mas I - atelier manuel e francisco aires mateus the site is inside bosco fontana, an artificial wood in the middle of the mantuan countryside (italy) wanted by gonzaga family for chasing. the strong feature of the tall wood compared to the flat fields inspired the projects, which aims to underline this clear limit by standing exactly over it. the house is composed by independent rooms, each of which has an external space that makes feel the limit of the wood while moving from room to room within the house domain. the project also investigates minimum living spaces: every room, including expositive spaces, is carved in a two meters wide sort of wall. the mixed construction is made by an internal concrete wall and an cladding of external reused bricks; the resulting appearance is a timeless ruins, with a Richard Serra’s sculpture inside, that stands there since centuries ago. 11

assembly of prefab modules
the existing thick slabs of the old buildings in kempthall (zurich, switzerland) allowed to add roof gardens, which therefore result on direct contact with the surrounding natural landscape, acquiring high living quality. within the masterplan (see p.69), the buildings below the living level have been assigned to architecture, design and fashion ateliers, so a small reuse project was necessary; the apartments above have been thought for people who work there, single men or women or couples without children. wooden prefabricated living volumes, added above existing buildings, are always reachable only by vertical connections starting outside at the ground level, in order to keep the layering very clear and get people up faster. Economically the idea is to finance the conservation and renovation of the existing buildings by the immediate earnings of the prefabricated low cost living boxes.

bac II - atelier marc hĂŠnri collomb this residential building, which stands in a quite central zone of milan (italy), develops its form following the direction of the main street and stopping at the cross with a secondary one, so that part of the current weekly market can take place at the southern end of the site. the projection on the present square of two huge masses pierced by windows is emphasized by the use of charcoal cladding bricks and the white plaster on the window sides which amplifies the visual impact of holes. the use of bricks helps the building to establish a connection with the pre-existent residential ones, but at the same time their color differentiates it from the sorrounding constructions.

stop-overs of the “stone path”- tessin, ch
situated in castione (tessin, switzerland) this shopping mall occupies a 50’000 sqm area, at the crossing of highway, river, mountains and the small village at the other side of the main street and the train station. the site is near the new project of a football stadium which should be connected to the mall parking. inspired by the “stone path”, a very long way passing through quarries on top of tessin mountains and even not far from the site, the shopping mall brings every surrounding landscape element inside itself becoming a new focal point. starting from the basement, where a lowered square lays, a system of ramps brings visitors up like in a small quarry. at the same time, facades recall this big mass closed from external events but only oriented to its center: light is mainly provided by glazed internal facades and through many narrow slits in the external concrete walls. stone claddings are all original from local quarries.

bac II - atelier marc-hénry collomb the historical site of roquebrune cap martin, in côte d’azur (france), houses eileen grey’s house, le corbusier’s “cabanon”, atelier and “unité de camping” and the restaurant he renewed, the “étoile de mer”. considering the importance of this place, castled on roquebrune mountains just over the sea and connected to montecarlo and menton through the “corbusier promenade”, a logistical system of entrance, reception and information was needed. the idea was to close the site from the touristic path with a wall that, at one end, becomes a small building where visitors can enter slowly, perceiving the site little by little coming down from a long ramp. concrete construction underlines corbusier’s architectural expression.

the mediterranean library
45
mas II - atelier diploma michele arnaboldi the urbanistic connection of this building with the placa des las glories masterplan in barcelone (spain) (see p.77) is given by passing through a maritime pine mineral garden. this library finds its function in the formation of mediterranean parliament’s cultural-linguistic mediators (CLM) and at the same time in a wider pubblic reception at the access floor. by the paraphrase of the alveolar fascination of the architectural description that Borges gives about his “library of babel”, which reminds the complexe composition of mediterranean cultures, the building develops the idea of a structural fabric as more dense as more it grows vertically; through the staggering of the slim pillars at the ground floor, the structural span is halved at the specific reading floors, where, from a series of parallel beams, partitions hang down, articulating paths between rows of books. the fabric founds its weave in the 90° rotation of structure each floor ad reading rooms stand in the cross of these two directions. patios and spiral staircases help to connect more the floors each other, recomposing the puzzle of mediterranean cultural aspects. the brick facade recalls the expression of the most libraries in the city and the corten cladding windows and overhanging parts lightens the perception of volume and the irregular movement of holes in facade. atelier’s masterplan + situation (open-air space)

