“The MONIKA CHIANG collection is not designed for a woman of a specific age or who lives in a particular place – it’s all about her attitude and spirit. She is a fashion-forward woman with a deep appreciation of other cultures,” Monika explains. “I design with her in mind. I want my collection to help empower women to dress with confidence and feel comfortable, without sacrificing style.”

monika chiang Officially reaching its paper anniversary celebrating 1 year, Monika Chiang helmed by its namesake Monika Chiang is the rebel child that everyone wants. Launching fall of 2011, Chiang with the help of the billionaire businessman behind Tory Burch, C Wonder and many more Christopher J. Burch. The brand, a reflection of Monika’s own personal style echoing a wanderlust and appreciation for exotic cultures is making major leeway in a seemingly crowed industry. Shortly after launching Chiang’s full debut collection back in 2011 the brand rolled out two beautifully crafted and designed standalone location both located in central shopping destinations for eachs respected locals and the worldwide traveler. The first located on the famed Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles, California alongside the likes of Alice + Olivia, Kitson, Chanel and Ted Baker, with the other nestled in New York City within the ever so chic SoHo. Both consisting of the labels entire product assortment from shoes, ready to wear, accessories, handbags, and lingerie season after season. All this being no small feat for a brand barely blowing out it’s one year candle, a feat in which many new and up and coming designers long for. Yet, with so much steam behind the label will it find its niche, here’s to hoping once they truly find their legs it’ll take off running? With an ever growing and faithful clientele the brand is sure to keep move in the right direction. Along with their trending wedged sneakers and their edgy detailed twist on classic pieces like pencil skirts and sheath dresses the brand has a firm grasp on trend development, allocation, and placement along with a real massmarket appeal to every stylish woman willing to make a fierce yet glamorous statement.
ABOUT THE COLLECTION: Designed as a reflection of Monika’s own signature style, the collection evokes modern glamour steeped in an elegant nonchalance. Seemingly disparate and contradictory sensibilities combine in the most unexpected ways – deep sensuality and confidence exist alongside a subtle vulnerability, the softness of feathers set against steely metal studs, bursts of rich pigment mingled with soft earth tones and tough black leather paired with sensual sheer knits. This finely wrought tension is at the heart of the MONIKA CHIANG brand.

fall of man So many questions are unsure. In this forsaken hell I screen the blackness for a cure And on my knees I yell. Emptiness meets me in the sky Emptiness travels far and wide Emptiness watched me while I cried Emptiness scrapes away my pride. I turn to prayers but no one’s there And in a hole I sink I turn to glare but no one stares Ashes too deep to think. Beloved Rachael, angelic beauty, You filled me with your love Intoxicating smells, so fresh and fruity. An Angel sent you from above. A different look takes place on you From these unfiltered eyes The scaling skin comes into view Sin soaks your flawless skies. A little boy perched high on cliffs This prayer I pray to you. Forgive me with your unseen gift And show me what is true. These shoulders burden life and death Another sleepless night I cannot live without your breath So guide me with your light. -Aaron Mann

Charged with the task of shooting Boy’s cover with the amazing Ashley Rickards, Bradford had the biggest challenge ahead of him; a challenge to convey the femme fatale vision of creative directors Allan and Ashley while still capturing Ashley’s spark and whit. We’ll allow you to be the judge and the jury, but we couldn’t be any happier with the outcome.
Annex always tries to work with the best and brightest, and Connie is the brightest of them all. Extremely talented, professional, humorous, and best of all easy to work and communicate with and god knows working with Allan isn’t an easy task in its self.
The art of makeup or what we like to call paint is something that when one really perfects makes one true commodity in the editorial community. Bringing Teter into the Annex world as one of the very first contributors for Annex was a no brainer, and when conceptualizing Exile we knew that in order to really convey the story within the story we needed an artist and Kale is a true artist in every sense of the word.

