INFORMATION Ireland also known as the Republic of Ireland is a sovereign member of the European Union, which occupies most of the island of the same name. Its capital is Dublin, located east of the island. The country's only land border with Northern Ireland, one of the constituent states of the United Kingdom. The island is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and has the Celtic Sea to the south, St George's Channel to the southeast and the Irish Sea to the east. It is a parliamentary republic with an elected president who serves as head of state. The chief minister, the Taoiseach is appointed by the lower house of parliament, the Dรกil ร ireann. The modern Irish State won its effective independence from Britain in 1922, after a war of independence that ended the Anglo-Irish Treaty, while Northern Ireland chose to remain in the UK.
