IDENTITY
INTRODUCTION: WHAT IS NORTHSIDE? Northside is located in the northern region of Cincinnati, Ohio. Located along the Mill Creek the area began as an industrial area spurred on by the business brought to Cincinnati by the creek. The area, originally known as Cumminsville, was split into Northside and South Cumminsville after the construction of I-74, which divided the neighborhood. Northside is known as a very diverse area both socio-economically and racially. This has given the area a progressive and alternative image. Northside is centered around a business district located on Hamilton Ave. This area is home to many local stores, restaurants, and music venues. Visitors are drawn to the area because of its image of being welcoming to artists, musicians, and the LGBTQ community. Looking at Northside from an outsider’s perspective shows the strengths of the neighborhood and allows for the examination of where the neighborhood could be improved.

IMPRESSIONS: WHAT DO WE THINK IS NORTHSIDE? In order to understand Northside, we had to see what stood out to us. To begin this project we drove and walked through the neighborhood. Afterward creating an impressions map that features the most obvious aspects of the neighborhood. These included large murals, businesses, parks, and areas where there was a clear change in use or function. Then we created a wordle. This consists of words that defined the physical and cultural aspects of Northside. Looking at the overview of a neighborhood is essential before diving into the details and data, this helps us keep in mind Northside’s image so that any suggestions we make will be in line with what the community wants and keeps their culture alive.

IDENTITY: WHAT MAKES NORTHSIDE UNIQUE? ART OF NORTHSIDE Art is an essential part of Northside’s identity. This can be seen in the murals throughout the community as well as the multiple businesses along Hamilton Ave dedicated to art and creativity. When branding Northside we wanted to keep in mind the voice of the artists in the area who work to make it a beautiful place to live.
MUSIC OF NORTHSIDE There are many music venues in the neighborhood that are open for local or smaller bands to play in. Additionally, the bars and nightlife of Northside rely on the music crowd to support them. The residents of Northside embrace this and even have an annual Fourth of July Rock and Roll festival in Hoffner Park, along Hamilton Ave. As this is so important to the economy and culture of the area we thought it important to include music in the identity of Northside.

IMAGEABILITY: SIMPLE LAYOUT OF NORTHSIDE
Through Imageability mapping we identified five main uses of Northside. The largest being residential, then business, greenspace, industrial, and public use. Additionally, we wanted to focus on the areas of Northside that felt like one community rather than the rigid political boundaries. We defined areas that felt like edges, nodes of activity, and pathways in order to understand the flow and focus areas of Northside.

SENSIBILITY: SENSIBLE CHARACTERISTICS OF NORTHSIDE
Northside is centered around two main streets. These being Hamilton Ave, running north to south, and Blue Rock Rd, running east to west. Most of the traffic volume is carried by Hamilton Ave, which is also the street hosting the business district. As Northside advertises itself as a walkable neighborhood we wanted to show our sense of interaction between walkability and vehicle traffic flow. The walkability map shows the areas that are most accessible to the business district.
The traffic flow map shows the interaction between pedestrians and vehicles. As an area that promotes itself as walkable, it is important to evaluate the interaction between the residents and people traveling through the area to ensure people are being safe and to see if Northside is fully delivering on their claim.

HISTORY: HOW DID NORTHSIDE COME TO BE?
The Beginning
1800 - 1860
It was not till the 1820s and the introduction of the Miami-Erie Canal that a real population started to develop. The Miami and Erie Canal caused the workers to inhibit the area and caused the population to grow. The area was named after one of the original settlers in the area, David Cummins, and began to grow in population, and popularity.
Northside Cincinnati started out as a small patch of Shawnee Indian territory. The Shawnee were said to be descendants of the precontact Fort Ancient culture of the Ohio region. Settlers started to move in and take over the territory through the early 1800s until the neighborhood was created. There originally were only a few residents, several homes, a tavern and a few businesses.
8
Because of its location in Ohio and its proximity to the Ohio River and Miami Erie canal, trade and industry became very popular in the area. What once was a simple Native American Territory was now becoming a hotspot for machinery and production.

Welcome to Cumminsville
DAYTON
Industry Boom Now that the area was a booming industrial zone the need for workers increased exponentially. Most jobs were dangerous and unskilled with low pay. Throughout the late 1800s, the cheapest form of labor was to recruit immigrants and the two most prominent immigrant groups in the area at the time were the Irish and the Germans.
1860 - 1920
The German mass immigration began in the 1830s after the Revolution in the German states and the Irish started to immigrate to Cincinnati around the same time as a result of potato famine in their country. The two cultures clashed over the necessity for jobs and the increase in industry created an ongoing cultural conflict throughout the years.
Now that the factories had an abundance of workers due to the immigrants, Cumminsville’s production couldn’t be stopped. A wealthy citizenry supported high quality shops, merchants, and manufacturing. At one point, the business area, Knowlton’s Corner, was one of the busiest commercial areas in Cincinnati
9
Population Bust
1920 - 1980
Business was booming in Cumminsville until 1974 when the construction of Interstate 74 divided it into a North and South. People no longer had reason to live near work because of the ability to drive so they left for more rural neighborhoods. Once everyone left, housing prices dropped
The income in the area plumeted and people could no longer afford to buy things from the wealthier businesses. As a result the businesses were no longer making a profit so they quickly left too. By the 1960s most of the industry in Cumminsville was gone. It wasn't until the 1980s that the area began to grow once more due to its undervalued homes

