REAKFAST @Saint Laurent

-By Mi’chele Daniels

B orn in Algeria in 1936,

Yves Saint Laurent, who's designs gained notice at the ripe age of 18 while studying fashion design at Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in Paris. During his 56 years in the fashion industry Yves gained recognition as one of the most influential and iconic designers of all time on account of his fashion brand, known today as Saint Laurent. Working under the wing of Christian Dior as a young designer and succeeding him as head designer at Dior after three short years Yves went on to open up a fashion house of his own, known then as Yves Saint Laurent funded by a millionaire from the U.S. Saint BRITTANY BYRD Laurent, along with his then FASHION DIRECTOR partner Pierre Berge birthed a brand that quickly began to rule the world of fashion. Bringing a renewed innovation to fashion not seen since Diors new look, Saint Laurent became the first couturier French brand to present a full prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear) line, which debuted in the fall of 1966. Throughout the 1960's and 70's Saint Laurent went on to define the fashion of the decades with trends such as the popularization of the beatnik look in fashion and one of the most acclaimed, tailored tuxedo suits for women, the Le Smoking, The perfect balance of androgyny redefined the rules of women’s garb. Along with the creation of trends the brand also gave room for history to repeat itself, in a sense, with modern touches, bringing into their collections influences from decades past such as the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's. 4

A lthough backlash and criticism

regarding Yves lifestyle and health brought negative press to the brand YSL thrived throughout the 1980's and 1990's gaining copious amounts of recognition with not only the fashion elite but also the mainstream public. With help from various muses, for ad campaigns and or inspiration, such as London socialite Diane Vandelli in the 1980's and French supermodel Laetitia Castain in the 1990's, who likened her time working with the brand to a love story. During the grunge era of the 1990’s, which took fashion by storm, Saint Laurent played a principle role in the inspiration for many contrasting designers at the time.

K nown today as simply Saint Laurent the fashion brand has still remained at the top of the ranks as far as relevance in the world of fashion. Known as one of the most influential brands, with it came to the juxtapositions of coloring, even with brands such as Prada and Marc Jacobs have credited Saint Laurent in influencing their own collections today.

L iving in a day and age when media and fashion have never worked so closely Saint Laurent sightings are abundant. Whether it's your favorite celebrity donning Saint Laurent on the red carpet at an award show, pieces from the brand featured in a spread while you flip through a magazine in line at the market or simply the lady behind you in the lines classic Muse bag it is safe to say Saint Laurent in itself is beyond iconic and continues to be legendary. Led now by new creative director Hedi Slimane, who worked for the brand for two years in the late 1990's as collections and art director, Saint Laurent although undergoing reinvention will forever remain iconic. ROYAL BINION: Sometimes working with a photographer can be a little nerve wrecking, especially when you plan on having them on a rooftop in 90 degree weather for 6 hours. However Royal’s demeanor never swayed, a breeze to work with, and not to mention we got some killer shots for our Blue Monday editorial.

RICKY BENNICK: A new kid on the block at only 25 years young, Bennick with his swift and youthful energy was a breathe of fresh air on set of Bang! ByJohnny Wujek. While Bennick is rather new to styling he has a rather fine-tuned and comprehensive eye that will take him far within the industry.

STEFANO CHURCHILL: Standing at a brooding 6’1 Stefano’s lightheartedness and playful spirit is truly refreshing. However exuberant he may be when it was time to become the ever so serious Mr. Johnny Depp, Stefano posed with pin perfection. Having a face that seemed to emote almost effortlessly his scenes within our Smells Like Teen Spirit editorial where a definite standout, amongst an already stellar cast. ANNEX MAN: BROOKLYN 13’

BRIAN ZIFF: A young photographer with a true passion for music it turns out, who just so happened to take some of the most stunning images I’ve helped produce. Ziff’s use of lighting is definitely one to be envied, along with his ease and laid back attitude made shooting our 54 editorial at the gorgeous Supperclub in Hollywood a magical experience, and I think the images created really capture the experience had.

Being a style maverick is about more than shifting and shaping your own style, it’s about shifting the cortex of society and being a true maverick. Johnny Wujek is one of the most successful and powerful stylist in the industry, with clients like Carly Rae Jepsen, Kate Mara, and of course America’s Teenage Dream pop phenom Katy Perry. Wujek along with Perry has burned some of the most iconic imagery of the last decade into our brains – I mean the whipped cream bra, c’mon. Now joining Tyra Banks’s America’s Next Top Model with Kelly Cutrone and Rob Evans Johnny is leaving no fashion stone unturned, and we can’t blame him. When you’re hot, you’re hot, and he’s hot.

