BRADENTON BEACH – City officials have found the undelivered floating day dock and are now cautiously optimistic the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) dock project will be completed.

Police Chief Sam Speciale and CRA chair Ralph Cole found the aluminum-framed dock decking in Gibsonton on Thursday, Nov. 8. This happened one day after the CRA members directed Speciale to use his investigative resources to try to find the undelivered dock sections.

HOLMES BEACH – The election is over, the results are in and a new mayor and new commissioners will take the dais at the city’s annual organizational meeting later in November.

Former commissioner and mayor-elect Judy Titsworth took home 79.3 percent of the vote with political newcomer Joshua Linney bringing in 20.7 percent. Though he’s never served on the dais, Linney was previously a member of the SEE MAYOR, PAGE 37

Cole and Maro win in Bradenton Beach The election results leave the current Bradenton Beach Commission intact for another year.

BRADENTON BEACH – City voters elected incumbent commissioners Ralph Cole and Marilyn Maro last week, favoring them over challengers Tjet Martin and John Metz.

Voters also adopted seven charter amendments and the city’s request to rezone Katie Pierola Park.

In the at-large elections created by last year’s elimination of commission wards, the two highest vote-getters won commission seats. Cole received 293 votes (32.2 percent), Maro received 251 (27.58 percent), Metz received 195 (21.43 percent) and Martin received 171 (18.79 percent).

Maro and Cole will serve additional two-year terms and be sworn in on Monday, Dec. 19.

In 2017, Cole lost his re-election bid to Ward 3 opponent Randy White, but he was then appointed to fill the vacant commission seat created by Commissioner John Chappie’s victory in the mayor’s race.

“I want to thank all the people that voted for me. I’m glad it went the way it did. We got our charter back, and it’s even stronger,” Cole said of this year’s results.

“We found out that when we have a larger turnout we have a better view of what the majority thinks. I made

a statement earlier this year that we didn’t get a fair shake on last year’s amendments because we had about 25 percent of our residents deciding to change our city charter. That’s why it’s so important that you vote in every election,” he added.

This year, an average of 516 of the

city’s 731 registered voters voted on each of the seven charter amendments proposed by the commission-appointed Charter Review Committee. In the 2017 stand-alone city elections, an average of 380 voters voted on each of the three charter amendments successfully pursued by the Concerned Neighbors of Bradenton Beach.

“I went door to door. I couldn’t talk to everybody, but I did talk to quite a few people. I learned that they like the way our city is and the majority of the people like living here,” Cole said.

In Dec. 2017, the commission appointed Maro to fill the commission seat vacated after Ed Straight termlimited out of office.

“I want to thank all the voters and all the supporters and the firemen who worked so hard on this election. This was my first election, and Ralph and I talked to as many voters as we could.

The people in Bradenton Beach seem pleased,” Maro said.

“Our commission works well together. We have a great leader (Chappie) who listens and discusses the issues before us and staff works well with SEE BRADENTON BEACH, PAGE 34

Packed agenda in Holmes beach Holmes Beach commissioners have a full agenda for the final meeting of its current sitting commission at 6 p.m. Nov. 13. Items on the agenda include public hearings and second readings for a C-1 to C-2 rezone of the Michael Norman Realty building at 3101 Gulf Drive, and for amendments to the city’s vacation rental ordinance.

A public hearing and vote also will be held for a request to expand Jessie’s Island Store located at 5424 Marina Drive. A first reading also is scheduled for the city’s moratorium on the use of dockless bicycle and scooter systems as well as for the new five-year schedule of capital improvements.

Planning commissioners are scheduled to present their proposed value statements for the city’s comprehensive plan. Commissioners also will vote on the stormwater management utility fee schedule, an allowance for mosquito control to fly over the city, a $30,600 contract for a short-term rental monitoring system and agreements for the $105,240 purchase and installation of a license plate reader system.

City engineer Lynn Burnett is expected to give updates on Spring Lake and the city field complex remodel.

Anna Maria candidates win unopposed Running unopposed in last week’s city elections, Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy and City Commissioners Amy Tripp and Brian Seymour have retained their seats and will serve additional two-year terms in office.

They will serve for the next year with Commissioners Carol Carter, Doug Copeland and Dale Woodland, whose current commission terms expire in November 2019.

Whitmore wins reelection bid

Island resident Carol Whitmore will return to a county commission that will include two new commissioners.

MANATEE COUNTY – Manatee County voters, including those on Anna Maria Island, reelected incumbent District 6 at-large County Commissioner Carol Whitmore to another four-year term.

In a race that did not include Island voters, county voters elected Republican candidate Misty Servia in the District 4 County Commission race and Democrat Reggie Bellamy in the District 2 County Commission race.

Whitmore, a Holmes Beach resident and former Holmes Beach mayor, received 98,364 votes (63.35 percent).

Canace Luther, the non-party-affiliated challenger, received 56,901 votes (36.65 percent).

Whitmore awaited the election results at Pier 22 in Bradenton, joined by family members, friends and some former longtime Island residents.

“I’m very excited and happy. I have a positive outlook on working with the new board members,” Whitmore said afterwards. “I think I bring knowledge and calm to a sometimes-contentious board. Hopefully, we won’t need that with the new board.”

Whitmore, Servia and Bellamy will be sworn in at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

They will join Vanessa Baugh, Betsy Benac, Steve Jonsson and Priscilla Trace on the reconfigured County Commission.

In the lone remaining Manatee County School Board race, Scott Hopes defeated Joe Stokes. Hopes received 71,035 votes (51.56 percent) and Stokes received 66,734 votes (48.44 percent).

Carol Whitmore, County commissioner voters supported Ron DeSantis (93,206 votes/57.05 percent) over Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum (67,574 votes/41.35 percent) and three other gubernatorial candidates.

County voters favored Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rick Scott (94,324 votes/57.64 percent) over longtime Democratic Senator Bill Nelson (68,795 votes/42.04 percent). They also helped reelect Republican Vern Buchanan (95,109 votes/58.45 percent) to the U.S. House of Representatives, with Democratic challenger David Sha-

piro receiving 67,603 votes (41.55 percent) in Manatee County.

Manatee and Sarasota County voters combined to elect attorney and former Bradenton Beach special master Will Robinson to the Florida House of Representatives. In Manatee County, Robinson, a Republican, received 33,787 votes (57.59 percent) and Democratic candidate Tracy Pratt received 24,881 votes (42.41 percent).

Countywide voter turnout was 67.24 percent, with 164,804 of the county’s 245,088 registered voters participating the elections.

Anna Maria coyotes spur government, resident response Anna Maria residents are voicing their concerns over the coyotes wandering their streets.

Meanwhile the city is working out a plan to stop the carnivorous, invading canines.

ANNA MARIA – Canis latrans coyotes - continue to plague Anna Maria Island. Residents in Anna Maria are spotting them in the streets and tourists are confronting them at their rentals.

Anna Maria residents Jeff and Jean Murray brought their concerns to the city commission Nov. 8. The Murrays said they’ve seen the wild animals roaming Tarpon Avenue and the surrounding streets.

“There’s no natural prey here, such as raccoons or possums,” Jeff Murray told commissioners during the public comment segment of the meeting. “If something isn’t done

they’ll become more and more aggressive towards our pets.”

Jean Murray said she heard a story about Anna Maria “part-timers” from Newfoundland who spotted a coyote, confronted it and lived to tell the tale. “They saw it strolling down the street and confronted it,” she said. “It got away but it was injured during the confrontation. “‘Something needs to be done.”

Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy said the city has been in contact with two local trappers about dealing with the coyote menace but nothing has been decided yet.

“There are a couple of options on the table,” he said. “Some ugly ways, some clearer ways, and some expensive and some not-so expensive. But something is being done.”

The mayor didn’t have much more to present to the commissioners but promised he would have something to show them for a decision soon.

“This also needs to be an Islandwide effort,” Murphy said. “It won’t do anyone any good if we take care

of the coyotes here but Holmes Beach or Bradenton Beach hasn’t or isn’t able to do anything. They’ll come right back.”

Information found on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission’s website states trapping is an ineffective way to control coyotes. The FWC site says studies have shown that coyote populations rebound after trapping sessions. Coyotes actually produce more pups per litter in response.