A writer with the ability to inform without being stale or over bearing is something hard to come by and Ms. Cooper has claimed her grip and thankfully Annex is to benefit from it.

q&a: After emerging yourself in the fashion world through a camera lens what was the push that made you turn to designing? After working with the master designers of the world and numerous high fashion magazines I decided to take my vision of fashion and what fashion means/ represents to and embrace it with my individuality and my sense of uniqueness through the art of designing.
Maria Felix inspired your “Enamorada” collections have you had any other muses? I have admired many of the classic fashion icons through the different decades such as Grace Kelly, Jackie O., and Audrey Hepern among others. What I admire most is the sense of elegance in a woman who expresses her personality with her individual timeless style.
ANNEX : BOY
You’ve been honored with numerous prestigious awards and accomplished in a short time what other designers could only hope to accomplish in a life time yet you say you have not created your best piece yet, when can we expect your “best” piece? I am a creator that is in constant search in achieving excellency and continue to surpass my own limits. I cannot say “when” that “best” piece will be created because where would I go from there?
What’s more exciting seeing your design on a high-profile client or seeing it out on a complete stranger?
In between law, photography, and now designing do you think you’ll wake up one day and decide you want to do something totally different? The path I took to get here is what helped me get to my calling. I cannot imagine doing anything else with my life because through designing I have fulfilled my love of artistic expression. What insider advice can you give to aspiring designers? Uniqueness is the key and be loyal to your desire of expression. Never copy anyone else!
It doesn’t matter if my piece is on the most famous of celebrities or a stranger on the street. What is most exciting to me is who wears it with as much passion as I felt when I created it for them.

As a street-style icon and fashion demi-celebrity who has the distinction of being a central inspiration for two of this era’s most powerful visual tastemakers. Monroque, 32, is a Caribbean beauty who is blessed with dashing looks, a brilliantminded personality, a fierce confidence. She is a New York based magazine editor, art consultant and muse art consultant. Raised near the beach in St. Lucia and never left the island until she graduated high school “The moment I knew I wanted to live here (New York) is when I got to go to a Jean Paul Gaultier party,” Monroque shared in an interview with New York Mag. She’s the girlfriend of art-world mogul Larry Gagosian, the foremost gallerist on the planet, and has also caught the eye of none other than Miuccia Prada for whom she functions as a kind of muse and an unofficial ambassador for Miu Miu. America has certainly treated her well.

Shala Monroque
Michelle Lamy is a rough diamond. For over 15 years she and her husband, designer Rick Owens have brought fashion and raised eyebrows to the world together. Lamy is a form of creativity in herself. Upon meeting Rick Owens, she helped bring a second lung to his body of work as his muse. French by decent Lamy sports gold plated teeth, tattooed fingers, and an askew drawn line down her forehead to compliment her accent. Together with Owens they have made a mark on fashion with fur designs and marvelous use of draping and gothic themes. When captured on the street, Lamy is usually in one of her hubby’s designs, but she is also an avid fan of Gareth Pugh. She took him under her wing and became his backer in 2006. Making her another name attached to Pugh’s 2009 bunny suit. Not too shabby for a girl who dropped out of law school.

from Ashley: Everyone has heard that blondes have more fun. Perhaps the idea behind the blonde adage is one of freedom, spontaneity and excitement. If that’s the case, i must have been blonde for years. My very nature is impulsive, ambitious and daring. Be it over the top fashion, opinionated commentary or unique choices in my own profession, I live my life like it could end tomorrow. Because it could, and I would never want to look back feeling like I stood in the way of my happiness and myself. Worrying about others’ opinions, whether our dreams are realistic or listening to the doubt in our own minds is a terribly sad waste of time. It restrains us from serendipitous connections, being our true selves and experiencing the very journey of life itself, one moment at a time. Everyday in the future is the past waiting to happen. So why would we hesitate in the present? That’s the only thing we really have. And to waste this because of fear, doubt or external opinion, is to waste life. When I went blonde, I wanted to have fun. And no matter the color of my hair, the outfit I wear, or the make up I apply, I know that I am still Ashley. And this blonde will be as creative, daring and giving as she can be, in each moment and have fun doing it.

