Cortez Bridge hearing denied

CORTEZ – The Florida Department of Transportation has dismissed with prejudice a second request for a formal administrative hearing regarding FDOT’s plans to someday replace the Cortez Bridge drawbridge with a 65-foot-high fixed-span bridge.

FDOT issued its final order on Tuesday, Dec. 10 and sent a copy to Joe McClash as the qualified representative of the petitioners who oppose the fixed span bridge. In addition to McClash, the petitioners include Cortez residents Jane von Hahmann, Joe Kane and Linda Molto and the Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage, the Cortez Historical Society and ManaSota-88.

These individuals and organizations sought a formal hearing before an administrative law judge associated with the State of Florida Division of Administrative Hearings concerning the legality of the process that led to FDOT’s decision to replace the existing drawbridge with a higher fixedspan bridge.

FDOT’s final order notes the first petition for formal administrative hearing was filed on Oct. 29 and resulted in an order of dismissal without prejudice that stated

the Division of Administrative Hearings did not have jurisdiction over the claims made by the petitioners. That order gave the petitioners 10 days to file an amended petition.

The final order issued on Dec. 10 noted the petitioners responded by arguing that their initial petition for a formal administrative hearing was appropriate for review by the Division of Administrative Hearings but failed to provide adequate allegations for any agency action to be reviewed in accordance with Florida statutes.

The Dec. 10 order states that in both instances the petitioners alleged FDOT failed to comply with a memorandum of understanding between FDOT, the Federal Highway Administration and the National Environmental Policy Act. “The department (FDOT) and derivatively the Florida Division of Administrative Hearings lacks jurisdiction over petitioners’ claims. It is thus ordered that the first amended petition for formal administrative hearing is dismissed with prejudice for lack of jurisdiction,” the final order states.

BRADENTON BEACH – A celebration of life for Kyle Shell will be held at the Sports Lounge and the Drift In in Bradenton Beach on Saturday, Dec. 28, from 2 to 6 p.m.

The celebration of life will double as a fundraiser for Shell’s 17-year-old daughter Kaya Sage Shell and the funds raised will assist with her future college education.

Anna Maria Oyster Bar, the Beach House, Blue Marlin, the Bridge Tender Inn, Island Time, the Swordfish Grill and U.S. Foods are donating the food that will be sold and served at the Drift In. Numerous Island and Island-area businesses have donated gift baskets, gifts cards and prize-packages for the raffles that will take place inside the Sports Lounge. Shell, a Bradenton Beach resident, passed away on Dec. 3 at the age of 42.

Holiday trash schedule and closures The Christmas holidays are upon us and with it comes government office closures and changes to recycling, trash and yard waste collection schedules.

Both Waste Pro and Waste Management will be following their holiday collection schedules.

Trash, recycling and yard waste collections will take place as scheduled on Tuesday, Dec. 24. No collections will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 25.

Customers with normal Wednesday collection will have their trash, recycling or yard waste collected on Thursday.

The same schedule applies to the following week for the New Years holiday with regularly scheduled pickups taking place on Tuesday, Dec. 31 and no pickups on Jan. 1. Regular Wednesday pickups will take place on Thursday, Jan. 2.

City offices in all three Island cities, Anna Maria, Bradenton Beach and Holmes Beach, will be closed Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, Christmas Day, Dec. 25, and New Years Day, Jan. 1.

The Center of Anna Maria Island will close at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 23 and remain closed Dec. 2425, reopening at 7 a.m. on Dec. 26. The Center will close Dec. 31 at 1 p.m., reopening at 7 a.m. on Jan. 2.

The Tingley Memorial Library and Island Branch Library both will be closed Dec. 24-25 for the Christmas holiday. The Island Branch Library and Tingley Memorial Library will be open Dec. 31, but will be closed Jan. 1.

Sarasota couple killed in car crash Sarasota philanthropists Charles Barancik, 91, and his wife, Margery Barancik, 83, died after their car was struck by a Longboat Key police car on Dec. 18 on Gulf of Mexico Drive on Longboat Key, according to the Sarasota Police Department.

The officer, whose SUBMITTED name had not been released by press time, was responding to a call when his vehicle struck the Baranciks’ vehicle as they left their home. The officer was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with injuries.