Murphy plans to bring up the coyote problem to the Coalition of Barrier Island Elected Officials.

The CBIEO normally meets once a month. The next meeting was scheduled for Nov. 13 in Bradenton Beach but was cancelled.

As of writing, the next meeting hasn’t been publicly posted.

Meanwhile residents, tourists and part-timers are warned to remain vigilant and be cautious when walking pets or going for a stroll.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission recommends keeping

pets indoors, walking dogs on short leashes, having a fence at or above six feet and keeping all trash secured or indoors as much as possible.

People have reported high fences aren’t keeping the wild animals out and they don’t seem to be scared of people.

Commissioner Carol Carter said she’s spotted coyotes too near to where she lives. “One was just prancing down the street on a Sunday morning,” she said. Now her husband carries a golf club with him when he walks their dog.

Jean Murray concurred the coyotes are coming out during the day. She said she’s been keeping her ten cats indoors to keep them safe. “I’m getting PTSD from all my cats. Something has to be done and soon.”

Until government action is taken, city and FWC officials recommend people do not confront the animals.

If one is spotted in Anna Maria, residents should call the Manatee County Sheriff ’s Office at 941-7088899.

Thank you for your service

We veterans are hearing that a lot lately and it’s good to know we are appreciated.

When I enlisted in the Marines in 1968, the Vietnam War was going full steam. That conflict became unpopular as body bags of American fighters returned home at a feverish pace and there was no real progress toward peace until the United States capitulated, withdrawing its troops. There was no victory for Vietnam veterans.

I spent a year there and almost all of my friends backed my intentions to go, even though on occasion, a stranger would call me a “baby killer” or refuse to talk with me. The fact that I ran around with a fairly liberal crowd attested to how faithful they were. I joined the Marines because I loved my country. I wasn’t doing it for the joy of killing because there is no joy in killing. I answered the call, even though I had doubts about the feasibility of our efforts.

My family always answered the call. My father was stationed in England in the Army Air Corps in World War II and rejoined for the Korean War. My mother and grandmother lived together during WWII, waiting on the fate of a boyfriend who never returned, a husband who was in the Navy and my uncle, who was steaming into Pearl Harbor on Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941.

When I joined the Marines, I did so after my brother, Mike, did. At one time, we spent two days together in Danang before returning to our bases. We thankfully made it back home.

So, as I march in Veterans Day parades, it is with an added measure of pleasure to hear, “Thank you for your service.”

Praise for police

In our hearts Laurie Crawford passed away Thursday night suddenly. She served on Animal Services Advisory Board for many years and pushed for the first dog park in Manatee County at GT Bray.

She worked tirelessly with Animal Network on animal issues. Laurie and all animal lovers pushed for the county to try to save as many adoptable animals as possibly with the No Kill movement.

The county reached a 93 percent save rate Oct. 1, 2017- Sept. 31, 2018 for the first time.

Animal Network, with Laurie’s team, started Canine Christmas at Bishop and organized it for many years.

Laurie has a special place in all our hearts.

Rest in peace my friend.

The Friends of the Island Library would like to applaud the Holmes Beach Police Department for the wonderful evening, Oct 2nd, for "National Night Out." The work they did to provide a fun, free, entertaining evening for our community speaks volumes to the positive outreach they endorse.

The Friends Board Members were fortunate to participate in this evening by giving away free books that they secured, thanks to Sgt. Vern McGowan. We, of course, were elated to encourage children to learn to love reading! Parents and kids alike were very positively impacted to receive free books that they could have in their own house to encourage reading skills at home.

Thanks, Holmes Beach Police Department, for hosting this event and we were honored to participate.

BRADENTON BEACH – The Bridge Street Merchants are finalizing their plans for the annual Christmas on Bridge Street holiday celebration taking place this year on Saturday, Dec. 15.

Bridge Street Merchants’ president Fred Bartizal said this year’s Christmas on Bridge Street event starts around 5 p.m. and takes place along the east end of Bridge Street, near the roundabout, the Bridge Tender Inn and the historic Bridge Street Pier.

“Santa Claus will go from store to store in a golf cart to see the kids and have pictures taken,” Bartizal said. “We’re going to have the bands on a flatbed in the parking spaces along Bridge Street in front of the Bridge Tender Inn. It’s going to sit there for a while, and then it’s going to go around the block a couple times with the band playing. Steve Arvey’s in charge of the live music, and we hope to have the Christmas carolers back too.”

Bartizal said participating merchants are planning holiday crafts activities for the kids and participating bars and restaurants will offer special drinks or drink specials.

Bartizal said the merchants’ annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony is being planned for Friday, Nov. 23, the day after Thanksgiving. The Christmas tree is expected to be placed in or near the large planter box in the roundabout at the east end of Bridge Street, near the pier City commissioners recently approved the roundabout planter box and two other spots as possible locations for the Christmas tree. The area by the nearby stormwater cistern and the city right of way in front of the post office were also approved.

Mayor John Chappie and Commissioner Ralph Cole said they liked the planter box location, but Chappie said he wants the existing tree left in place rather than being replanted elsewhere.

He feels the tree is in good health and doing well in that location.

“We’ll figure out a way to get it up there,” Bartizal said of the Christmas tree.

On Nov. 7, Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) members agreed to spend $14,227 this year on holiday decorations to supplement the $20,000 in decorations purchased in previous years by the Bridge Street Merchants association. The decorations will be purchased from Christmas Designers, the company that decorates University Boulevard and the University Town Center mall in Sarasota. The company will also install, remove, maintain and store the purchased decorations.

The purchase will not not include the previously-discussed decorative skylines that would have hung above Bridge Street. If all three skylines had been purchased, the expenditure would have been upwards of $32,000.

The CRA hopes to revisit and

potentially purchase the skylines next year.

ADDITIONAL HOLIDAY EVENTS The Anna Maria Island Privateer’s will host their annual Christmas parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8. The parade will start at Bayfront Park in Anna Maria, pass through Holmes Beach and end at Coquina Beach in Bradenton Beach.

The Privateers will also be on hand for the Dec. 15 Christmas at the Drift In holiday fundraiser.

Proceeds from that event will help provide Christmas gifts and holiday meals for this year’s adopted holiday families.

Members of the recentlyformed Love Bradenton Beach business collective are planning a lighted golf cart parade on Friday, Dec. 14, and a holiday boat parade on Saturday, Dec. 15. More details on the golf cart and boat parades are expected soon at www.LoveBradentonBeach.com.

Planning commissioners consider commercial rezone After a heated debate, planning commissioners voted three to two in favor of a request to change the commercial zoning of a real estate office to C-2 from C-1 as consistent with the comprehensive plan.

HOLMES BEACH – What started out as a potentially simple commercial rezoning request for an office building currently owned and occupied by Mike Norman Realty was a hard sell for some planning commissioners.

Tasked with determining whether or not a request to change the commercial zoning of the property is consistent with the city’s comprehensive plan, planning commissioners found themselves divided on the issue. Currently, the 1,200 square-foot building is zoned C-1, which allows only for offices in the space.

The owners at Mike Norman Realty requested a rezone to C-2, which would allow a retail establishment or small café to open up shop in the space. City

Some planning commissioners worried about allowing an

increase in intensity of use in the space because it’s bordered partly by conservation lands included in Grassy Point Preserve.

Planning Commissioner Jayne Christenson said she feels the property is more consistent with being claimed as conservation

land and a part of the preserve, not as a continuation of the commercial space on two sides of the property.

Planning Commissioner Scott Boyd, a former city planner, argued that from a pure planning perspective, the real estate office property appears to be a case of

spot zoning and should be allowed to expand its commercial business options for future use.

“There’s no need to change it until they tell us why they want to do it,” Christenson said.

Planner Darenda Marvin, speaking on behalf of the property owners, said that the request for a rezone is to allow for different future uses of the property if it was determined at some point that the realty company didn’t need to maintain a physical office or future generations of the family want to use the property for another purpose. She said currently there is no plan to close the realty office.

“I think this is a terrible idea,” Planning Commissioner Barbara Hines said.

“If it was consistent, we wouldn’t feel uncomfortable. If this motion passes I feel it would be a shameful day for Holmes Beach and this commission.”

“We all worry about what may happen in the future,” Chair Charles Stealey said.

