C O.NATURE MASTER DIPLOMA PROJECT 2022 with honors

Area: Poznan | Poland Academic year: 2021/22 | 2nd-circle Author: Anna Maria Potorska Profesor: dr hab. inz. arch Ewa Pruszewicz-Sipinska Dean of the Faculty of Architecture University: Poznan University of Technology

The project aims to create a form whose culmination „stands out” above the green roof of the first floor. By creating a form that rhythmically follows the landmarks of the city of Poznań. The building creates a chord at the end of the Poznan University of Technology Campus, as a distinct element that visually closes the campus (the idea of the distinctiveness of the university infrastructure). The project is a response to the problem of socialization of

-8-

students, especially in post-pandemic times. The assumption is a response to the shortages of necessary services on the premises of the Piotrowo Campus. Allowing students to live inside the campus as in a separate self-sufficient organism. It was also important in the project to preserve green spaces as much as possible, such as green roofs accessible from the ground floor, which encourage students to relax in the fresh air.

SITE PLAN

CO.NATURE The correlation with nature, the relationship between the ordered greenery and the natural greenery, originally found in the studied area play a major role in the entire project. The green areas of the Cybina waterfront become a factor improving the quality of breaks between classes, enabling more effective mental regeneration of students.

SECTION A-A

MATERIALS Main material used for the facade is cedar boards, charred by using the traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban method. This technique, despite the thermal treatment, makes the material more resistant to fire. In addition, it shows significant resistance to humidity, which is extremely important in the riverside, environment conditions.

- 16 -

SECTION B-B

MENTAL REGENERATION Based on numerous studie reaseachers as well as my own master reasearch, it has been proven that water has the greatest impact on the mental regeneration of students who are exposed to the

daily stress associated with their studies. The design proposal of the Cybina waterfront is a sculptural architectural form that will act as a visual bridge with the othere side of the city Poznan. In ad-

dition, the selection of the greenery of the river embankment is to allow the use of these areas without feeling high stress related to the wild, neglected greenery.

R HYTHM HO US E BACHELOR DIPLOMA PROJECT 2021

Area: Poznan | Poland Academic year: 2020/21 | 1st-circle Author: Anna Maria Potorska Profesor: dr hab. inz. arch Ewa Pruszewicz-Sipinska Dean of the Faculty of Architecture University: Poznan University of Technology

The purpose of the project of a multi-family building in Poznań was to ensure the spatial order of the quarter. The form of the building follows the architecture of tenement houses and low (2-3-storey) villas (opposite the front facade), while maintaining the rhythm of window openings in the frontage of tenement houses and the axis of symmetry of its buildings. It continues the height of the cornices of neighboring tenement houses. Studying the history of the place, which drew a

- 20 -

lot from English architecture in the 20th century, provided inspiration at a later stage of design. Thanks to the use of the difference in height, two entrances (from the front) were created, available at two different levels (a characteristic feature of London tenement houses). A modern courtyard was designed based on twentieth-century gardens in the Jeżyce quarters. And whose inspiration they drew from the English cottage houses.

LANDSCAPE DETAIL

PROJECT IDEA The vertical axis of symmetry divides the form into two mirrored parts. Both corners of the front facade are sliced. The movable form is limited only to the core of the building (vertical axis). It gives two alternating modules (floors 1 and 3 and floors 2 and 4). The form of the balconies reminds of ‚viewing tubes’ , which open up the view of the most important landmarks of the city.

I N HAR MONY PAVILON COMPETITION

Area: Warsaw | Poland Academic year: 2021/22 , 2nd-circle Author: Anna Maria Potorska Competition: Kolo - Pavilon 2022

The basis for the design of the East Pavilion were three main elements: the history of the place, recognition of the scale and proportion (Harmony) and the relationship with the natural surroundings (Wilanów Park). The history of the Orangery in Wilanów (building adjacent to the project) influenced the architectural character of the designed Eastern pavilion. The initial front facade (eastern facade) was divided into four parts, referring to the divisions of the portico

- 32 -

of the Orangery. The last two divisions were withdrawn deeper into the plot in order to give the form lighter character. A glass connector leads to the Orangery building. The project consists of two levels: ground floor (reception and place of purchase tickets) and the underground floor (public toilets). Elevating the level of the ground floor to the height of the Orangery floor’s level, allowed the installation of skylights providing natural light also on the -1 level.

SITE PLAN

MATERIALS The choice of recycled wooden elements to construct the frame and glued laminated timber to finish the building’s facade is directly related to the idea of maintaining harmony between nature and the new structure, and as a response to the exhausting natural resources of our planet.

- 34 -

IN HARMONY The use of a shed roof allows for the placement of photovoltaic panels. In addition, vertical window openings provide more effective venti ation by directing the air flow. More efficient lighting is provided by an installation of reflective and sound-absorbing ceiling tiles

R E -MINE REUSE OF THE HISTORIC MINE

Area: Calabona | Italy Academic year: 2019/20, 1st-circle Author: Anna Maria Potorska Profesors: Prof. João Nunes, Prof. Giorgio Peghin University: University of Cagliari

The mine of Calabona is a place that has been completely absorbed by nature. The project consists of several architectural components that create a hierarchy between each others. The exiting structures gained a new life, through the use of pergolas that refer to the original shape. The project also consists new form of terrace that is strongly associated with the mediterranean architecture, such sollution took its origin in the island Capraia located neer to Sardegna.

- 38 -

Main builing is placed under the ground, by using natural level diffrence. The idea is related to the previous use of these sites as mine. Front facades of the building face the see side and gives the figurative connection between them. -

L A CASA I TA LI A NA LECTURE HALL IN MAPUTO

Area: Maputo | Mozambique Academic year: 2019/20, 1st-circle Author: Anna Maria Potorska Profesors: prof. Giovanni Marco Chiri prof. Maddalena Achenza University: University of Cagliari

Due to specific climat of Maputo (high temperature and humidity) the design building contains two shelters made from bamboo: external and interial. It creates rigid, homogeneous facade with free air flow and at the same time doses the amount of sun entering to the rooms. Chosen material for the wall is rammed earth which provides a certain effect from an architecture point of view as well as it is sustainable material. It provides excellent protection from climate extremes:

- 46 -

with the result of higher termerature in winter and lower during the summer. Rammed earth is non-toxic and it limits air pollution. Whats is more such a material is much easier to produce in Mozambique than for example concrete. As a representive building of italian culture in Mozambic the main elements are directly associated with Italy: coffered skylight made from babmboo and cloisters.

SPA COM P LE X HOTEL AND SPA RESORT

Area: La Maddalena | Italy Academic year: 2019/20, 1st-circle Author: Anna Maria Potorska Profesor: prof. Giovanni Marco Chiri University: University of Cagliari

The main idea of the project is based on the preservation of existing buildings. Restoration of existing structures highlights the original stonework. Some architecture pieces have been modified by adding new elements such as an additional rooftop, open pool, view points etc. While other strictly show the true nature of the historic place. In the lower part of Poggio Rasu are located: a restaurant, reception and hotel complex. In the upper part a spa and yoga

- 54 -

complex. Whole structure represents a correlation between pre-existing elements and new additions as well as highlighting the importance of nature and natural shape given by the island. By using similar materials and characteristic interior elements like tubular shape capsules with greenery inside gives unity between lower and upper part of the area.
