioner, Florida newsman, writer and for 55 years, husband of Mary “Joanne” Chetlain, who passed away in 2007. Born in Oak Park, Ill., on Sept. 20, 1927, to Kent G. Chetlain Sr. and Margaret Virginia Castle. Kent grew up living in North Shore area of Lake Michigan, just north of Chicago, until 1943 when the family purchased a farm and moved to Woodstock, Ill. In 1945, they moved back to Glencoe on the North Shore, and Kent graduated from New Trier High School in 1946.

He graduated from Gila Junior College in eastern Arizona in 1948 and the University of Miami in 1951, majoring in history and journalism. He started his journalism career at the Miami Herald in 1951, where he met Joanne Lacey, who was working in the ad department.

They were married the same year.

Kent worked for a radio station in Arizona and for newspapers in Sanford and Orlando and a brief stint at Tropicana that brought the young couple to Bradenton in 1957. He started at the Bradenton Herald in 1957, became sports editor in 1962 and remained in that position until 1969, when he accepted a job with the Tampa Tribune.

In 1971 he became the news editor for the Florida Trend Magazine, also in Tampa, and in 1973, the family moved back to Bradenton, Fla., where he again worked for the Bradenton Herald, as well as, the Islander/Banner of Anna Maria and records manager for the Clerk of the Circuit Court.

In 1982, he was elected to the Board of Manatee County Commissioners and served three consecutive terms for a total of 12 years. During this time, he served as chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, as well as, chairman of the West Coast Inland Navigation District, Manatee County Tourist Development Council, Manatee County Port Authority and SarasotaManatee County Metropolitan Planning Organization. After retiring in 1994 at age 67, Kent wrote a real estate column for the Longboat Key Observer for the

next 13 years and in 2009 at the age 81, he retired from his 43-year career as a journalist, politician and public servant.

Kent is survived by two daughters, Dr. Mary Lou Zoback, Stanford, Calif., and Anna Chetlain, St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sons, Kent Chetlain III, Sarasota, FL, and Paul Chetlain, Bradenton, Fla.; five grandchildren, Eli Zoback, Orinda, CA, Megan Zoback, San Francisco, Calif., Joshua Knapek, Palmetto, Fla., Erika Chetlain, Anna Maria, Fla., and Abigail Chetlain, Houston, Texas.

Danny Wayne Hart Danny Wayne Hart, 64, of Bradenton, Fla., passed away suddenly on November 18, 2017 in Gulfport, Miss.

Purchasing the necessary ingredients in advance reduces the mad panic that naturally happens around the holidays. Although I function best under a certain amount of stress, I know my limits!

Our family has perennial favorite dishes, but I always incorporate something new at the table. Planning the new items gives me a chance to sit back with a cup of coffee and look at many new and delicious recipes online and in magazines. It's a rare chance to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and have just a few moments for myself – with justification! Sometimes I substitute wine for coffee and start my search all over again. Planning ahead also helps when you are new to an area and need to source some special items.

One of our family’s favorite dishes is Kassler. Its a smoked bone in pork loin. I hope to find it from a local specialty

Combine cookie crumbs and butter. Press into bottom and sides of a 10-inch greased spring form pan. Bake at 350º for 8 minutes. Completely cool.

Patrick Hicks, who manages our Hurricane Liquors store, has shared the following recipe for my consideration. Patrick is an incredibly talented cook, singer and all around entertainer. I trust his impeccable taste.

While I don’t like to over complicate recipes, I do like to add a flavored whipped cream to my desserts. For this recipe I recommend whipping heavy cream until stiff and then adding Limoncello liquor to the whip. The sweet lemon whipped cream will compliment the lemon rind in the cheesecake.

Pairing a nice after dinner drink with the dessert will definitely make the evening complete. If you haven’t yet tried Amarula Cream Liquor I recommend it! The liquor is made from the fruit of marula trees in Africa. The fruit is fermented, distilled and aged for two years in French oak barrels before being blended into a velvety cream and bottled.

Alternatively, the Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon would compliment the pecans wonderfully. Rev. Elijah Craig was a bourbon pioneer who is credited with being the first distiller to age his whiskey in charred oak barrels. The taste is smooth and warm with a long sweet finish.

Beat cream cheese until creamy. Gradually add 1 3/4 c. sugar, flour and vanilla. Add eggs and egg yolks, one at a time, beating until the yellow just disappears. Stir in whipping cream and lemon rind. Pour into crust.

Bake at 350º on lower oven rack for 10 minutes.