A New Era
1980 - 2020
Currently Northside is known as a bustling entertainment district with an abundance of art in the form of murals and music venues. The neighborhood’s many restaurants and unique stores combined with the walkability of Hamilton Avenue have turned Northside into the place it is today and has made its mark on the Cincinnati area forever
Now that the industry had mostly left it was time for the neighborhood to reinvent iself. North Cumminsville was given the name Northside in 1800 and art and music started making a prominent appearance in the area. Some of the few businesses that popped up throughout this time included Schaeper’s Pharmacy, the Comet, Shake it Records, Northside Tavern, Urban Artifact
s hake It Welcome to Northside
One thing that developed in the neighborhood was an increase in inculsivity primaritly with the LGBTQ+ community in 1999 to 2013. Northside was the home to the Gay and Lesbains Community Center of Greater Cincinnati, as well as the Cincinnati Pride Parade from 2000 to 2009. Although these are no longer in the neighborhood, the spirit of acceptance is still strong in Northside, with many LQBTQ+ families living there

DATA: STATISTICS ON NORTHSIDE
WALKSCORE COMPARISON Northside promotes itself as a walkable neighborhood but in reality, it is not as walkable as it seems. This is Northside compared to the most walkable neighborhood in Cincinnati, Over the Rhine. Both are set up very similarly with the main business district and a very busy road that splits the neighborhood in half. The most walkable area in Northside is also the most heavily trafficked area causing a disconnect within the neighborhood and a potential problem.
12
OVERALL NEIGHBORHOOD COMPARISON Over-the-Rhine is significantly more walkable than Northside. While walkability is important, it is also crucial to compare all forms of transportation. From a statistical standpoint, Northside as a whole is lacking in public transportation and bike use when compared to OTR. The scary thing is that Northside is ranked 9th on Cincinnati’s most walkable neighborhoods and its walk score is almost half of OTRs So if people aren’t walking, biking, or taking public transit, then how are they getting around? The answer is: DRIVING!
The number of drivers in Northside is significantly higher than the people walking and biking. If Northside has all of this walking infrastructure than why are people not walking.
ACCESSIBILITY TO VEHICLES
Almost everyone is driving and it is leading to a large conflict between the popular walking and driving areas. The area that has the most walking is also the area that has the most traffic causing a disruption and a conflict between drivers and walkers.
DRIVERS PER CENSUS TRACT One thing to look at is not only the number of drivers but the number of cars in general. There could be 17 drivers in one house but only 2 cars available for use. Once again census tract 78 has the most amount of vehicles by far with most of its residents having 2 cars available to them. This makes for heavy traffic congestion and if the number of cars is greater than the number of walkers, then there’s no wonder there is an issue.

URBAN DESIGN ANALYSIS: A DEEPER LOOK AT NORTHSIDE
LAND USE MAP
FIGURE GROUND MAP
Northside’s primary land uses are residential, commercial, industrial, and green space. The majority being residential shown through all areas of the neighborhood. The commercial areas are focused in the center of the neighborhood, where the business district is, with some smaller pockets in other areas. The industrial portions are separated in the bottom left and right corners of Northside.
LINKAGES MAP Northside has many arterial roads in the center of the neighborhood. These bring the larges amount of traffic through and around the area. The linkages map shows points of focus that would benefit the community to walk to, with the colors around them showing the walk times. Due to main roads such as I-74, walkability in those areas is cut off as shown by the red lines.

URBAN DESIGN ANALYSIS: RESIDENTIAL TYPOLOGY CROSS SECTION
ELEVATIONS FIGURE GROUND
The residential section we chose consisted mostly of single and multi-family housing units and a public recreational area. The 3-D model allows one to see how the residential area is very spread out when compared to others like the business district. For the cross-sections, we looked at how Hamilton Ave. differed from a smaller street, Westmoreland Ave. The main differences were Westmoreland Ave. allowed parking on both sides of the street with one shared lane for driving in the center, while Hamilton Ave. had four distinct, marked lanes for driving with restricted parking times. Also Westmoreland Ave. had grass separating the sidewalk from the street and this feature was not present on Hamilton Ave. The street elevation showcases Westmoreland Ave. and shows a mix of apartments with single-family homes its display of various architectural styles.

