"In the year 1921, when I was aged six, I attended first grade‌ at Christmas time of that year, my teacher gave me the most wonderful of all gifts, a large sheaf of drawing paper and a large box filled with waxed crayons. She had observed that I would rather make drawings above all else. My life as an artist began at that moment, in that one room school house so long ago." - Harvey Harris Excerpt from Autobiograpy

By age ten, Harris was receiving professional training from Albertus Jones, a well-known Connecticut landscape painter. At age 18, Harris enrolled in Trinity College. The following semester he enrolled at Hartford Art School where a professor learned of his financial trouble and nominated him for a full-tuition scholarship which allowed him to enroll as a full time student.

After accepting a position at Larson College, he was notified by the dean that he was expected to acquire a BFA and an MFA. Harris met with the Dean of Art at Yale, and he received the two degrees in 3 years. During his time at Yale, Harris worked closely with Josef Albers and William Dekooning. Harris spent the remainder of his teaching career at Louisiana State University from 1967-1982, where his work became more densely packed with patterned figures created from dots and circular brush strokes. This phase of his work was shown in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, New York, Milan and Bologna.