Reduce temperature to 325º and back an additional 1 hour and 20 minutes. Cool at least one hour.

Add 1/3 c. sugar to sour cream and spread over cheesecake. Bake at 325º for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from oven and cool. Once cool, chill for 8 hours or more. Garnish with additional pralines.

Tis the season to talk tax reform – again

I

know it’s the holiday season, and the thought of reading any more about tax reform is probably at the bottom of your list of things to care or think about. Unfortunately, for some homeowners, it better get moved to the top of the list and fast.

One of the many features of the proposed tax reform bills concerning homeownership is the number of years you must live in your primary residence in order to qualify for the capital gains exclusion of $250,000 for single individuals or $500,000 for married couples.

Currently, you must live, again in your primary residence, two out of the last five years. The proposed change is that you must live in the home at least five years out of the last eight.

The senate bill carves out an exception if the property is in contract by Jan. 1, of next year, even if it doesn’t close till later in 2018.

However, the house bill does not provide this exemption and would require homeowners to close on the property by the end of this year in order to qualify for the capital gains

Should either one of these bills pass and are effective in the new year, it will have a serious effect on homeowners who want to sell or must sell and do not comply with the new regulations. In addition, if you are in the process of selling with a contract in hand, my suggestion is to do everything you can to close within the next couple of weeks.

As far as the other issues contained in the proposed bills written by both the House and the Senate, there is another school of thought as to the damage to homeowners vs. the benefit to the housing market overall.

Some economists believe that rolling back some of the subsidies homeowners now enjoy

would actually increase the supply of homes.

Here are some of the reasons why: One big thing, especially for Anna Maria Island and all of Florida, is the elimination of the home mortgage interest for second homes.

The theory is that if demand for second homes goes down since the incentive to write off the mortgage interest is no longer available, then builders would shift to building more primary homes, thus increasing the amount of inventory available. Also, some current second home owners might decide it’s more cost effective to just make their second home their primary home, again freeing up available inventory.

Next, if the amount of a mortgage deduction is capped at $500,000, some buyers would choose to purchase less expensive homes, especially if the standard deduction is doubled and fewer mortgage holders choose not to itemize. These changes would take the federal tax incentive that many home purchasers consider when making their financial decisions out of the calculation. Homeowners financ-

ing homes in the $150,000 to $400,000 range would probably benefit more from doubling the standard deduction than itemizing, making homes in this range more popular. Philosophy being, lower prices due to loss of subsidies will ultimately allow more low wealth Americans to become homeowners stabilizing the market.

And, finally, lower and fewer mortgage debt would reduce the impact on taxpayers who subsidize Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Remember the financial crisis and what it cost all Americans to bail out these government backed agencies.

What do I think? I think this is all too complicated and way above my pay scale to voice an opinion on. I just thought a different point of view might calm the hysteria I’m hearing about the demise of the housing market. As I’ve said before, people buy homes primarily to live in, although I do worry about the second home market and the effect on Florida, I hope I’m wrong.

The weather was perfect for the annual re-enactment of Joseph and Mary’s search for a room for the birth of their baby, but the donkey llama and lambs from east of Bradenton that normally accompany them never made it due a mechanical problem on their trailer.

Sunshine lawsuit costs discussed The legal costs associated with a Sunshine Law lawsuit filed against former advisory board members have exceeded $35,000.

BRADENTON BEACH – The first meeting of the newly-reconfigured city commission led by Mayor John Chappie featured multiple discussions on the Sunshine Law lawsuit filed against six city board and committee members.

When the Thursday, Dec. 7 meeting began, Commissioner Marilyn Maro asked that an invoice submitted by attorney Robert Watrous be removed from the consent agenda for additional discussion. Maro said some of her constituents asked about the growing cost of the lawsuit.

Watrous is representing the city in the Sunshine lawsuit and paralegal Michael Barfield is providing additional legal assistance.

Initiated jointly by the city commission and city resident Jack Clarke, the lawsuit filed in August alleges four Planning and Zoning Board members and two Scenic Waves Committee members

violated the Florida Sunshine Law. The alleged violations pertain to the board and committee members discussing a potential parking garage prohibition outside of a properly noticed public meeting. The resulting investigation then produced evidence of additional possible violations stemming from the defendants’ email exchanges.

During general public comment, lawsuit defendant and former planning board member Patty Shay told the commission that due to the expense she would no longer be represented by an attorney and would now represent herself as the case moves forward.

“I can only imagine how much it will eventually cost the city,” she said.

