DEMOND MATSUO “The moment I heard my first love story I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere, they are in each other all along. —Jalal ad-Din Rumi

“This poem is how I think of my work. I search the world through seas of papers and inspirations, trying to arrive at a conclusion, a synthesis. The collage serves as a treasure map of sorts, an alchemical illustration pulling you through to understanding my overall meaning. In love we succumb to the new self that arises from the other. This is how I want you to think of my work. To understand you must look closely. There I leave you hints to my thoughts.”

KAROLINE SCHLEH In Karoline Schleh’s most recent work, she utilizes the technique of Fumage. “Fumage” is a term used early on to describe smoke drawings. Surrealist Wolfgang Paalen was on of the most well known artists to have experimented with this method. Some Victorian artists also worked this way. Today, very few artists use candle smoke to create their images.

ED PRAMUK “I use imagined spaces, architectural motifs, and references to traditional painting to call up metaphors for my spatial concerns. I want to create a dream about the real, and at the same time to satisfy my interest in manipulating space. The fulfillment of this idea occurs when the weight of emotion generated by each pictorial situation is in harmony with an interior image. The revelation of images is the goal of my work.

DAVID WILLIAMS David Williams’ mixed media paintings straddle the overt depiction of universal symbols and a cryptic abstraction of quiet ambivalence. The exact process is printmaking inks on printmaking paper without the use of solvents. The paper is adhered to the canvas with archival Matte medium. Williams hand paints on the surface with oil and alkyd medium. Then, he writes on the piece with pencil and pen.

RYAN COBOURN Ryan Cobourn’s abstract paintings make allusions to figure, landscape, and still life, depending on his mood. Drawing from traditional themes and subjects, the paintings’ content emerges through a protracted process of deconstructing and rebuilding of the image, based on memory and intuition.

PAUL YANKO “I develop my paintings systematically through an additive process of layering acrylic paint mixed with acrylic mediums onto masked areas. I initially establish sets of vertical and horizontal bands, applied to either a square or rectangular format, with function as an armature on which subsequent color shapes are layered. As I paint, I allow shapes to shift in registration in order to reveal varying amounts of underlying color.

JACQUELINE DEE PARKER “As both a painter and a poet, my work cross-pollinates, stimulating a close correspondence between these art forms. Just as words, sounds, and images rooted in emotional memory may inspire the composition of a poem, collage elements move me to build layers and texture, to respond to textual and cultural evidence, and to justify a pack-rat mentality, all the while engaged in a visceral construction of space.“

JOE WALTERS Although his work is based on organic forms, taken as a whole the artist considers his work as abstract compositions. The intensity and vigor of natural forms is beautifully recreated in the sculptures Walters creates with hand-modeled polymer clay, finished with many layers of sand and paint of varying colors to create a rich, textured surface.

KATE BLACKLOCK “My studio faces my garden, which I planted and have worked on for more than a dozen years. It is continually changing painting, controlled by my hand as well as the uncontrollable forces of nature and the seasons. I spend time looking, up close. SUSAN ROBERT Susan Robert re-investigates some of the iconic figures of art history by making derivative images from the classical motifs. She dissects the range of colors used by particular artists and studies the geographic environments which may have influenced them as well. She also uses a grid arrangement and has experimented with digital arrangements and collages, all of which help her contemporize the past.

ROBIN COLE “My art works are visual metaphors that contain ideas about structures and systems in the universe and their interconnectedness. I use number systems, structures found in nature and architectural ideas as visual elements in the work. The painting and drawing processes are very important formal elements in the works. The use of drips and splashes, erasures and marks reinforce certain dynamic qualities that speak about concepts of both growth and disintegration.

JAMES VELLA James Vella has been blowing glass for twelve years. He connects strongly with the ideas of decadences and overindulgence that is reflected from a Baroque attitude of glass design into classical rendering of the vessel. He has developed his own techniques and individual style while paying close attention to the traditions and importance of design that Italian glass has demonstrated since the 1600s. His work is an example of an extension into a modern day technical vocabulary that has moved towards a more sculptural way of working with glass.