The Baranciks donated to several causes in the arts, culture, education and medical arenas, including a $106,000 grant this year to Sarasota Bay Watch to support its clam restoration initiative, the Manatee Community Foundation, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and many others.

Florida manatee boating deaths rise

Florida manatee deaths have reached 545 in 2019, 13 more than the five-year average of 532, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

At least 129 of the state’s official marine mammals were killed by watercraft collisions as of Dec. 13, five more than last year’s previous boating strike record of 124.

In addition, 74 died from natural causes, 72 perished just before or after birth, 53 died from cold stress, five died from entrapments in flood gates or canal locks, five from other human causes, 110 from undetermined causes and 97 were unrecovered with causes unknown.

In Manatee County, 17 manatee deaths were recorded, including seven listed as natural causes, five from watercraft, two perinatal deaths, two undetermined and one from cold stress.

Make a difference – help The Center I read the Island Sun last week and saw that our Community Center could use our help to guarantee future financial stabilization.

They operate on a slim margin to maintain the glue that keeps this community together. After events, I see Director Chris Culhane and staff set up and put away tables and chairs for functions with 300-700 attendees so The Center can open next morning.

We have a few more days before the end of the year to write a check or consider starting an endowment or funding mechanism to keep our Center stable for years to come. It cost a little over $1 million a year for operations plus unexpected capital expenses. The staff works hard to keep the doors open.

The Center stepped up when the school and Pine Avenue festival needed a place in a pinch this year.

I frequented The Center at a young age 50 years

ago, my daughter was in all activities and now my grandchildren are. As a longtime Islander, I know we care about our Island. If anyone wants to make a difference, consider a contribution or a way to help before the end of the year.

Better notice needed on pine removals I hope we are given advance notice if they (Manatee County) plan on removing anymore Australian pines in Holmes Beach. After 28 years here, I don’t want to live in a mini-Miami Beach. Those large homes impacted the flavor enough. We can't take more absurd decisions.

Cortez Beach parking plan presented to county commissioners The discussions about a proposed parking shuttle program at Cortez Beach will continue.

BRADENTON BEACH – Manatee County commissioners expressed some support and some concerns about a proposed parking shuttle program at Cortez Beach in Bradenton Beach.

Representatives of the Bradenton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and others discussed the proposed shuttle program with county commissioners on Tuesday, Dec. 17. No final decisions were made, and county commissioners want more details before committing county resources.

The CRA proposes people park south of Bridge Street at Cortez Beach and Coquina Beach and catch electric, golf cart-like trams that transport them to the Bridge Street business district and other points of interest in that area. The CRA is trying to address the lack of parking on and around Bridge Street.

Owned by Manatee County, Cortez Beach begins at the intersection of Gulf Drive and Fourth Street South, extends south and connects with Coquina Beach, which also is county owned.

City Engineer Lynn Burnett presented the proposed parking program to county commissioners.

“This is not asking for county money.

We’re not asking the county to take the lead. We have the funding. We just want to make sure that as we’re moving forward with this that we’re arm in arm and have your support,” Burnett said.

“We’re not looking to reduce any parking. We have surplus of parking in certain places during certain times. It’s connecting those pieces so people can get from point A to point D,” Burnett said.

Burnett said she will seek written confirmation from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection that the CRA’s proposed parking plan would not negatively impact beach renourishment projects.

COMMISSION CONCERNS

County Commissioner and Island resident Carol Whitmore said she’s concerned about protecting the beach parking spaces used by Manatee County residents and the surfers who surf off of Cortez Beach when the surf’s up.

In response to a question from Whitmore, Burnett said the county owns those Gulf-side parcels, but they are bisected in several places by city-owned rights of way.

Whitmore asked if parking garages are allowed in Bradenton Beach. City

Attorney Ricinda Perry said they are prohibited by the city’s land development code and comprehensive plan.

Burnett said the trams would travel from the north end of Coquina Beach along the west side of Gulf Drive, down Fifth Street South, to Bridge Street and over to the Bradenton Beach Marina before turning around.

Burnett said the city and the CRA would pay for the tram operations, and there may also be advertising revenue opportunities similar to the free Island trolley.