“Everyone has rights.”

The matter moves back before city commissioners for a final public hearing and vote Nov. 13.

Parks committee gets back to work In their second meeting of the year, members of the Holmes Beach Parks and Beautification Committee got down to business.

“We’re going to find a way to improve the lake,” Soustek said. “It’s not easy but I’m sorry it went this far. I didn’t know it was that bad.”

Mayor Bob Johnson said the city is going through a stage of research on the lake and how to best improve the water quality.

HOLMES BEACH – Summer break is over and the members of the city’s Parks and Beautification Committee are ready to get back to work.

Members met Nov. 7 at city hall to discuss how to move forward with their priorities for the year.

DOG PARK

Though the dog park hasn’t been relocated yet, committee members are still watching the plans for the city field complex remodel, including the dog park, very closely. At its current location, two large umbrella type awnings were installed in the large dog park to provide more shade for users.

Don Anthony, a former member of the committee and dog park user, said that small dog park users would like city leaders to consider straightening out a curved fence in that park to give the dogs about eight to 10 more feet of usable space. Commissioner Carol Soustek said that though the overview plan of the park had been accepted and

“We’re taking into account all opinions submitted,” she said.

SPRING LAKE

Another project being watched by committee members is the cleanup effort at Spring Lake Park.

“It doesn’t look real good,” committee Chair Zan Fuller said of the water condition at the lake.

One project committee members can move forward on now is the replanting of three medians located in city center, near the intersection of Marina and Gulf drives.

Each of the three medians is being equipped with irrigation and lights as well as palm trees, where needed, and muhly grass. Crushed shell will be used to fill in around the landscaping, and Fuller said the committee is working with public works employees to locate white or other light-colored reflective paint to help make the curbs around the islands more visible to drivers. Once completed, she said she hopes the islands will be adopted by local businesses or nonprofits to help the city with maintenance and keeping the areas debris-free.

Committee members meet at 10 a.m. on the first Wednesday of the month through May at city hall, 5801 Marina Drive. The committee is still searching for two additional members to serve as alternates.

“We’ve got lots to do,” Fuller said.

Festival provides hurricane, red tide assistance

CORTEZ – This year’s 7th Annual Cortez Stone Crab and Music Festival was about more than good food, good music and good times – this year, it was also about good will.

Blessing Bags accepted toy donations at the admissions gate to benefit the children of Port St. Joe, hit hard by Hurricane Michael last month, while the Florida Restaurant Employee Red Tide Relief Fund and Service Industry Relief Festivities (SIRF) accepted cash donations to help local workers hit hard by red tide.

The fundraising effort began in August, when red tide hit local waters, and will continue regardless of when the red tide lifts, said Robert DeMino, director of the Florida Restaurant Employee Red Tide Relief Fund.

The festival also was a benefit for Fishing for Freedom, an organization of volunteers dedicated to preserving the federal and state constitutions, the environment, the economy and citizens’ rights through responsible SEE CRAB, PAGE 15

scientific, ecological and biological management. The Manatee chapter actively opposes legislation, such as the gill net ban, that makes it difficult for commercial fisherman to make a living. They also organize and participate in rallies and coastal cleanup events in Manatee County.

The stone crab season got off to a slow start on Oct. 15, but has picked up since, said festival organizer Bob Slicker, of the Swordfish Grill and Tiki Bar, providing plenty of claws for crab lovers at the festival.

John Banyas, a fourth-generation fisherman and the owner of Cortez Bait & Seafood, started the festival as a party for fishermen to kick off stone crab season, which is followed quickly by mullet season. Last year's attendance was close to 20,000.

Oil drilling prohibited in Florida waters

Floridians voted to prohibit oil drilling in state waters on Nov. 6, passing Florida Constitutional Amendment 9 by 69 percent.

Manatee County voters followed suit, approving the amendment by 69.44 percent.

It takes 60 percent of voters to approve a state constitutional amendment.

The proposal will prohibit drilling for exploration or extraction of oil or natural gas beneath all state waters between the mean high-water line and the outermost boundaries of the state’s territorial seas, about nine miles off the western and southern coastlines in the Gulf of Mexico

and at least three miles off the eastern coastline in the Atlantic Ocean.

Drilling in federal waters is not affected.

The measure also prohibits the use of vapor-generating electronic devices in enclosed indoor workplaces.

The Florida Supreme Court placed the amendment back on the ballot shortly before the election after a Leon County circuit court judge removed it and two others from the ballot for combining unrelated issues in single proposed amendments.

In its Oct. 17 opinion, the state’s high court ruled that the Florida Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) can include multiple issues in single amend-

ments, but three justices criticized the practice.

“When amending our Florida Constitution, voters should not be forced to vote ‘yes’ on a proposal they disfavor in order to also vote ‘yes’ on a proposal they support because of how the Constitution Revision Commission has unilaterally decided to bundle multiple, independent and unrelated proposals,” Justice Barbara Pariente wrote.

The amendment was supported by the League of Women Voters, Florida Wildlife Federation, Gulf Restoration Network, American Cancer Society, Florida Policy Institute, Progress Florida, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and Earthjustice.

Anna Maria approves new home landscape regs

ANNA MARIA ¬ The city’s landscape ordinance was adopted by the city commission in a four to one vote Nov. 8.

Commissioner Dale Woodland was the dissenting vote.

The ordinance regulates how many plants, what type of plants and what percentage must be covered for all new residential builds and rebuilds in Anna Maria.

Homeowners will not be able to receive a certificate of occupancy without following the city’s new flora rules. But homeowners can ask for variances depending on where their property lies.

The latest regulation hasn’t had an easy journey to adoption.

The ordinance was briefly stopped from being passed the last time it was read Oct. 11. Resident Sam Pakbaz pointed out a potential flaw, a discrepancy that affected homes built along the city’s shores which bordered protected, unbuildable dunescapes.

The language has since been clarified and the loophole closed.

Before that, the Anna Maria Planning and Zoning Board warned the commission about possible issues too. Their opinion was that the regulation shouldn’t be adopted but that more work needed to be done.

VRC causes planning commission concern Planning commissioners expressed concern that they are causing legal issues for the city by passing an amendment to the vacation rental ordinance as consistent with the comprehensive plan without first reviewing the original ordinance.

HOLMES BEACH – Planning commissioners found themselves facing a conundrum when voting on an amendment to the city’s vacation rental certificate program’s consistency with the comprehensive plan.

Planning commissioners were firmly onboard with passing the amendment as consistent until

Commissioner Scott Boyd said he was concerned about approving an amendment to an ordinance that wasn’t reviewed by the planning commission. The reason the original ordinances didn’t go before the planning commission is that though there were planning commissioners at the time, the group was inactive. Now the vacation rental certificate program is in its second year, approaching its first round of renewals, and Building Official Jim McGuinness said it’s the city’s hope to pass the ordinance amendment to give code enforcement officers a better way to enforce compliance with the program.

and managers also required to meet certain advertisement and occupancy standards.

Scott said he would like the planning commission to review the entire VRC and related ordinances before ruling on an amendment.

City Commissioner Carol Soustek stepped up to the podium, saying that with the delay already in getting the amendment before city and planning commissioners, she’s concerned about stalling approvals for another month with certificate renewals ongoing.

“I believe it is consistent with the comprehensive plan,” Planning Commissioner Barbara Hines said, adding that it would be up to city attorney Patricia Petruff to catch any legal inconsistencies with the planning commission’s approval of the ordinance amendment.

“I think this is phenomenal,” she said of the ordinance amendment. “I think it’s perfect.”

Chair Charles Stealey shared Hines’s admiration of the ordinance amendment language. “This is excellent,” he said. “I think you have hit upon everything I could think of.”

Boyd warned Stealey that with a stakeholder meeting Nov. 13 and the final reading of the amendment at the Nov. 13 commission meeting, the language could change.

“You never get it right on the first time,” Stealey said.

Planning commissioners voted unanimously to approve the ordinance amendment as consistent with the comprehensive plan.

‘Baggage’ is a madhouse The play runs through Nov. 18 at the Island Players in Anna Maria

ANNA MARIA – Over the past 70 years the Island Players have produced some unusual plays, and “Baggage”

by Sam Bobrick is among the most unusual.

