Through Her Eyes

Grace Jones

Editorial

“Instead of penetrating, I think [men] all need to be penetrated once. Then they’ll understand what it’s like to receive instead of give.” 1

Grace Jones is an 80’s famous Jamaican model and singer, who moved to New York when she was 12 years old. Her parents already left Jamaica, when she was 6. As a model she appeared on the covers of Elle, Vogue, and Stern and became a fashion icon. Grace became famous with her cover of ‘Chanson’ from Edith Piaf. Her androgynous image with the famous blockhead haircut became her trademark. This Zine is dedicated to her work and life advise to others. I think she is a really inspiring person, because of her open mindedness. Everybody can use a little of her warrior DNA.

Have you always been a feminist? I don’t consider myself a feminist. I don’t put labels on things, really. I stand up always for being a human. The fact that I am a woman gives more power to it, but I stand up for being a human being. I don’t like the fact that women should be this way and stay in their place. I’m more than a feminist. I believe we are stronger. Women are stronger.

Be your own Sugar Daddy.

I think men become weak because they’re not allowed to exercise their emotion. They have been told that by showing emotion they’re showing weakness and I believe that’s why women are stronger; in an emotional situation, I believe that women will win every time. Most of the time, anyway. I’m not going to say all men are weaker than women. I think the men that embrace their female side are the stronger men.just mental.

Is there any story about yourself that you’d like to correct? [Laughs] Hell, no. No, never! My age they have all wrong and I still don’t want to set that straight [laughs].

8

Il est entré dans mon coeur Une part de bonheur Dont je connais la cause C’est lui pour moi Moi pour lui Dans la vie Il me l’a dit, l’a juré pour la vie Et dès que je l’aperçois

When he takes me in his arms And whispers love to me Everything’s lovely It’s him for me and me for him All our lives And it’s so real what I feel This is why Et dès que je l’aperçois Alors je sens en moi, mon coeur qui bat La vie La vie en rose, la vie en rose Ohh, la vie La vie en rose La vie en rose, la vie en rose La vie en rose, la vie en rose La vie en rose, la vie en rose La vie en rose, la vie en rose Je t’aime voir toujours

Grace’s parents were both young and strict Pentecostals (her mother was the niece of a high-ranking bishop in the church). Before she turned 6, her parents immigrated to America to build a new home. According to Jones, they left their children in Jamaica because they “believed it was for the best,” since children growing up in America weren’t disciplined sternly enough. Instead, Grace and her four siblings were raised by her mother’s mother “and her

Eventually, her parents sent for their children, and a 12-year-old Grace and her siblings joined them in New York (where her youngest brother was born). Although she was a shy and scared child, Jones became a rebellious and outspoken teenager whose behavior often clashed with her religious upbringing.