One of the things I admire about her is her analytical mindset, however, it seems to get in the way of her just living life- moment to moment. ANNEX: On the show Jenna deals with her misfortunes very well, do you think you would handle some of her situations in the same way? AR: I don’t know if I would have the same positive composure! If some of the things that are thrown at her were thrown at me, it’s likely that I would respond sarcastically and then launch a twitter campaign against the perpetrator. #140CharacterWar. ANNEX: Does Jenna echo any part of you, or where you ever bullied in High school? AR: I was bullied as a kid, sadly most kids were I think. It took a huge toll on my self esteem and frankly- the scars of past cruelty still linger. But I try to keep in mind that I was dealt those instances for a reason. Each one, each cruel remark or action, made me who I am and better because of it.

ANNEX: At the shoot you were very comfortable in your own skin, and really owned the moment. Do you prefer to be the femme fatal like in the shoot or the underdog like Jenna? AR: I prefer being myself. And I was just being myself at the shoot. One of the wonderful things about what I do for a living is that I can be a complete different person, role to role. And as long as I never lose sight of myself and what makes me, Ashley, happy- well then I’ll be just fine. ANNEX: What do you say to all the kids out there who don’t handle it as well as Jenna? AR: I’d say to stay strong. Because we are all warriors of the day to day war. And as long as we fight for our happiness, love and dreams- we can become not only survivors, but victors of the life past and the life ahead. ANNEX: What’s the next step in the evolution of Ashley Rickards? AR: I honestly don’t know just yet. Most likely some tattoos. I have some quotes in mind that have really shaped me and helped me be the best I can be, and I would love to have those in permanent reminders of sorts. ANNEX: Are there any roles you’re pinning for at the moment, or about to start filming? I’m sure your fans would love to know what they can catch you in next. Probably one of the most buzzed about shows; before, during, and after New York Fashion Week. Alexander Wang proved that he could live up to the hype this season, combining a much more subdued color pallet than last spring. Wang’s runway had a “Tron like” feel as he kept his best and on his toes. The collection was innovative and progressive as he kept true to a formula of true American sportswear. In Wang’s perspective, fabric silhouettes with a floating panel detail was not enough to top off the cascade of white garments with a show stopping glow in the dark neon yellow.

balmain balmain Stamping his name at the top season after season, Oliver Rousteing continues to show the industry why he was just the right man for the job. Taking major inspiration from Versace’s nineties heyday with the likes of Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford, adding a little touch to hot and heavy Havana nights. Rousteing’s intricate dresses are made of a basket-woven raffia whilst his men’s tailored suits have an almost zoot suit like feel along with shoulder pads that would drive Grace Jones wild. The collection had almost a hint of couture that was greatly appreciated, not to say that the more simple leather skirt and all denim looks were a disappointment, as they did an exceptional job of making the collection appear fluid and cohesive.

This makes it possible to fully compare her simplest looks to finally becoming a huge fashion statement, it would be a shock, noot see this collection in every fashionista’s closet; in fact, it would be a crime. At only 22 the new kid on the block in Paris is making his voice clear and precise with a very cube-like silhouette. Lourenco’s military vibe echoes his resort collection that seemed to mimic throughout multiple runways this season. The fabrication and print block is the real winner, his color pallet is to die for and effortless layering that would make even Anna Dello Russo green with envy. Proclaiming to be a true star this season, Lourenco presented a true star this season. Dressing women of all ages Lourenco has officially etched his way into our hearts and we don’t think there’s any going back from this one. To the eye, angles and tasteful sex appeal in his slip dresses contrast with a masculine overall silhouette balanced by the very feminine almost baby bakery colorways. Lourenco has rightfully stumbled upon the top spot this season, we hope this newbie can continue on this trajectory that could very well have him sitting atop of a major brand such as Céline or even Vuitton.