Two bags switched at an airport, the “baggage,” were onstage for a short time, but the characters’ mental baggage was apparent throughout the play. Filled with the angst of broken hearts and the difficulty of rebuilding one’s self, “To love or not love,” was the question asked.

The four veteran actors tackled their roles with vigor.

Caldwell were great. Caldwell played Mitzy, a character who attacks love relations with the all tenderness of defensive tackle. Kopp, played Jonathan, a relationship counselor with “a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree and a PhD, et cetera, et cetera.”

Director James Thaggard had his actors at their best and most engaging in their performances. The invisible wall between the cast on stage and the audience in the seats was breached late in the show when they referred to the performance as a play and engaged the audience, proving that anything goes in “Baggage.”

“Baggage” is a scream at times, a madhouse of laughs and well worth the cost of a ticket. You’ll be sorry if you missed it. It is also part of the artsHOP celebration.

Island Players host a Welsh delight Gareth Gibbs, one of the actors, has a history of acting on the Island.

The Players' Theatre of Wales, UK are coming to the Island Players Playhouse for three performances immediately after Thanksgiving on Friday, Nov. 23, and Sat. Nov. 24, at 8 p.m.; and on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m., with their award winning production of the spoof play based on Bulldog Drummond called "Bullshot Crummond" a play written by five Americans about a British Super Sleuth in the 1930s. It’s a real outrageous comedy which the Island audiences will love.

Why are these Welsh Players travelling 5000 miles to appear at the Island Playhouse?

“Well the answer is that they have been here many times before, In fact, their first

performance was back in 1980, and every few years they have returned periodically up until 2008 when they presented Oscar Wilde's "The Importance Of Being Earnest" to great acclaim," said Gareth Gibbs in an email from Wales.

2018 has been a good year for The Players as in July they were awarded the British One Act Championship –The Lord Howard de Walden Trophy – for their production of an original play by one of the group, Gabe Torrens, entitled "The Bridge."

“In its 41-year history, the group has won this coveted title no less than four times, more than any other company in England or Wales,” Gibbs said. “More than 500 companies throughout England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales entered this year's competition.”

Gareth and his wife, Mavis, are well known among theater people on the Island, and several of the board members have visited the Gibbs' in Wales over the years.

artsHOP draws crowds

HOLMES BEACH ¬– The final night of artsHOP was a huge success as crowd filled participating stores and art galleries, and the cash registers were busy.

There were two artists at Waterline Marina Resort and Beach Club. Joanne Coke was painting colorful flowers and Kelly Hunt was working on painting with a fish.

“I’m an Island native, and I grew up here and went to Anna Maria Elementary School,” Hunt said. “I love art, and this is my way of giving back to the Island.”

Visitors enjoyed the snacks there including prosciutto, cheeses, salsa, chips and crackers.

Across the street, in the Holmes Beach Shopping Center, it looked like the annual Christmas walk with people going in and out of the shops that were open.

Restless Natives owner Adina Digus and her mother, Lida, were amazed at the heavy traffic of lookers and buyers.

To the rear of the room, at How Lucky AMI, Samantha Heil was at the cash register.

“I’ve seen many people I’ve never seen before,” she said. “The (artsHOP) organizers did a great job.”

Things were different on Anna Maria Island in the old days. Within the lifetimes of our eldest residents, there was no bridge leading to the Island and people took a ferry across the Intracoastal Waterway. Even earlier, they arrived at the Anna Maria City Pier by steamship from Tampa. Ladies’ swimsuits included hats. Roads were made of sea shells. But some things remain the same, like the surf, the sand, the sun, and the postcard sentiment, “Wish you were here.”

Preparing for fall fishing Reel Time RUSTY CHINNIS

F

all is here even though it may not feel like it. We still have the windows and doors closed and the AC on, but the light and the cool mornings are teasing us with the promise of change. The golden lining is the coming cooler weather, the passing of the red tide and hopefully some of the season’s best fishing. When you read this, a front will have just passed through and as water temperatures drop, schools of bait should migrate inshore with pelagic species like kingfish, Spanish mackerel, false albacore, cobia and triple tail hot on their trail.

Now is a great time to prepare for the promise of fall, getting tackle in order and keeping an eye to the sky for diving birds and on the water for breaking fish. For-

tunately, all of these species can be found right off our Gulf beaches and some even enter the bays. All of these species will take live bait, lures or flies and can be caught on spinning, bait casting or fly tackle. With the possible exception of king mackerel and cobia, most are able to be landed with light tackle, which adds to the excitement.

Depending on the species you’re targeting you’ll want to rig accordingly. Since it’s possible to encounter such a plethora of fish in a single outing, multiple outfits are a good idea. One of the main considerations will be rigging your bite tippet and leader. Options include wire, monofilament, long shanked hooks or a combination of these. It’s possible to catch a kingfish without wire, but your odds aren’t good.

The same applies with certain exceptions to Spanish mackerel. Mackerel can sometimes shy away from wire. That’s the time to switch to a long shank hook or a heavy (60 pound) monofilament leader. Even then it’s RUSTY CHINNIS | SUN

possible to get cut off, but you’ll get more action that way.

When using wire an eight- to 12-inch trace can be tied to monofilament using an Albright Special knot (best) or a swivel. If you use a swivel use a black as opposed to silver one to prevent fish from mistaking it for forage. American Fishing Wire makes a product called Surflon Micro Supreme that is extremely flexible and kink resistant.

This wire can be knotted to your lure, hook or fly like monofilament; it also provides greater flexibility and less stretch than monofilament. Umpqua makes a product that’s ideal for fly anglers. Its Re-Twistable Haywire Twist wire is reusable and will allow you to change flies in a snap. This is the quickest and most painless system to rig wire for toothy fish.

Wire is less likely to deter a bite under low light conditions like early morning, overcast days and late in the day.

One of the most effective ways to find schooling fish in the fall is to look

for surface action and diving birds in the inshore Gulf waters. Predators also can be present without revealing themselves around structure, reefs and wrecks. When you find feeding fish, you can approach them by trolling, drifting or with the use of a trolling motor.

Whatever method you employ, never let your boat pass through or get too close to the action. With more and more boats and anglers pursuing feeding fish, they are likely to sound and move away. The best bet is to stay outside the action but within casting distance. If trolling, make wide turns so only your lures pass through the action.

Live bait anglers target schooling fish in a number of ways. By anchoring up current from a likely area, they may deploy a chum bag and then toss wounded live baits to draw fish into casting range. This can be an extremely effective method.

Snook fishing has been the best it’s been for as long as I can remember. We here at Anna Maria Charters are having trips where up to 75 or 100 snook are being caught in a 4 hour trip. The action is truly nonstop. Also in the mix while snook fishing are Jack crevalle and mangrove snapper.

Over the reefs, we’re targeting larger snapper, gag grouper and Spanish mackerel as well.

And then slipping a hook in the mix is sure to get you hooked up.

Offshore, big amberjack, and a lot of blackfin tuna have been around lately. I’m hoping that they’ll stick around after this significant front comes through.

Egmont Key to be renourished

EGMONT KEY – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is supplying the weapons in the only battle Fort Dade has ever seen – the one against erosion.

Historic Egmont Key is slated to receive sand to shore up what’s left of the 1899 fort when the Tampa Bay shipping channel is dredged for maintenance beginning this month.

The $10 million project should take about five months to complete.

Egmont’s beaches will not get the high-quality white beach sand recently collected from shoals to its north; that is being used to renourish Pinellas County beaches, according to Pinellas County spokeswoman Ashley Johnson.

Egmont Key, north of Anna Maria Island, will get the sand dredged from 17 miles of the Tampa Harbor Egmont and Mullet Key channel cuts, according to Susan Jackson, of the Corps’ Jacksonville corporate communications office.

The sand will be placed in the middle of Egmont Key’s west side, which faces the Gulf of Mexico, then the project will move to the north end of the island and make its way south, according to the project description.

The dredged material “can be beneficially placed on Egmont Key rather than at a dredge disposal site,” she said.

NATURE PRESERVE

The key is protected by both state and federal law as Egmont Key State Park and Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge, and is a nesting ground for shorebirds and sea turtles, as well as a gopher tortoise preserve.

