Marybird Perkins-Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center
Meditation Art Wall
A cancer center focused on patient-centric care and healing In the development of the Healing Arts Program for Marybird Perkins-Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center, the artwork consultation team set forth on a path of material discovery. In collaboration with the team of architects, designers, wayfinding consultants and cancer center administrators we cultivated an ideology for a facility focused on patient-centric care and healing.
Through the Healing Arts Program, the ultimate goal of our team was to comfort, encourage, and inspire patients, families, staff members and visitors to the Cancer Center.
Transforming a vision into reality The positive emotional theme motivated the artwork program to create a selection of work that contributes to the mission while still engaging the modern architecture of the hospital. The architects envisioned a glass wall in the main entrance as a focal point when entering the hospital. Our team set forth on a mission to transform this vision into a reality.

2. Artist Selection Process Our team provided prospective artists with the initial direction of the Healing Arts Program, including concept boards, facility renderings and architectural elevations. The resulting artist proposals were qualified and vetted through the gallery and after several presentations, local artist, Steve Wilson’s concept was the clear choice. Steve’s use of the gemeaux technique, a truly original process, was a modern reimagination of traditional stained glass. Gemeaux (as seen on the right): By abandoning the process of single sheets of glass leaded into a flat composition, gemeaux collages various colors, types and fragments of glass that add dimension to the surface of the wall.
3. Development and Installation After Steve’s initial concepts and preliminary drawings were refined, contruction and installation of the wall began. A structural grid underlies the artful application of the glass, solving the architectural challenge of using artwork as a part of the structure of the building.
Steve created an aesthetic bridge between the tradition and time-honored legacy of stained glass used in the past Marybird facilities with a modern vision realized within the process of gemeaux.
4. Completion After six months of production and construction, the installation was complete. On the outside of the wall, light is reflected off of the faceted pieces of cut glass in a unique way that creates a full spectrum of color from the first and second floors. The interior effect in the meditation room is diffused from the natural light of the atrium creating a space filled with transmitted light that softly illuminates the space in a sea of warm jewel tones. Our hope is that the experience with the Meditation Art Wall upon entering Marybird Perkins-Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center creates a unique, positive feeling of healing, lightfulness and tranquility.