While a sprinkle or two reverent of CĂŠline was no harm no foul, the presentation was bright. In aspect from the color selection and from the future in which we see, Tait making some major moves in an industry show he was born and bred for fashion.

q&a:
ANNEX: ‘Let’s have a KaiKai’, now Annex being the ‘Drag Race’ lovers that we are know exactly what that means, but can you explain what ‘lets have a kaikai’ means for those readers who may not know? Well to start, it’s takeoff of the secret GLBT term of “kiki” which is a fun time amongst likeminded individuals, usually an afterhours one at that. Now a “kaikai” is when two drag queens have a fun time with each other and without their respective outfits. ANNEX: You love controversy don’t you, always one to rile feathers and make people squirm in their seat ? Do you strive to push buttons? I think pushing the envelope and taking risks leads to bigger payoffs. I do try to do things that haven’t already been done. It’s one of the reasons I abhor lip-syncing. Why parrot someone else’s act? ANNEX: How do you feel about the runaway hit ‘Chow Down (at Chic Fil a)’ going viral, were you expecting it?
“My upcoming album will be a dream come For those who are fans of the LOGO reality television drag queen competition series Rupaul’s Drag are already familiar with season 4’s bad girl Willam Belli, who has gone down as one of Drag Race’s most controversial contestants since the shows 2009 debut. Willam the only contestant in Drag Rag history to ever be disqualified is still causing trouble since his much talked about dismissal, literally with a cut from his upcoming album and first single “Trouble” one of many club worthy songs by the performer. Willam’s also causing a stir on the political front practically birthing the anti-chic-fil-a movement against the conservative Christian ran fast food franchise. Willam never one to shy away from causing a stir is quickly rising as one of the most successful contestants post “Drag Race” fame. And we sat down to shat with the hilarious queen about what’s happened, what’s happening and what’s going to happen with Rupaul’s problem child.
true for me and a perfect coaster or ashtray for anyone with moderate to average taste point. It has some songs no one knows about yet and I’m very excited to unleash them.”
I look at this song & video as the major kick-off to the ant0 Chick-filA movement. We may have been accidental activists but we were the loudest, if not the first, of voices to decry their hate meat as something that needed to be addressed. ANNEX: What can we expect for the album? Will it all be of a comedic nature? It’s not all comedic. There’s some original songs slated for it that are downright fierce (and I HATE that overused term but that’s the only word I got). ANNEX: Everyone wants to know why you aren’t on the All-Star season of ‘Drag Race’, What happened we all had you pegged for the top 2 if not taking home the crown last season? Well I told everyone I had a really important pedicure that I couldn’t reschedule but it’s not true. I don’t know why I’m not on All-Stars. I don’t work in casting. People who were eliminated FIRST on their seasons are on there and I’m not. I don’t have much to say on the topic right now but everyone can bet their asses that I’m going to be delivering it to world during my live recaps for Logo’s New Now Next site with John Polly of the Jon & John team. ANNEX: Do you regret your dismissal, or is it just Willam’s way of making his mark? like “I got kicked off and I’m still better than all you bitches? I don’t regret it at all. My exit allowed me to do an off-Broadway musical in NYC that won top awards at the Fringe Fest last year. I was doing that 3 days after I left. Timing is almost uncanny...like I planned it or something. I think there is a new breed of reality show contestant- a self-aware one- that thinks (or actually can) get one over on production without being a total hazard to their own reputation, health or safety of others. I like to think I ushered that in to a degree without appearing like a sociopath. ANNEX: As a fashion magazine we have to applaud you on some of your ensembles, especially your shoe game. Are you a label whore or do you just enjoy a good quality shoe, and who’s your favorite shoe designer. Quality is key because we are talking about holding up a hundred something pounds of man. I like Giuseppe Zanotti, Versace and Christian Louboutin. Dida Ritz kinda christened me with my long hair/red bottoms persona. ANNEX: Finally, if you could describe yourself in one word what would it be? AWFUM (awful/awesome)