But the animals don’t seem to mind

Egmont has been renourished with dredged material from the shipping channel before, and sea turtles broke nesting records the last two years, with the 2018 season that ended on Oct. 31 producing 150 nests, he said.

Placing the sand in the early part of the winter season provides time for wave action on the beach to naturally sort the sand and silt, project biologist Aubree Hershorin said, adding, “This is important, because it ensures the beach is as suitable as possible for

nesting sea turtles that will begin using the area in April.”

EROSION PROBLEM

Egmont Key was used by the U.S. Army to detain Seminole prisoners at the end of the third Seminole War in 1858, and was occupied by both Confederate and Union troops during the Civil War. It later became the site of Fort Dade, begun in 1899 to defend against Spanish attack during the Spanish-American War. The fort, completed in 1906, served its defensive purpose so well that no battles were ever fought there.

But it has been losing the battle

against the Gulf and its storms; parts of the fort are submerged.

The dredge project “will put another Band-Aid on it,” Sanchez said.

Erosion control geotubes installed on the north end of Egmont seem to be holding the Gulf at bay there, he said, although Hurricane Irma moved some of the sand off the north tip in 2017.

A $13 million Corps plan to control erosion and renourish Egmont Key has been in limbo for years, he said.

Despite all the required agency approvals being in place, it’s hard to justify funds for a largely-uninhabited nature preserve when people need funds to rebuild from hurricanes, he said.

The island is a temporary home for the Tampa Bay Pilots who maintain living quarters at their docks, where pilot boats transport them to tankers entering and leaving Tampa Bay. A lighthouse keeper also has quarters on the key. The working lighthouse dates to 1858, and replaced the original lighthouse built 10 years earlier. It is operated by the U.S. Coast Guard as an aid to navigation.

Egmont Key was named for John Perceval, the second Earl of Egmont and a member of the Irish House of Commons who died in 1770. The title “Earl of Egmont” died with the death of the childless Thomas Frederick Gerald Perceval, the 12th Earl of Egmont, in 2011.

The island has been the property of the U.S. Department of the Interior since 1974. Prior to that, it was owned by the U.S. Department of Defense, previously known as the U.S. Department of War. The key has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.

Bridge Street loses a Buddy Buddy Lee made a lot of friends during his Bridge Street travels.

BRADENTON BEACH – Bridge Street and Bradenton Beach lost a good buddy last week when Buddy Lee, the 14-year-old purebred tick beagle, passed away.

Buddy had to be put to sleep on Monday, Nov. 5. A memorial marker erected in his honor now graces the front yard of Claudia Lee and Rip VanFossen’s home on Third Street South.

“I bought the dog for Claudia.

We got him as a pup and he spent his whole life here,” VanFossen said on Wednesday.

“We got in accident Labor Day weekend. The airbag went off in my truck and blinded him and he lost his hearing from the explosion of it. He couldn’t hear, and he couldn’t see, and his blood work was bad, so we had to put him to sleep Monday.

We took him to get his eye taken out, but the vet called back and said he’s in too bad of shape,” he explained.

“He never was tied. He just went his own way. He’d sit in the middle of the street. He’d let people honk their horns and he wouldn’t move. It was amazing how many people know who he was. He probably had more friends than I had,” said VanFossen, a well-known plumber.

“All the people at the Bridge Tender knew him because he lived around the corner. He went through four hurricanes, he loved to ride on the motorcycle and he once made friends with a goat. He was quite the dog. I don’t think we’ll ever see another one like him. Because of all the growth, nobody can have a dog untied like that again,” VanFossen said.

After finishing her shift at Hurricane Hank’s in Holmes Beach, Lee said, “Everybody knew Buddy. One day, at five in the morning, I get this phone call from somebody who was down on vacation. They found Buddy at the Circle K and thought he was lost so they took him ‘home’ and I had to go get him. He was playing with their dog."

“That was so nice,” Lee said.

“He walked everywhere, he got fed everywhere and he’d lie in the middle of the street. I called him ‘meatloaf ’ because he was overweight,” Field said.

Tona Rankin knew Buddy before he was named Buddy.

“When they first got him, Rip called me and said, ‘I got Claudia something.’ I went over there and there was Buddy and he was so cute. I said what are you all going to name him? They had some stupid name like Bocephus and I said that ain’t no name for this dog. A couple days later I took him to the Circle K and everybody that saw him said, ‘Come here, little buddy.’ I went back and told Claudia and Rip that was going to be his name,” Rankin recalled.

“One time, me and Claudia were going around saying Buddy needs a job. I said he can deliver the newspaper. I was working at the Drift and they had this old mail slot in the door and I heard something drop through. Claudia bought a dog toy that looked like a rolled-up newspaper and said “The Doggy Daily” on it.

I said, ‘Oh my God, Buddy got a job.’ It was so funny. He was such a great dog,” Rankin said.

Bridge Tender Inn owner Fred Bartizal said, “I remember Buddy when he was a puppy. He was a fixture on Bridge Street. He would nap anyplace he wanted and people would walk around him. He was definitely an Island dog and everybody is going to miss him.”

Bradenton Beach Police Chief Sam Speciale said, “I’d drive down Bay Drive South every morning and Buddy would be walking up the road checking everybody out. He slept everywhere – people would put him in a wheelbarrow and bring him home. He was a mainstay of Bridge Street.”

Drift In manager Doreen Flynn said, “He was the real mayor of Bridge Street. He had his friends all over who fed him. Our customers loved him. I brought him a T-bone on Wednesday – that’s when I found out what happened.

His grave looks beautiful.”

Former Drift In bartender Jill Capparelli said, “He used to come over to the Drift for food.

He’d go see Brien at the trailer park. He’d go to Circle K and beg for hotdogs. He was a character.”

Red tide forecast remains high

High levels of red tide remain in waters around Anna Maria Island, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

The Nov. 9 FWC report shows high concentrations of red tide in water samples collected on Nov. 5 in the Gulf of Mexico at Longboat Pass boat ramp in Sarasota Bay, with medium concentrations at Cortez Beach in Bradenton Beach, the Rod and Reel Pier in Anna Maria and at School Key in lower Tampa Bay. No red tide was found at the Palma Sola Bay bridge.

Respiratory irritation was reported on Oct. 31, Nov. 2-3, Nov. 5-7 at Coquina Beach in Bradenton Beach and Oct. 31, Nov. 3 and Nov. 5-8 at Manatee Beach in Holmes Beach.

Red tide is a type of algae that emits a neurotoxin when it blooms. Deadly to fish, sea turtles, marine mammals and shorebirds that feed on affected fish, red tide makes shellfish unfit to eat, and can cause respiratory irritation in people, especially those with asthma, COPD or other respiratory diseases.

The toxic algae bloom has been spreading in the southwest Gulf of Mexico for the past year, reaching Anna Maria Island in early August. It was detected in Florida’s east coast waters cal reindeer, crafts, games, cookie decorating and snow. Santa arrives at noon to take pictures with children and hear what’s on their wish lists.

He’ll be escorted by the Manatee High School drum line.

Island garden begins producing

T

he new, yet to be named, Sandbar restaurant garden is located at the corner of Gulf Drive and Spring Avenue in Anna Maria. The garden is being designed by Zach Rasmussen, who works at the Sandbar as valet attendant and permaculture gardening specialist. Zach is using permaculture principles to design a garden that is going to grow soil that will be even healthier 10 years from now.

“My design philosophy would be that we must align ourselves through observation with the patterns and rhythms of nature, then try to replicate these ecosystems with intent to create a self-sustaining closed circle of beyond organic food production for our chefs and restaurants,” he said.

The garden is being carefully crafted so that all the plants contribute to the health of the garden. The garden is currently growing pigeon pea, papaya, Thai basil, Kaffir lime, allspice, moringa, roselle, Seminole pumpkin, heirloom okra, yucca, Scotch bonnet, blueberry, banana, Mexican sunflower, and collard greens. Of all the varieties growing, Chef Richard of the Sandbar is only harvesting Seminole pumpkin blossoms and heirloom okra.

The okra is doing especially well and the Sandbar chefs have been creating dishes that highlight this really great Southern staple.