Commissioner Betsy Benac said, “If there’s something I’ve learned over the past years is that people hate change, especially at the beach. The devil is going to be in the details, and we don’t have a lot of details.”

Burnett said any reconfiguration of the existing parking spaces would be to done to eliminate vehicles backing onto Gulf Drive when leaving. Benac questioned whether there’s enough space to do that.

“I like the idea that Manatee County’s

not being asked to write any checks, but I think you’ve got a lot of work ahead of you,” Commissioner Steve Jonsson said.

Bradenton Beach Area Merchants president Sherman Baldwin said the merchants unanimously support the proposed parking program. He said the shuttle service would also provide better access to the Bridge Street Pier that’s currently underserved by public transportation.

Baldwin also is part of a group that’s considering running a ferry service between downtown Sarasota, Bradenton Beach and downtown Bradenton. He said the ferry service would need other modes of transportation to get ferry riders to and from the ferry stops.

CRA member Ed Chiles said the biggest problem in Bradenton Beach is the lack of parking in the downtown core.

He said the only surplus parking is the 1,800 parking spaces at Cortez Beach and Coquina Beach, which he said are rarely full, except for weekends and holidays.

“Surfers are not out there on a holiday when the sun is out. They’re out there on a stormy day when the waves are up,” Chiles added.

Perry said the CRA can already run trams up and down the Cortez Beach and Coquina Beach parking areas without a dedicated pathway or county permission.

“All I’m asking for is a seat at the table. Let us work with your staff to get to the devil that’s in the details to make sure we put the best plan forward,” Perry said.

“Sounds like a good plan, keep it moving,” Commissioner Priscilla Trace said.

distributed an email in which he shared his thoughts on FDOT’s decision.

“FDOT issued a final order dismissing our petition stating FDOT and DOAH lack jurisdiction to hear the issues raised.

This is a disappointing decision, but not unexpected. FDOT took action under a memorandum of understanding with the Federal Highway Administration. The agreement clearly defines actions the state must comply with for replacing a project like the Cortez Bridge. These actions taken on behalf of the federal government are state actions. However, in its desire to place a roadblock to a review by an administrative law judge, FDOT claims these actions are not state actions,” McClash stated in his email.

“This ruling defies logic, and most of all allows a state agency to dictate to our community the type of mega bridge or other road projects without recourse provided by our state’s rules. We will evaluate the decision and make a decision by January 10 to appeal this decision, a decision that FDOT exceeds its authority by not forwarding the petition as required to DOAH,” McClash’s email concluded.

ANNA MARIA – A displaced female osprey has a new nesting place thanks to the combined efforts of the Lake La Vista Homeowners Association and part-time resident Kay Johnson, Florida Power and Light, Volt Power, and Anna Maria Public Works Manager Dean Jones.

On Thursday, Dec. 19, a crew from Volt Power attached a custom-fabricated aluminum nesting platform to a wooden utility pole and then set the pole in place on a vacant lakefront lot on Lakeview Drive owned by the homeowners association.

Jones was on hand Thursday morning when the pole and platform were set in place.

“There was a Norfolk pine that was cut down legally across the street. There was not an active nest, so by FWC rules they’re allowed to cut it down. That displaced the osprey, and the osprey has been hanging around,” Jones explained.

“Kay Johnson called me and asked me if we could do anything about it. I called my contacts at FP&L, and they were able to secure a pole for us. Volt is a subcontractor of FP&L and FP&L is paying for their time today. The city has no cost in this project,” Jones said.

Volt crewmember Cole Willis said he and his co-workers install about 10 to 12 nesting platforms a year.

them too,” Jones said. “And this goes back to the city wanting to be stewards of the environment and keeping our natural habitats strong. We’re glad the city could be a part of this,” Jones said.

Later that morning, Jones reported activity already taking place at the new platform.

“We hadn’t had the nest up for more than an hour and a half and we already had a mating pair there. It’s really a highlight of the year for me seeing this situation turn out so good. It feels amazing,” he said.

On Friday, Jones said the female osprey was gathering materials and building a nest. He said he was pretty sure the female osprey occupying the new platform is the same osprey displaced by the tree removal.

“The females are normally 15 to 20 percent larger than the males, so that’s definitely a female sitting up there. From what I can tell from the ground, she has the same markings as the displaced bird. And the male that’s hanging around appears to have the same

markings as her mate,” Jones said.