the comebacks
Ciara/One Woman Army: The fifth studio album from the Atlanta bread songstress is another on the comeback list. After her fair share of commercially disappointing albums Ms. Harris is back with a vengeance- trying to build her moniker in order to book those stages some said she could not. With first single sorry premiering not to long ago with a stunning video, here is to hoping that her Epic Records team including the full support of X-factor judge and Epic Records executive L.A. Reid. “Army” in its entirety is set for release on December 4th.
92
Xtina/Lotus: Another comeback in the world of music, Christina Aguilera or know better as Xtina hits the 4th quarter with her latest effort Lotus. Being ever much the phoenix, Xtina is back with a vengeance after taking a lashing in the media back in 2010 during the heavy promo for her Bionic LP. But as the old adage goes “dust yourself off and try again”, with her positively received stint on NBC’s the Voice Xtina kicks off the Lotus era with new single ‘Your Body”. The track, which as of now reigns at number 4 on the itunes chart, is poised to top the Billboard 100 in a matter of weeks with a number 1 album to follow.
Brandy/TwoEleven: The biggest R&B comeback of the past few years, 90’s teen queen Brandy brings her sultry multi octave range back to the top of the charts. Lead by the sizzling top 10 first single ‘Put it down’ assisted by Chris Brown and 90’s throwback 2nd single ‘Wildest Dreams’, Brandy has once again reclaimed her dominance over the R&B divas who she inspired and influenced. With Two Eleven notching in at number 3 on the Billboard 200 , it checks in as Norwood’s latest top 10 entry along her storied nearly 20 year long career. While after the commercial disappointment of her last effort Human Brandy had a lot to prove, and the talent to do so. Along with the support of mega producers, writers and collaborators such as Rico Love, Frank Ocean, Mario Winans and up and comer Tiyon “TC” Mack Brandy has crafted yet another masterful work of art.

the rookies
Cher Lloyd/Sticks + Stones: Another UK transplant from the widely successful X Factor singing competition Lloyd. Off of her US top 20 “Want you back” Cherl is looking to make some major waves from across the pond.
Rita Ora/Ora: Jay Z’s new Roc Nation darling Rita Ora sets her UK chart topping album “Ora” up to take on the US. After scoring 3 consecutive number 1 singles across the pond “Ora” is set to debut within the coming months, and if our British counterparts are anything to go by we are in for a world of wonder. I mean they gave us Adele, right?
Kendrick Lamar/good kid, m.A.A.d. city: West Coast music’s rise to prominence again is led by Los Angeles’s own, Kendrick Lamar. An album that tells many stories from different people’s perspectives, yet all coincide with a single vision and overall plot that Kendrick intended. This is the rap album that everyone is talking about right now because it’s more than just random songs put together, it’s a cohesive story. For everyone who loves a good story, they love this album.
the mvp's
Taylor Swift/Red: Country music’s golden child, Taylor Swift, tops the charts easily selling around 1,000,000 copies her first week with her new album “Red.” Her audience has grown with her throughout her career and her new experiences and loves are all included in this new album. Anthems that include never getting back together with an ex help empower some people to have independence as well as her go-to love songs help give us everything we can expect from a Taylor Swift album.
ANNEX : BOY
Rihanna/Unapologetic: Looking to topple the charts once again with her ever-expanding list of number ones, and even more expanding hairstyles Vogues November cover girl Rihanna sets up her 7th studio album to hopefully be her first number 1 album.
Miguel/Kaleidoscope Dream: Making a statement with his second album, Miguel puts together a very smooth and soulful piece of art. He’s created hiss own image and now his voice is as distinct as he is. “Kaleidoscope Dream” is one of the best R&B albums this year, joining the likes of Frank Ocean’s acclaimed “Channel Orange.” It’s not focused towards pop or rap or even bedroom R&B, it creates an uplifting and sensual vibe that makes you want to drive down the road with the windows down and singing loudly!

