Ugly Grouper worker carried hepatitis A

HOLMES BEACH - The Manatee County Health Department (CHD) has identified a case of hepatitis A in a food service worker in Holmes Beach.

Following laboratory confirmation on July 1, the department immediately began conducting an epidemiological investigation and determined that the individual worked at The Ugly Grouper restaurant, 5704 Marina Drive, while infectious.

Concerns raised over horse waste in bay

PALMA SOLA BAY – With red tide fresh in local memory and blue-green algae hanging around since May, everything that produces nutrients that feed harmful algae blooms is under the microscope.

That includes the horse waste floating in Palma Sola Bay. The Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council asked the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the

Pinellas County Commission in June to ban recreational horseback riding in Tampa Bay along the Sunshine Skyway Bridge causeway to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus from animal waste and to protect seagrass.

Some of the same horses that are rented at the Skyway also carry tourists up and down beaches on the Palma Sola Bay causeway and swim in the bay.

Florida flotsam washes up on European beaches

Cindy Lane Visitors to this resort island say it all the time when meeting folks from far-flung hometowns – “Small world!”

How small is it?

A blue plastic cup from the Anna Maria Island Beach Café in Coquina Beach washed up 3,350 miles away in Sao Miguel, an island in the Azores. The cup was discovered in December 2018 by a man named Elio.

Not to be outdone, a red plastic cup from the Anna Maria Island Beach Café was discovered washed up 4,199 miles away in Cascais, Portugal, in February 2019 by Miguel Lacerda.

A cup of an unknown color from the Anna Maria Island Beach Café went farther still, washing up 4,250 miles away in Cornwall, England, where it was discovered in June 2019.

And the winner – a green plastic cup from the Anna Maria Island Beach Café washed

up 4,299 miles away on a beach in Brest, France, discovered in March 2019 by Gilbert Mellaza.

Four cups, four destinations, seven months, 16,098 miles.

The Florida flotsam has European beachcombers hypothesizing all over social media.

The plastic tumblers could have tumbled off a cruise ship. They could be victims of Hurricane Irma. They could have been left on the beach and grabbed by a high tide.

They could have been bought as souvenirs

by European tourists who dropped them back home on European beaches.

The buzz, an inadvertent European advertising campaign for the restaurant, has made it back to the café managers on email and social media.

Miguel Lacerda posted a video on Facebook, tracking the red cup he found in Portugal back to the Anna Maria Island restaurant “to encourage them to respect the environment.”

Manager Maria Steffens said that the café does respect the environment and doesn’t even allow straws in drinks to protect wildlife.

You may not be familiar with Dr. Curt Ebbesmeyer, formerly a Mobil Oil oceanographer, but you probably know the term he coined – The Great Pacific Garbage Patch – defining the plastic and other trash floating in the Pacific Ocean.

Dr. Ebbesmeyer tracks flotsam in ocean currents, and became famous for documenting sightings of rubber duckies and other toys that spilled into the Pacific Ocean in 1992, and for tracking a 1990 container spill of thousands of Nike sneakers into the Pacific that washed up a year later on North America’s west coast.

“We rarely get flotsam reported in Europe from the Gulf of Mexico,” he told The Sun. “We had a duck decoy and a channel marker, but this will go in the newsletter (beachcombersalert.org).”

He estimates it took about a year for the cups to get from Florida to their destinations.

But did they really come from Florida?

First hatchlings of season disoriented on Fourth

County eyes tropical system At 8:30 a.m. Monday morning, the National Weather Service issued a tropical outlook briefing for the Tampa Bay area regarding tropical weather system potentially moving toward Florida’s Gulf coast.

“The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor a system over central Georgia that is forecast to move into the northeast Gulf of Mexico in a couple of days. A tropical depression is likely to form near the northern Gulf coast by the end of the week,” the written briefing said.

The update included no watches, warnings or advisories, but said, “heavy rainfall is possible this week, especially along the coast.”

Nominate a Business of the Year The Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the 2020 Small Business of the Year Awards. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 30.

These awards will be presented at the Membership Gala on Friday, Nov. 15. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 30.

A total of four small businesses of the year are honored with the awards. It includes a small, medium and large business based on the number of employees. The fourth award is for the non-profit or not-for profit business of the year.

BB Commission preview Due to the Fourth of July holiday, last week’s Bradenton Beach City Commission meeting was rescheduled for Thursday, July 11, at 6 p.m. The city attorney will present draft resolution 19-909, which pertains to four charter amendments the Keep Our Residential Neighborhoods political action committee wants placed on the 2019 city ballot. The commission will also discuss a parking agreement that would grant the Anna Maria Oyster Bar (the city’s pier tenant) after hours parking privileges in the city hall parking lot.

HOLMES BEACH – Sea turtle hatchlings, whose dash to freedom on Independence Day was spoiled by lights, got a police escort to the Gulf of Mexico.

The loggerhead turtles – the first nest to hatch this season on Anna Maria Island – were disoriented by lights on the first floor of the Anna Maria Beach Resort, 6306 Gulf Drive, and further hampered by fireworks and fireworks debris, tents on the beach, holes dug in the sand and beach litter, according to the Holmes Beach Police Department report.

A group of people gathered on the beach for fireworks flagged down Officer Alex Hurt, patrolling the beach in a police four-wheeler, and told him about the hatchlings, which were “going in every direction other than towards the water,” according to the report.

“The baby turtles were along the building, some falling in the landscaping planters,” according to Officer Adam DeSantis’ report.

“I located one baby turtle that had fallen off the edge of the sidewalk, in the landscaping, flipped on its back unable to flip back over,” he wrote. “I gathered up approximately 10 baby turtles from the Anna Maria Beach Resort property. The baby turtles were transported safely to the water’s edge, where they were released.

Other hatchlings trapped in the sea oats between the beach and the resort also were rescued and released, bringing the total saved to about 40, according to the report.

The city’s code compliance department has given the resort a directive to fix the lighting and appear before a special magistrate, Police Chief Bill Tokajer said, adding that the resort lighting will be checked nightly for compliance.

Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring Director Suzi Fox also contacted the resort about replacing its adjustable outdoor lighting system, which is out of compliance with the local turtle lighting ordinance.

The adjustable feature leads to lights being turned on during turtle season – May 1 to Oct. 31 – either intentionally or because people forget to change the settings, she said, adding that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission does not approve adjustable lighting for beachfront applications.

Disorientations are historically common in the area, Fox said.

“The police did a fine job photographing and helping pick up hatchlings,” she said, suggesting that hatchlings should be released in the water where it’s dark, “or they may come right back up out of the water.”

Tokajer estimates that 10,000 people were on the beach as late as 11 p.m. on the Fourth of July.

