Triumph of Music
q
Dear friend of the Annapolis Symphony:
The word is out…the buzz is on…and the excitement is building! The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra is preparing for its most exciting season ever, and we want YOU to be a part of it! We are privileged to be welcoming superstar violinist Midori to Annapolis for our magnificent Opening Night concerts, and you can meet her in person if you join us for our Opening Night Celebration. Two other world-class violinists add to the excitement. Grammy-award-winning James Ehnes is a wellestablished international artist of unquestionable reputation. He will perform here in Annapolis and at The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda. Noah Bendix-Balgley may not be a household name to you quite yet, but as the newest First Concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, he needs no further credentials. While it is a great honor that soloists of such international prominence choose to play here in Annapolis, we are also proud of our hometown heroes, and thus, our very own Fatma Daglar, Principal Oboist of Annapolis Symphony, will be our soloist for the March concerts. It is also a great opportunity for us to introduce new, young artists of great promise as well as first-class new music. Together with Christopher Janwong McKiggan, a phenomenally talented young pianist from Thailand, we are delighted to present you the American premiere of a new concerto by Pulitzer-Prizewinning Chinese-American composer Zhou Long that I am sure you will not forget. And of course, we’ll have some lighter fun along the way at our Holiday Pops concert, featuring the brilliantly creative Sultans of String, who will thrill us with their genre-hopping passport of Celtic reels, flamenco, Gypsy-jazz, Arabic, Cuban, and South Asian rhythms.
2
Soloists such as these perform with the Annapolis Symphony and tell us, again and again, what a pleasure it is to play with this orchestra because of its consistently outstanding quality and extraordinary musicianship. This spectacular quality is yours to enjoy, right here in Annapolis. One other exciting thing I want to tell you about: the name of our season, and the artwork you are seeing in this brochure. As it happens, 2017 marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of the great painter Marc Chagall. Chagall was profoundly dedicated to and inspired by music. Among his most famous works are his painting on the ceiling of the Paris Opera Garnier, and his murals at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The New York murals are called The Triumph of Music—the name of this season’s series—and many of the symphonic masterworks we have chosen to perform for you this year are inspired by these and other musical themes and images in Chagall’s artwork. I think this adds a very interesting and exciting depth to our season. Finally, don’t forget that the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra has vibrant partnerships with both the Annapolis Opera and the United States Naval Academy and its Glee Clubs. Our performances with these wonderful local organizations deserve your enthusiastic attention, and this brochure contains dates and times for these performances. I invite you to be part of this unparalleled season. Please subscribe today— tickets are limited and are already selling faster than ever before. And thank you for being a part of the Annapolis Symphony family! Sincerely,
José-Luis Novo, Music Director The Philip Richebourg Chair

g ive back The Annapolis Symphony survives and thrives because of subscribers and donors. It’s that simple. The Symphony is a not-for-profit. Why? Because if we were a for-profit, we would have to charge $400 per seat per concert to break even. One-third of the Symphony’s revenue comes from subscribers and ticket-buyers. The rest, two-thirds, comes from donors—people like you who love the Symphony, believe it is important to the cultural and economic life of our community, and invest to make it happen. In 55 years, the Symphony has never had to close its doors, because donors in the community have invested to ensure that great symphonic music continues to survive and thrive. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to the Symphony to ensure that the very exciting season before us—as well as our educational and outreach programs—continue to survive, thrive, and grow. If it is within your means, we ask you to consider two special opportunities. Members of Crescendo!, those who give $1,000 or more per year, receive special benefits. And Crescendo! members who give $2,500 are named as sponsors of a particular musician, with opportunities to meet sponsored musicians and get to know them in person—an absolutely unique behind-the-scenes exposure to the gifted artists who are the Annapolis Symphony. And if you include non-profit organizations in your estate plans, please consider doing the same for the Annapolis Symphony. Special opportunities are available, which the Executive Director will happily share with you. To make a gift, please visit our website and click the “Donate” button, or contact the Symphony office at 410-269-1132.
