CORTEZ – The Fifth Annual Stone Crab Festival was bigger and better, thanks to a cool breeze and mostly blue skies and plenty of those colorful claws from the Gulf and bay.

Festival organizer and Swordfish Grill General Manager Bob Slicker said they sold more than than 2,400 pounds of stone crab during the two-day event that had an estimated total attendance of 9,000 people.

ANNA MARIA –City Commissioner Dale Woodland recently praised Deputy Patrick Manning and his supervisor, Sgt. Russell Schnering, for a citation being issued to a vacation rental guest who received noise complaints on consecutive nights.

During the Oct. 27 commission meeting, Woodland referenced the monthly Code Enforcement and Parking Report included in the commissioners’ packets and he noted that the Sheriff’s Office received seven noise complaints between Sept. 16 and Oct. 18.

Woodland specifically referenced the noise ordinance citation issued after noise complaints were received on Saturday, Sept. 17, and Sunday, Sept.

18, regarding a five-bedroom vacation rental at 9405 Gulf Drive.

Commissioner’s wife arrested Commissioner Chuck Webb questions the timing of the arrest less than week before the conclusion of the city elections.

HOLMES BEACH – Flora Webb, the wife of Anna Maria Commissioner and commission candidate Chuck Webb, was arrested on burglary charges Thursday morning.

She is accused of burglary of an unoccupied structure and stealing a ream of copy paper worth $5 from the office of Dr. Scott Kosfeld and Island Family Physicians, which is located in the same two-story building at 3909 East Bay Drive where Flora Webb works at the Webb, Wells and Williams law firm.

Authorities say the alleged crime was captured on video surveillance on Friday, Oct. 21, and reported to the Holmes Beach Police Department on Wednesday, Nov. 2.

On Thursday, Nov. 3, Mrs. Webb was arrested at the law office, transported to the county jail and later released on bond.

The police report filed by Officer Steve Ogline states that between 7 p.m.

and 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 21, Flora Webb entered Kosfeld’s office, rummaged through several areas inside the office and left a few minutes later with the copy paper in hand. The report says she was able to unlock the door by unknown means.

“The victim provided me with a copy of a video he obtained from a surveillance camera he installed in the office after he recently starting having money turn up missing from his petty cash drawer. I viewed the video and can clearly see a white female with blonde hair going throughout the office looking in drawers and checking areas as if she was looking for something. The victim advised me that one of the drawers she opened was where he usually keeps petty cash, but he left it empty after having money missing two weekends in a row,” the report states.

Kosfeld identified the suspect as Flora Webb, and he told Ogline about another incident that took place in 2014 when he returned to his office after hours and found his front door unlocked and Mrs. Webb inside.

“She told him she found the door unlocked and was inside checking to make sure everything was alright. The

“Over the last several years we have noticed items missing from our office: rolls of stamps, reams of paper, medications off my desk and four weeks ago $100 from the petty cash drawer. The next weekend another $100 bill went missing. At no time have I ever given her permission to enter my office after

hours,” Kosfeld’s handwritten statement says.

MCAT makes route adjustments Manatee County Area Transit has made changes in some of its routes. The changes, which will take effect Nov. 12, will affect service to and on Anna Maria Island in two areas. First, trolley service will operate every 30 minutes until 7:30 a.m., and then revert to 20 minutes after than.

Second, Route 6 that operates on Cortez Road will operate between Coquina Beach and DeSoto Station every 60 minutes.

The Sun celebrates the lives of the three surviving Cortez veterans of WW II.

CORTEZ – The 66 Cortezians who fought for their country will be honored at the Cortez Cultural Center’s Tribute to Veterans on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 1-4 p.m. at the center, 11655 Cortez Road W. Cortezians will be modeling historic military uniforms that belonged to Cortez veterans, and visitors will enjoy a free fish fry and children’s games. They are also asked to bring a side dish if they can.

One or more of the three surviving Cortez veterans who fought in World War II also may be on hand for the celebration – Albert Few Jr., and Cleve Adams and C.D. Adams, two of six brothers who served.

His dad, “Tater” Few, was a Cor-

tez fisherman, but Albert G. “Little Spud” Few Jr. cared more about planes than boats.

“I signed up the day after Pearl Harbor and went into the Air Force aviation cadet program,” Few said at his Bradenton retirement home. “In October 1942, they sent me to North Africa and we did missions against the Germans for Montgomery’s English army.

We lost about 30 percent of our men the year I was there.”

Few flew “83 or 84 missions” in P-40 Warhawks and P-51 Mustangs over North Africa, Sicily and Italy, strafing and bombing German troops.

Later, in the reserves, he flew F-86 Sabre jets for four or five years, teaching others how to fly.

He became an aerospace engineer and worked on the design and development of the Saturn V missile program with rocket scientist and ex-Nazi Dr. Wernher von Braun at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., after von Braun surrendered to

The big war, World War II, had just ended, and a lot of us kids in Cortez were waiting for our dads to come home from that awful war. Now, I was a war baby, born Sept. 19,1941, just a couple months before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. I remember well where I was at when my dad, Raymond Stargel Pringle, came home. He looked so cool in his starched khaki uniform with the sergeant stripes on his sleeve.

My mom and so many others of the moms worked and slaved to keep our families together and fed.

I recall going out to the “Kitchen” with mom to harvest scallops along with a lot of other Cortez kids and their moms. The Kitchen is the flats just off to the left of Cortez in Sarasota Bay looking toward the southeast at what is now known as Coral Shores. The flats is a term the Cortez fishermen use to describe the shallow

water seagrass beds; the scallops somehow thrive in the seagrasses.

During that time scallops were so plentiful, it was hard to walk in the water without stepping on them.

It seemed they flourished in these crystal clear waters.

All the moms would take the mullet skiffs out with us kids in tow to pick up scallops. Now, to explain, the mullet skiff is a nonmotorized shallow-drafted wooden boat the commercial fishermen use to put their nets in. They would pole their nets out with a poling oar, a long, 16-18-foot piece of wood that was fashioned into a long oar My granddad, Nash Pringle, made poling oars for many years. The fishermen towed their mullet skiff behind the launch or scooter. Well now I’ll explain, the launch or scooter. It is the vessel that has an in-board motor in it; most were open, but some had cabins or a tarp covering it from stem to stern to protect from the hot sun. They were used to tow the mullet skiffs. The fishermen

would work together in crews to be able to catch fish better. I will explain this way of fishing in a later article.

Now, back to us kids and our moms scalloping. Our dads made scallop boxes that we used when the tide was high. The scallop box was a waterproof wooden frame with a clear pane of glass in the bottom of the box that would float in the water. The moms could see plainly the bottom and also find the scallops a lot easier on high tide. My wife, Janet, and I donated the only one that I know in existence to the Cortez Museum several years ago, and somehow it is at the Taylor Boat House at the end of 123rd Street West. Hopefully it has not been lost.