When contacted at her other home in New York, Johnson said she and her husband, Gary, arrived at their Anna Maria home on Nov. 18 for a three-week stay. The following day they heard a loud noise that turned out to be the grinding of a tree stump.

“My heart sank. I looked up and the massive twin-trunk Norfolk pine was gone,” Johnson said via email.

The couple had watched the osprey pair nest and raise their young in that tree for at least six years.

“I heard her chirping and knew she was still around,” Johnson said.

She arranged for a pole to be installed on the homeowners association property and the association agreed to pay for the platform made by All Steel Fabricating.

“It all came together after we left for our home in Jamestown, New York,” Johnson said. “I am so appreciative of all the support I received in providing our osprey with a nest platform. I felt she would accept it quickly, but I had no idea how quickly. I told Dean our neighborhood is whole again.

A fish tale

F

or thousands of years our ancestors have been smoking fish as a means of preserving the meat. During a time without refrigeration, they had to come up with a creative way to prevent it from spoiling. They found out that slow smoking and salting the fish would actually dehydrate it and deter growth of harmful bacteria. During the Middle Ages, many of the communities even went to the extent of constructing smokehouses to preserve it. However, the less fortunate communities that could not afford a smokehouse would just hang the meat inside their chimneys as a way of preservation.

Cold Smoked Salmon Ingredients

2–3 lbs. salmon fillet fresh

Brine Ingredients

1-gal. water 1 Tbs. crushed black peppercorns 1/4 cup maple syrup or molasses 1 ½ cups brown sugar 1 ½ cups coarse sea salt 2 cloves of crushed garlic 2 whole bay leaves

Garnishes (optional but recommended)

Brined capers, drained Brioche toast points or crackers, toasted or grilled Fresh dill, chopped Lemons, sliced Red onion, thinly sliced

Then along came the technique of making lox, which refers to salmon cured in salt-sugar rub and brine. It was introduced during the early 1900s and primarily eaten by wealthy aristocrats.

The craft quickly spread to Scotland, followed by the United States. When lox arrived in New York, it was primarily kept within the Jewish community to be served at Sunday brunches. This didn’t last very long. Before we knew it, the classic schmear of cream cheese and lox on a bagel was born.

Traditionally, Lox was brined and cured in salt, but over the years some adaptations include smoking the fish after it was brined. That is the method I prefer as my recipes include the traditional gravlax, beet cured, coffee cured or our most recent, teriyaki smoked salmon.

The process of this salmon recipe takes roughly four days. Like most

Smoked salmon can be garnished with a variety of things. things in cooking, the better the quality of the beginning product the better the final result. To start, we typically select a side of fresh Scottish salmon.

• Run your fingers over of the skin side of the salmon fillets and feel for any bones. Pull out any bones with a pair of tweezers. Once all the bones have been removed, run your fingers over it one more time to double check that they have been removed.

• Combine your brine ingredients in a large deep pot and heat on medium to a gentle boil. Once boiling, simmer for 5 minutes and turn off. Cover and let cool to room temperature. Once at room temperature try to balance a boiled egg in the brine. If it sinks, slowly mix another ¼ cup of salt into the brine until it floats. Once the right salt level has been reached refrigerate to 40 degrees or less.

• Once the brine has come to temperature brine the salmon, cover and set in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours.

• Once brined, rinse the salmon with plenty of fresh, cold water to clear out any access salt.

• In a bowl, mix together the salt and brown sugar.

• In a glass baking dish slightly larger than the fillets, spread out 1/3 of the cure. Lay the salmon fillets on top of the cure making sure that the cure extends around ½ inch from each side of the salmon.

Spread the remaining cure on the top side of the salmon, making sure that the fillet is covered completely.

Although it’s the same species as the Atlantic salmon, we selected the Scottish salmon due to its high fat content.

We then brine the salmon filet whole in a salt, sugar and soy solution for one day. On the following day we remove the filet from the brine and let it air dry for one hour. Then, we cover the filet in salt, which is mixed with sugar and infused with soy and other spices.