Renowned artist takes turtle walk Pittsburgh artist James Simon accompanied Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring volunteers on their morning turtle walk on Bradenton Beach on July 1. Simon was in town for a “meet the artist” session celebrating his new mosaic mural, “The Magic River,” installed in June on the north wall of the City Centre Garage just south of Bradenton City Hall. The 120-foot-long mural celebrates the Manatee River. “It was a great thrill and honor to experience the turtle walk, and learn about the wonderful turtle patrol program for protecting and documenting the turtles,” he said. “I love turtles. My work has always embraced nature and the conservation of wildlife and their habitat.”

Lighting up the Cortez sky An anonymous tip about improperly stored fireworks produced a legal fireworks display in Cortez.

CORTEZ – The Swordfish Grill ownership and staff successfully navigated the permitting process needed to host a legally-permitted fireworks display on Friday, July 5.

Friday’s permitted display replaced the non-permitted July 4 fireworks show that’s become a Cortez tradition in recent years.

The nearly hour-long fireworks show launched from three offshore barges and was also visible to spectators in Bradenton Beach and along the Palma Sola Causeway.

Bradenton Beach resident Steve Schewe and his wife Nancy were among the hundreds of people gathered on the Swordfish Grill’s waterfront patio.

“Last night’s seemingly never-ending fireworks show was spectacular. Other

local fireworks shows will have a difficult time measuring up to this one.

Hats off to Bob Slicker and the Swordfish crew,” Schewe said.

Bradenton Beach Vice Mayor Jake Spooner viewed the display from atop his new retail/restaurant building that’s under construction on Bridge Street.

“That was the best show I’ve ever seen around here. The whole show was a grand finale,” Spooner said.

After the show, General Manager Bob Slicker brought the Cortez Fireworks Team on stage and thanked them and the restaurant staff for their efforts.

He also thanked local attorney Eddie Mulock for his legal assistance.

PERMITTING EFFORTS

Swordfish Grill owner John Banyas obtained a public fireworks display permit from Manatee County on Tuesday, July 2, and a second permit from West Manatee Fire Rescue (WMFR) the following day.

Banyas obtained the fireworks permits in response to a June 12 investigation that began with WMFR Fire Inspector Rodney Kwiatkowski responding to two anonymous tips about

duced ourselves and asked if we could go in and see what we’re looking at,” Kwiatkowski said on Wednesday, July.

The response team included Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies and members of the county bomb squad.

“There’s no citation. The only issue we had was with the storage being so close to all the residences. The storage was in violation of a county ordinance.

They were asked to move them. They obliged. They were very cooperative,” Kwiatkowski said.

“We also let them know we were available to facilitate the permitting process. We met with John Banyas, showed him what was required for a permitted fireworks display and pointed him in the direction of some licensed pyrotechnic companies,” Kwiatkowski said.

Manatee County officials helped facilitate the permitting process.

“This is the way it’s supposed to work, and everybody wins in the end,” Kwiatkowski said.

The kindness of strangers Patriotism is alive and well on Anna Maria Island.

We wanted to thank the good Samaritan and the Bradenton Beach police officer who came to our rescue during the Fourth of July parade. My husband and I were driving our '74 Corvette Stingray in the parade, as we have done every year for as long as we can remember. About 1.5 miles into the parade, our car decided it was hot and tired, and we were stuck. Thanks to the kindness of these folks who helped us pop it back into gear, stopped traffic and turned the car around, we were able to get back home safely and the parade could continue.

The Manatee County Health Department advises anyone who patronized The Ugly Grouper prior to June 22 and had not previously been vaccinated for hepatitis A to consider being vaccinated at the Manatee County Health Department or primary care physician’s office. You will receive the first dose of the vaccine, with a second dose being

The health department offers free vaccines at the main office, 410 Sixth Ave. E. in Bradenton Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

The hepatitis A vaccine may provide protection against the disease if given within two weeks after exposure. Patrons should monitor for symptoms of hepatitis A infection, which include sudden onset of abdominal discomfort, dark urine, fever, diarrhea, pale white stools and yellow skin and eyes (jaundice).

Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention promptly.

A hotline has been set up for people who have questions about hepatitis A at 941-708-5951.

People who should be vaccinated include: • All children at age one year; • People who are homeless; • Users of recreational drugs, whether injected or not; • Men who have sexual encounters with other men; • People with direct contact with others who have hepatitis A; • Travelers to countries where hepatitis A is common; • People with chronic or longterm liver disease, including hepatitis B or hepatitis C; • People with clotting-factor disorders • Family and caregivers of adoptees from countries where hepatitis A is common.

ing good hand hygiene plays an important role in preventing the spread of hepatitis A, according to the health department.

Wash hands after using the bathroom — alcohol-based hand sanitizers do not kill the hepatitis A virus. Use soap and running water and wash for at least 20 seconds, wash hands after changing a diaper or caring for a person, and wash hands before preparing, serving or eating food.

No medicines can cure the disease once symptoms appear.

People with hepatitis A symptoms should seek medical care immediately.

Most people get better over time but may need to be hospitalized.

Previous infection with hepatitis A provides immunity for the rest of a person’s life.

People who are exposed to hepatitis A may be given vaccine or immune globulin within 14 days of exposure to prevent infection.

After a case of hepatitis A has been reported to the health department by a health care provider, a county health department epidemiologist will interview the individual and collect information regarding the timeline of their past 50 days, including travel, occupation, food history and more. The epidemiologist will then identify all close contacts of the ill person who should receive the hepatitis A vaccine to prevent any possible spread of the illness.

The majority of cases are close contacts of persons who are experiencing homelessness or persons who use injected or noninjected drugs.

ANNA MARIA – The Sandbar restaurant in Anna Maria hosted fireworks shows on back-to-back nights while celebrating Independence Day and the extended holiday weekend.

The Sandbar and the Chiles Group have provided Fourth of July fireworks for more than 30 years. After an abbreviated Thursday, July 4, fireworks display that lasted less than five minutes, owner Ed Chiles decided to host a second fireworks show the following night.

“We know that our fireworks show disappointed many last night. It disappointed us as well. Tonight, we will make it right with what will hopefully be our best fireworks show ever,” said the Sandbar’s Friday, July 5, press release.

The BBC reported last month that Nike sneakers (again) from the spill were being found in the Azores, England and France.

The Virginian-Pilot reported in April that among the lost containers of the Maersk Shanghai were flip-flops with "Outer Banks NC" stamped on them that are washing ashore in England, France and Ireland, apparently the same route as AMI’s plastic cups took, which means that Europeans might be getting more of the free souvenirs any day now.

The good news is that if they bring them to either café on Anna Maria Island, they will get a drink discount.

The better news is that people like Ebbesmeyer are keeping an eye on plastics in the sea.

“It’s up to us to save the ocean,” Ebbesmeyer said.

Blue-green algae warning signs coming

BRADENTON – The Florida Department of Health plans to post caution signs at the boat ramp on the Braden River at State Road 64 warning people, “Blue-green algae may be in these waters. There may be toxins.”

