CREATING A COLLECTION

TELLING A CORPORATE STORY DEVELOPING A FUTURE-DRIVEN PHILOSOPHY BUILDING A THEMATIC COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTING LOCAL CULTURE & COMMERCE

TELLING A CORPORATE STORY BUILDING COLLECTIONS WITH PURPOSE H&E EQUIPMENT SERVICES In addition to procuring a sophisticated collection for the executive suite, the gallery worked closely with the lead designer and CEO to create a special graphic installation from a picture taken on his phone of the companies cranes in the sunset. This was a special opportunity to tell their corporate story not only to their employees but also to national and international visitors. Through resources in printing and in house graphic designers, we produced a canvas diptych for the second floor entryway.

TELLING A CORPORATE STORY PROMOTING CORPORATE CULTURE LAMAR ADVERTISING Legacy corporations like Lamar have been part of Louisiana’s rich graphic history and have continued their corporate culture by leading the industry in creative design and development. While progress is their focus, it was important to the executives that their collection be focused on the associations and roots that made the company successful. The re-use and reinvention of previous products including signage, lettering and graphic material was the inspiration for the artwork program which served to augment their existing corporate collection.

A FUTURE DRIVEN PHILOSPHY STEWARDSHIP FOR THE FUTURE A national search was conducted for the primary lobby piece resulting in the selection of an acclaimed young graffiti artist from Berlin, Germany named Simon Kef. Simon, whose tag name is “KEF!, creates works for the public throughout Europe and has recently completed installations in Paris and within an Urban Outfitters flagship location in London. The artist painted on sheets of canvas that were applied as wall covering from ceiling to floor. As a nod to the firm, the artist included the signature orange color from the corporate logo within the installation. As part of the artwork package, the artist will be flown in to continue the mural directly on to the ceiling of the lobby area.

BUILDING A THEMATIC COLLECTION OUR LADY OF THE LAKE HEART AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE

BROTHER SUN Inspired by the Canticles by Saint Francis of Assisi, each floor of the HVI Tower embraces the theme of canticles like “Brother Sun”, “Sister Moon”, and “Mother Earth”. The interior finishes reflect the floor-specific theme followed by artwork in patient rooms and way finding corridors that use a range of media to depict the specific nature based cantical. Five floors of the center are populated with artwork telling a story that not only resonates with the parochial nature of the facility, but also serves to comfort and inspire patients, their families and hospital staff.

LOCAL CULTURE AND COMMERCE BEST OF LOUISIANA Following the directive of the design team from Gensler and Marriot, the art team was challenged to focus on an artwork program that showcased the best of Louisiana culture and commerce with an emphasis on sculptural and mixed media art pieces. The goal of the program was to highlight Louisiana artists and our connection to nature, industry and culinary arts though a variety of mediums. The focal wall is accentuated by birds in flight that climb up the wall of the main corridor and suspend in flight into the atrium. The iconic concept was developed and constructed as part of the custom program for Renaissance Hotel.

ARTIST DEVELOPMENT

ORIGINAL MARK MAKING MERIT IN QUALITY AND PROFESSIONALISM EDUCATION AND PROVENANCE NATIONAL CALL TO ARTISTS

ORIGINAL MARK MAKING DIPICHTING THE STORY OF OUR RIVERS

DOUG KENNEDY The Louisiana landscape serves as his inspiration. He often chooses colors representative of nature in his native Louisiana–the muted tones found in the swampy areas shrouded with Spanish moss, the saturated pink of an azalea blossom, the rich purple hue of a blooming iris. The natural palette brims with emotion and captivates the eye. The tinted, bold shapes can be as opaque as bayou water or as transparent as the morning fog in early Fall. Representative of shadowy memories or live inspiration, the brushstrokes mingle and collide. Kennedy’s most recent series features the shapes of the iconic Oxbowlakes of Louisiana with inspiration from antique maps that trace the multiple paths of the river as it channels toward the Gulf of Mexico. This culmination of influences has produced the “River Series” where Kennedy explores our cultural identity as it relates to our rivers, lakes and estuaries.

THE ARTIST’S PROCESS DEVELOPING A WORK OF ART

RYAN COBOURN Ryan Cobourn’s work focuses on depictions of the world around him. Usually based on drawings from observation, the paintings, through their creation, change and veer off into abstraction. The paintings’ content emerges through a protracted process of deconstructing and rebuilding of the image, based on memory and intuition. The Wolf Kahn and Emily Mason Foundation awarded him a grant for his curatorial effort, “Twenty-Five Painters Under Thirty-Five.” He is also the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. His work has been shown in small group exhibitions alongside the works of Arthur Dove, Milton Avery, and Bill Jensen.Recently LG Tripp Gallery in Philadelphia presented Cobourn’s work in the RSVP Summer exhibition, and his work was also featured in the Uniquely Louisiana show at the LSU Museum of Art. Ryan Cobourn received his BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and his MFA from Indiana University.

THE ARTIST’S PROCESS CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT

JOE WALTERS Joe Walters’ early inspiration was by the natural world that surrounded him. The South Carolina-based artist’s sculpture is inspired by the flora and fauna of the Low country marshes and black water rivers of the region. He creates site-specific installations of visual complexity and beauty which address issues involving human relationships with nature. Although his work is based on organic forms, taken as a whole the artist considers his work as abstract compositions. Elements such as birds, branches, fallen leaves, flowers, seedpods, aquatic life, etc. are carefully chosen elements that are ordered into grand sculptural installations structured within spiral and geometric forms. When viewed from various vantage points, the “interwoven” sculptures and the shadows they project against the wall create a luminous, tapestry-like effect reinforcing Walters’ theme of the interdependence of all living things.