All of us kids had a total blast in the Kitchen, swimming and chasing the girls with crabs or other creepy crawlers. Moms would scold us sternly. We spent some of our time picking up scallops see REMEMBERING, page 29

Vincent sets funding record Combined, Bill Vincent and John Chappie raised more than $12,000 in the race for the only contested City Commission seat.

BRADENTON BEACH – It was not known at publication time whether Bill Vincent won or lost the Nov. 8 election for the Ward 4 Bradenton Beach City Commission seat, but win or lose he is believed to have set a city record for campaign fund raising.

As of Nov. 3, Vincent, a Pines Trailer Park resident and first-time candidate, had reported $7,626 in campaign contributions and $7,354 on campaign expenditures.

At the conclusion of that same reporting period, his opponent, former Mayor John Chappie, had received $4,615 in contributions and had spent $4,436 on his bid to rejoin the City Commission after spending the last eight years as a county commissioner.

As of Nov. 3, the two candidates combined had received $12,241 and spent $11,790, making this the most expensive city commission race in recent city history. Chappie and Mayor Bill Shearon said last week they could not recall a city race in which more money was raised or spent.

In the summer and fall of 2015, then-Mayor Jack Clarke raised and spent $6,258 on his reelection bid. Shearon, who was trying to regain the mayor’s seat he lost during the recall election earlier that

Combined, Clarke and Shearon spent $9,247 on a race that ended in an exact tie. Shearon was then declared the winner of the race after drawing the infamous ace of clubs that bested the 10 of clubs drawn by Clarke.

In 2013, Shearon spent $1,800 on his first successful bid for the mayor’s office, compared to the $1,200 spent by incumbent Mayor John Shaughnessy.

Key contributors

Vincent currently serves on the city’s Scenic Waves Committee, and his contributions included $500 from

Scenic Waves Committee chair Tjet Martin and $100 from committee member Bona Wortman. He also received $500 from Bradenton Beach Planning and Zoning Board member John Metz and another $500 from Metz’s wife, Leeann.

Other contributors included Bradenton Beach Marina President Mike Bazzy, $500; The Pines Trailer Park, $200; Marie Pracht, $1,000; and Barbara Hug, $250. Many of Vincent’s smaller contributors listed out of state addresses, but are seasonal residents of the trailer park.

Much of Chappie’s support came from the local business community. Donors included Island Time Lodge LLC, $500; resort owner and realtor David Teitelbaum, $500; hotelier Danny Canniff, $500; Silver Surf Gulf Beach Resort, $500; Bridgewalk Partners LLC, $500; WELD Inc./Sandbar restaurant, $250; and The Pines Trailer Park, $100.

Chappie supporters who serve as appointed board members or elected officials included Scenic Waves Committee member Betty Rogers, $200; Planning and Zoning Board chair John Burns, $100; and County Commissioner Carol Whitmore, $100.

In the city of Anna Maria, first-time candidate Brian Seymour reported raising $2,000 and spending $1,940 as of Nov. 3. Seeking reelection, incumbent Commissioner Chuck Webb raised $212 and spent $173.50. Incumbent Commissioner Nancy Yetter raised $200 and spent $78 on her campaign.

EDITORIAL A veteran's holiday

W

hen I signed up for the Marines during the Vietnam war, I knew I would be facing weeks of hard boot camp training followed by a high likelihood of ending up in Southeast Asia.

I was right.

The training was laborious, and I was tested to extremes, both mentally and physically. Emotionally, I was alright.

I was not married or tied to a woman other than my mother and grandmother who lived together in Colorado and they were my emotional anchor. My brother, also a Marine, was stationed a couple hundred miles away, near the Demiliarized Zone. He paid a visit to me while we were there, and it was great seeing family.

It brought us closer forever, As we celebrate Veteran's Day, so close to Thanksgiving and the holidays beyond, it is natural to think about our men and women stationed near the fighting overseas. It seems that we have never stopped fighting since I returned home.

We will remember our protectors during the holidays, and we wish all of them the best. We know they will be thinking of home, spouses, children and family as they perform their duties. Many of them will celebrate Christmas in a land where it is a curiosity to those who live there.

While we know they will be thinking of home, they will have each other to share the experience.

I noticed an ad on television recently where an African American woman soldier sat down with her fellow troops at a table overseas and said, "You're my family tonight."

It was true when I spent Christmas in Vietnam. Those fellow fighters were my family, and we were all wrapped in a blanket together – the blanket of being Americans, fighting for the same cause. We were white, we were black, we were Hispanic, Arabian and we were the product of our genetic background.

But most of all, we were Americans who would fight for their country and, hopefully, when we returned to our homes, we would retain those bonds with our fellow veterans and be more understanding of people from other ethnic backgrounds because we are Americans.

Paid parking would help My wife and I have been going to your beautiful Island for more than six years. We have always stayed at one of the resorts right on the beach, but last year we had a few incidents where people coming to the Island for the day would come to our room and ask to use the rest room or just go in the bushes right near the beach.

With the large parks on the Island, everyone has access so you would not be denying anyone by making paid parking on the streets the norm.

It really does make sense to do this.

It is pretty obvious that you are going to have to do womething soon.

Veteran celebration set

As it has in the past, CrossPointe Fellowship is hosting its Community BBQ Honoring Veterans on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the church grounds at 8605 Gulf Drive, in Holmes Beach.

Everybody is welcome to this free event. Lunch will be provided, including BBQ pork and chicken with all the fixin’s. There will be live music from Micah Sandowich and Band, Manatee High and Anna Maria Elementary School. Also on tap will be fun and games for the kids and a round of Anna Maria Island Jeopardy.

This year’s guest is Captain Guy Gruters, a Vietnam veteran who was a POW for five years. Before his capture, he flew more than 400 combat missions and he is the recipient of more than 30 combat awards including two Silver Stars, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.

District seeks two grants West Manatee Fire Rescue commissioners recently approved a motion to seek two grants from the Assistance to Firefighters Act grant program. The grant allows fire departments to apply for funds for equipment and training.

One grant would be to replace the self-contained breathing apparatus, and the other would be to pay the cost of paramedic training for firefighters, which is $5,000 per person. Both grants pay 90 percent.

ANNA MARIA – On Monday, Oct. 31, the city of Anna Maria received two more Bert Harris claims, the first claims received since Sept. 29.

The claims are for adjacent vacant lots at 146 Crescent Dr., owned by Crescent Cottages I LLC, and 142 Crescent Dr., owned by Crescent Cottages II LLC. A letters contained in the claim package list Keith Carter as the manager for the property at 142 Crescent Dr. and Mike Stringer as the manager for the property at 146 Crescent Dr. Carter’s claim lists $245,744 in assessed lost value associated with the proposed construction of a sixbedroom vacation rental that has not yet been built.