While toxins were not detected in water samples taken in the area by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection on Tuesday, July 2, the signs are necessary “to help educate folks utilizing the county facilities of the current algae bloom and steps they can take to assure they are not impacted from this event,” Tom Larkin, environmental manager for the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County, wrote Charlie Hunsicker, head of the Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department in an email Friday.

The signs advise people to avoid swimming and eating shellfish from the area, to keep water out of their eyes, nose and mouth and to keep pets away from the water, Hunsicker said, noting the irony that the tests show no toxins.

FISH STRESSED

Fish were gasping for air in the mouth of the Manatee River Friday like koi in a pond, but not because of blue-green algae, he said, attributing the behavior to low dissolved oxygen in the water caused by high water temperatures and sunlight.

The county took six water samples around Robinson and Perico preserves for testing but the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute will not have results for at least a week, he said.

“In general, it looks like fish were stressed and dying within the preserves and more severely in upper reaches like the boat ramp and tidal nodes, near the fishing

and sometimes fatal to fish. But it should not deter anyone from enjoying Robinson Preserve or any preserve because toxins have not been detected.”

“We are dealing with causes that are stressful and sometimes fatal to fish,” Hunsicker said. “But it should not deter anyone from enjoying Robinson Preserve or any preserve because toxins have not been detected.”

Swimming and wade fishing are not allowed in county preserves, Hunsicker reminds visitors.

Three of nine samples taken statewide the first week of July showed non-toxic algae blooms, according to the Friday, July 5, Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) report, including the July 2 sample in the Braden River and another showing mixed algae in Perico Bayou.

“The Manatee River conditions have improved with no new reports. DEP staff report that conditions look much better except in the Bradenton area,” according to the report.

No samples were taken in waters off Anna Maria Island this week. DEP’s jurisdiction is primarily freshwater, Hunsicker said, so the agency is concentrating on local rivers.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has jurisdiction over saltwater, he said. Red tide was not present in water samples taken in Manatee County last week by the FWC, according to its Friday, July 5 report.

Blue-green algae called Filamentous cyanobacteria (Lyngbya-like) was first detected on May 9 in Anna Maria Sound at Key Royale, in the Intracoastal Waterway south of Grassy Point and in Palma Sola Bay near San Remo Shores.

waters are not the same species that has plagued Lake Okeechobee, the toxic Microcystis aeruginosa, according to DEP. Blue-green algae can be blue, green, brown or red and emit a foul, rotten egg odor caused by the production of hydrogen sulfide gas, according to DEP, which advises staying out of water where algae are visible as specks, mats or water is discolored pea-green, blue-green or brownishred. Additionally, pets or livestock should not come into contact with the algal bloomimpacted water, or the algal bloom material or fish on the shoreline.

Even non-toxic blooms can harm the environment by depleting oxygen levels in the water column and reducing the amount of light that reaches submerged plants, according to DEP. The growth of blue-green algae typically increases in the spring and summer months when water temperatures and daylight hours increase.

To help keep algae growth at bay, Florida law bans the use of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers during the rainy season, June 1 through Sept. 30.

BRADENTON – Former Planning and Zoning Board member and Sunshine Law lawsuit defendant John Metz has been deposed, but his computer may be subjected to a forensics examination.

Representing the city of Bradenton Beach and co-plaintiff Jack Clarke in the lawsuit filed in August 2017, attorney Robert Watrous deposed Metz under oath on Tuesday, July 2. Paralegal Michael Barfield assisted Watrous.

The lawsuit alleges Metz and former Planning and Zoning Board members Reed Mapes, Patty Shay and Bill Vincent, and former Scenic WAVES Committee members Tjet Martin and Rose Vincent, violated the Florida Sunshine Law. The allegations pertain to discussions and email exchanges the city advisory board members had while also serving as members of the Concerned Neighbors of Bradenton Beach (CNOBB) group. Some of those discussions and email exchanges pertained to parking garages, Community Redevelopment Agency projects and other city business that had or could foreseeably come before the advisory board members in their official capacities.

Last month, Judge Edward Nicholas ruled that a parking garage would absolutely come before the Planning and Zoning Board. The one-week trial begins Monday, July 15.

Watrous produced a copy of the oath of office Metz signed in 2014 when appointed to the planning board. When signing that document, Metz swore to uphold the United States Constitution and the Florida Constitution.

Watrous also produced copies of documents Metz signed in 2014 and 2017 acknowledging his participation in mandatory Sunshine Law training and his promise to comply with city resolution 09-757.

The resolution serves as city’s written and electronic communication policy. It references the Florida Public Records Law and states all correspondence pertaining to official city business is public record and shall be produced upon request.

Metz said he used the time sequences to refresh his memory of what he said that day.

“Why did you not provide that email through discovery request? We did not receive it,” Watrous said.

Metz said he didn’t remember the records request or when Mapes sent that email.

Watrous asked Metz if he attended an informal meeting shortly after the lawsuit was filed at which the defendants discussed their response strategies to case-related records requests.

“I don’t recall any discussion about withholding, destroying or not turning over any documents,” Metz said.

On Aug. 8, 2017, Martin sent an email to Metz, Mapes, Shay and Bill Vincent that included the header “Barfield.”

“I was advised not to give him anything, not a single thing,” Martin wrote.

Earlier that day, Barfield sent Martin his initial records request.

CNOBB webmaster Michael Harrington’s January deposition revealed Mapes asked Harrington to delete emails that referenced a parking garage. Harrington produced those emails, Mapes did not.

“I would request that nothing be deleted from that computer because we may seek an emergency motion to do a forensic (investigation) on that computer,” Watrous said of Metz’s computer.

On Monday, Barfield said Watrous would seek a court order to inspect Metz’s computer.

Watrous referenced a June 12, 2017, email Mapes sent to Bill Vincent about Metz joining CNOBB. “I spoke to John. He is concerned about sunshine issue,” Mapes wrote.

“I was pointing out that we have to be aware of the Sunshine Law; I wasn’t saying I was concerned about it,” Metz told Watrous.

Metz said he did not recall attending a CNOBB meeting that included discussion about Bill Vincent’s July 19, 2017 inquiry to the Florida Commission on Ethics regarding city advisory board members participating in CNOBB meetings.

The audio recording of the Aug. 3, 2017, CNOBB meeting confirms Metz was present when Martin read aloud the Ethics Commission response that stated it does not have jurisdiction over Sunshine Law

compliance. That response recommended Vincent visit the Attorney General’s website or consult with private counsel.

Metz said he was not aware of anyone from CNOBB contacting private counsel regarding the Ethics Commission response.

CONSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGE

In 2017, Metz’s attorney, Thomas Shults, filed an affirmative defense questioning the constitutionality of the Sunshine Law. “Do you believe the Florida Sunshine Law is unconstitutional?” Watrous asked Metz.

“Yes,” Metz replied. “I think it’s extremely vague. I believe it chills free speech and association and the right to assemble and petition.”