“Some people who represent the city have assured the citizens that after the case is settled, the legal costs will be redeemed by payment from the defendants, but is that really the case?” Shay asked.

Shay suggested the resignations of all six board and committee members cured the alleged violations.

“What is the objective of this lawsuit?” she said.

Shade meeting expenses

When discussing a consent agenda for the first time, new Commissioner Randy White questioned the $1,000 expense listed in the $10,395 monthly invoice submitted by City Attorney Ricinda Perry.

The expense pertained to legal services Perry provided regarding a lawsuitrelated, attorney-client shade meeting in September.

Chappie told White the confidential shade meeting could not be discussed at a public meeting and he suggested he discuss it with Perry privately. White then cast the only opposition vote to paying Perry’s invoice in its entirety.

Later, when asked to the approve the $14,597 Watrous invoice Maro questioned, White said, “What do the residents gain from this? This is their money.”

He then cast the only vote in opposition to paying it.

Litigation update

During her litigation update, Perry responded to Maro’s original question.

She said the city has been invoiced $35,800 so far for services provided by Watrous and Barfield.

Perry also responded to a question posed by Shay, who was no longer present.

“The sole purpose of the lawsuit is the city of Bradenton Beach must have all public records of all of its board members. Anybody who’s serving the city must turn those into our clerk. In this instance, individuals did not do this,” Perry said.

“It’s the defendants who are driving this cost. All we wanted were the documents, the admission of what was done and the ability to cure it. So far, the defendants have refused to do that,” she added.

“If the city wins, then the costs to the city could be recouped in some manner and a judge would decide who pays how much?” Chappie inquired.

“That has been the case in the past, where the judge has said this one is more culpable than this one. The judge has the statutory authority to give the city back the money it cost to correct these board members’ behavior,” Perry said.

Perry said she expects the preliminary legal proceedings to resume in January.

Inaugural Skyway 10K announced ST. PETERSBURG – The Armed Forces Families Foundation (AFFF) announced plans last week to host the inaugural Skyway 10K run across the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge on Sunday, March 4.

The press release issued last week said the Skyway 10K will salute military families and be the first run to cross the Skyway Bridge, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to support AFFF. The run will begin on I-275 at the rest area just south of the bridge and end at the rest area on the north side of the bridge. The entry fee is $75. Registration is open now and expected to sell out quickly.

The inaugural race will be capped at 7,000 participants and is expected to grow larger in future years. To register, visit www.skyway10k.com.

Organizers are currently trying to work out a way for family members and friends who wish to spectate to see their loved ones cross the finish line by viewing

monitors from a spectating area at Tropicana Field.

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge crosses three counties, including Hillsborough, Pinellas and Manatee.

“The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is the northern gateway to Manatee County, and the Skyway 10K has all the makings of an outstanding event for this area,” Manatee County Administrator Ed Hunzeker said in the press release.

“People will come from far and wide to be a part of history and to see the breathtaking views from atop the Skyway. Best of all, the proceeds will go to benefit local veterans and their families,” he added.

Jiffy Lube takes the Hayward Cup

The pitch at the Island’s community center was warmed up and ready for the big championship game after three fun filled pick-up games with current and former league members. As the spectators filled the bleachers and stands, the anticipation of the much-awaited final game of the season thickened.

At the conclusion of last week’s semi-final match-ups, it was clear that Danny Anderson’s Team Jiffy Lube was the team to beat. The eight-player squad moved like a well-oiled machine, making great passes and taking shots on goal challenging the opponents defense to the hilt.

Veterans in the goal, Jason Sato for Jiffy Lube and David Greene for Slim’s Place took their places in the box for 46 minutes of championship soccer.

Matt Kretzmann and Damir Glavan started the game strong for Slim’s Place with solid ball movement down the field, but Sato’s fearless play kept the ball out of the net.

Jiffy Lube’s Eliza Faillace made her move only to have the Greene make the save. Ricky Anderson and Chis Klotz turned up the game with corner shots and strikes.

Greene showed his Ultimate Frisbee tenacity and agility saving goal shots by both Anderson brothers within seconds of each other.

The intensity of the game was apparent on the field. After 12 minutes of play, Klotz and Kretzmann tumbled with a yellow card handed out as a quick warning by the referees to keep the game under control.

Quick goals by Kretzmann and D. Anderson made it a 1-1 match and got the scoring going deep into the first half of the game.

The penalty called on Kretzmann and free shot by D. Anderson ignited Jiffy Lube’s energy level, moving the game to a whole different level of action.