Stringer’s claim lists $249,400 in assessed lost value for a six-bedroom vacation rental that has not yet been built.

The city has only received two previous claims for undeveloped properties. One of those property owners received a settlement offer from the city; the other did not because the property is considered to be unbuildable lot according to city codes.

Bert Harris claims have been filed for these two vacant lots on Crescent Avenue. received pertained only to the occupancy limits contained in the vacation rental ordinance the city adopted in November 2015. Unlike those claims, the two claims filed on Oct. 31 also reference the city ordinances adopted last November that pertain to habitable area and to swimming pools and hot tubs counting as impervious surfaces when calculating the allowed lot coverage.

As of last week, City Attorney Becky Vose had not yet reviewed the newest claims or presented proposed settlement offers to the City Commission.

HOLMES BEACH – The city received two more Bert Harris claims on Nov. 2, both from the Najmy Thompson law firm.

One was for 211 54th St. It states that the before condition of the property is an eight-bedroom, two-story residence that can accommodate 19 guests and that ordinance 15-12 restricts it to a lower occupancy. It claims a loss of $395,000.

The second one was at 4804 Gulf Drive. It states the before condition is a six-bedroom, two-story residence that can accommodate 16 guests and that ordinance 15-12 restricts it to a lower occupancy. It claims a loss of $270,000.

Ordinance 15-12 calls for a maximum of four bedrooms in single-family homes and two per side in duplexes in the R-2, R-3 and R-4 zoning districts.

The city’s previous Bert Harris claims include 306 Clark Drive, $84,600; 128 49th St., $351,000; 7003 Holmes Blvd., $106,000; 214 54th St., Units A and B, $730,000; 307 66th St., Unit A, $345,000; 113 36th St., Unit B, $210,000; 309 65th St., Unit B, $275,000; 106 75th St., $225,000; 205 N. Harbor Drive, $195,000; 206 N. Harbor Drive, $345,000; 316 63rd St., $105,000; 301 74th St., $195,000; and 7003 Holmes Blvd., second claim, $235,000.

Niche businesses ID tourist tax evaders Vacation rental owners avoiding paying resort taxes and "tourists" renting rooms, then subletting them at a profit, are targets of several new businesses.

New companies are finding a niche responding to concerns that short-term rental owners using online vacation rental sites like Airbnb, VRBO, Home Away and the new, diversity-based Innclusive don’t necessarily pay resort taxes.

The companies identify tax-evading hosts and guests and charge clients – like property owners, condominium association managers and municipalities – for the information, Michele Schulz, director of field services and collections for the Manatee County Tax Collector’s Office, told the Manatee County Tourist Development Council at its October meeting.

Host Compliance, https://hostcompliance.com, advertises that local governments can “quickly and cost-effectively identify and bring non-permitted vacation rentals into compliance, while maximizing tax collections and effectively addressing neighbor concerns.”

Municipalities can purchase continuously updated lists of short-term rental

property addresses, get help bringing short-term rentals into zoning and permit compliance, get IDs of property owners who fail to report or who under-report resort taxes and get a 24/7 staffed telephone and e-mail hotline for neighbor complaints, according to the website.

SubletAlert, www.subletalert.com, advertises that it monitors vacation rental sites daily and notifies users when someone rents a unit, then illegally sublets it to someone else, a growing trend.

BNBShield, www.bnbshield.com, advertises that it will catch tenants illegally re-renting rentals.

The non-profit Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage (F.I.S.H.) organization has a Boatworks open-shop program that offers opportunities for volunteers of any skill level to participate in the renovation, repair and rebuilding of wooden and fiberglass boats.

CRA Committee to be expanded Two of the new members will be appointed on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

BRADENTON BEACH – The city’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Committee will soon be expanded from five to seven members, with four new members joining the committee in the next month or so.

The winner of the John Chappie/Bill Vincent Ward 4 City Commission race will automatically assume the CRA seat currently held by Commissioner Jan Vosburgh.

In December, city commissioners will appoint a Ward 2 resident to fill the city commission seat currently held by Vice Mayor Ed Straight. That person will then automatically become a member of the CRA Committee that will have to also appoint one of its members to succeed Straight as the CRA chair.

The five member CRA Committee, seated on the dais, will soon be supplemented by two additional committee-appointed members. representative of a business or businesses located in the CRA district that extends from the Cortez Bridge to Fifth Street South. This member does not have to be a resident of the CRA district or the city of Bradenton Beach. The other non-elected member will be a city resident who lives in the CRA district.

The non-elected members will serve a maximum of two full four-year terms,

but one will serve an abbreviated first term in order to stagger the terms and bring one into concurrence with the mayoral elections that take place every two years.

The city clerk’s office is accepting applications for these positions, but the deadline to apply is Wednesday, Nov. 9.

It was decided at the Nov. 2 CRA meeting that the two new non-elected members would be appointed by the current committee members during the Wednesday. Nov. 16, CRA meeting that will take place after the city elections but before the winner of the Vincent-Chappie race is sworn into office.

During public input at the Nov. 3 city commission meeting, Vincent said the appointments of the non-elected committee members should be delayed until the new commission is seated. He also believes the new CRA chair must be one of the five city commission members.

Vincent has already applied for consideration as the resident appointee if he’s not elected to the city commission.

Webb then explained that his law firm filed a lawsuit against Kosfeld and his wife, Erin, in April seeking payment of $48,525 in legal fees and $13,580 in accrued interest for legal services provided when the Kosfelds’ home was being foreclosed on in 2010.

“After an extreme amount of work, we reached a favorable settlement, and they were able to modify their mortgage and keep their house. While we were doing the case, he tells me he can’t pay his bill, so I carried him for about two and a half years. His bill is $63,000. He refuses to pay it,” Webb said.

An affirmative response filed by attorney John Harllee in May claims the Kosfelds never entered into an enforceable financial agreement with Webb in regard to attorney fees and a line of credit.

Harllee has asked the court to declare the attorney fees “excessive and unreasonable” and he contends the Kosfelds are not obligated to pay the $63,000. Webb

Chuck Webb City commissioner disagrees and the lawsuit remains unresolved.

When asked why his wife was inside Kosfeld’s office after hours, Webb said, “She was given a key to the office. The offices here lend paper to each other all of the time.

Flora is a patient of Dr. Pelham, which is Kosfeld’s partner, so there has been a long and friendly relationship between Flora and their staff.”

Webb said they will fight the charges.

Additional investigation

A follow-up report filed by Det.

Sgt. Brian Hall on Friday provides additional details. It says Kosfeld was concerned about the pending litigation between himself and Webb, and that is why he wanted to speak with his attorney before contacting the police.