Metz expressed his belief that his “direct democracy” rights regarding petition initiatives allowed him to participate in the CNOBB discussions about potential petition initia-

Watrous asked Metz if these disputes have decreased his quality of life in Bradenton Beach.

“This litigation certainly has decreased my enjoyment – financially, reputation-wise, etc.

– more than any of these other disputes,” Metz said.

Metz said he anticipates living in Bradenton Beach for the rest of his life.

Hentzen crowned hot dog eating king This year’s contest set new records for the number of hot dogs eaten and the number of contestants eating them.

CORTEZ – Casey “Where’s My Food Belly?” Hentzen set a new event record during the Swordfish Grill’s sixth annual Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Hentzen bested 11 other amateur competitive eaters when he scarfed down 11 ¾ hotdogs in 10 minutes.

The 12-contestant field also set a new event record.

For his efforts, Hentzen won $100 cash and his choice of Swordfish Grill swag. Mostly importantly, his name joins the previous champions on the coveted Hahana Ilio Cup trophy – Hahana Ilio is Hawaiian for hot dog.

After hoisting the trophy, Hentzen said, “That’s pretty slick; I like it a lot.”

He was then asked how it felt to win and how he felt after eating so many hot dogs.

“Awesome. I feel great, but I’m full.

That was a lot of hot dogs, and I don’t have a desire for any more,” he said.

As they did last year, Brian Slicker and Jarred Kelly joined arms as the contest came to an end.

Eating 10 ¼ hot dogs, defending champion and two-time winner Jarred “The

Belly” Kelly finished second and earned a $50 Swordfish Grill gift certificate.

Patrick “Don Quixote” Meehan, a former pancake eating champion, ate 10 hot dogs and finished third, earning a $25 gift certificate.

Brian “The Bottomless Pit” Slicker ate six hot dogs. In the process, he captured point of view video through the GoPro camera he wore on his head. He plans to post the footage at the family’s “Real Slick Kids” YouTube channel.

The lone female competitor, Brooke “The Wiener Destroyer” Capparelli, ate 5 ¼ hot dogs.

The youngest contestant, 14-year-old Jack “The Ripper” Thomas, downed 5 ½ hot dogs.

After the contest, master of ceremonies Bob Slicker told the competitors they were more than welcome to eat another hot dog if they wished – an offer that had no takers.

In other hot dog eating news, defending champion Joey Chestnut claimed his 12th title that day when he ate 71 hot dogs in 10 minutes during the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island.

On the female side of that contest, Miki Sudo claimed her sixth Mustard Belt after eating 31 Nathan’s hot dogs.

Hentzen said he didn’t engage in any special preparations for the eating contest, other than his normal daily exercise routine.

The first-time participant previously competed in a Chick-fil-A chicken nugget eating contest. He learned of the hot dog eating contest via the Swordfish Grill’s Facebook page. The Wimauma resident then decided it was worth the 30-mile drive to Cortez.

Antique car almost missed the parade The Ford Model T was almost absent after running over a screw

HOLMES BEACH – It was 1919. The world was recovering from its first world war and planting the seeds for a second. In Pittsburgh, radio station KDKA was the first to receive a limited commercial license to broadcast. In Detroit, a Ford Model T was assembled and sold – the same one that drove in the Anna Maria Privateers’ Fourth of July Parade.

For owners Sissy and Tom Quinn the, classic four door convertible almost didn’t make it.

While traveling toward Coquina Beach and the parade staging area, there was a loud boom and the passenger side front tire’s tube started making flapping sounds.

They pulled into Duffy’s Tavern’s parking lot and stopped. A motorist behind them, David Cassese, also stopped to see if he could help. He moved on after he surmised they were OK.

The Quinns weighed the possibility of changing the tire. The spare was in good shape and full of air, thanks to Tom’s maintenance, but it was time consuming "I've never changed a tire with the jack, " he said.

and although the Quinns had the original jack and tools to do it, they were unsure of how long it would take.

They called Sissy’s twin brother, Vinny Giorgio, and his wife, Dottie, who joined them.

They were approached

by Holmes Beach Public Works employees offering help, but Tom Quinn and his brother-in-law got out the jack and started to separate the wheel from the car. The sun was out, but heat wasn’t a factor since it was still morning.

The two men applied themselves and soon the new tire was on. Tom started up the

12.1-horsepower fourcylinder engine and moved the car under the shade of the car wash structure next door to wait for the parade.

Tom and Sissy said they wanted to thank all those who offered help to get the centurion sedan going. Sissy Quinn believes in preserving history, as she is director of the Anna Maia Historic Preservation Trust, a group that is trying to preserve some of the Island's historic buildings.

THE MODEL T GOES ISLAND

The Quinns got the car in 2001. It is mostly

original and any upgrades, such as Rocky Mountain brakes for better stopping power and an electric starter, are factory approved.

Tom Quinn said the car could hit 35 mph although it’s happier at 25 mph, about the top speed of the golf carts that use the streets of Anna Maria Island.

It is likely the old Model T would probably not get as many impatient drivers honking their horns like they sometimes do at the golf carts. They would more likely get a short beep and a friendly wave as drove this piece of history down the street.

So much so, that on a now somewhat distant milestone birthday, most of my friends each gave me a bottle of gin. Those really are the best birthdays!

Like many products containing alcohol, gin has somewhat of an infamous past. Originating in the Middle Ages, it was first considered herbal medicine due to the inclusion of juniper berry and other herbal and aromatic ingredients.

Gin drinking became extremely popular in the United Kingdom in the late 1600s when more than half of all drinking establishments in London were gin shops. This was due in part to unregulated distillation of gin and significant duties on imported spirits, particularly French brandy due to political and religious conflicts between Britain and France. Unfortunately, the result was an epidemic of extreme drunkenness known as the Gin Craze.

In the mid 1700s, the British Parliament passed five major acts to control the consumption of gin. Gin drinking remains significantly more popular in the United Kingdom than in the United States. In 2018, gin sales in the UK were $54.40 US per person compared to $8.60 US per per-son in the US. There are several legal categories of gin, but all are based on the requirement that they possess the char-

I was pleased to find an old favorite of mine on the list, a French 75. It’s a simple recipe of gin, Champagne, lemon juice and sugar. Try having just one.

They are simply delicious. Somewhat ironically, the cocktail wasn’t created in the UK, but rather in New York in the early 1900s.

Besides drinking gin while cooking, you can also use gin in food recipes.

Gravlax is a cured salmon using a combination of dill, lemon and alcohol (preferably gin). Curing fish dates back to the prerefrigeration era and is simply a method to draw out moisture and preserve the fish.

Once you get the hang of the curing process, feel free to experiment with different types of fish and curing components. Select fish with a fairly high fat content so your end product isn’t too dry. After all, cured fish lose about 15 percent of their raw state.