• 1 Tbs. olive oil • ½ lb. okra, small whole okra is best • ½-1 jalapeno, de-seed and sliced • 2 Tbs. peanuts, crushed • 1 Tbs. molasses • 2 Tbs. cilantro, chopped • 1 pinch salt • 1 pinch pepper

Directions

Heat a pan over medium-high heat, until hot. Add olive oil to hot pan and immediately add the okra.

Sauté the okra for 4 minutes, allowing the skin to blister. Add the jalapenos to the okra and sauté for 1 more minute. Quickly add the peanuts, salt, and pepper and mix. Remove okra and jalapeno sauté from the pan and place onto a plate. Drizzle with the molasses and chopped cilantro.

Mexican sunflower, sun hemp, and pigeon peas, which are edible but not being harvested for food, are important components to the garden.

These plants capture nutrients, like nitrogen from the air and give that nitrogen back to the soil through composting.

Chef De Cuisine, Toffer Jacob, created an okra dish that blends his Southern culinary roots with Southeast Asia. He’s taken the heirloom okra and sautéed it with jalapenos, molasses, crushed peanuts and cilantro. The garden is still small, so the dish is only available a few nights a week. Just in case you can’t get it at the restaurant, Chef Toffer has provided a recipe.

White is not a defendant in the case, but attorney Robert Watrous wants to question him about his past

Tree removal pending This large tree, believed to be a ficus and located next to the Annie Silver Community Center in Bradenton Beach, will be removed soon to accommodate stormwater and drainage improvements taking place along Avenue C. In recent years the aging tree has been storm-damaged and some of its large branches have wound up in the street. A second tree will be removed from the alley between Gulf Drive and Avenue C, just north of 24th Street North. The previously-budgeted tree removals are not to exceed $14,800.

BRADENTON BEACH – Clear skies, minimal red tide and the sounds of music from the Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra (AMICCO) made for a perfect evening last Saturday. The all-inclusive tickets were sold out but there was room for people to bring their own chairs and enjoy the music and purchase refreshments.

As sun set, the crowd found seats and Bay News 9 Senior Anchor Al Ruechel welcomed everybody and gave credit to the many people who made the annual event successful. Symphony narrator Tom Aposporos introduced AMICCO Conductor Alfred Gershfeld, who retired this year but came back for this concert.

Then the beach came alive with a combination of patriotic, show tunes, opera and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" before intermission.

Afterward, the orchestra opened with the "El Capitan March," a tribute to the Armed Forces, and "The Prayer." Then came disco sounds and the audience members were on their feet, dancing and enjoying themselves.

During intermission, auctioneer Blake Kennedy took the microphone and sold off the four raffle packages. The amount raised was unavailable at press time. The fifth prize was an opportunity to lead the orchestra with the baton. The bid was split and both bidders agreed to pay the last highest bid amount.

First to conduct was Brenda Brunelle and second to conduct were Mrs. Thomas A. Smith and Mary Bell who co-conducted, courtesy of the bid by Thomas Smith.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the turnout for the event and success of the sixth annual Symphony on the Sand this past Saturday,” said Jeanie Pickwick, who chaired the Symphony on the Sand steering committee.

“The weather cooperated, the food was delicious, the music was unbelievable – with amazing highlights from guest vocalists, Michelle Giglio, Daniel Hoffman, Ashley Thunder Lowe and Russell Andrade. It was the perfect combination for a magical evening.”

The Anna Maria Oyster Bar provided waitstaff and the Sandbar, Harry’s Continental Kitchen, the Lazy Lobster, Hometown Desserts and the Coquina Beach Café supplied the food.

Symphony on the Sand is a collaboration of the Bradenton Convention and Visitors Bureau, AMICCO, and Manatee County. Sponsors include the Anna Maria Island Sun, the Bradenton Herald, and public radio stations WUAF and WSMR. “Many heartfelt thanks go out to our sponsors, the wonderful waitstaff, the Symphony on the Sand committee, Maestro Gershfeld for another incredible concert conducting the Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra, and most of all our great and generous patrons,” said Pickwick.

Adoption of amendment 2 means city commission candidates must be registered city voters and must provide at least three forms of proof of residency when seeking office: 427 voters (79.81 percent) supported the amendment and 108 (20.19 percent) opposed it.

Adoption of amendment 7 clarifies the city’s position that the charter requirements that apply to citizens’ pursuit of petition-initiated city ordinances and resolutions also apply to petition-initiated charter amendments: 320 voters (65.04 percent) supported the amendment and 172 (34.96 percent) opposed it.

City voters supported the city’s request to rezone Katie Pierola Park from its R-3 Multi-Family Dwelling District zoning designation to Parks/Recreation/Open Space: 474 voters (89.1 percent) supported the request and 58 (10.9 percent) opposed it.

So, you want to be a real estate investor

here’s only one thing trickier than real estate investing and that’s – well come to think of it, there isn’t anything trickier. When it comes to navigating the ins and outs of real estate investing there is so much to learn that pulling a rabbit out of a hat seems like child’s play.

There is a saying that true real estate wealth is based on cash flow, and that’s what investors, especially first-time investors, should aim for. Generating cash flow in a good, stable rental is more dependable than counting on a quick flip and appreciation.

If you’re purchasing a property that needs work, first determine if the improvements are for the purpose of renting or flipping. Obviously, rental property can be improved with simpler and lower end finishes. If you are buying to resell, check out comparable property for sale in the area and see what type of finishes are being offered.

Castles in the Sand LOUISE BOLGER The three most important factors when purchasing investment property is the cost to buy, the cost of improvements and how much you can sell or rent for after you renovate. Essentially, don’t over improve.

Determine the existing leases in place for rental properties and how that works for you. Go to the city departments to make sure there are not any road changes or new developments that can decrease the value of the property down the road.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Finding someone you trust could be the difference between a successful purchase

and a disaster. Interview property managers and real estate agents who are active in the area, but don’t use their input to make a final decision.

Be realistic when calculating your financials, and value your personal time in maintenance and paper work. There are always unforeseen costs when tackling a renovation – taxes and loss of a tenant or a sudden downturn in the market can really set you back. Also, be careful when screening tenants. Do a credit check and get references, if necessary. Start small and make sure you can pay the mortgage on your investment should you find yourself in that position.

Careful with neighborhoods that are transforming, it may or may not happen. Learn the market as thoroughly as you can, but it may be best to leave the more exotic purchases to experienced investors who can tolerate a downturn.

Set a targeted budget for your purchase, and don’t get off track. Remember

this is a business; don’t let your emotions rule your good sense. Education is the best way to keep emotions in check.

Probably the most important thing and the one that first-time investors always forget is to stick to your principles and don’t overbid to prove you know what you’re doing. Know when to pass and keep searching without any emotional attachment to what you lost.

All real estate is local, and that may be the best advice, especially for a new investor. Again, don’t make your decision based on the home you would like to live in, and forget about the potential for profit. It’s easy to confuse where you would live personally to where you should invest.

There’s no real trick to becoming a real estate investor, no rabbits to pull out of a hat and no ladies to be cut in half. The real trick is pretty straightforward: know the market and don’t let emotions get in the way. Good luck.

For his part, Linney said he couldn’t be happier with the outcome of his first foray into local politics.

“I’m very content with the outcome,” he said.

He said the experience was “one of the top three experiences of my life.” With one race under his belt, Linney said he’s ready to run for a commission seat next year and the mayoral seat again in the future.

“The people got to have a choice,” he said. “It was a perfect first run for me,” he added, noting

In the commission race, Commissioner Pat Morton was reelected, bringing in 36 percent of the votes. Morton was first elected to the commission in 2003. This

will be his eighth term.

The new commissioner on the dais will be Kim Rash who ended election night with 36 percent of the vote. Though Rash is no stranger to local politics, this will be his first term as commissioner.

Rash said his priority after the election was to thank the residents who supported him and his campaign.

“I just thank God, my family, especially my wife and Melissa (his daughter), my team, advisors and the voters,” Rash added. “I had a lot of people step up to the plate and support me. There’s been a tremendous outpouring of love for me and my family.”

Landing in the third spot is political newcomer and local real estate agent Don Purvis, who ended the night with 28 percent of the vote, just shutting him out of claiming one of the two available commission seats.