bac III - atelier martin boesch one of the last early ‘900 warehouse on the elbe river, in hamburg (germany), needed a reuse project. the theme was putting inside it an university of architecture without changing the old interesting hennebique system structure. taking out a central part of the building, damaged during the world wars and then badly rebuilt, a big spiral ramp is inserted and connects floors, becoming a meeting point for students. ateliers are divided one from the other by movable acoustic panels, classrooms are flexible and, where needed, glazed partitions separate silent or noisy spaces. horizontal circulation is possible throughout the whole lengthwise of the building.

mas I - atelier antonio citterio the aim of this project was the creation of an interactive kindergarten in a corner of parco sempione, in the center of milan (Italy). the concrete roof covers the internal spaces, which are completely connected with the natural surrounding by glass facades; the internal courtyard allow an open-air space where children can play. every classroom has a private door on educational vegetable gardens, domestic animals fence or educational water garden.

old representation of kempthall
mas II - atelier marianne burkhalter/christian sumi kempthall area, the old headquarter of maggi’s broth industries, is lying in a rough valley, enclosed by the highway, many streets and the railway on the ground and at the same time surrounded on the upper level by nature and forest. the feeling from the beginning was to think in different layers - different levels for the different uses needed. starting from the lowest level, at the ground floor, the project wants to reinforce the industrial character of the site, which is still very strong; after remarking the stripe-shape of the internal streets, suggested by the existing volumes, the aim is to re-evaluate the pre-existing buildings by giving them new representative uses. going through the longitudinal internal paths, four different public spaces characterize the quality of each part of the new “city, starting with the lowered bahnhof square, passing through the gastronomy square that faces the river and the railway, going to the central raised piazza, arriving to the park which embraces the manufacturing village. a second working layer of offices was defined over the public one, with the addition of semi-public roof gardens, which can be reached only from the inside and which house open air activities. the living level then (see p.25) stands on top of some others private roof gardens and relates with the green landscape around.

placa des las glories nowadays
the whole diploma atelier, composed by seven people, was involved in this masterplan. placa des las glories catalanes is a nerve center of barcelone (spain), where the three major streets of the city (diagonal, gran via and meridiana) meet and a complexe infrastructural system (tube and railways) crosses them. the atelier decided to get people (and not only traffic) into this difficult site by creating a huge square of 200’000 sqm as a european center of mediterranean culture. in order to achieve this idea, functions are (counterclockwise starting from top): a Mediterranean parliament which houses the union for the mediterranean meetings and a university of diplomacy and environmental issues, a residential building, a kindergarten, a hotel, a mediterranean dances school, a library (see p. 47), a water research center and, in the middle, a square with the big auditorium for the parliament, an open-air restaurant system and, at the bottom, the tube station. a bridge and a subway redirect the traffic and a system of ramps guarantees the access to the pedestrian raised square.

bac I - atelier riccardo blumer the first project at the accademia was about a labyrinth, in whose center stood the minotaur. an army of gypsum statues showing the features of the visitor is a psychological trial must be overcome to get out of the concrete labyrinth, which can be considered as an initiation rite to a new phase of everybody’s life.

bac I - atelier riccardo blumer the second project at the first year was a group one. the theme was a 1:1 non-architecture into the wood in tessin (switzerland), built by ourselves in wood materials. the idea was a room without any enclosure, growing out from the peak of a big rock on one side of the site; the structure was composed by a series of wedge-shaped tridimensional trusses and the cladding consisted in thin branches inserted in between of them. all the works were published by domus in september 2008.