Curing components should be those that infuse a range of flavors that appeal to you. Grapefruit zest and crushed green peppercorns come to mind as an interesting profile. Gravlax is easy to prepare, but it does take about three days to fully cure, so you have to plan ahead.

Salmon Gravlax with gin Ingredients

2 - 2 lb. sides of salmon, skin on, all bones removed 12 oz. coarse sea salt 3 oz. light brown sugar 5 oz. granulated sugar 1 Tbs. dill seed 1 Tbs. coriander 1 Tbs. cracked black pepper Zest of two limes 4 oz. gin 4 Tbs. fresh dill, roughly chopped including stalks

Directions

Run your fingers over the top of the salmon filets, removing any bones you find. In a large bowl, mix together the salt and sugars. Crush the dill, coriander and black pepper in a pestle and mortar and add to the salt mixture.

Stir in the lime zest, gin and fresh dill until well combined.

Lay out a large enough piece

of plastic film to cover both pieces of fish. Spread a small amount of the mixture on the film and then lay the fish on top, skin side down. Pour the rest of the mixture evenly over the surface of each filet.

Using the plastic wrap, bring the two pieces of salmon together with the skin on the outside. Wrap completely and then place in a large sealable freezer bag. Place in a shallow pan, add a weight on top like a heavy cast pan and refrigerate for thre days, turning the bag every 6-8 hours.

To serve, unwrap the salmon, scrape off any excess salt mixture. Slice the salmon filets very thinly on a diagonal.

Serve with lemon wedges, fresh heavy bread and cream cheese.

Hundreds lined Gulf, Marina and East Bay drives July 4 for the annual Anna Maria Island Privateers’ Fourth of July parade. Beginning at Coquina Beach, the parade traversed the Island, ending on Pine Avenue near the Anna Maria City Pier construction site. Taking part in the colorful, patriotic parade were pirate crewes, veterans, a Jeep club, local residents, visitors helping Islanders celebrate the holiday, local businesses and some of the Island’s elected officials. Once the parade concluded, parade participants and viewers alike joined together at City Pier Park to enjoy hot dogs, chips and community fellowship at the annual Anna Maria Celebrate America community picnic.

Waterkeeper Alliances holding polluters accountable

T

he Waterkeeper Alliance is the largest and fastest growing nonprofit that is exclusively focused on clean water. The Alliance works to preserve and protect water by uniting local Waterkeeper organizations and affiliates worldwide. Their goal is to assure drinkable, fishable and swimmable water for everyone.

The organization was created by a band of commercial fishermen on New York’s Hudson River in 1966 to hold industrial polluters accountable for destroying their way of life.

Their brand of hard-hitting, grassroots activism sparked a miraculous recovery of the river and inspired others to launch Waterkeeper groups around the world. There are now more than 300 Waterkeeper organizations and affiliates on the frontlines of the global water crisis. With their volunteers they are guarding and defending more than 2.5 million square miles of rivers, lakes and coastal waterways on six continents.

Today Florida’s Gulf coast is one of those critically endangered frontlines faced with devastating red tide events and blue green algae outbreaks, sewage spills and willful discharges into impaired waters that are feeding unprecedented amount of nitrogen and other pollutants into local waters. Our area is fortunate to be under the auspices of Suncoast Waterkeeper. Suncoast Waterkeeper focuses its efforts in an area that includes the coastal waters of Manatee and Sarasota counties, a watershed that includes all of the Sarasota Bay Estuary and the southern reaches of Tampa Bay (lower Tampa Bay and Terra Ceia Bay,) and the Manatee River.

Suncoast Waterkeeper’s former Executive Director and Founder Justin Bloom is an environmental lawyer who believes in the organization’s mission statement, "To protect and restore the Florida Suncoast’s waterways through enforcement, fieldwork, advocacy, and environmental education for the benefit of the communities that rely upon these precious

According to Bloom, they are more aggressive than other groups in that they are likely to litigate against those corporations, organizations and individuals that threaten water quality. Waterkeepers in general and Suncoast Waterkeepers in particular are small but streamlined and able to act quickly. Maybe most importantly they follow through on what they say and persevere.

“It can be personally frustrating,” says Bloom, “people have the misconception that we have unlimited resources and time. The reality is that we are tiny in comparison to the challenges we face and operate on a shoestring.”

Having said that, Bloom reiterates that the organization has been able to accomplish a lot. While he wants to see Suncoast Waterkeeper grow, he embraces the model of a small but active group that relies on volunteers and contribution. Bloom worked for the Hudson Riverkeeper, the original and archetype Waterkeeper organization when he was in New York. One of the signature characteristics of a Waterkeeper group comes from the Hudson Riverkeeper.

The current Interim Director of Suncoast Waterkeeper, Andy Mele started his environmental career in New York’s Hudson Valley with the group known as Hudson River Sloop Clearwater that was formed by Pete Seeger, the famous folk singer and social activist. There he inherited a 30-year battle with General Electric, which was responsible for dumping over a million pounds of carcinogenic PCBs into the Hudson at two GE plants.

Mele helped develop the strategy that led to the EPA forcing GE to sign a consent decree for the cleanup.

Mele sees many similarities between the way GE avoided its environmental liabilities and local municipalities and corporations like Mosaic that mine phosphate on Florida’s west coast. Mele and other partners were instrumental in preventing Mosaic from mining in the Charlotte Harbor watershed.

Mele relates, “When Suncoast Waterkeeper joined with two national groups to sue St. Petersburg and Gulfport, and won, we did more to remove nutrients from coastal waters than the entire state legislature.” uncoast Waterkeeper recently presented a notice of intent to sue directed at Sarasota County, which they accuse of releasing hundreds of millions of gallons of partially-treated—nutrient-rich—wastewater into Sarasota Bay over almost a decade.

According to Mele, “this is important because despite the federal and state statutes that are supposed to be protective of the

environment and human health, politics and special interests intervene and enforcement lags. That’s exactly what happened when former Governor Rick Scott fired most of the state’s environmental enforcement staff within the first month of his tenure. The ferocious episodes of red tide and thick mats of toxic cyanobacteria have been the predictable result.”

Suncoast Waterkeeper depends on volunteers and contributions from local communities to do its important work. This is a critical juncture for the nation, Florida, and west coast communities like Anna Maria. Our way of life and an economy that depends on clean water is at stake.

Tarpon still a good option CAPTAIN DAVID WHITE

It’s been a crazy week for us here at Anna Maria Charters. Myself and Captain Johnny Mattay have been fishing seemingly nonstop with all of the Island’s visitors.

Inshore, snook, sharks, snapper and Spanish mackerel have been the primary targets. With the closures of redfish, snook, and trout, mangrove snapper and Spanish mackerel are the targets when clients want to get dinner out of the deal. Live shiners are always our go to baits with some shrimp in the mix as well.

I’ve been having great success offshore.