I See...C o s t a R i c a Pura Vida, universally known in Costa Rica literally translates to pure life. It’s a very common phrase used to respond to “How things are going”, a victory chant, or even a greeting! PURA VIDA!! Experience Costa Rica by partying with the locals, having the grandest adventures, viewing the wonders of nature, enjoying tropical beaches, and create memories.
PARTYING WITH THE LOCALS: Club Virtigo in San Jose is one of the leading clubs in Central America that has hosted some of the best parties Costa Rica has seen. Although we literally waited in line for roughly two hours I got the richest view of the locals in between meeting people and of course people watching. THE GRANDEST ADVENTURE: The river Reventazón is located in the charming Orosi Valley in Cartago province. Adventure junkie hot spot for WHITE WATER RAFTING, it’s classified a level 3 which sounds scary but I’m a total white water rafting rookie and I had nothing but a good time!
VIEWING THE WONDERS OF NATURE: Aventuras La Carpintera, ZIPLINING THROUGH THE RAINFOREST in San Vicente of Tres Rios, Cartago. I kicked off the tour with a warm meal at Hacienda Chirraca restaurant where of course you have to have a casado (Costa Rica’s notorious dish for every meal). We we’re then all piled into the back of a pick up truck, an experience in itself winding up the gorgeous wet mountain up close. When we arrive to starting point we had a training at the Canopy School some minutes after we began the adventure of 1800 meters of cable divided in 13 cables from different distances, 20 platforms. Between these platforms we will find landing by rappel, hiking through a path of 300 meters. There isn’t a better way to view the wonders of nature other than zip lining through them where it’s nothing but you, a cable, and this beautiful rainforest. ENJOY THE TROPICAL BEACHES: I hoped on a bus and headed en route to Jaco, it’s one of the most popular Costa Rican beaches less than 2 hours from San Jose. Jaco has the reputation of being a ‘party beach’ with an excellent nightlife, while being a laidback, chill town. Of course I had to surf in Costa Rica! Rented a board for nearly nothing and got caught in a rain and thunderstorm, what an adventure. The downfall was definitely the pebble lined shore which I found wildly unpleasant so much so I got out of the water a lot sooner than I normally would have. I relaxed on the sand and got a henna tattoo as an alternative (not a bad alternative!)

die antwoord This South African band is setting the charts on fire, literally. They’ve been featured in both Rolling Stones: South Africa and American Interview magazine, with a style all their own that’s a mix between hip-hop and new rave. Die Antwoord is a true breath of fresh air in an overly pop dominated industry.
xbox nba baller beats Probably one of the most addicting games we’ve played in years. NBA baller beats is no joke, dribbling out to hits by Kanye and more, once you get the hang of it you’ll be on your way to the being the next LeBron or Kobe.
aaliyah Being one of our favorite crossover acts of the 90’s, before Beyoncé was – well, Beyoncé and R&B was popular. Aaliyah reigned and was only just getting started, leaving us at the mere age of 22 the teen dynamo was a 90’s it girl, and the thought of new music is all too exhilarating. Even the rumors of this project have us giddy with excitement; with new drama circulating daily between Drake and Aaliyah’s longtime collaborators TImbaland and Missy Elliot this project is definitely on the tongue every industry insider.

Comme De Fuck Down Beanie: 424 on Fairfax $36 What better way to tell the world how you feel then by having it sprawled across your forehead, without it being permanent. Yeah we know rude graphic are so 2004 high school, but these beanies have such an unequivocal cool that it’s acceptable.
Dating back to the 1920’s this cape silhouette is still a must have for the fall. Covering the back and exposing the front allows for ease and style to be effortlessly worked in.
Givenchy Nose Ring: Luisaviaro-
ma.com $330 - $595 I know it’s a Givenchy heavy list this issue but we just can’t help the utter undeniably of Ricardo Tisci’s genius. This septum ring, reimagined from the 97’ McQueen era of the Parisian house is so obnoxiously ballsy that we can’t help but fawn over it. And the fact that you don’t need an actual piercing to rock it (its magnetic) is perfection at its best.

veil beanie materials:
a slouchy knit beanie 9x 24 French veil netting embroidery thread of a similar color an embroidery needle a pair of scissors
step 1: Spread the netting out lengthwise. Place the beanie in the center of the netting, offset by about 3 inches. Fold the two ends towards the center.
step 2: Thread the embroidery thread through the needle and make a double knot at the end. Overlap the two sides of netting and sew them to the beanie with a single stitch. (I’m using white thread here so you can see the stitches).
step 3: Continue the stitch by folding down one side in half and sewing the edge to the beanie. Repeat the same step on the other side.
step 4: Now fold over both sides in half again, to the same center point. Sew the edges to the beanie with another stitch. Double knot the thread from the inside and trim.
step 5: Turn the beanie over, find the middle point, and sew the bottom edge of the netting to the beanie with a single stitch. Double knot and trim. Make a 1.5 inch fold. Put the beanie on and then peel the netting down over your face. Voila, you’ve been veiled!