Hall’s report notes Kosfeld’s concerns about possible HIPPA law violations regarding the privacy of patients’ medical records and mentions another incident that occurred about a year and a half ago when Mrs. Webb was found inside Dr. Paul Barrese’s office by a front desk receptionist who comes in on weekends to clean. Barrese’s office is in the same building as Kosfeld’s and Webb’s and the locks to his office were then changed. The office manager at Island Family Physicians told Hall that several years ago, there was a master key that allowed entry into the building and some of the individual offices.

“It is possible the defendant has one of these keys. It was never common practice to share office supplies between offices and the defendant would never have been issued a key to the doctor’s office,” Hall’s report states.

After reading the report, Webb said, “This will be fully investigated. The facts stated are not accurate or complete.”

The CRA Committee determines how CRA funds are spent and which CRAfunded projects are pursued. A portion of the tax revenues collected from commercial and residential properties in the CRA district are set aside from the city’s general fund for use in the CRA district only.

Recently approved CRA expenditures include the pending day dock replacement, the pending replacement of the main air conditioning unit for the cityowned structure leased to the AMOB

restaurant and additional weekend policing on Bridge Street.

The committee has expressed unanimous support for expanding the CRA district to include a significant portion of the navigable waters south of the Historic Bridge Street Pier. This would allow CRA funds to be used to pay the police department to conduct marine patrols of the anchorage using the city’s police boat. The committee has also expressed unanimous support for installing a permanent boat lift at the pier for the police boat that currently has to be trailered to a boat ramp to be placed in the water.

During last week’s meeting, the committee also approved the new CRA bylaws drafted by City Attorney Ricinda Perry.

Neighborhood Watch training Holmes Beach Police Chief Bill Tokajer invites residents of the community to participate in a Neighborhood Watch training in commission chambers in city hall at 5801 Marina Drive on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Tokajer said it is one of the most effective and least expensive ways to prevent crime and reduce fear. It also forges bonds among area residents; helps reduce burglaries, robberies and thefts from vehicles; and improves relations between law enforcement and the community.

“Stopping crime is everyone's business,” Tokajer stressed. “If you do your part in neighborhood crime prevention, you'll be doing yourself and your community a big favor.”

All Holmes Beach residents can participate and learn how to make their homes more secure, watch out for each other and the neighborhood and report activities that raise their suspicions.

This play returns to the stage by popular demand to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of artsHOP. The play runs from Nov. 10 to 20.

Director, James Thaggard once again directs this wonderful whodunit. Three of the most charming killers you’ll ever meet freely admit that they dun it and why, in comic tales about revenge, blackmail, jealousy and justice at Florida’s Riddle Key Luxury Retirement Village.

Symphony on the Sand at Coquina Gulfside Sun, sand, surf and the sounds of the symphony –what’s not to love?

The Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus & Orchestra will present its fourth annual Symphony on the Sand on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the beach at Coquina Gulfside Park, 2650 Gulf Drive S., Bradenton Beach.

“This exciting tradition is a fabulous event,” Maestro Alfred Gershfeld said.

This competition pairs youth teams with local business sponsors to raise funds to support Keep Manatee Beautiful’s programs and events. Teams and the public are invited to the free clinics by Team Sandtastic on Nov. 17 and 18 from 5 to 6 p.m. to learn the tips, tricks and techniques of sand sculpting.

On Nov. 19, teams will begin arriving at 8 a.m. to get first pick of the 15-by-15 foot plots. Sculpting commences at 9 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m. Judging the sculptures of each theme from 1

to 2 p.m. will include Master Sculptors with Team Sandtastic. The sand sculptures will stay in place for the public to view until Dec. 12.

Dock proposals to be opened Monday The deadline for contractors to submit proposals to replace the public day dock next to the Historic Bridge Street Pier is 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 14. The proposals received will then be opened in a public setting inside the commission chambers at 10:30 a.m. The proposals will be reviewed by Pier Team members Sam Speciale, Steve Gilbert and Tom Woodard. At a later date, the Pier Team will present itscontractor rankings and a recommended contractor to the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA).

The city’s portion of the project will be paid for using CRA funds. The city is still awaiting Manatee County Commission approval on a funding request for up to $125,000 matching funds generated by the county’s resort tax.

Some thoughts for Thanksgiving

ell fellow foodies and winos, another year has passed, and it's time once again to gorge ourselves at one of my favorite meals of the year, Thanksgiving. I have never understood why most of us save this holiday for one of my favorite meals, a juicy turkey dinner. I guess the reason I enjoy it so much are the multitudes of options available for preparing it.

Over the years, I have had the pleasure of enjoying my turkey oven roasted, grilled (whether it be gas, charcoal or a wood fire), deep fried, smoked and even cooked in the ground under a roaring fire. Some came out a little better than others, but all were interesting and different for lots of reasons.

The best part of the meal for me however, was the variety of sides available to pair with the, hopefully, juicy turkey. Most everyone has their favorite mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauces or relishes and vegetable choices. The one thing I've found that varies more from house to house than anything else though is the stuffing, or dressing, depending on where you're from.

I have tried lots of different kinds of dressing, pairing lots of ingredients to varied degrees of success, but there are a few that were consistently popular. The one I was raised on is still one of my favorites – a basic cornbread stuffing, loaded with sweet, caramelized onions, enhanced by the addition of fruit and nuts. Having been raised up North, my family more often than not used fresh cranberries and chopped walnuts for our stuffing. I always thought that the cranberries added a hint of tartness to balance out the sweeter cornbread and onion flavors.

My grandma, Nana Basley, being of German descent, always insisted on a bottle of medium dry riesling to enhance her Thanksgiving feast. We were allowed a taste or two of wine with our meal, and I always thought they went together well. After years in the wine trade, I finally learned why – the acidity and fruit flavors of the riesling paired well with her dressing and gravy. It is still my wine of choice when we make this dressing.

We used to spend some of our Thanksgivings with my Uncle Eddie and Aunt Rachel, who was of Italian descent. Her dressing of choice was a sausage stuffing, something I only had at her house (my Nana would never consider such a thing). I remember enjoying the combination of spicy sausage with the unusual addition (to me) of diced apple, and they balanced each other out wonderfully.

At their house we always had bottles of

Chianti, usually the ones in their basket wrapping, easy drinking sangiovese at its best. It paired well with not only the roast turkey and the sausage stuffing, but also the antipasto and the lasagna, and the other umpteen courses they had at their feast (boy could they eat!)

Fast forward a dozen years to my time spent in Charleston, S. C. It was there that I was introduced to low country cuisine, as it is called, a multitude of foods that I had never tried before, things like grits and oysters.

It is also where I first became a sommelier at a place called Kiawah Island, working in their fine dining and gourmet rooms. Oyster roasts were a common occurrence at the resort for vacationing groups, and my first Thanksgiving there gave me the opportunity to try oyster dressing.