Big red grouper, American red snapper, mangrove snapper and yellowtail are the bag out there right now fishing anywhere from 100150 feet of water with sardines, pinfish and squid. We’ve gotten grouper up to 20 pounds and snapper up to around 15. Dodging the occasional storm is necessary, as we’re into our summertime patterns. We’re hoping boat traffic slows down a bit this week and the weather stays nice throughout the day. Good luck out there.

Tarpon still will be a good option this month. Shallow water action for reds and big trout will be best early and late in the day.

Some of the best action will be with trout, blues, pompano and more on deep grass flats. Catch and release snook fishing in the ICW at night or in the surf should also be good options.

Tarpon fishing should be good in the coastal Gulf this month. Large schools of tarpon will dwindle in size and numbers to

Beat the heat in July by fishing inside waters early in the day. Craig Henke, from Charleston, S.C., fished before daylight and caught and released snook on flies before moving to the flats at dawn to catch and release trout on a CAL jig with a shad tail while fishing with Capt. Rick Grassett in a previous July. singles, doubles and small schools of post spawn fish during July. I usually find tarpon to be aggressive in July, with spawning completed, and after a long migration, they usually feed aggressively. I also find them to be more curious this time of the year, often swinging closer to check out the sound of a landing bait, lure or fly. Spin anglers will do best by setting up in travel lanes and drifting live baits under floats while staying ready to sight cast to fish that may pop up with no notice.

The DOA Baitbuster is my go to lure for tarpon. The DOA Swimming Mullet, 4-inch Shrimp and CAL 4-inch swim bait are also good choices depending on the situation. I like the Owner Beast hook with the CAL swim bait. It is easier to penetrate a hard tarpon mouth with a single sharp hook rather than a treble hook.

This is my favorite time to fly fish for tarpon. The tactics are the same as earlier in the season, anchoring or staking

out on travel routes, although fish are in a better mood. Unlike the large tarpon schools that we see around full and new moon phases in June, July fish are usually aggressive. Large schools of tarpon are impressive, but if you spook the lead fish you will spook all of them.

Tarpon will thin out towards the end of the month as they begin to move to inside waters of Sarasota Bay, Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor. They move into these areas to rest and feed following spawning. They can be targeted in these areas with flies, a variety of DOA lures or live bait. Also look for tarpon feeding in schools of breaking ladyfish in these areas.

Snook, reds and spotted seatrout are closed to harvest on the west coast of Florida.

The Florida FWC has enacted a temporary modification of regulations for reds and snook in the areas affected by last year’s red tide. The area extends from Pasco County, south to Gordon Pass in Collier County. Reds, snook and spotted seatrout (of any size) are catch and release only in that zone until May 31, 2020. news/all-news/redtide-sw/ . Since these species are now closed, use tackle heavy enough to catch and release them quickly.

Catch and release snook fishing will be a good option this month. With very warm water this time of year, it is important to use tackle heavy enough to land them quickly.

Spin anglers should do well fishing lighted docks and bridges in the ICW with CAL jigs with shad tails or jerk worms or DOA shrimp. Fly anglers should do well with clear intermediate sink tip lines and wide profile flies, such as Lefty’s Deceiver or EP flies, since larger baitfish may be more predominant. Docks and bridges close to passes should be the best ones.

You’ll also find snook in the surf, where you can walk along the beach and sight cast to them in shallow water. The same lures and flies that work at night usually also work in the surf, although be observant of the size baits that are present in the area you are fishing so you can match the hatch.

You’ll find reds very active in shallow water this month. With plentiful baitfish and higher tides, they’ll spend more time feeding over shallow grass flats. Look for them along the edges of bars or in potholes when the tide is low or along mangrove shorelines and around oyster bars when the tide is high.

You’ll also find big trout in many of the same areas where you find reds, but the bite for big trout is usually best early or late in the day. Surface walking top water plugs or fly poppers and Gurglers may draw some big explosions! Casting CAL jigs with shad tails or jerk worms ahead of your boat is a good way to locate reds.

I like to drift deep grass flats and cast ahead of my drift with CAL jigs and shad tails or jerk worms, DOA Deadly Combos or Ultra Hair Clouser flies tied on long shank hooks on sink tip fly lines to find trout. A drift anchor will slow your drift to a more manageable speed if it’s windy. Look for birds or baitfish on the surface to find fish. You may find Spanish mackerel, blues, pompano and more mixed with trout on deep grass flats.

Flats close to passes or on points that get good tidal flow are usually productive.

Breanne crowned karaoke champ Shannon Breanne never sang in public before entering the multi-week karaoke contest.

BRADENTON – Cortez Kitchen employee and Bradenton resident Shannon Breanne recently won the Suncoast Entertainment Karaoke Contest.

The seven-week contest took place at the Joyland Country Music Night Club in Bradenton.

The four weekly qualifying rounds began May 8, followed by two weeks of semi-finals on June 5 and June 12. The singing contest concluded with the finals on Wednesday, June 26.

Breanne sang in one qualifying round and one semifinal round on her way to the finals.

At the finals, she sang Aretha Franklin’s “A Natural Woman” and Alannah Myles’ “Black Velvet” to claim the top prize.

Lance Biddle led the proceedings and Carl Hunsinger, Kevin Kalley and Kari Rae judged the qualifying and semi-final rounds. Del Couch, Billy Rice and Kristen Lee then joined the judges’ panel to help evaluate the top 10 finalists.

Breanne’s victory earned her $1,200 cash, a Joyland black card, the opportunity to record with Couch – director of the Del Couch Music Education Foundation – and the opportunity to perform with the Daisy Dukes Band at one of their

shows.

“It was a very exciting and nervewracking experience for me, as until recently I never sang in front of people,” Breanne said.

Breanne’s boyfriend, Adam Sears, accompanied her to the contests and assisted her in a variety of ways.

Tide Tables bartender Staci Wilkinson attended the finals and was among those providing Breanne with emotional support.

“It was a wonderful evening and another great example of watching our little community come together to support one another. We are so proud of her,” Wilkinson said of her friend’s prize-winning performance.

Kwiatkowski said it’s legal to possess fireworks in Florida, if purchased for agricultural purposes such as scaring off birds and other animals, but it’s illegal to detonate fireworks without a permit. Kwiatkowski feels this legal loophole creates confusion and is something WMFR officials hope address in a future county ordinance.

“I don’t believe Bob Slicker was intentionally trying to break the law. I think well-intentioned people, because of this law, are put in a position that is unfortunate. We want people to celebrate, but we need them to do it in a way that is safe and legal,” Kwiatkowski said.

“This fireworks show has been going on for five years,” Slicker said. “Me and a group of local fishermen and business owners have been doing this to help our community celebrate Cortez and Independence Day. “We were doing everything out in the public, just as we have for the past five years. Until this, we never had a complaint about the fireworks show that has become a community event at no cost to anyone but those who volunteer their own money. This is the first time anybody told us we were doing something wrong. As soon as they did, we stopped and did everything asked of us,” Slicker said.

