Innovators in Cleaning
NOVA NEWS: So, what can you expect from this edition of NovaNews: It is summer and we are ready with a new edition of NovaNews before you all go on summer vacation. In this edition, please read about our distributor in The Azores - the small group of islands in the Atlantic. Or get more knowledge about sediments in CIP - cleaning - what is it and how do we deal with it! One of our chemicals - nitric acid is classified with a new hazard symbol - poisonuos! And among other articles - find some facts/advice regarding dish washing which can be helpful if you work in the Horeca segment.
THE AZORES The Azores are a group of islands in the Atlantic, of volcanic nature, part of Portugal. The climate is mild all year around, with frequent rain, creating conditions for a always green landscape with lusty vegetation and excellent pastures. Milk production is one of the main economic activities in the region, with great tradition is several local types of cheese and most recently on certified 365 days on pasture dairy products. Very often you can find portable milking parlors, that follow the cows during pasture rotations, providing an extra challenge in terms of the hygiene procedures. Novadan´s partner is Cooperativa União Agrícola / Associação Agrícola de São Miguel, the most important local cooperative. Its’ activities are on service (veterinary, insemination, hoof trimming, herd improvement, accountancy, crop advisory, …) and selling equipment and production factors. Being a cooperative, it was very important to have a sales strategy that hold enable to help the farmers in achieving better performance and low sales pressure. Novadan provided the products and know how, training the technical staff of Cooperativa União Agricola.
If you have any ”stories/experiences with Novadan products” from your country that could be of interest to our other partners/ distributors, please share it with us by emailing details (and images) to hoy@novadan.dk
This problem solving approach originated excellent results, with market recognition of the hygiene expert from Cooperativa União Agricola and the high quality products from Novadan. Communication and training of the farmers has been also a key point in this partnership, with frequent publication of technical articles about hygiene on the cooperative monthly newspaper. Additionally, we promoted 8 seminars for farmers in 2016 and already 4 in 2017, on milking machine hygiene and udder health.
Or if you are anxious to know more about some topics, which you would like us to write about - again please contact hoy@novadan.dk

Jopo film has proven itself as a top quality teat dip, with excellent results in both disinfection and skin care, being a reference in terms of iodine in the Azores.
Both partners are already a reference in terms of dairy hygiene, proving right the strategy of implementing high quality products with a dedicated and very technical approach.
Perfect Alka has also been a start in terms of milking machine cleaning, even in the toughest conditions.
The challenge in the long term is to become market leaders, being already on the path for that.
Recently Oxidan Extra is also making its name, replacing chlorine for liner disinfection or milking machine disinfection, as a more effective and residue free alternative.
P.s: If you visit the Azores, don’t miss eating the famous local steak in the cooperative restaurant!
SEDIMENT Development within CIP and crate washing applications increasingly involves recycling and reuse of the washing water over a long period of time and therefore, I would like to inform about the following issues. In CIP cleaning the chemicals continuously dissolves proteins and fats. However, in some areas, the meat industry differs from dairy, brewery and the beverage industries.
1. White sediment: Blood and fat is often deposited in a thick layer in the systems and has a tendency to be difficult to dissolve, suspend and emulsify. Typically, a white layer/sediment is created at the bottom of a CIP or washing tank. This layer is made of organic material such as fat and protein-residues as well as some lye. Often this causes questions if this is metal precipitations or degradation of alloys. It is NOT! This phenomenom is often seen in blood CIP where the cholesterol in blood causes clots which in
extreme cases simply places itself at the bottom of the tank. The reason for this is probably due to a bit colder CIP cleaning in the meat and fish industries. The described sediment is not a big problem, however it is recommended to change the CIP liquid if is gets solid. As long as it is fluid it will - eventually - dissolve in the water. 2. Black sediment At this point, it is time to check if we are dissolving metal alloys. It may be carbon that is drawn from the metal due to poor / unsuitable steel quality. It can also be packaging material.

3. Brown sediment The reason for this can be ordinary diry particles (probably only in case of crate washing). It can be rust or it can be algae / ocher. No matter what kind of sediment you find, it is a good idea to carry out the coffee filter test of the sediment which often gives the result of one of the above reasons.