In a large sauce pan, heat 5 Tbs. of olive oil over medium high heat. Add onion, celery, and fennel and give a good stir; reduce heat to medium and sweat until translucent. Add diced apples and sausage and cook for 7-8 minutes. Set aside. Toast bread cubes in a 350º oven for 12 minutes. In a large bowl, whisk three eggs with chicken stock; add bread cubes, vegetable/sausage mixture and spices. Give a good toss, moistening bread, then turn out into a casserole and bake for 40 minutes at 350º. Let rest for 30 minutes before serving. flair to your turkey feast. Paired with either a chardonnay, buttery and oaky or unoaked if you prefer a more fruit forward style, or a pinot noir if you prefer a red with your roasted meat. I would lean towards a Washington state or Oregon pinot noir for that earthy style instead of the fruitier style of their southern neighbors in California.

So whichever dressing you choose, and with whichever wine you decide to pair it, I wish that you, your family, and your company enjoy your holiday. And until next time ...

all showed up early this year, at least the weather did. While the fishing hasn’t responded to the cooling water, some of the season’s best fishing is surely right around the corner. As cooler fronts start to pass through the area and water temperatures drop significantly, schools of bait will migrate to nearshore waters.

Pelagic species like king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, false albacore, cobia and triple tail won’t be far behind.

Savvy anglers will be ready for the season. If you haven’t gotten tackle in order, don’t delay and keep an eye to the sky for diving birds and feeding fish. All of these species can be found right off our Gulf beaches and some like cobia, Spanish mackerel and tripletail will enter the bays as well.

These predators will take live bait, lures or flies and can be caught on spinning, bait casting or fly tackle.

With the exception of king mackerel and cobia, most are able to be landed

Depending on the species you’re targeting, rig accordingly. Since it’s possible to encounter all of them in any outing, multiple outfits are a good idea.

One of the main considerations when rigging will be whether to use wire, monofilament, long shanked hooks or a combination. Under the right conditions, it makes sense to rig with wire for toothy species like kingfish and Spanish mackerel.

It’s possible to catch a kingfish without wire, but your odds aren’t good.

The same applies with certain exceptions to Spanish mackerel. Mackerel

A school of little tunny slash through baitfish during a Fall feeding frenzy. can sometimes shy from wire. That is the time to switch to a long shank hook or a heavy (60 pound) monofilament leader. It’s still possible to get cut off, but you’ll get more action. When using wire an 8- to 12-inch trace can be tied to monofilament using an Albright Special knot (best) or a swivel. If you use a swivel use a black one to prevent fish from mistaking it for baitfish.

Shallow water fishing for snook, trout and reds and trout and blues on deep grass flats is improving as the water cools down.

Greg Rogers, from Tampa, fished deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay with me on Monday. Action wasn’t fast, but he had steady action with trout, ladyfish and a bluefish on Ultra Hair Clouser flies.

Tim Graham, from Nokomis, and Pat Redmond, from Sarasota, fished Gaspa-

rilla Sound near Boca Grande with me on Tuesday. They caught and released numerous snook, trout and a red on CAL jigs with shad tails. Action was good with snook in shallow water.

Joe Koss, from New York, fished deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay with me on Wednesday. He had a great day catching and releasing numerous trout, a bluefish and a pompano on an Ultra Hair Clouser fly. We spent some time in skinny water where he caught and released snook and a nice red on my Grassett Flats Minnow fly to complete his slam. Great job!

I look for action in the coastal Gulf with false albacore (little tunny) and Spanish mackerel to take off as the water cools down and baitfish school up along the beaches. Tripletail should also show up since stone crab traps are now in the coastal Gulf, increasing the amount of available structure for them.

Wire is less likely to deter a bite under low light conditions like early mornings, late afternoons and on overcast days.

One of the most effective ways to find schooling fish in the fall is to look for surface action and diving birds in the nearshore Gulf waters. Predators can also be lurking around hard bottom, reefs and wrecks. When you find feeding fish you

can approach them by trolling, drifting or with the use of a trolling motor. Whatever method you employ never pass through or get too close to the action. Get too close and they are likely to sound and move away. The best bet is to stay away from the school, but within casting range.

If trolling, make wide turns so only your lure passes through the action.

Live bait anglers target schooling fish in a number of ways. By anchoring up current from an area that’s holding fish, anglers can deploy a chum bag and then toss wounded live baits to draw fish into casting range. This can be an extremely

effective method. Those that prefer artificial lures find spoons particularly effective as well as jigs like the DOA CAL or the Berkley Gulp. One of the most exciting type of lures are top water plugs like the MirroLure Top Dog, the Heddon Zara Spook and the Rapala Saltwater Skitter Pop. Not only is the strike visual and often explosive, but the noisy lures can attract target species.

Fly fishing is also an effective and exciting way to target fall pelagics from cobia to triple tail, Spanish mackerel and even kingfish. The same rigging applies and top water flies like the Crease fly or

Garthside Gurgler can produce some memorable strikes. Clouser Deep Minnows are also a great choice for Spanish mackerel and false albacore. This would be a good time of the year to have a 10 or 11 weight rod rigged with a big black fly should a cobia make an appearance.

Whatever your fishing style, take advantage of the great action you’ll find in area waters this fall. If you’re new to the game, consider hiring a guide. This is a great way to learn the ropes and a great value when shared with a friend. Good fishing!

Cleveland Thomas Adams enlisted in the Navy in 1940 with his friend, Bridger Watson Jr., of Bradenton, and was assigned to the battleship U.S.S. Pennsylvania, stationed with the fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

On Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese launched a sneak attack on the fleet, he was transporting Catholic sailors from the ship to Mass

as the first bombs began to drop.

He thought they were U.S. fighter planes on practice runs, but that they were too close to the fleet for safety, his sister, Doris Green, recalled in her book, “Fog’s Comin’ In.” When he arrived back at the ship, he found the Pennsylvania badly damaged but still floating, and his friend lying on the dock, the first war casualty from Bradenton.

Adams later was injured by flak when his ship was attacked by the Japanese.

At 96, he is retired in California.

Clyde Dillard Adams was forced to parachute from his B-17 bomber after it was shot down early in the war.

As he was trying to dig up turnips to eat, German farm women armed with pitchforks captured him, and he was held as a prisoner of war by the German army for seven years.

After the war in Europe ended, he was released and returned home to Cortez on leave before shipping out to the Pacific. While he was home, the Japanese surrendered and the war in the Pacific ended.

On V-J Day, as his family gathered around the radio at their home in

Cortez to hear President Harry Truman’s speech, Green recalled that Adams stood alone in the kitchen, at attention, tears streaming down his face, staring out the window.