The filet will cure in the refrigerator for the next two days. On the third day, we carefully remove the salmon filet from the salt and quickly rinse off any remaining salt. We then place the filet on a rack and pat dry any remaining water off with a clean towel. This part is perhaps one of the most crucial stages in this whole process. This skin later allows the smoke to easily adhere to the filet.

On the fourth day, we will place the salmon filet in a cold smoker. The filet will be cold smoked from anywhere between two to three hours with applewood chips. Once a beautifully golden skin is formed on the filet the fish is done!

• Cover the dish with plastic wrap and place in the coolest part of your refrigerator for 24 to 48 hours to cure. For best results place a weight around 1 to 1.5 lbs.) on top of your curing salmon; the longer, the better.

• After curing, gently rinse the salmon under cold running water.

In a large bowl filled with 3 inches of water, soak the fillets for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes drain it • Dry the fillets on both sides with a paper towel then arrange them skin side down uncovered on a wire rack to air dry. Pop in the refrigerator and let air dry for around 4 to 12 hours. The fillets should feel a little sticky at this point.

• Prepare your smoker for cold smoking.

• Place in the smoker and smoke until the salmon feels leathery, firm and has a nice bronze color. This should take a minimum of 10 to 12 hours.

• Before serving, wrap the salmon in butcher/baking paper and let rest in the refrigerator for a minimum of 4 hours. Ideally leave overnight.

• Diagonally cut thin (or thick depending on your preference) slices with a very sharp knife and garnish with lots of fresh dill, lemon slices, capers, red onion and crusty bread or crackers.

Red grouper and amberjack fired up offshore CAPTAIN DAVE WHITE

The winds here on the Island have been relentless this week.

It’s been tough to schedule anything offshore, but inshore we’ve been able to sneak a few in. We were able to get an offshore trip or two in before the blow as well.

Offshore, the red grouper and amberjack have been really fired up. We’ve been able to limit out in red grouper and catching amberjack in excesses of 100 lbs. Live sardines and pinfish are catching the amberjack, while dead sardines are catching the grouper.

We’re getting a blackfin tuna here and there as well.

Inshore, the sheepshead are moving in pretty well, as well as black drum and redfish.

We’re even getting a pompano here and there. We’re using primarily shrimp on our

inshore trips, as shiners are getting more difficult to obtain.

We hope this wind lays down and can be a bit more accommodating. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone.

Anglers fishing Little Sarasota Bay and Tampa Bay with me, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had good action with reds and snook recently. Spin fishing anglers had some action catching and releasing reds and snook in skinny water and around docks on CAL jigs with shad and grub tails. A fly angler fishing deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay with me scored with trout and bluefish on Clouser flies.

jigs with shad tails on a recent trip in Little Sarasota Bay with me. Jon Yenari and Kyle Ruffing, from Sarasota, had good action catching and releasing several snook and a couple of reds on CAL jigs with shad tails on a trip in Tampa Bay with me.

Fishing shallow flats for catch and release reds and snook should be a good option now. Fishing deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay is a good choice for action with a variety of species including trout, pompano, blues and Spanish mackerel.

Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by industrial, agricultural and residential runoff, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation. Please limit your kill; don’t kill your limit.

Celebrating 100 years

The Off Stage Ladies of the Island Players met Dec. 11 at the IMG Academy Golf Club in Bradenton to honor one of their own – founding member Dorothy Eder who was celebrating her 100th birthday. Dozens of people came out to the birthday celebration, which also served as the group’s December holiday meeting and party. Members of the Island Players board including President Sylvia Marnie, Laura Morales and Cathy Hansel-Edgerton, along with directors James Thaggard and Heiko Knipfelberg and Mike Lusk also were onhand to honor Eder and wish her a very happy birthday.

Off Stage Ladies President Patty Raaker led the group in singing “Happy Birthday” and also read aloud a poem that she wrote specially to honor Eder’s birthday. The group also presented Eder with a photo memory book illustrating her time with The Island Players and the Off Stage Ladies.

“This is beautiful,” Eder said of the gift. “I’m just so grateful for you all.”

Before cutting her birthday cake with the assistance of Marnie and Ruth, her best friend of 52 years, Eder related the story of how the Off Stage Ladies were founded, from a group of women who volunteered at the theater while their husbands worked

ANNA MARIA – The Island Players will perform “Ripcord,” by Pulitzer Prize winner David LindsayAbaire from Jan. 9 to 26.