LISA DI STEFANO Lisa diStefano’s work employs subtle details, respectful suggestions, and rousing palettes. A Baton Rouge native, she often chooses the Louisiana landscape as the subject of her paintings; enlivening trees, water, and marsh grasses with a diversity of hues and thin, multi-layered brush strokes. While her most recent work is an abstract interpretation of the landscape in motion, her past pieces have been compared to those of esteemed Louisiana artists George Dureau (1930-) and Alexander John Drysdale (1870-1934). Having learned and painted in the land of representation, Lisa now communicates to us from a more personal perspective. The result and gift to us is her ‘’Moving Impressions’’

“My art emerges from a childhood in south Louisiana, absorbing the relentless press of nature which is inescapable there. The images I make address the most primal, elemental aspects of my environment, gently prying back the layers of its mysterious, hidden depths. These photographs blur the line between what is there and what else is there.

CHUCK VOELTER “In coming to terms with my compulsion to make art I’ve sifted through a lifetime of observing the world and tried to make images that conveyed the yearning I feel, to connect with the minutiae and the marrow and make something of intrigue and lasting beauty. As with many others, my process has centered around nature and the processes of decay and re-birth; there is nothing iconic in any of my paintings other than might appear in nature; I specifically eschew the balanced aspects of nature to focus more closely on the odd, the asymmetrical, the shapes and spaces that are dimensionally created by light and mass, the reflections in moving water and how we perceive them.”

KEVIN GILLENTINE “I just want to capture a moment. Maybe not in the way it appears to the rest of the world, but in the way I see it in my head, which is always colored by my childhood memories of the rural south. I always hope my paintings look like memories rather than photographs.

MIA KAPLAN Mia Kaplan’s work is driven by her love for art as a visual journal. Her work explores different avenues including plein-air painting, abstraction, assemblage and sculpture. Her inspirations come from the environment of southeastern Louisiana where she currently lives. Kaplan’s work explores different avenues including plein-air paintings of Big Branch Marsh, botanical illustrations of native plants, abstraction, and small and large scale sculpture. In all avenues, what ties her work together is the sensitivity to movement and color she uses to reflect her natural surroundings.

DEDE LUSK Dede Lusk’s love for photography began in childhood, as she roamed the streets of her native Clinton, Louisiana, with a Brownie box camera. Although she now captures her black and white images digitally, she has not lost her love of roaming with a camera. Whether cruising the bayous and marshes of her homeland in south Louisiana, scrambling among the rocks on a mountain peak far away, or envisioning a still life in her studio, she seeks to capture the simple, yet profound, elements of nature that bring peace to the spirit. Her minimalist images, set against a canvas of snow, fog, sky, or water, evoke the rhythms and patterns of life, inviting the viewer to share a moment of intimate connection with the beauty of God’s creation.

BRAD BOURGOYNE “This is the site of sense.

The statue re-presents the body as an object-image that means. Yet, the statue is an absurd apparatus, easily broken open to reveal its inner workings. I give you then this faulted figure: the body as a thing but not just a thing. With it, I point to its surplus:

to the desire that makes meaning.

CECIL TOUCHON Touchon’s primary exploration of collage is contained within a series of works entitled the Fusion Series began in 1983 as a sort of visual diary. The Fusion Series has been described as Touchon’s ongoing obsession with manipulating color and shape. He constructs his compositionally engaging works from materials that are readily available to him. Seemingly random and abstract, Touchon’s thoughtful collages liberate the viewer from everyday meanings so that they are left to consider the visual impact of his work. He enjoys removing things from their original context, rendering a work ambiguous in its meaning. Though they appear spontaneous, each work has a keen sense of balance and color. There is a logical and thoughtout harmony inherent in his collage work. Because Touchon’s environment triggers his visual vocabulary, one feels a sense of the local rhythm when considering a body of his work.