Adams, 93, is retired in Sebastian, Fla. The Cortez Cultural Center, operated by the Cortez Village Historical Society (CVHS), features a growing military collection, one of several collections focused on life in the historic fishing village. but the rest of the time, we romped and played. The moms would fill the skiffs with scallops that were just the beginning of the hard work. They would come home and open scallops for hours and put them in different size containers. Now, I don’t want to offend anyone, but the moms would sell the scallops to the Yankees that came from the North for vacation. It is so sad to see the bay get so polluted now-a-days, that the scallops have almost disappeared.

Now, back to when dad came home. I was playing in the back yard of the house my family, and I lived in directly behind my grandmother, Loney Pringle’s house. I was playing with one of my closest friends, Carl “Trigger” Mora.

I looked up when I saw a man in a crisp uniform walking through my grannie’s yard coming towards me. I realized it was my dad! I didn’t wait to go around to the gate so I climbed over that six-foot fence and ran yelling at the top

of my voice in glee! I can still recall the hug and the excitement that I felt, even though I was only five years old.

I feel I should explain my heritage in Cortez. My grandmother had three sisters and all but one lived in Cortez; Lulu, Leatha, and Leala, my great aunts. Leatha was Thomas “Blue” Fulford’s mom, Leala was Alcee “Boogie” Taylor’s mom. I think that I am kin to everybody in Cortez. Ralph “Pig” Fulford and I were talking one day, and we figured out that I was kin to him and his wife. Ralph ran the Fulford Fish Company for many years; he was one of Tink Fulford’s sons. My, the stories that I have to tell of my little part of heaven named Cortez. Hopefully I can get some of them told correctly.

I have reminisced many times of that conversation; I guess it was one of the good old times!

The war was over and things started getting back to a normal routine of Cortez commercial fishermen going to work, supplying fresh wholesome seafood to people all over the world. The people living in the war ravaged places were desperate and starving.

The commercial fishermen of Cortez did their part in helping feed the masses wholesome seafood.

In reference to a call received at 7:32 p.m. on Sept. 18, an e-mail Manning sent to Schnering later that night said, “The call was a repeat event from the previous night, but with a different caller. Last night a verbal warning was issued. Upon arrival, I could hear music coming from the rear of the residence. I made contact with Jorge Corzo. I issued a citation for a noise violation.”

Adopted last December, Ordinance 15-801-1 states that a noise ordinance citation carries a $500 fine.

Manning’s e-mail also notes that he spoke on the phone with the rental agent, Anita Kendrick.

“She was advised concerning the noise, verbal warning from the previous night and citation tonight. She was advised about a possible eviction if another call would be received and verified. The other issue I did not address was the number of cars and overnight guests staying at the house. Up to 10

cars were seen tonight and 12-15 adults present,” Manning’s e-mail said.

An e-mail Manning sent Schnering the previous night said he responded to a noise complaint at 8:32 p.m. and observed numerous cars in the driveway and could hear music and loud voices coming from the rear of the property.

“I made contact with the renter (Corzo) at the front door and had a lengthy discussion on the laws in the city of Anna Maria concerning noise. He assured me his party guests would be advised. I cleared with a verbal warning for now,” Manning’s Sept. 17 e-mail said.

“That’s the first time I’ve seen a citation,” Woodland said in regard to a verbal warning being followed the next night by a citation.

“I think it’s positive thing. I really think our long-term future with this issue is enforcement. I hope we get this to be the norm because when this is more the norm we’re really taking care of the problem,” he added.

Woodland expressed his opinion that less than 10 percent of vacation rental guests and properties create problems for their neighbors, but he then added,

HOLMES BEACH – The planning commission, revived after a two-year hiatus, began tackling changes to the land development code that City Planner Bill Brisson and Building Official Jim McGuinness felt need to be addressed as quickly as possible.

The first issue was adding a provision to allow grass parking for intermittent uses, such as church services and events. This came to light during recent discussions on rezoning a portion of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church’s property.

Brisson said in the suggested language there is a provision that if the use intensifies to the point that the grass dies, the spaces must be paved. This led to a prolonged discussion on terminology regarding the condition of the grass such as “continuously rutted” or “degraded.”

Chair Gary Hickerson said, “If the spaces are all rutted and they never get fixed, the parking surface is materially degraded.”

However board member Scott Boyd pointed out that they could be degraded by extreme weather events, such as a great deal of rain and said, “We want to create more pervious area so water can percolate into the soil, not make too many limitations.”

“You’re missing the point,” Brisson stressed. “It’s only from use, not from flooding. Your building official can make the call.

This is not something that needs to be strictly worded.”

Building Official Jim McGuinness said he liked the term “materially degraded” rather than “dies,” and the others agreed.

Hours of use

Another discussion was regarding adding how many hours or times a week the parking could be used, prompting Brisson to declare, “You’re all missing the point. This is what they intend their parking to be, not proof of the pudding. If they violate that, it shows up if the grass dies or becomes material degraded.”

“What we really want is grass parking, so we don’t want to inhibit it too much,” board alternate Jayne Christenson pointed out.

McGuinness suggested adding that the use would be for “an annual average of three days per week or less,” and the others agreed.

Christenson asked if grass parking would be allowed in residential zoning districts, and Chuck Stealey asked about residences where overflow visitors park on the grass.

Brisson said grass parking would only be allowed in non-residential zoning districts, and added those words to the proposed changes. Regarding residential overflow parking, he said, “That’s a different issue.

They’re not required to provide any form of parking beyond their parking requirements.”

Brisson said they must decide whether to allow the parking spaces to be reduced by 65 or 75 percent. The board agreed on 75 percent.

Stealey asked if the grass parking must have wheel stops and McGuinness replied, ‘Yes. It’s not a free for all.”

Stealey asked about signs marking the entrance and exit, and McGuinness said that would be included the site plan review.

Major and minor developments

The suggestion to include a definition for

minor development and procedures to allow a site plan to be administratively approved by the building official also created a great deal of discussion.

“This provides the building official the authority to approve minor changes to site plans without having to go through a whole city commission review,” McGuinness explained, adding that it would save both time and money for city officials and applicants.

The first discussion centered on the provision for a major site plan review that stated, “New building(s) or expansion of a building(s) that increase the lot coverage by more that XX percent.” McGuinness recommended 20 percent.

Hickerson asked, “How many times could they do that?”

“There would be a maximum cap on the increase up to the maximum lot coverage by the building, which is only 30 percent,” McGuinness replied. “You could only go up to the maximum, then it would go to city commission because it’s not in the requirements of the comp plan and land development code.”

“The building official is going to look at it and determine if it makes sense,” Brisson added. “It doesn’t mean you automatically get approved every time you jump up by a small percentage.”