When cranky Abby is forced to share her assisted living facility quarters with newly arrived Marilyn, she has no choice but to get rid of the infuriatingly chipper woman by any means necessary. A seemingly harmless bet between the two senior women quickly escalates into a dangerous game of one-upmanship that causes them to re-evaluate themselves.

The cast, is well-chosen for their roles – Cathy Hansel-Edgerton as Abby Binder, Laura Morales as Marilyn Dunne, Nick Catanzaro as Scotty, Jennifer Caldwell as Colleen, Rick Kopp as Derek and Matthew Mayo as Lewis/Benjamin. “Ripcord” is directed

by James Thaggard and assisted by stage manager Denise Handley.

12/15, driving with a suspended license, 5800 Marina Drive. The license plate reader informed the officer of a driver who had a suspended license, and the officer stopped him. The driver said he remembered getting some tickets and ignoring them, but he did not know his license was suspended.

12/17, petit theft, Dollar Tree, 3250 East Bay Drive. A store employee said he saw the suspect put item in his pants and walk out of the store. The clerk tried to get his attention, but the suspect ignored him. The clerk followed the suspect and saw him throw the item he took in the bushes, where the clerk retrieved it. When questioned, he denied stealing, but he said he was hungry. He was arrested.

HOLMES BEACH – Two men were arrested last week after skipping out on the $106 bar tab they racked up at the Ugly Grouper on Tuesday, Dec. 17, according to the Holmes Beach Police Department.

Patrick Vincent Thurman and Michael Ryel were each arrested on a charge of Thurman petit theft. According to Florida statutes, petit theft is a first-degree misdemeanor and pertains to property stolen that is valued at more than $100 and less than $750.

The police report listed Thurman and Ryel’s last known addresses as homeless, but noted Thurman lived on a boat in Longboat Key. According to the report, the pair consumed several shots of Jim Beam Fire, beers and an order of smoked wings.

In his report, Officer Jason Higgins wrote, “I was dispatched to the Ugly Grouper restaurant for a dineand-dash. Dispatch advised there are two suspects, and they left the business on foot traveling southbound. Ryel Before I went on scene, I canvassed the area and found Patrick Vincent Thurman sitting at a bus stop at 5364 Holmes Blvd. When I summoned him to me, he immediately said, ‘I know.’”

According to the report, Thurman told Higgins he went to the Ugly Grouper with Ryel and Ryel bought him some shots and beers.

“Thurman said they both walked out and that he didn’t know his friend’s card was bad.

Thurman said he knew the bill was not paid for. Thurman said, ‘I don’t think I’m guilty of anything, because I was invited there. I don’t feel responsible for my portion of the tab,’” according to the police report.

Homeownership matters

oday is Christmas Day, and I’m not sure how many will take the time to read this column, so instead of giving you what I hope is my usual well thought out advice and real estate statistics, I just wanted to talk a little about the real meaning of owning a home.

In today’s world where so many families are not intact and people are living alone, it’s important to remember how important homeownership is in our lives. During my generation, almost every family I knew owned their own home. It was a proud and important thing to achieve for my parents and their friends and family during the postWorld War II generation. It held our lives together, you celebrated holidays, birthdays, births and reconciled death all in the family home.

And, of course, there are very practical and financial reasons

Owning a home goes back to our founding fathers who linked property ownership to security and happiness and endures today as the cornerstone of the American Dream. A home provides emotional and financial stability and historically, with a few exceptions, is the most dependable way for middle class Americans to achieve wealth through their home’s equity.

In spite of a couple of blips on the homeownership radar, the housing market is the driving force of the economy, benefiting the financial

health of the country with goods and services that depend on the housing market. The Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates that housing accounts for approximately 12.3% of our gross domestic product and continues to provide and create strong stable communities.

Millennial buyers should remember this as they consider a home for their future. Getting into your first home is more important than whether or not your first home checks off all your boxes. Previous generations didn’t think too much about the color of the walls or if the kitchen countertops were quartz or granite; they focused on location and growth and less on perfection.

