Seven For Bassoon and Piano
Anne McAninch (Duration: 7 minutes)
Seven Everyone experiences, at one time or another, pain, despair, sorrow and grief. Everyone else has different ways of coping with it; sometimes a good cry (whatever that means), talking, lashing out, fleeing, or burying themselves in what they love. As a type of theme and variation, Seven is the musical representation of the seven stages of grief: Shock and Denial, Pain and Guilt, Anger and Bargaining, Depression, Reflection, and Loneliness, The Upward Turn, Reconstruction and Working Through, and Acceptance and Hope. This work is also built on elements all centered around the number seven; there are seven section each with the number of measures being a multiple of seven, with a tempo marking that is a multiple of seven and the duration of the piece is, of course, approximately seven minutes. Performance Notes:  Depending on the performance space, the pianist will want to have either a closed lid or quarter stick because the denseness of the chords could overpower the bassoon in the forceful sections. Also, dynamic markings are suggestions to show the important lines and give the work a deep feeling of emotion, but the bassoon should be prominent at all times.  Accidentals do not carry into other octaves.  Accidentals carry though the measure.