“The fire department, the sheriff’s deputies and the bomb squad were all very kind to us, and the county commissioners also helped us.

We really appreciate how helpful everyone was in walking us through the permitting process,” Slicker said.

Palma Sola Bay has seagrass beds on both sides of the Causeway as of last year’s survey, Young said, including in the northeastern section, where most commercial horseback rentals occur.

“It’s possible, even likely, that the horses are walking on it,” she said, adding that people trample seagrass too.

“Bacteria, parasites and viruses can lead to poor water quality,” Young said. “If the situation gets bad enough in a concentrated area, you do start to worry.”

Horses are vegetarians, and don’t produce the same bacteria that carnivores - like dogs do, said Charlie Hunsicker, director of the Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department.

“But horse poop is horse poop,” he said.

“Whether or not it’s generating harmful levels, we don’t know.”

Jennifer Hoffman, executive director of Keep Manatee Beautiful, said the organization’s members are concerned about the impact the horses may be having on water quality in Palma Sola Bay, and rely on the Manatee County Healthy Beaches Program to advise of any issues.

The Florida Healthy Beaches Program lists good water quality in Manatee County except for Palma Sola Bay on May 13 and June 11, due to enterococcus bacteria from fecal matter. Enterococcus also can be a result of runoff or sewage spills in the bay.

Other bacteria like leptospirosis, which can be carried by horses and dogs – also allowed on the Causeway – can be spread to people through contact with water, especially cuts in the skin, and from soil containing urine from an infected animal, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Horseback riding in Palma Sola Bay is a popular tourist activity.

The Palma Sola Scenic Highway Corridor Management Entity also has discussed the horses at the causeway.

Horses and dogs historically used the Causeway beaches long before companies began using it for commercial purposes, Co-chair Ingrid McClellan said.

While there have been issues with the companies that rent horses on the Causeway leaving waste on the shoreline, companies now scoop it from the shore, McClellan said.

“We have signs saying, ‘Leave only hoofprints behind,’ ” she said, adding that representatives from one of the horse rental companies told the group that horses do not defecate in the water.

MANATEE CAUSE OF DEATH UNCERTAIN

Waste in the bay was blamed on social media on July 5 for the death of a juvenile manatee photographed at the boat ramp at Palma Sola Bay with the title, “Palma Sewar at its finest.”

The Manatee County Utilities Department confirmed no spills of untreated sewage in Palma Sola Bay in the 48 hours following the appearance of the manatee carcass, Hunsicker said.

The carcass was retrieved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Marine Patrol and transported to the boat ramp, but it is not known if the manatee died in the bay or was retrieved from elsewhere, he said.

Coquina tree removals underway The removal of 103 Australian pines from the Coquina Beach parking lot is now full swing. On Monday, a crew from Terry’s Tree Service was busy fulfilling the Manatee County Commission-approved request to remove the pines as part of the county’s phase one stormwater and drainage project. The phase one plans include paving the south

parking lots and access roads with pervious concrete. The draft version of the county’s landscaping plan called for the replacement trees to consist of 83 green buttonwoods, 10 gumbo limbos and 10 shady lady black olive trees.

Bradenton Beach code requires the replacement trees to be at least 5 feet tall.

Privateers help kids achieve their dreams

The Anna Maria Islands Privateers are a not for profit group whose goal is to raise money for education.

In addition to dressing up like pirates, they like to provide youngsters with a chance to tell Santa what they want for Christmas, celebrate summer vacation by continuing Snooks Adams Kids’ Day and sponsor a Christmas for needy families.

The Privaters also raise money with their Thieve’s Markets, an annual ball and a rum tasting and don’t forget their latest project, a mini golf putting contest.

They award scholarships to students who have good grades in high school plus followup awards for those who keep up their grades.

Are you as smart as a private equity firm?

T

he phrase, “Follow the money,” goes back to the Watergate error as a method to shed light on corrupt activities by looking at money transfers.

But following the money does not always lead to corruption; it could lead to some really good business advice.

Last week we reported the May real estate sales statistics in both Manatee and Sarasota counties being up substantially to the point of registering the highest numbers post-recession. Manatee County’s median single-family home sale prices were up 4.9 percent from last year continuing the $300,000 or above median sales price for most of the past year and a half. How much of this increase in selling price is fueled by investors, we have no sure way of knowing. What we do know is investors are totally into the U.S. real estate market.

Based on data released by CoreLogic, Inc. last month, more than 11 percent of U.S. home purchases in 2018 were made by investors. This is a record high of in-

Investors are purchasing to flip properties or turn them into single-family rentals. The investor profile is everything from big private-equity firms to real estate speculators and individuals who want to get in on the action.

Investors swooped into the housing market in 2011 and 2012, buying with all cash when prices were low and mortgage credit was difficult to get for the average buyer. Economists gave them credit for helping to stabilize the market but expected the investors to slow down when prices started climbing after everything returned to normal. However, that hasn’t

happened partly because of a strong rental demand.

Unfortunately, much of the rental demand is coming from first-time buyers, specifically millennials who are competing with investors that are buying up the low end of the real estate market with all cash transactions. According to the CoreLogic survey, investors purchased one in five homes in the bottom third price range in 2018, exactly where first-time buyers generally start at.

Complicating things further for firsttime buyers is technology. The Internet has made it easier for smaller investors and foreign buyers to purchase properties sight unseen. A few weeks ago, I talked about iBuyer companies, such as Opendoor, Zillow and Redfin that offer cash to homeowners who want a quick deal, avoiding the stress of putting their homes on the market.

These properties are either flipped or sold to investors for potential rentals.

CorLogic further reported that investors

bought about half of the starter homes in Philadelphia last year and about 40 percent of the lower end of the market in Detroit. Again, first-time buyers are being run over by cash investors and technology.

Investors are also banking on renting vs. buying being a double-edged sword.

Owning their home has always been the goal of Americans and many feel that renting is inherently wrong and a waste of money. Now, however, first time buyers are rethinking that calculation. Mobility for job advancement is important to millennials who understand that about five years is the break even point between owning and renting and may opt to rent until their careers are stabilized.

Renting instead of buying is a conversation that doesn’t make me happy. I still believe that owning your own home has more benefits than renting and should not be entirely a business decision. My opinion – follow the money straight to your new home.

Work on the comprehensive plan will begin after a contractor is selected and the contract approved by city officials.

HOLMES BEACH – The deadline has passed, the bids are open and now it will be up to a committee appointed by Mayor Judy Titsworth to determine what outside consultant will assist the city’s Planning Commission in reviewing the comprehensive plan.

City Clerk Stacey Johnston opened the bids on July 2 in a short open meeting at city hall.

There were five companies throwing their hats in the ring.

All of the bid amounts were undisclosed. The five bidding companies are LaRue Planning of Ft. Meyers, S&ME Inc. of Orlando, CH Planning of Philadelphia, KCI Technologies of Tampa and Calvin Giordano and Associates of Clearwater.

