SPREAD THE WORD Besides the hope that Shaka goes viral on social media we want to add communication to our product as well. Labels, if possible made of upcycled plastics, with a message. We will investigate the options for give-aways, like upcycled bags or a keychain. We will be active on Instagram, Facebook and our website with tips and tricks for a sustainable lifestyle.

STORY Used is better than virgin Where does the virgin concept come from, anyway… our Mother Earth is 4.5 billion years old. It’s a stretch to call any Earth associated material “new” or “virgin”. And to those who say that virgin plastics are a pure product of man, I challenge you to create truly new matter. We are able to manipulate, and no more than that. For our attempts to create, including plastics, we just chose the path of least resistance in terms of money, that we were aware of to this date. Without too much consideration to impact.

We need to look at our economy and processes in a new or virgin way, if you like. This may mean stepping away from mass consumerism, making conscious and more local choices, regaining our understanding of the supply chains we participate in. It could mean we redefine what success means. But really, is that a bad thing? What if it turns out we can achieve this without a material set back in our standard of living? What if it would bring about really interesting new fields of work? And… What if it would make us happier? We are committed to explore this option, one step at a time, locally. Thinking circular. Not with the intention to make a lot of money, but to see if it can be done. And if it can be, and we can sustain ourselves and our families, there is nothing that will stop us! Alright Jones’ family, let’s take you on. We refuse to keep up with you anymore. It’s boring, quite frankly.

SHAKA PRODUCTS Shaka products are unique, because of the material used. They are made of contaminated plastic waste, unsuitable for other “mainstream” recycling processes. Every product aims to solve our plastic pollution problem in baby steps. But it doesn’t stop there. The materials are truly upcycled, which means the design is based in usability, combined with pretty looks. Our products aim to provide you with a light and happy life. Surf style, laid back, conscious and connected with nature.

ABOUT SHAKA

The shaka sign, sometimes known as “hang loose, is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii, and surf culture. It consists of extending the thumb and smallest finger while holding the three middle fingers curled, and gesturing in salutation while presenting the front or back of the hand; the hand may be rotated back and forth for emphasis. The shaka sign was adopted from local Hawaiian culture and customs by visiting surfers in the 1960s, and its use has spread around the world. It is primarily used as a greeting gesture or one to express thanks, acknowledgement, or even praise from one individual to another.

Anne

We are two accountants and an interior designer by day, and we want to actually contribute to making this world a better place for our children. Not just talk about it, but do something about it. We live in Australia and The Netherlands and have been friends for 20 years. So how, you might ask. We want to start off by setting an example how the most contaminated plastic waste can be turned into beautiful products: - Safeguarding our natural environment from more pollution - Promoting our beautiful local culture through handcrafted, stellar products - Helping council divert even more complicated waste streams from landfill - Helping young people grow craft skills - Providing knowledge and skills for other social entrepreneurs so that benefits can be amplified
