The starting point of the collection is a couple of key concepts: visually, everything is influenced by Carlo Scarpa, Italian Architect, his buildings, his design, his relationship to the city of Venice, a combination of stairs and water. Choosing him was symbolic, almost mandatory, as his home-land became my adoptive land, a region I grew up in and have nothing but fond memories of. And Venice (and the region surrounding it) is at the heart of his work, but also it is the limit, the edge, the historical connection between land and water, West and East. This collection seeks to convey these elements: structure, fluidity, layers, folklore, japanism. It is a city that is ex-temporal but at the same time threatened by the present: global warming, the evil of our time, could ultimately submerge and destroy this unique and vulnerable landscape. Sustainability therefore becomes a key issue, another central concept in the collection. The fibres are either bio-degradable or recycled plastics (post-consumer). No waste has been generated for the garments, minimal has occurred for accessories. Off-cuts have become bags or jewellery, everything can be taken apart, separated, recycled. Main materials are Tencel, from Lenzing; Nylon 6.6 provided by Nilit; offcuts of polished brass and perspex. These three garments and their accessories became more and more important to me for so many reasons. I wanted to strengthen my knowledge of knitwear and fashion and push my limits within a one year period: I’ve done many things I’ve never done before, I stepped completely out of my comfort zone. I have so many people to thank for this, skilled individuals that made me realise how design and creativity are collective processes, even though our ego most of time tries to convince us otherwise. Explaining things again and again can make your work seem redundant or trivialize the whole process. I could either write pages about the whole experience or just a couple or paragraphs as I just did. I hope the work speaks for itself. -A.

Carlo Scarpa was an Italian architect (1906- 1978) deeply connected to Venice, his city, and its traditions, its history. His most famous and exemplative work is the Brion Tomb near Treviso, in the Italian region of Veneto. The man who had commissioned the Tomb, Aldo Businaro, bonded with the architect, and they travelled around the world to promote Italian architecture and design. Together they spent time in Japan, a country that impacted Scarpa’s aesthetic and philosophy. It was in Japan, in Sendai, that Carlo Scarpa passed away: he tripped and fell while looking up to admire a Japanese building. He is con sid ered one of Italy’s great est archi tects even though he never actually qualified officially as one (he refused to take the pro forma test). His reputation and body of work span throughout architecture, furniture design, glassmaking, and his designs are analysed by stu dents across the globe, yet he refused to study his dis ci pline in the tra di tional way him self. Constantly defying convention and break ing rules, Scarpa became known for fus ing old struc tures with con temporary innovations.

A FEW THANK-YOUS

Juliana for pushing me and be-

lieving in me (it sounds trite but that’s how it went down); Phil, Simon and Carlos for being so patient with me and my complete ignorance of knitwear; Sue for always finding time for me; Sean and Maddy for the details that matter; Matt for caring; Katherine for the advice and support; Chin for modelling; the craziness in the MA studio, the group-snacking, the empathy, the giggles. Lenzing and Nilit for the yarns.
