Program Notes There are times within everyone’s life that their world may seem very dark with no sign of light; a heaviness without a sign of reprieve. The expression “every cloud has a silver lining” means that even the worst events or situations have some positive aspect. For some, the silver lining might be something they can find easily but for others, it is not. For those that find it hard, they may only be able to find it when it is within arm’s reach waving in front of them. Silver Lining is just that. The work starts by setting a somewhat dim stage that only grows darker until a glimmer of silver breaks through and stays while the world gets a little lighter and easier to manage. Composer Biography A native of Elk County, Pennsylvania, Anne McAninch is an active composer and teacher in Madison, Wisconsin. She received her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where her principal instrument was the bassoon. After relocating to the Washington, D.C. area, Anne taught Instrumental Music in the Prince George’s County Public Schools, studied piano with Deborah Brown at the North Potomac School of Music, and composition with Frances Thompson McKay at Levine Music. After teaching music for eight years, Anne decided her true love was writing music and received her Masters of Music in Composition from James Madison University where she studied composition with Eric Guinivan and Jason Haney as well as bassoon with Susan Barber. Anne is a member of ASCAP, Society of Composers, Inc. and the American Composers Forum. Currently, Anne is the composer-in-residence at James Madison Memorial High School, and she is pursuing her Doctorate in Musical Arts in Composition at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studies composition with Laura Schwendinger and conducting with Scott Teeple. Anne McAninch’s compositions have been described as “harmonically interesting” and “rich in orchestral color.” Anne has had readings with the James Madison University Symphony, University of Wisconsin-Madison Orchestra, the Del Sol Quartet, and the world-renowned JACK Quartet as well as performances with flute prodigy Emma Resimini. Anne enjoys writing for mixed chamber ensembles and exploring various orchestration combinations. To learn more about Anne and her music, please visit www.annemcaninch.com.