NITRIC ACID
Information about Nitric Acid In the future, products containing nitric acid will be classified with a new hazard symbol. Products which contain more than 26% nitric acid will be classified as “toxic if inhaled”. As a consequence of this, all products in this category will get more hazard statements and the hazard symbol “Poison” on the label. Today, this product is classified as metal corrosive and corrosive. The reason for the change The reason for this change is due to European suppliers that are stregthening their classification due to updated information in the Reach dossier. Consultations regarding the new classicification of nitric acid has taken place and it is expected that the classification of the substance will be harmonised by ECHA (The European Chemicals Agency) at the beginning of 2018. As developer of recipes, we are obliged to follow our suppliers’ classifications and the changes will therefore be valid during the coming months. Novadan initiates action Due to this change, Novadan has already initiated a process in order to meet the new situation. We work in our Development Dept. with substitution of the products containing more than 26% nitric acid. In some cases, we will continue to sell the current products which contain more than 26% nitric acid – then the label and safety data sheet will clearly show that the product is toxic if inhaled. What does this mean to the users/customers As has always been the case, the user of the products will be able to find information in the safety data sheet and product informattion sheet about necessary precautions when using the products. Additional rules Some countries may have additional rules/precautions that have to be taken into consideration when using products with nitric acid. Therefore we recommend to be aware of country-specific rules in this matter. As an example: Customers in Denmark has to get a poison-license in order to buy a product labelled “Poison”. Novadan is willing to answer any question that might occur regarding this new classification - and we will inform you as soon as we get more information about this.
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is the driving force among regulatory authorities in implementing the EU’s groundbreaking chemicals legislation for the benefit of human health and the environment as well as for innovation and competitiveness. ECHA helps companies to comply with the legislation, advances the safe use of chemicals, provides information on chemicals and addresses chemicals of concern.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
If your customers weren’t satisfied, they wouldn’t be your customers at all. So why all the fuss about measuring customer satisfaction? Yes, it can make you feel good that they are satisfied with you on an overall level, but you probably knew that already. What really matters are the pockets of dissatisfaction that your customers have. The devil’s in the detail, so search for those details where your customers experience problems, challenges and frustrations. That’s the way to be inspired to do something extraordinary. Just listen to Tom Peters, the grand old man of business management: “Nearly 100% of innovation is inspired by people who are supremely pissed off by the way things are.”
Disruptive innovation Does it work to identify the customers’ ’pains’? Absolutely. Just take a look at Netflix, Uber and Airbnb. Netflix doesn’t have cinemas. Uber doesn’t own cars. Airbnb doesn’t possess rooms. Yet they are highly successful because they found a smarter way of handling the market’s “pains”. Netflix dealt with the pain of having to go to a shop to rent a movie. Uber made it more user friendly to order transportation from A to B. And Airbnb provides a vast selection of rooms at low prices compared to hotels.
by inspiration of different articles and wise peoples’ words.
These companies could not have come up with their successful and innovative solutions without a pretty good idea about their target group’s problems, frustrations and challenges, which together make up pains. So, how can you learn from this. The customers typically don’t know the optimal solution to their pains themselves. But if you “translate” your customers’ most serious and frequent pains into solutions you can provide, you will not only get satisfied customers but also gain market shares. After all, why not learn from Henry Ford who supposedly said: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” So instead of asking what the market wanted he gave the market what it needed and that catapulted the growth of the Ford Motor Company. Your customers can’t be creative on your behalf, they can’t tell you what they want. But if you can ”read” and ”understand” your customers challenges and needs and based on that knowledge make innovative solutions for your customers - then you are far ahead of your competitors.

Good advice for cleaning of canteens and industrial kitchens Achieve better cleaning results with these few simple advice
by Tommy Bergmann-Johansen Sales Manager - HORECA
Perfect result Dosing dish washing detergents based on conductivity ensures the best dish washing quality. Therefore it is a good idea to invest in a dosage system with embedded conductivity meter. The meter monitors the water conductivity and reduces process chemicals.
If the dish washing machine has lime deposits it can be due to the water treatment system that does not work properly. In this case, the customer’s supplier (or another professional) has to repair the system. After repair it will be a good idea to descale the dish washing machine with ordinary lime remover. It is important that the customer’s water treatment system is checked regularly in case of calcium issues as calcium deposits on the heating element increases energy costs as the machine needs longer time to warm up.
Furthermore, a dosage system ensures that the customer neither uses too much or too little detergent. If the customer uses too much detergent it is a more expensive solution and it does not improve the cleaning as we cannot be sure that the final rinse will remove all the soap from the service. If the customer - however - uses too little soap, the service will not get clean and deposits and leftovers can be seen.
Kill the bacteria Effective cleaning and disinfection kills 99,9% of the bacteria in kitchens and it is always a good idea to finalize the cleaning procedure with disinfection. But remember, disinfection can never replace cleaning. Surfaces must be cleaned before disinfection which means that two working processes are required. Clean first and disinfect afterwards.
Deposits are expensive Does the customer have red or slimy deposits in the dish washing machine? These are caused by bacteria in the dish washer which is due to too low soap levels or because the content of protein- or fat in the water is too high. Dish washing machines are moist and hot environments where fat- and protein residues like to grow - and that creates bacteria. The problem can be solved by using a dish washing detergent containing chlorine which cleans and disinfects at the same time. Otherwise, the dish washing machine can be cleaned with soap containing chlorine when necessary.
Two methods are good for disinfection. Traditional disinfection and with alcohol. Traditional disinfection means mixing a disinfectant with water - add it to the cleaned surface for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off in cold water. This method is effective for flat surfaces like tables, floors and walls. If using alcohol, use a sprayer with high alcohol content on the surface, wait and wipe it off with a clean cloth. This method is good when disinfecting tools and machines.