Klotz found the net with his only goal of the game in the 20th minute of play. Chris Culhane scored his first goal 90 seconds later, giving Jiffy Lube a two point lead.

With the scoreboard clock ticking down, Slim’s Place’s Greg DeMeuse tried to make something happen with a shot that went right of the post. The official time left two minutes in the first half of the game, but neither team

Second half play started with a rapidfire shot and score by Angela Wiles for Slim’s Place, moving the score to 2-3. More than six minutes later after heavy defensive play by both teams, R. Anderson was denied his goal, but Culhane hit his second shot of the big game, once again giving Jiffy Lube a two point lead.

Brad Laudicina worked both ends of the field for Jiffy Lube, while Charles Buky and Lyn Clark aggressively worked the defensive end for Slim’s Place.

Kretzmann hit the net less than a minute later. D. Anderson answered back with a goal of his own taking the score to 3-5.

DeMeuse made a move of his own, only to have Sato make the stop.

The dynamic duo of Anderson and Anderson put another point up for Jiffy Lube with D. Anderson taking the ball down the field to find R. Anderson ready to finish.

against Slim’s Place’s captain Kris Yavalar, who played strong with a nagging injury.

Kretzmann’s free kick took a curve right into the net. With the score 4-6 the battle continued with a DeMeuse shot, save after save by Greene and a dangerous play call for a high kick by Klotz.

Making outstanding saves of his own, Sato kept the soccer ball out of the net for the remaining minutes for Jiffy Lube, despite the many efforts by Team Slim’s Place.

With no time on the scoreboard clock and seconds of official time, Klotz scored the last point of the game with a beautiful free kick, finishing the game with the score 4-7. Jiffy Lube captured the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup championship game with amazing teamwork and solid play all season.

During their Dec. 7 meeting, Perry told city commissioners the complaint was dismissed.

“Again Mr. Metz lost,” she said, referencing previous unsuccessful legal actions and informal complaints Metz has initiated against the city and its residents.

Perry said she spent $5,000 on the attorney who defended her against Metz’s Bar complaint. She said she would not ask the city to cover those legal expenses, even though they were incurred while providing legal services to the city and its Planning and Zoning Board.

“I don’t like the idea of you having to pay for this,” Mayor John Chappie said, suggesting the possible reimbursement of Perry’s personal legal expenses be discussed at a future meeting.

“Thank you. It’s a generous consideration, but I’m not going to make that request of you,” Perry said.

“That’s horrible,” Commissioner Jake Spooner said of Metz’s actions.

Strickland was not FEMA certified.

The commission terminated Strickland on Nov. 30 for failing to comply with FEMA reporting requirements regarding the city’s participation in the Community Rating System (CRS) that is part of FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program.

Strickland’s failures resulted in the city receiving notification on Oct. 30 that CRS reviewer Craig Carpenter was recommending FEMA reduce the city’s CRS rating from a class 5 down to a class 10. If enacted as recommended, the rating retrograde would result in the loss of the 25 percent flood insurance rate discount currently given to policy holders in Anna Maria. The city has been part of the CRS program for more than 20 years.

In response to Carpenter’s e-mail, city staff was given 20 days to provide the documents requested to verify the city’s CRS compliance.

Last week, Murphy told commissioners no final determination had been made yet regarding the flood jeopardized insurance discounts. He said he hoped to have those answers in a week or two.

Commissioner Carol Carter asked Murphy if he had any concerns about Greenbaum only being with the town of Longboat Key for six months.

He also had two short stints of employment in New York from 2015 until his hiring in Longboat Key. Commissioners Brian Seymour and Doug Copeland

said they also had preliminary concerns about that.

Murphy said Greenbaum’s New York jobs were necessitated by family matters and he cited Greenbaum’s service as chief building official for the Seminole Tribe of Florida from 2007 to 2015.

Greenbaum will be a city employee and report directly to Murphy, whereas Strickland was a contracted employee of the M.T. Causley firm. Murphy plans to reorganize the building department and the Bureau Veritas firm will continue to assist the building department while awaiting Greenbaum’s arrival.

When contacted Friday, Greenbaum said he would know the results of his certification test results in January.

He said much of the certification training pertained to the record keeping and documentation required of CRS participants.

“It’s something that demands attention all the time,” he said.

Regarding his new job in Anna Maria, Greenbaum said, “I look forward to it, and I appreciate the opportunity to serve the public health, safety and welfare for the city.”
