Jamie Lee Curtis on ‘Halloween’, Exploring Generational Trauma & Laurie Strode in 2018

Q: When you heard about the possibilty that Laurie Strode was comingg back, what was your first reaction? Jamie Lee Curtis: That was a call from Jake Gyllenhaal, “My friend David, who I love an had a really good experience with, wants to talk to you about a thing. You’ve gotta call David.” So, we spoke, and he sent me the script. I read it, and I called him that day. The two things that popped in to my mind, right when I read it, and I read it on vacation, was that there was a scene where Allyson went on a run in the

neighborhood and then she went into her house to get ready for school, and she opened the closet door. It’s not in the movie, but that was on page 2 and I thought, “Oh, that’s beautiful.” Forty years ago, I ended in that closet, and now, here was my granddaughter, opening the closet and getting ready for school, to go on with her day. I thought that was beautiful. I thought the journalists were great, and that they were British was just perfect. Right away I was like, “Okay, this is fantastic.” I finished it ans thought it was great. Q: This film really explores

trauma on the female psyche and how tha timpacts your character and her daughter. Curtis: Trauma is generational. I’m sure many of us have friends whose grandparents or parents were Holocaust survivors, and you see how that trauma goes through generations. Obviously, that’s a very heavy thing to reference, and this is fiction, but trauma is generational and it is passed on, unless it’s helped. Of course, now there are a lot people that spend their lives helping people through traumas. There are a lot of trauma centers and a lot of recov-

ery centers for that. There was nothing in 1978. I believe Laurie Strode wemt to school on November 1st. I think she went to school with a bandage on her arm, and maybe some stitches from the emergency room. I think her parents sent her back to school. And of course, two days before, she was an intellectual honor student, heading off to be the valedictorian of her class. She was gonna get out of Haddonfield and go off and expand her mind. Two days later, she was a freak. Two days later, she walked down the hall and everybody was like, “Oh my god, there’s Laurie

Strode. Holy shit! Hi, Laurie!” That’s the trauma that violence does to people. It took 40 years for her to work through it. Obviously, she had no help, nothing. What I love about the Laurie Strode we meet now is that the roles are completely reversed, where she’s the predator and Michael Myers is the prey. CURTIS: The first day in Laurie’s house, when I first walked on my set, I walked in about an hour before everybody else because I just wanted to live in the house for a minute. There’s a bookcase, and there was a book on the shelf, called Let Us Prey, P-R-E-Y. And I took a picture of it and sent it to Jason Blum and Bill Block, and I said, “There’s your tagline for the movie.” In a way, she also has become Loomis, the way he was in the movie, because she is now saying what Loomis said the

whole movie, which is, “You have to kill him. He must be killed.” All of his rhetoric about Michael Myers is Laurie’s rhetoric now. So, yes, he becomes the prey. But Let Us Prey? Come on!

pair of jeans, but not too tight.” That’s what Laurie’s back to school clothes were. That’s when I knew it was a character. You have to remember, I’m a bit of a smart ass. I’m a ham. I’m embarrassing to my family, all the time. I How much of this charam just an embarrassment acter was a collaboration because I’m this person, between you, John Carpen- all the time, and I’ve been ter and Debra Hill, when it this person since I was 11. came to creating her? So, the beauty that I got to go out with of it for me was that John the costume woman. So, get the part, that was beautifulskirt that matches the ly written and fun. But sweater, and those white Laurie Strode is a full stockings. And then, get a character, and it was very

different for me. I, quite frankly, should have been cast in the smart ass role, or the P.J. Soles part. I am that, “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Michael Myers has to go,” girl. I was a cheerleader in high school. The fact that he cast me as the intellectual, thinking, quiet girl, at a time when people asked me what size jeans I wore, made me understand that I was an actress. And really, I became an actress because of it. I don’t think I was an actress before. I think I was just a performer. I became an actress on Halloween. I’ll literally start to sob at the table, and that will be embarrassing, but I really do believe that (director) David [Gordon Green] gave me a chance to be an actress again. I sold yogurt that makes you shit for seven years, and it’s really beautiful to be able to have done something that has some depth. It’s been amazing. Halloween is now playing in theaters.