In the race for one of five positions on the newly-formed charter review board, eight candidates threw their hats in the ring – Jay Calhoun, Claudia Carlson, Nancy Deal, Major Leckie, Sean Murphy, Johnny Rigney, Edward Upshaw and David Zaccagnino. The five

who will be reviewing the city’s charter and determining what issues to place in front of voters in November 2019 as charter amendments are Claudia Carlson, Nancy Deal, Sean Murphy, Edward Upshaw and David Zaccagnino, the five candidates who brought in the majority of resident votes.

According to the Manatee County Supervisor of Elections Office, there are 2,810 registered voters across two precincts in Holmes Beach. Out of that number, 1003 voted either in person or by mail, representing 35.7 percent of eligible voters.

All of the winning candidates will be sworn in prior to the city’s organizational meeting which was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, however due to the Florida state elections with recall vote counts, City Clerk Stacey Johnston said the election local election results may not be certified until Nov. 29 at the earliest, delaying the swearing-in for elected candidates and the organizational meeting.

The AME Dolphin Dash is a 5k race through the streets of Holmes Beach. There is also a one-mile fun run for kids and adults.

S.W.A.T. networking director shares her story In honor of Breast Cancer awareness month, Janice Teeter shared her story of survival with the ladies at the Anna Maria Island chapter of SWAT Networking – Successful Women Aligning Together. Janice was diagnosed over 25 years ago with triple negative breast cancer. This cancer has no relation to estrogen, progesterone and no genetic markers.

The doctor said that it was from environmental sources. At the time, Janice explained, she had not been in any toxic environments and could not understand how this happened. The doctor replied that there are toxins in everything we used. Our dishsoap, shampoo, cleaning products. So Janice discarded all of those products and more from her home.

She had chemotherapy treatment and surgery.

After a long investigation she discovered Melaleuca, The Wellness Company. She turned her home into a more natural environment and became a distributor and advocate. Janice has now been cancer free for 25 years.

“It was a beautiful and moving story. Janice was so inspiring,” stated SWAT Networking’s CEO, Dr. Robyn Spirtas.

10/27, aggravated battery, Rod and Reel Pier, 875 N. Shore Drive. The victim was fishing with two friends. Two unidentified males and an acquaintance from high school approached them, and after some trash talking, one put on two sets of brass knuckles and started beating the victim. The three unknown males fled in a red SUV. 10/31, possession of drugs and paraphernalia, 875 N. Shore Drive. The officer saw a female sleeping on a bench and checked on her for her safety. He found out she was sleeping while her boyfriend was fishing on the Rod and Reel Pier.

11/8, giving false identity to a law enforcement officer, Bayfront Park, 300 N. Bay Blvd.

Two deputies were on patrol shortly after midnight in the park when they spotted a car in the parking lot and two females on a nearby bench. They told the females they were violating the law by being in the park after closing. The deputies asked the females for their IDs and one produced a driver’s license, but the other said she didn’t have her ID. They started walking toward the car in the lot, but they both denied ownership of the car. The female without ID gave the deputy a name. As one deputy checked out the information given by the females, they started moving away from the other. The computer found the name given by the one female was tied to an alias with three felony warrants attached. The females started to walk briskly away, and the deputies had to order them to stop. One of the females

attempted to flee again and was caught and handcuffed. She started screaming, prompting a neighbor to call the Sheriff’s Office. The computer finally produced a name for the one female and also tied the parked car to one of the females. The female who was screaming had alcohol on her. She was charged with disorderly intoxication and taken to jail.

11/1, theft from a vehicle, 2400 block of Avenue C. A laptop computer was stolen.

11/5, warrant arrest, Coquina Beach parking lot, 1900 Gulf Drive S. The deputy made contact with the defendant because his car was in the parking lot after hours. A computer search showed he was wanted in Sarasota County for domestic violence. The deputy smelled marijuana from the car and conducted a probable cause search. He found methamphetamines, a small amount of marijuana and a pipe. He was arrested.

11/5, criminal mischief, 10th Street South Groin. The defendant said she painted on the groin because she was having a bad day. She was given a notice to appear.

HOLMES BEACH

10/31, DUI, 800 Manatee Avenue. The officer stopped the driver for speeding and weaving. He noticed signs of possible intoxication and had her perform a field sobriety test and, as a result of her performance, arrested her.

11/1, driving with no license and a tag not assigned to the car, 600 Manatee Ave, The officer ran a random computer check on the car he was following, and it showed the license tag belonged on another car.

It also showed his driver’s license was

suspended. The plate was seized, the car was towed and he was given summonses for court appearances.

11/1, driving with s suspended license and no registration, 4200 SR789. The officer stopped the driver for not having a license tag on his pickup. His driver’s license was suspended, his truck towed and he was given a notice to appear.

11/3, noise violation, 200 block of Haverkos Court. The officer answered a complaint about a loud party and took decibel readings. He spoke to the homeowner and said it was a birthday party for her.

She apologized and said she would tone it down.

11/4, possession of cocaine and driving with a revoked license, 2800 Gulf Drive. The officer stopped the driver for weaving. The driver said he did not have his license with him and he was weaving because he had dropped his cell phone.

A computer check showed his license was revoked and he had been caught once before driving with a revoked license. He was arrested, his vehicle was inspected and the officer found a baggy of crack cocaine.

11/4, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, 800 Manatee Avenue. The officer stopped the driver for an inoperable headlight and found marijuana. He issed a ticket for the headlight and a code violation citation for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana.

11/5, noise violation, 307 65th Street. The officer answered a noise complaint and found that there had been a party but the man who rented the house had fallen and needed medical attention. He was taken to the hospital, and a report was made to code enforcement.

OBITUARIES Ann Senn Horne Ann Senn Horne, 86, of Anna Maria Island, Florida, passed away Nov. 10, 2018, surrounded by love, laughter and her devoted family.

Born in Bartow, Fla., Dec. 14,1931, to Thelma Keller and John (Jake) Washington Senn, she graduated from Summerlin Institute in 1950 and attended Newberry (S.C.) College.

Ann studied court reporting with Emily Mann and was Emily’s first student. Later, she founded Ann S. Horne Reporting Service in Bartow, which grew into an influential firm that is still respected by many in the legal community today. She retired in 1997 and moved fulltime to her island. Her love of Anna Maria Island began in the late ‘30s and continued until her last breath, where she loved every sunset.

She joined Lynn D. Horne in marriage in 1957, the two built homes in Bartow; Woodfin Mountain, N.C.; and Anna Maria Island and had a wonderful life together. Dynamite definitely comes in small packages. She loved her dogs, being surrounded by laughter and all manner of family, but she especially loved her boys.

She is dearly loved and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was an example to many. She and Lynn taught high school Seniors Sunday School at First Baptist Church in Bartow for 25 years and cherished the relationships those years of service provided them. When she retired to Anna Maria Island, she became very active playing golf, Bunco, volunteering for the Tour of Homes for the Island Community Center and was the matriarch of the Anna Maria Oyster Bars. She was the inspiration behind the national movement now known as “Put Your Mother to Work Day,” known to others as Mother’s Day, where she would spend the day handing carnations to mothers dining at the Anna Maria Oyster Bar Landside.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lynn D. Horne, Sr.; her beloved sons, Lynn D. Horne, Jr. (Sandy), and John Curtis Horne (Amanda); her four nieces, Debby (Bill), Kathy (Bubba),

Stephany (David) and Julie (Ed); her grandchildren, Nic (Stephanie), Jake Ann and Trey; and great-grandchildren Audrianna Ann and Trenton Horne.

Additionally, she was a surrogate mom to large crewes of her children’s friends who benefitted from her free spirit and wise advice, which was usually administered with vodka.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date to raise a glass to a life well-lived.

Ann knew the value of reading in young lives, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to our grade level reading program, “Dive Into Reading” in care of the Manatee Community Foundation, 2820 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton, Fl. 34205.

Margaret Allen Potter passed away July 3, 2018, at the age of 93. She had pursued her natural talent for art with classes at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Moore School of Design, and later Michigan State University and Lansing Community College. She went on to complete the Famous Artist Course in Commercial Art while raising four children. Peggy married Howard Spencer Potter in 1949. After vacationing on Anna Maria Island for many years they permanently moved to Holmes Beach in 1986 from East Lansing, Mich. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church Women and choir at Church of the Annunciation.

