Artist Statement. Sophie Hustwick is a UK based photographer whose work predominantly explores the everyday, specifically highlighting beauty in mundane life and fleeting moments. She is currently employing this method in a body of work being produced to exhibit in connection with her final year of study at Sheffield Institute of Arts, where she is undertaking a BA (Hons) Degree in photography. The desire to project to the viewer the value of banal occurrences is what drives and motivates her work. Colour, composition, natural lighting and the use of 35mm film are integral elements to her photographs. The images she produces could be compared to that of the 1989 David Lynch film, Blue Velvet, the images appear colourful and delicate but there is an undercurrent of darkness that is consistent throughout them. She exploits a diaristic aesthetic drawing influence from William Eggleston, Wolfgang Tillmans and Ed Templeton. Allowing the viewer to make their own interpretation of her quietly evocative images is of key importance and her photographs intentionally leave room for the mind to wander, to imagine fragmented narratives of the everyday, like a half heard conversation or a chapter torn from a book. By introducing mundane situations into an art context she is challenging viewers to contemplate the world around them and demonstrating the difference between seeing and seeing past what is obvious.