URBAN DESIGN ANALYSIS: COMMERICIAL TYPOLOGY CROSS SECTION
ELEVATIONS FIGURE GROUND
The Business Section of Northside showcases the unique shops and density of storefronts along Hamilton ave as well as the surrounding residential area to show the difference in style and layout. The SketchUp model showcases three main things. Building density, architectural style, and location of trees. The cross-sections are of Hamilton avenue near the Knowlton Street intersection across from the bartending school and showcases a very busy street with businesses on either side. The other cross-section is of Chase Road which is a smaller less busy road and that has business on one side of the street and residential on the other to show the difference in business and look. The elevation is along the right side of Hamilton avenues business district and showcases the proximity and heights of the buildings along that streetas well as the unique architectural style found in the local business.
SKETCH UP 16
ISSUES AND OPPORTUNITIES: WHAT CAN BE FIXED IN NORTHSIDE? OVERVIEW OF ANALYSIS
There has been many issues between cars and pedestrians in the history of Northside. The area with the most walkability is also the are with the highest flow of traffic. In 2018, Lt. Col. Paul Neudigate acknowledged that Northside would be focusing less on pedestrian saftey and more on violent crime overall
17
While there are lots of large green areas in Northside, not all of them are utilized very well. Primarily the areas closest to the neighborhhods up north. Near the business district there are multiple smaller but well utilized green spaces for example Hoffner Park has a gazebo and playground that kids can use
The median home value in Northside is $160,456. Northside home values have gone up 5. 7% over the past year and is expected to rise 3.2% over the next year. Rising prices are especially bad near the business district and is leading to lack of affordable housing, gentrification, and loss of community
By far the most unique thing about Northside is its business district. The unique buildings and local stores, combined with the music and art venues creates a very popular attratraction for the neighborhood. While the stores are very well used the same cannot be said for the sidewalks and walkways
The mill creek has suffered nearly a century of pollution from unregulated industries along its banks, and has become a dumping ground for chemicals and waste. While the mill creek is utilized in many other neighborhoods, it is not in Northside. The mill was even the location of a recent fatal car crash in 2019
A SWOT Analysis allows one to see all aspects of a community and how they interact with each other. Northside is a large community with many stengths and opportunities. To have a better idea on how to improve the area we also have to look at the weaknesses and threats to the neighborhood
18
ISSUES AND OPPORTUNITIES: HOW CAN WE FIX NORTHSIDE? OVERVIEW OF RECOMMENDATIONS
After the shift to crime caused less focus on walkability, the city council earmarked $500,000 for pedestrian safety improvements for fiscal year 2018 and renewed that fund for 2019. The main focus for pedestrian saftey in Northside should be on Hamilton Ave as that is the area with the most accidents
19
There are many well utilized green spaces near the business district however there are less in the much larger green areas in the neighborhoods up north, especially the parker woods area. Adding things like playground equipment or building public outdoor shelters can help better utilize these green spaces
Northside currently ranks No. 29 in the nation and No. 2 in Ohio among the fastest-gentrifying areas. This is a result of urban renewal causing sky-high rents and home prices, especially near the business district. We need to focus on preserving the affodable housing specifically in that area
Urban beauty is a term used to describe the aethetic of a city. There has been a recent urban influx of younger people into neighborhoods in Cincinnati, primarily near the Central Business Districts. Urban beauty has been found to greatly effect economic gain making urban beautifucation a large opportunity in north side
The Mill Creek Watershed Council of Communities has been helping to clean up and enforce water quality regulation with industries in over 40 communities. We can utilize this council to clean up the creek and add walkways and greenery to help make it into a utilized space in Northside

SUMMARY: THE FUTURE OF NORTHSIDE
NORTHSIDE BLOOM MURAL
25
RESIDENTIAL AREA
Throughout our study of Northside, we have been able to examine many sides of the neighborhood’s physical form and culture. Looking at all aspects of a community is essential before making any suggestions for improvements, this is to ensure that our suggestions are in line with what the residents want for their neighborhood and fits the character of the area. In order to accomplish this, we first had to look at the area from an outsider’s perspective we tackled this in the introductions section. From this, we narrowed our focus area to the business district. This is the area that draws most outsiders into the neighborhood and is the most walked section of Northside. The neighborhood has strong physical characteristics and is fairly successful at advertising itself. Because of this, we focused on more minor issues that could be resolved and would have a positive impact on the business district and benefit the current residents. Our main two suggestions being improving pedestrian safety and urban beautification along the stretch of Hamilton Ave. where the businesses are located. These are two pretty inexpensive updates that could make a huge improvement to the area. Improving pedestrian safety is important as this area is home to the highest rate of pedestrian and vehicle traffic which has led to tragedies in the past; slowing traffic and adding increased signage can save lives. Urban beautification makes the area even more walkable and appealing to an outsider, bringing more business to the area, helping the economy. As an added benefit adding greenery and other beautification techniques can lower pollution and assist in slowing traffic. It has been so fun looking at Northside over the last semester it is a very interesting neighborhood full of art, color, and great people.
