A graduate of Louisiana State University and former tenured professor at Northwestern State University, Robert Rector has been a vibrant artist throughout his career. Following in the modernist footsteps of his contemporaries like Frank Stella, Rector has focused non-objective painting and color field studies in his works. Beginning in his early pursuits, Rector painted on paper, exploring sculptural forms with strong saturated blocks whose interactions created a balance between shape and color.
“I love creating paintings on paper. Paper allows me to be more spontaneous and experiment more freely with new ideas. Many of my new directions came directly from doing studies on paper. There is also the tactile surface of fine paper that is a pleasure to work on. It is softer than wood or canvas and responds to paint in a totally different way. It seems to become a part of the paper and not just a layer of paint.� -Robert Rector

These works on paper are selections from 1971 through 2018 that helped create larger works on canvas. The ability to work on several paper pieces at the same time allows the artist to create variations of a theme and refine an idea before committing to a larger canvas. Some of these works were experiments and variations on a theme. Some were studies or maquettes for commissions or larger works on canvas.
