Monday Aug 13, Pre-Conference Focus on Distance Educatio This full day pre-conference event includes three workshops every distance education faculty should attend– however, it’s limited to just 40 participant – so register now! The Future of Distance Educatio John Seed, Pat James, Guests Room 974; 9:00am-12:00pm Join a group of your peers for a wide-ranging discussion about the future of Distance Education. In the first hour, we will be joined, via SKYPE, by Dr. Beth Harris and Dr. Steven Zucker, the co-founders of www.smarthistory.org. Their site, which features short, engaging videos about art historical topics, recently became affiliated with the Khan Academy, an emerging source of free online education. In the second hour we will watch a 20 minute video presentation y Salman Khan, the founder of the Khan Academy. In the remaining time we will ask and discuss the question that we feel need to be asked as we consider not only the future of Distance Education generally, but the specific methods and approaches that will serve us best at MSJC.

Developing Your Course Using Quality Standards Micah Orloff, Anna Stirlin Room 974; 1:00pm – 2:30pm Looking to improve your online course? Want to bring it to the next level? In this workshop, we will explore a research data-driven and globally recognized rubric that can be used to evaluate exemplary course design best practices to improve the engagement, collaboration assessment and learner support within your own courses. Many who have used the rubric report that the experience has improved their courses and made them stronger course designers – you can benefit from this tool as well! Going deeper – after the pr-conference workshop, sit in on the Bb Rubric series to learn and apply tips and tricks to make your coursean exemplary one! What is Web 2.0 and Why Should I Care? Anna Stirling,Micah Orloff Room 974; 2:30pm – 3:30pm You've heard the term floating around, but what does it actually mean? Web 2.0 sites allow users to interact with each other by creating user generated content. Well, that's great, but why should I care? There are many ways that Web 2.0 can be integrated into the classroom and daily tasks. In this workshop you will be introduced to four Web 2.0 sites: Tagxedo, Animoto, Glogster, and Jux, and see how they can be used separately or together to enhance engagement and learning.

There is a new kind of multiplication table for students that wil improve their retention of the basic multiplication tab products and enhance their understanding of multiplcation and long division skill. Students get a MrV's Tables Card and access to training PowerPoints. Student response in my Math50/Math51 classes has been overwhelmingly positive. Come get your own card and see why... Tuesday Aug 14 – MORNING Don’t Tell Them, Show Them with Screencastin Belinda Heiden Scot Room 974; 10:00am – 11:00am Room 974; 11:00am – 12:00pm In this workshop you will be introduced to Sceenr and Screen-O-Matic. These screencasting tools allow yoto capture your computer screen and present it in a video. Learn how to use your webcam with presentation software such as PowerPont and Prezi to make a video. CurricUNET Training Michelle Stewart Room 901; 10:30am – 12:00pm This session is intended for people who have not yet been trained on CurricUNET; however, people who have had training and want a refresher or who are still confused about what to do with CurricUNET are welcome to attend. We will not be discussing how to write curriculum but only how to work with the CurricUNET system and how the new approval process works within CurricUNET. Please email curriculum@msjc.edu prior to the workshop to get a user id if you do not already have one. When is learning happening in class? iClickers to the Rescue! Nick Reeves Room 927 (theater); 10:30am – 12:00pm iClicker (http://www.iclicker.com) is a student response system that can be used in any smart room for any type of course. iClickers make it possible to assess students in real time and determine whether learning has happened for your whole class and not just the vocal students in the front row. It is also possible to maintain attendance records, assess SLOs in a consistent way across sections, and conduct impromptu polling with iClickers. The biology department on the Menifee Valley Campus has been using iClickers since 2009 with great success. This session will provide a demonstration of iClicker technology.

Topics will include: Components of a grant proposal, researching and finding grant opportunities, determining the right "fit", and proposal planning and budgeting. During the presentation, participants wi identify a grant idea, find and esearch appropriate funding, and receive instruction and guidance for completing a grant proposal. Effective Practices in Online Teaching & Learning Discovering the Real World of Online Teaching Pat James Room 950; 1:30pm – 4:30pm This workshop is designed for faculty members who have been teaching online or who are considering teaching online. This first session is about what it is to be an online instructor, what you need to do to get a class ready for online delivery and will provide participants with an ovrview of online teaching that will make your experience, and your students’ experiences successful and manageable. Think of it -- your personal commentary added to key points of other instructional videos! Or make a complete production of your own all online in YouTube. Then, add caption (it's not hard- I'll show you and you'll do it yourself) to make your video accessible, compliant, and searchable! Record, edit, and deliver all with YouTube (so you can get your students doing videos too). In house data consistently demonstrates that students who participate in SI are more successful and less likely to withdraw than the students who elect not to participate. So much of SI's "success" is measured by the SI student performance. However, what about the as-of-yet unmeasured benefits realized by student SI Leaders? A panel of current and former SI Leaders will share their experiences with the MSJC SI Program and what they have gained from serving as an SI Leader. STEMinar: Faculty Meet & Greet STEM Faculty & Staff Room 930; 3:00pm – 4:30pm This session will be an opportunity for the STEM faculty at MSJC to come together and discuss new STEM projects for the upcoming year. The Discussion Board is an important tool for interpersonal interaction and can replicate the robust discussions that take place in the traditional classroom. Discussions can serve a range of purposes, such as: an online meeting place for social interaction among peers, an additional medium fo collaboration and the exchange of ieas, a medium to pose questions about homework assignments, readings, and course content, a way to demonstrate the understanding or application of course material, a record of discussion which can be reviewed at a later point, a graded activity that demontrates understanding or application of course material.