HOLMES BEACH – City Engineer Lynn Burnett has a lot of projects going on, many of them concerning the Island’s central city’s roadways.

In a capital improvement update to commissioners, Burnett said that she plans to present them with contracts for several projects.

One of those projects is the resurfacing of Palm Drive, adding two inches to the street surface. Burnett said the bike lanes along Palm Drive will also be widened to five feet where possible on the east side of the street along the new multi-use path with bike lanes throughout the city being restriped. The project is expected to cost around $150,000.

Two new lighted crosswalks also are planned for installation, one at Gulf Drive and White Avenue and

one at Palm Drive and 72nd Street.

Two additional crosswalks, one at Gulf Drive and Guava and another at Gulf Drive and Carissa have already been planned and approved by commissioners.

Burnett said that work on the Key Royale Bridge is finished. She said there are still minor repairs to be made to the structure, but they’re mostly aesthetic in nature and are the result of normal wear and tear to the bridge. She added that she’s awaiting estimates from contractors on that work and estimates that it will come in at a cost of less than $75,000.

After meeting with representatives from the state, Burnett said the repairs needed to the seawall at city center, the intersection of Marina and Gulf Drives, can be added into current stormwater drainage work planned for the area. This negates the need to alter or obtain a new permit for the work on the state road segment. The entire project is estimated to cost $722,486. Currently, Burnett said $598,866 of that amount has been spent. She said work on the seawall should begin in August.

Youth indoor soccer teams battle at The Center

Getting out of the heat of the summer, The Center’s gym is filled with soccer enthusiasts to play and watch indoor soccer Island style. With the Ross Built Construction boards up and the stage occupied by fans and players, the fuzzy yellow soccer ball whizzed across the court last Tuesday night.

Team Ugly Grouper matched up against Team AMI Locals in a game that ended in a tie after 40 minutes of fast paced action.

The scoring started with a goal by Savanah Coba for AMI Locals just one minute into play. The team quickly took possession of the soccer ball to put another shot into the net, giving AMI Locals a two-point lead.

Without goalies in the game, the defense in the indoor soccer league has to play tough to protect its house. Both teams effectively utilized one player as a quasi-goalie, unable to use their hands in play.

Jayden Sparks scored a goal for Ugly Grouper putting the score to 2-1.

Coba took a nice shot only to be stopped by Jack Whiteside, Ugly Grouper’s goalie.

Newly added player Carsyn Deligans, visiting the Island for the season, showed the players and spectators she is a force to be reckoned with on the indoor arena with the first of three goals in the game.

Utilizing their feet, heads and walls the two advanced teams fought hard for possession and position. The score moved closer after an own goal for AMI Locals.

With the score 3-2, a one-point lead for AMI Locals, the game headed into half time.

AMI Locals started the second half of play with a kick back to a defensive teammate. Evan Talucci, with AMI Locals, showed why he was named Goalie of the Year in the previous soccer season – this time playing without the use of his hands.

Deligans scored another goal, once again giving her team the lead. Angelina Albrecht tried to close the gap with a shot saved by Talucci.

With 10 minutes left on the scoreboard clock, Albrecht took another shot this time against Deligans, who blocked the shot.

A minute later, Ugly Grouper tied it back up. Dalton Fox took the soccer ball down the court until there was one man to beat. Fox took the shot and scored for AMI Locals.

Jackson Long brought the game back

to an even score, getting a strike past Talucci.

Albrecht and Long worked together, using the boards to move the ball into scoring position. Victor Albrecht took his own shot that went just right of the post.

Hoping to regain the lead and end the game with a win, Deligans showed an incomparable hustle and skilled footwork.

Deligans’ first shot sailed right of the post. Her next shot was blocked by Whiteside. As the clocked ticked down, Whiteside maintained the tie for his team with another save on the Deligans strike, ending the game with the score 6-6.

Sign ordinance amendments up for discussion City Commissioners hope to make some sign ordinance decisions at this week’s meeting.

ANNA MARIA – City Commissioners will discuss potential changes to the city’s sign ordinance on Thursday, July 11.

On June 27, the commission adopted an emergency ordinance that established a temporary moratorium on the acceptance, review, processing or approval of applications for new sign permits for certain signs, including A-frame sandwich board signs.

When City Attorney Becky Vose presented the emergency ordinance last month, she said it was needed because the previous emergency ordinance ex-

OBITUARIES Nicholas Vincent Easterling, Nicholas Vincent Easterling, 65, passed away with his children by his side on July 01, 2019.

A native Floridian, Nick was born in Tampa to Thomas and Carmen Easterling, grew up and became a legend in Lakeland and then, as a young adult, found his true home on Anna Maria Island. Nick thrived on hunting and fishing and was a gifted pilot who could often be seen flying overhead. Nick Easterling, in a word, was “authentic.”

Whether he was fly fishing for tarpon, hunting in Montana, or putting together a business deal, Nick was Nick.

He touched and impacted the lives of many from all walks of life, making each one feel as though they were the most important one to him in that moment, which they were. He was a gifted conversationalist and loyal friend who took fashion advice from no one and

She said she received a lot of information from commissioners during a previous sign ordinance discussion, but that discussion did not produce a lot of decisions.

“I still need more input to finalize the sign ordinance,” Vose said.

Vose wants to avoid people spending money on new signs that could be grandfathered in according the current city code but may not be the types of signs the commission wants on a long-term basis.

Commissioner Doug Copeland said he would support the emergency ordinance only if the commission resumed its previous sign ordinance discussions.

At that time, city code prohibited Aframe signs, but they could still occasion-

ally be seen along Pine Avenue.

The commissioners may decide to allow the A-frame sign allowance to expire when the new pier opens, or they may decide to allow one such sign per business on a permanent basis.

The commission also wants to address the number of signs allowed at construction sites and where certain signs can be placed on a property.

Theresa 'Terri' Rose Robertson Theresa “Terri” Rose Robertson (née Parrette), 92, died on July 1, 2019, in Bradenton, FL after a brief stay in hospice.

She leaves her son, Joseph Womack, and wife Lili of Jupiter, Fla.; granddaughter, Hayley Womack, of Newport Beach, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews; and beloved canine companion, Reggie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Robertson.

Born on Nov. 22, 1926, Terri helped

her parents run a candy store in Minneapolis, Minn., during the Great Depression. In 1944, she was recognized by the annual talent search for Westinghouse Science Scholarship.

She earned a B.A. from Marquette University in 1948 and was selected for employment with the U.S. Department of State shortly after graduation. While a consular officer and secretary in the Diplomatic Service, for the next three decades, Terri worked and traveled all over the world. She served in posts in the embassies of Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Nepal, Belgium, Mexico, and South Africa.

She met her husband, Don, a fellow diplomat from Canada, while on assignment. After retirement, Terri and Don lived on Anna Maria Island, where they enjoyed boating. Terri moved to Bradenton after Don’s death. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
