Ellen Levine Dodd grew up in a small New England beach town near Boston, Massachusetts. She has been doing artwork all her life. Starting with art lessons after school to university degrees in painting, photography, and paper making, she has had an eclectic and wide-ranging education in art, studying with many well known painters, photographers, and digital printers. Her extensive travel through out the United States, Europe and the Middle East has had a strong influence on her art. Ellen has lived in the San Francisco Bay area since the 1970s, after moving here from New Mexico, where she lived after leaving school in New England. As a professional artist, Ellen has worked with leather, paper making, wood work, photography, drawing and painting. Currently, she works full time as a painter, photographer, and printer in her studio in downtown Novato, California. Her work is boldly colored and richly textured, with multiple layers, scratched, sanded, carved into and drawn onto. Her vision is emotional, expressionistic, and positive; with brightly colored gestural brushwork, a strong sense of story and symbolism, and a passionate reference to the preservation of the landscape.

“The act of painting, for me, is an internal navigation based on instinct and rooted in nature. My paintings are attempts to transfer sensory memories to a visual reality. I seek rhythm and contradiction in my hues, marks and textures. Each painting is an attempt to tap into the beauty that appears spontaneously at my feet and in my memories—if only I am willing to pay attention.” Joyce Howell Joyce is a spontaneous, intuitive painter who is inspired by the nuance of color relationships. Living and working on the Colorado River provides ample opportunity to observe color changes relating to atmosphere, temperature, wind, time of day and season. Even the most pastoral scene, when observed carefully is riotous in color, texture, pattern and value. Observation of the elements, textures of plant materials and the water as it is affected by depth, wind, light and shadow are played out with paint in the studio. Joyce graduated from the University of Tulsa with a B.S., Business Administration; B.A. from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Fine Art; and Texas Tech University with a Master of Fine Art.