“This codifies what the building official can and can’t do,” Boyd said. “It provides him or her the opportunity to approve minor SEE PLANNING, PAGE 34

projects. It puts into law what they are and aren’t and limits the capacity to do that on major projects.”

Some members were concerned about owners who could continually seek minor additions, which over time could become major additions.

Boyd pointed out, “We have overall fairly significant maximum limitations.”

However, Hickerson said, “I don’t want to rush through this before all our questions are answered. We had a meeting a month ago and before that it was two years.

“So here we are, and now suddenly we have to do this, this and this right away? I feel like you want us to do something immediately. I just want time to read it over and think about it.

“This is a big change.

Maybe this is not enough or too much or just right. But so far this is the only bowl of porridge that I see.”

Board member Barbara Hines agreed and said, “Sometimes you read something and you have a sense of unease. Now that we’ve had a discussion on it, I’ll sleep on it and it probably will look a lot different.

Things are still percolating.”

Other changes

The board also OK’d the following provisions: • Add the definitions of stand alone bars, cocktail lounges and nightclubs and identify that they are allowed in the C-3 zoning district as a special exception.

• Clarify density and

development standards for resort housing in the mixed use district. Brisson said that the city would treat resort housing as a residential use for density purposes, but as a non-residential use for parking purposes.

• Add a requirement for site plan review in the public recreation/open space district. Hines asked that

they add wildlife/natural/ conservation areas to the list of permitted uses, and the others agreed.

• Identify situations where a variance application is inappropriate.

• Modify the limitation on the width of driveways to include back out parking spaces to prevent property owners from using the entire

width of their property as parking.

Board members approved a motion to recommend all the suggested and amended changes except the one regarding major and minor development site plans, which they plan to discuss at their next meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m.

Setbacks granted Bradenton Beach City Commissioners approved an amendment to the Land Development Code (LDC) that allows for zero-foot front and side yard setbacks for existing or previously permitted open-air dining establishments. The amendment was requested

The amendment also allows for a five-foot setback from the waterfront. The revised LDC adopted earlier this year did away with the historic overlay district that allowed for the zero-foot setbacks. Newly-permitted open-air dining establishments will have to comply with the greater setbacks now required.

Does a second home pay for itself?

Y

ou know the old expression, “If it’s too good to be true, it usually is.” It’s kind of like that with a second home. It can be a really good investment with a variety of tax benefits or it can be a bottomless pit of stress.

Last month I talked about the good and bad aspects of owning a vacation home with other people. This week let’s take a look at the financial benefits of second homes and if it is a good fit for you.

Everyone who owns more than one home has, at some point, considered the possibility of renting one of them to generate income in addition to providing a place for family vacations.

Anna Maria Island is of course right in the mix of this with properties being built exclusively for rental purposes, creating discord among residents and all three island governments.

So how does the average homeowner benefit from owning a second home? The obvious thing is the income produced from renting. According to HomeAway.com and VRBO.com two vacation rental websites, the average annual

Castles in the Sand Louise Bolger rental income nationally is $28,000, a number that is probably considerably lower then what you will find on Anna Maria. In addition, a HomeAway survey from June said that 70 percent of the respondents said rental income covered more than half of their mortgage payments, and another 54 percent said rental income covered 75 percent or more of their mortgage payments.

Rental income from second homes also are used for regular living expenses, education an, of course, renovations and improvements to the property. Last year, according to the National Association of Realtors, the average purchase price for a vacation property was $192,000 and 61 percent of those were financed with a mort-

gage. Again, there aren’t too many properties on Anna Maria Island below $200,000 so we’re totally outside of the national average.

If you’re one of the 61 percent who will be financing a second home, rates are usually equal to or within a quarter of a percentage point of current market rates for a primary residence with between a 10 percent to 20 percent down payment. However, if you are purchasing with the intention of renting most of the time, the lender would consider it an investment property involving tighter qualifications. For example, higher credit scores and a high down payment of approximately 25 percent would be typical.

That said, qualifying for a mortgage on an investment property could be easier since lenders will include the proceeds from the rental income as part of your income calculations.

Also, if your property is established as an investment property, there are legal IRS benefits that can be taken advantage of, but will limit the amount of time for personal use. All expenses related to the property can be written off,

including mortgage interest, property taxes and possibly some of the costs of obtaining the mortgage similar to a primary residence.

In addition, any repairs, maintenance, cleaning, utilities and some of the realtor fees can be expensed against the property. Remember that investment properties are essentially a business, and there also will be depreciation involved, which will be a consideration when the property is sold. Naturally, a sit down with a tax expert familiar with investment property is critical before proceeding.

Finally, you have to ask yourself do you have the stomach to be a landlord, especially if it involves seasonal rentals that turn over quickly and can create problems on a weekly basis.

Hiring a property management company can certainly take the pain out of frequent intrusions into your daily life, but it will also cut into your profits. Proceed with caution. It may be too good to be true.

Early, mail voters active According to the Manatee County Supervisor of Elections website, 112,203, or 48.56 percent, of Manatee County’s 231,056 eligible voters had already early voted or voted by mail as of Sunday night. An additional 48,615 voters cast their ballots in person during early voting, equating to 43.3 percent of the preliminary ballots cast. The elections office website did not indicate the party affiliations of those who voted before Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

LDC amendment adopted The code amendment could benefit more than 20 residential property owners.

BRADENTON BEACH – The City Commission has approved a Land Development Code (LDC) amendment that allows existing residential properties that border the Bridge Street business district to be modified, improved and enhanced.

Proposed by City Planner Alan Garrett, the LDC amendment created by Ordinance 16-470 applies to the C-1 Limited Commercial zone districts that encompass Third Street South and First Street North.

An oversight in the city code developed long ago states that residential uses are not allowed in the C-1 zone districts, which made those homes and properties nonconforming with the existing code. “These nonconforming residential uses cannot be enlarged, increased or intensified. It has been determined that even the addition of a swimming pool for residential use is an intensification and currently cannot be permitted,�

Garrett wrote in a memo sent to commissioners in early October.

The residential uses are nonconforming because residential structures are not a permitted use in the C-1 zone district. As a non-conforming use, these residential structures were subject to nonconforming use provisions that allowed for continued residential use, but not for any significant improvements. Land and structures are considered nonconforming if their use is not a currently permitted use or if their use exceeds the density of what is allowed in the zone district.

The adopted amendment was the result of requests and inquires made by property owners, including a Third Street South property owner who wanted to upgrade his aging structure and add a swimming pool.

Adopted on Oct. 20 after previously being recommended by the Planning and Zoning Board, the amendment allows existing residential structures to be added to the list of permitted uses.