How to Plan the Ultimate Horror Movie Marathon

For diehard horror fans,

ror movie marathon. In ideal circumstances, this is done at the movies, preferably with a midnight screening, and even better when it’s a double feature. Choose your location

The ideal location for a horror movie marathon is the movie theater. If that’s not an option, a drive-in movie theater is a second best place. If you’re opting for a night at home, make sure to stock up on snacks, get the lighting right, and take the phone off the hook.

Set The Mood

If you’re going to dedicate an entire day to the art of horror movie mrathoning, then do ir right. It needs to be dark.

The only source of light should come from a fire in the fireplace, candles, Jack-olanters, or that cool string of ghost lights you got at Target and have strung over the door. Once you have the lighting right, then get the temperature right. It needs to be cold. Open a window and let that cold fall breeze in - let the smell of fall completely encompass you.

Corin Hardy Interview: The Nun Screen Rant: The question I have is with The Nun is obviously a spinoff character from The Conjuring franchise. How was this character chosen? And when you first got the script, when you were going through it, what were some of the ideas that immediately jumped at you? Corin Hardy: So, when I got the script, obviously, I was familiar with The Conjuring 2 and the fact that James [Wan] had introduced this character, well, there for not very long. So, it was quite a unique situation, I think, to get to make a movie which wasn’t a sequel or remake. But that was of a character that exists in movie and give them their own story. So, it was exciting. And then actually discovering the

story was more of a, almost its own different genre to the other movies. It’s got more of an adventure. More of a journey or mystery investigation aspect to it. Which I really loved. And there was, just for me, I look for movies which I can kind of lose myself in. Or the idea of just trying to transport you. And it was so nice to see this story taking place in 1952 in Romania. Sort of a very classic gothic horror story. It harks back to the movies I grew up watching the Hammer horror movies, Dracula, some Italian horror movies. And it just felt like an opportunity to really dive into a place. And when you read certain scenes and set pieces, my sort of excitement bells start ringing. This concept of perpetual adoration,

which I’d never heard of, which is almost like 24 / 7 praying to keep the evil at bay. So, I immediately was like, oh, this is going to be… in fact, in the script, originally it was sort of mentioned, but it wasn’t really seen. So, something which I felt like we really want to do something shown. Screen Rant: Now, you kind of made headlines last week when YouTube kind of pulled your trailer because it was too scary. Do you look at that as a badge of honor? How do you look at that? Corin Hardy: It’s a really nice, unexpected part of the promotion of this movie. I mean, you can’t plan that sort of thing. So, of course, it

was… At the same time, I didn’t want to upset anyone. And if people genuinely were having a bad time watching the trailer, I mean, then I wouldn’t want to offend them. So, maybe it should have been taken down. But, yeah, it’s a certain badge of honor. Screen Rant: I thought the trailer was brilliant and it did scare me. I’m not going to lie. It did have that jump-scare. But speaking of jumpscares, that’s an integral part of any kind of horror filmmaking. What’s

Screen Rant: Now, this movie we shot totally in Romania. I talked with you at San Diego. And you talked about how you kind of blessed sets and some creepy things happened. Corin Hardy: [LAUGHS] I didn’t bless them. Screen Rant: I’m never going to Romania. But congratulations on the film. It’s amazing. Great job.

your philosophy on that? And how do you execute that technique? To keep the audience off balance a little bit? Corin Hardy: Yeah. That’s just what you’re trying to do is keep the audience off balance. Everyone’s become very sophisticated to horror stories. And you see, it’s very hard to just try and keep someone unsure of what’s about to happen next. In a story, and in a lead up to a scare, for me, it’s a balance of trying to just keep an overall tension with-

Corin Hardy: Thank you so much. The Nun is a spinoff of The Conjuring 2 and the fifth movie in The Conjuring series. In 1952 Romania, a Catholic priest and a novice are investigating the mysterious suicide of a nun. The film gained mainstream attention when YouTube pulled The Nun’s six-second ads after jump-scare complaints. The ads fooled viewers into turning up the volume right before the titular character appeared with a

in the story and piece, regardless of whether the scares are going to jump out at you. Whether that kind of the overall atmosphere just is feeling more and more ominous. It helps that, if you’re feeling on edge and you’re starting to grip the seats and get sweaty, and you don’t know whether there’s going to be a scare or if something’s going to come out of the shadows. And then also, it’s nice to not do that so that they don’t know. Oh God, I thought something was. And something comes from another place.