Also, in this time of good cheer and love for all, keep the falling in love to people, not a house. It’s dangerous to be influenced by bling and overlook the bones of a prop-

erty. And don’t forget holidays can be a great time to buy; the competition is less since lots of buyers are taking a holiday pause.

I’ll leave you with this poem celebrating a new home I first remember hearing in the iconic holiday movie, “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Good wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season.

Staley and her husband moved to Sarasota in 2014 after spending more than 34 years in Virginia. Staley, a former elementary school art teacher, spent 10 years in St. Croix, where she enjoyed the flora and fauna and tropical climate.

She took up watercolor and acrylic painting nearly 15 years ago. Each spring, Staley travels to Europe with a watercolor group to plein air paint and explore. Countries where she has

The Center Champions:

Blalock Walters and Gulfview win it all

Last week saw the close of both the adult basketball season and the co-ed adult soccer season at The Center with two championship games.

After a night of semifinal games, Thursday night on the pitch was built up to be the game of the season, with talent and skill on both sides of the field.

Blalock Walters set the tone of the game in the first half with the first goal by Matt Plummer.

With eight recorded saves in the night, Vintage Beach’s keeper Jason Sato made a beautiful save 10 minutes into the game, sparking excitement in the young team.

The Vintage Beach energy would soon be squashed with a second Block goal by Luis Picardo at the 14th minute with the assist by Brooke Capparelli, making the score 2-0.

The Blalock defense smartly prevented shooting opportunities for the league’s high scorer, Joseph Hutchinson. Luke Grady, Block’s goalkeeper, made the stop of Hutchinson’s first shot, foreshadowing for the rest of the match up.

With two minutes left on the scoreboard, Vintage Beach made a run down the field with Cole Peterson dribbling the soccer ball into Blalock territory before passing to Hutchinson, who claimed SEE SPORTS, PAGE 27

Christmas on the Boardwalk A few raindrops did not dampen the holiday spirits of those who attended the inaugural Christmas on the Boardwalk and Ugly Sweater Contest on Saturday, Dec. 21, at AMI Plaza in Holmes Beach. by Live Naturally, 421 Sweet Treats Café and Bakery, Vinny’s Italian Kitchen and the Freckled Fin Irish Pub. team’s one and only goal in the game, moving the score to 2-1.

Robert Fellowes made a beautiful ground shot that Sato just could not get to with 90 seconds left in the half.

Holding a two-point lead, the Blalock defense continued to stop Hutchinson and the Vintage offense despite beautiful shots.

Vintage Beach nearly put another point on the board before the end of the half with an amazing near midfield free kick by Zach Reda. Reda’s shot went off the corner of the cross bar, preserving Blalock’s lead going into the second half of the final game of the season.

To start the second half, Blalock Walters’ Fellowes game out shooting, but Sato’s keeper abilities were just too good, stopping the hard shot.

In another Capparelli-Picardo combination run, Picardo shot his team’s fourth goal.

Out of the box, Sato made a smart stop with his knee high, kicking the ball down field, preventing a Capparelli shot.

Trying to put something to-

gether with a little more than eight minutes left in the game, Jenna Steininger got the soccer ball to the feet of Hutchinson. Hutchinson’s hard shot sailed over the goal.

Vintage Beach maintained a Never Say Die mentality on the field until the last whistle. Cody Wright, near the corner on the Blalock side of the field, passed to Clancy Vaughn, who had good position in front of the net. Holding on to the ball just a little too long, the Blalock defense moved in preventing the shot.

After many team shooting opportunities and shots that were just a little off, Hutchinson’s next shot was just a little poke toward the goal, making an easy stop by Grady.

The combination of an off night for Hutchinson and a prevent defense by Blalock, the Vintage Beach team just could not find the net, including Reda who had a number of strong strikes.

In the end, the Blalock Walters team was the victor and claimed the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup for The Center’s 2019 fall season.

In last Wednesday night’s adult

basketball action, Gulfview Windows handily defeated the Ugly Grouper squad 59-44 to win the adult basketball championship game at The Center. Gulfview’s JB Shuck was the high scorer of the night with 20 points in the game.

Teammate Jordan DeMers was a close second with 19 points.

Dominick Otteni, for Ugly Grouper, was the top scorer for his team with 15 points.