Peggy was a founding member of the Artists Guild of Anna Maria Island and served as president for many years. Her children and grandchildren remember her strength and unwavering love of family. She is survived by her two daughters, Tina Potter Evans (Dana) of Kingsley, Mich., and Megg Potter Faillace (Ralph) of Bradenton, Fla., and by her son, Howard Spencer Potter, Jr. (Corinne) of Sodus Point,

She also leaves a great granddaughter, Isabelle, and many nieces and nephews.

Sarah E. 'Betty' Schafer Sarah E. “Betty” Schafer, 93, of Defiance, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018 at Glenn Park of Defiance.

She was born on March 19, 1925 to Howard and Ida (Moore) Butler in Middletown, Ohio. On Sept. 16, 1944 she married John L. Schafer, who preceded her in death on Oct. 10, 2011.

Betty was a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She earned her associate’s degree and worked as a nurse at The Defiance County Home, and at Leisure Oaks until her retirement. Betty and John enjoyed their membership in The Defiance Squares square dancing club. She also enjoyed her Women’s Study League, flower gardening and baking cookies. She was a devoted wife and mother, and she loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Michelle (Charlie) Pfeiffer of Powhatan, Va., Melinda (Tony) Oliver of Tucson, Ariz., and Terri (Scott) Heller of Defiance; sons, John David "JD" Schafer of Tucson, Ariz., and Tom Schafer of Defiance. She leaves behind 13 grandchildren; David, Jesse, Dorothy, Mark, Michael, Emily, Kyle, Kelsey, Kaitlyn, Dylan, Eric, Jenny and Brett, and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Schafer, son Tim Schafer, brother Howard Butler, and sister Ruth Kenvin.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018 at Schaffer Funeral Home, with Deacon Mark Homier officiating. Burial followed the service at Riverside Cemetery.

When the fire department members were toned out on a potential extended time call, Lil would go to the Volunteer Station 3 and let dispatch know special services were available and everyone knew that if needed, their children were in good hands.

Elmo Torres Jr. Elmo Torres Jr., 72, of Bradenton, passed away on Oct. 10, 2018 at his home. Born Dec 7, 1945, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Elmo was a lover of all things in life, having greatly enjoyed his toys (several cars and boats) but his true joy and life's purpose was flying.

A graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Elmo was a pilot for Piedmont Airlines (and later US Airways), enjoying a 26-plus-year career as a commercial airline pilot until his retirement in the late 90s, coining the phrase, "You can never be too high in a 727." He lived on Anna Maria Island for a number of years, Elmo is survived by his children, Elmo III, Jose, Damaris, and Mario; sister, Madeline, and several nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held on Elmo’s birthday, Dec. 7, 2018. in Bradenton (exact location to be determined) as Elmo always enjoyed a good party. Planet Stone, Bins Be Clean, Sato Real Estate on top Youth soccer playoffs set, adults hit mid-season

In the final week of the youth soccer regular season Planet Stone finished in first place for the youngsters making up the eight- to 10-year-old league. Bins Be Clean found them on top for the 11- to 13-year-old league.

Both teams clinched a spot in the championship match on Wed., Nov. 14. Neither will know who their opponents will be until the semifinal play is completed at the 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. games that same night.

Planet Stone went head-to-head against Ugly Grouper last Tuesday night to start the evening’s action.

Ugly Grouper’s Cale Rudacille scored the only goal of the first game of the night for the eight- to 10-year-old youth soccer league in their victory against number one ranked Planet Stone.

Planet Stone stayed on the field for the week’s second game against Progressive Cabinetry. Despite having just played the previous game, the Planet Stone team still showed fire in its boots, taking the win with a goal at the 23rd minutes of the play by Ava Harlan. Just 36 seconds later the top team put the ball in the net for the second and final goal of the game.

In the older age group, Bins Be Clean finished the season with a loss and a tie, but its strong season play kept the team at the top of the rankings. Wash Family Construction, which finished second in the regular season, completedits night with a victory over Bins Be Clean.

The men and women who make up the co-ed adult soccer league finished their fourth game of the season last Thursday night, leading them into the second half of the regular season.

The three weeks of play prior saw tough competition and close scores among the teams. Week four was four blowout games, with players missing and mismatches.

Sato Real Estate showed its dominance on the pitch against Jiffy Lube with a 7-2 win, putting it neck and neck with Eason Builders.

The 8 p.m. game had Moss Builders facing Slim’s Place. At the end of 46 minutes of play, Moss Builders gained its second win of the season. Like Ross Built Construction, Slim’s Place looks forward to its first W next week.

All eight teams push forward toward the final games of the season in December, with the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup champion ship game on Dec. 20.

mid-August. On Sept. 25, Technomarine CEO Erik Sanderson sent Speciale an email that said the docks were delivered to a storage yard in Tampa.

Sanderson’s email included two photographs of the decking at its undisclosed location and no information on a subcontractor to install the floating dock next to the Bridge Street Pier.

During the Wednesday, Nov. 7, CRA meeting, City Attorney Ricinda Perry noted 10 days had passed since she sent Sanderson and his attorney, Roger Stanton, a letter notifying them the CRA was declaring Technomarine in default of the $119,980 contract agreed to in early 2017.

Perry’s letter gave Technomarine and additional 20 days to cure the contractual concerns before the CRA pursued legal action and/or asked the Florida Attorney General’s Office to investigate Technomarine’s business practices.

Sanderson and Technomarine are already named as defendants in multiple lawsuits, including a 2017 suit that resulted in a jury awarding a yet-tobe-paid $1.7 million judgement against Technomarine.

FOLLOWING A DIGITAL TRAIL

During last week’s meeting, some CRA members seemed resigned to the idea that the dock project might be dead in the water and need to be started again from scratch. But member Jake Spooner said he could not accept losing the money, $83,682, the CRA already paid Technomarine.

During public comment, it was suggested that before giving up and pursuing the alternatives, Speciale be asked to call all the marine storage yards in the Tampa area in hopes of finding the undelivered dock components.

Local contractor and marine contractor Billy Cahoon then told The Sun he might know where the dock sections were, based on a photograph he saw in the paper.

While the meeting continued, Cahoon was shown the photo Sanderson sent Speciale.

Because of the building in the background, Cahoon thought it might have been taken near the Gandy Bridge in Tampa, by Orion Marine Construction and the Hula Bay Club.

City Treasurer Shayne Thompson suggested checking the photograph’s metadata and digital properties for information on where it was taken. The metadata included the longitude and latitude where the photo

was taken, which is not always the case with digital photographs.

Using Google Earth, City Planner Alan Garrett retreated to his office and looked up the general longitude and latitude coordinates. Speciale then returned to his own office to research the exact GPS coordinates.

Using Google Earth, Speciale determined the longitude and latitude coordinates were slightly to the east and on the other side of Tampa Bay. When he zoomed in on the exact longitude and latitude, Speciale saw a white cabin cruiser sitting in an outdoor storage yard. When he rotated the view, he saw a building across the street that resembled the building in the photo Sanderson sent him.

That building is home to StorSafeStorage and using that address Speciale and CRA chair Ralph Cole drove to Gibsonton Thursday morning. They found the dock sections across the street sitting next to the cabin cruiser on the grounds of the Hecker Construction Company.

An employee told Speciale the dock sections were delivered two months ago and Hecker Construction has a verbal agreement with Technomarine to install the dock in Bradenton Beach.

tions, Speciale called The Sun and said, “We found our dock. We’re standing in front of it and touching it.”

In response to an email Speciale sent Sanderson later that day, Technomarine project manager Vinnie Frega confirmed the storage location – not knowing Speciale had already found it. In another email, Sanderson told Speciale the cleats and other hardware were still at Technomarine’s warehouse in North Palm Beach.

Speciale is still awaiting word on where the dock’s pontoon floats are located.

“It was good to see the dock. It’s in good shape. Now we have to go the next step and get it; and I think we will,” Cole said.

Speciale said he’s feeling “cautiously optimistic.”

Perry will prepare for CRA approval a release agreement that if accepted would relieve Technomarine of its remaining contractual obligations. The agreement would assure Sanderson and Technomarine that no additional legal or investigative remedies would be pursued if the dock materials and additional hardware are released to the CRA. Hecker Construction could then install the floating dock as planned, working directly with the CRA.