As a permitted use, the existing residential uses become permanent and are no longer subject to the limitations of enlargement or intensification. “In my mind, it’s better to see these homes maintained than to see them get dilapidated because they can’t be improved. I counted over 20 homes this would effect,� Garrett recently said. “You can’t tear down an existing

house. If you did, you would have to replace it with a commercial or retail use. You can tear down part of it, add on and update it, but you reach a point where you’ve removed enough where it would have to be demolished and considered new construction,� he explained. “I’m strongly for this because it affects more than 20 property owners and it carries on without affecting things,� Mayor Bill Shearon said before the commission unanimously approved the ordinance on second and final reading.

When the planning board members reviewed the request in June, they also recommended that at some point in the future the C-1 zone districts in question be rezoned to MXD/Mixed-Use, which would allow for both commercial and residential uses.

On Monday, Garrett said he’s already received a request from the Third Street South property owner who wants to add a pool and another from an owner on that street who wants to add a screened lanai to her deck.

Blalock Walters lays down the law

After graduating from the small instructional soccer field at The Center with base skills and experience under their shin guards, the youth of the Island move their game to the bigger field with each goal tallied and scores listed in The Sun scoreboard. Last Monday night, Team Blalock Walters went head-to-head with Team Air & Energy.

With volunteer coaches Steve Perry and David Greene on the field guiding and cheering his players, the six and seven year old soccer players showed their love of the game and time on the field.

Early in the game, it was clear that the two teams were evenly matched.

Ethan Guerrero, strong leg for Blalock Walters, and Jack McCarthy, key talent for Air & Energy, brought the games score to 1-1. As the game progressed and each player found his/her footing on the field, Guerrero took the soccer ball past mid-field to once again find the net pushing Blalock Walters ahead 2-1.

The defense of Team Air & Energy challenged the offensive attacks of its opponents. After strong defensive play

by Caroline Wettstein and ViVi Duprey, Guerrero made his way to the goal once again widening the scoring gap for his team.

Guerrero ran around the defenders, with the help of his teammates, to strike quick and strike hard. McCarthy was awarded the save after the ball ricocheted off right post.

With the score 3-1, Team Air & Energy’s Charlie Rogers took a corner kick for his team. The soccer ball was deflected by the goalie William Pakbaz, but bounced into the net for a goal, bringing the score closer at 3-2.

Pakbaz followed up the unlucky scoring bounce with a great save on the next offensive pursuit by Air & Energy.

With GiGi Greene in the goal, McCarthy played strong defense for Team Air & Energy hoping to give his team another chance on offense.

As the clock ticked off the remaining minutes and seconds of the game, the Island area kiddos played their hearts out, learning from their coaches, hearing the cheers of their fans on the sideline and having fun at the island’s community center – their home away from home.

Rev. Charlie Shook’s new book available The book is titled “Hiding Behind the Pulpit, Confessions of a Barely Called Preacher.”

HOLMES BEACH – After serving more than 40 years in the ministry, Rev. Charlie Shook began writing his book, “Hiding Behind the Pulpit, Confessions of a Barely Called Preacher,” three years ago.

“It’s the story of my own struggle to make sense out of life,” he said. “I used religion as the breeding ground for finding answers.”

Shook spent 20 years serving the Methodist Church in western Ohio and met his wife, Lois, or Mama Lo to Island locals, in the last church in which he served in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“We found each other and began to plan our life together,” he recalled. “We were both attracted to this part of the

Within two years of settling on the Island, Shook began teaching classes at Longboat Island Chapel and then began filling in as needed as minister, which he continued doing for the past 22 years. Last year, he was named Minister Emeritus and the fellowship hall was named for him.

“The book is one man’s story of how I’ve tried to draw on the resources of religion to answer the questions people have to live with,” he explained.

“The two big puzzles for me have to do with undeserved suffering and untimely death. If there’s a passion in

my life, it’s to make sense out of those two things.

“There’s a power that helps us make it through. It’s there when we need it, and it gives us the strength to keep going.”

CORTEZ – The Florida Maritime Museum is optimistic that prospective donors were hooked last week when supervisor Amara Nash and Karen Bell, of A.P. Bell Fish Co., presented a business plan for a Folk School.

About 13 potential donors, some from Cortez, attended the Sarasota presentation, part of a project

by The Patterson Foundation to assist not-for-profit organizations in generating revenue to support themselves.

The foundation is offering a 50 percent match for any funds donated, Nash said.

“There was some excitement for the project,” she said, which will offer classes in woodworking, quilt making, fish cutting, net mending, vegetable canning, mapmaking and other traditional folk arts and crafts.

The year-round school would be the first in Florida, and with enough donations, a coordinator could be hired to run the program, Nash said.

10/28, Battery on law enforcement officer, 116 Bridge St. The officer had the defendant on the ground because he was very intoxicated and unable to walk. During that time, the defendant tried to hit the officer. When another officer arrived for backup, the defendant hit him in the head and a struggle ensued. He was finally handcuffed and taken to jail.

10/28, trespass after warning, 106 Bridge St. The defendant was at a location from which he had been trespassed.

He was arrested.

10/29, theft, 2312 Gulf Drive N., Sunset Terrace. A bike was stolen from a rack attached to the owner’s car.

10/30,Baker Act, Bridge Street Pier Anchorage. The officer received a call about a subject who wanted to commit suicide. He told the caller to get the subject off his boat and on land so he could be evaluated. He was taken to Center Stone.

10/24,driving without a license, 5200 Gulf Drive. The officer stopped the defendant after clocking her at 42 mph in a 25 mph zone She said she did not have a license and has never had one. She said her husband usually drives her to and from work.

10/25, camping, Manatee County Beach, 4000 Gulf Drive. The officer found the homeless woman sleeping at the park, He issued a trespass warning to her.

10/26, code violation, sleeping at a trolley stop, Manatee County Beach, 4000 Gulf Drive. The officer found the subject sleeping on the bench with a blanket.

He was issued a ticket and told to move on.

10/27, aggravated battery, 3015 Gulf Drive, Citgo. The defendant, who is known to Bradenton Beach Police for disturbing the peace on Bridge Street, attacked a man and hit him, breaking two teeth.

The victim said the attack was unprovoked and it occurred after they both got off a trolley. The victim said he got off the trolley first, and the defendant got off at the next stop and went back to the victim.

Teens charged with multiple crimes

11/1, trespass after warning, resisting a law enforcement officer without violence, 4528 119th St. W., Cortez Kitchen. The defendant was issued a trespass warning for sleeping aboard boats in dry dock. He was given time to get his belongings, but he rode his skateboard to a mechanics shop and took a wrench.

He returned to the deputies and would not put down the wrench as ordered until a deputy unholstered a Taser.

They had to use the Taser and carry him to a patrol car. He went to jail.

Between Oct. 9 and 14, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies received reports of two burglaries and a theft within the City of Anna Maria. One of the burglaries involved more than $1,000 in damage to a residence and the other two incidents included kayaks being stolen and sold on Craigslist.