AM. What would someone find you doing when you are not working? JW. Working. JK. I would be with friends. I have a pool at home so I have people over to swim. Flea markets. Movies. Hiking. Stuff like that. AM: When did you start designing costumes and styling, and when did it become your sole source of income? JW. I started about 8 years ago, and probably within a few months things really took off. I pushed everything else aside and focused just on styling and costume designing. I was pretty lucky. AM. How would you describe your signature look? JW. Pushing the fashion boundaries with a sexy bit of humor. AM. Can you describe your “I made it” moment? JW. I’m still making it. Haven’t MADE it yet. Making it every day more and more, but a major moment was a couple Halloweens ago, when I would be out seeing lots of Katy’s costumes I had designed. That was pretty fun. AM. What or who are your biggest inspirations? JW. I take inspiration from all over: old movies, the future, and technology. googling the most random things. Traveling. It really just comes from all over. AM. Looking back I’m sure there are some looks that you wish you would have never completed, can you tell us one? JW. Nope. I loved them all. They all had their moments. I wouldn’t say any were tragic. I know better then that. AM. What motivates you to continuously produce such amazing costumes? JW. I always want to top myself. Yet I always end up in jeans and a t-shirt. AM.The fashion styling and design industry can be a tough place, but you’ve managed to have a pretty long and successful career, how do you see your career evolving in the near future? JW. Building my brand: designing, photography, directing, and creative directing. I will NEVER just do one thing. AM. Does Johnny Wujek have a mantra? JW. I can and I will. AM. Because a man without a superior fitting leather jacket is a man with no brain. John Lindberg’s collection may not have been the loudest of the fall showings but what it was is a testament to the classic rebel. With great tailored overcoats and finely tuned basics Lindberg’s collection seamlessly integrates with any mans wardrobe; from the fashion inept to even the fashion expert. The entire collection is one to attain, if not only for the timelessness of his leather outerwear.

Geller one of the most referential of the young designer clan, is also one of the most skilled in presenting such a periodesq collection while still feeling fresh, new, and oh so enticing. With a bevy of beautifully worked pieces from a pre Nazi era of berlin the collection felt now and sophisticated with a hidden Americano charm.

No one has their pulse on the shift in menswear for the modern man like Auston Bjorkman. Mixing other worldly fabrications such as baby alpaca and Sea Island cotton into dangerous silhouette melding of tailored and athletic standards Sir New York is on everyone’s tongue and should be in every mans closet from chic bomber jackets to killer printed tee’s no one screams “I am the revolution” like Sir New York.

Taking us on wild exploration of far away fields and plains the Topman Designs team gave us as usual some extremely wearable pieces with great high fashion taste. Showing a multitude of great parka’s, cropped peacoats, and a staple cotton drill pant in a bevy of colors, to deprive your wardrobe of such a collection would be all to saddening especially given the lower range price point.

Normally such a “Fashion” collection would never make a must have full collection list, however Coppens use of wearable fabrics while creating a young yet sophisticated silhouettes makes for a truly enticing showing. Giving you prints and solids that can easily be transitioned from work to play the collection felt modern yet referential, and with this being only Coppens fourth menswear collection definitely makes him one to watch.

Fresh off of their CFDA win Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow have presented one of falls best and with only 10 looks. But what 10 looks they were, making for a fully cohesive and interchangle wardrobe. Able to take looks effortlessly from home, to work, to party, the Public School team is on to something no man can deny.

With his signature big sportswear the native Angelino is leaps and bonds above his completion with a clear voice, which is distinctly clear in his very first solo showing. With a clear Californian reference Samson takes the modern man through his ever so casual life, ever so chicly. The easiest way to look like you don’t care when you do Samson is a go too.

Giving us the modern man at its best, McQ’s fall collection provided wardrobe must have after must have from full print looks to the perfect grey suit and even an everywhere bomber jacket which seems to be a super trend for fall. Burton’s McQ guy is young, experimental, however referential in slight never dropping the pulse of the fashion society.

As our most gentlemanly selection this season, and with good reason Snyder finally finds his wings. This style faux pas is slowly slipping out of it’s “under no circumstances” status. Within reason though, the exceptions always being Birkenstocks-for now, but Tevas, and flip-flops always. Designers like Prada, Marc Jacobs, Celine, Givenchy, and Dior all seem to be agreeing with us as they sent models stomping down the runway with covered piggly-wigglies and the occasional Sandal. Favored by many a fashionista from the United States to the ultra chic Parisians, the socks and sandys trend has been seen within the pages of international fashion magazines the world over and even in our very own Issue: Allan.

Yep, it’s that time. The final season of AMC’s breakout hit Breaking Bad has commenced with it’s final season. The last 5 years with the meth cooking chemistry teacher Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and the lovable local drug dealer Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) has been nothing short of a wild ride. Now after staking up numerous awards the series is coming to a close. Promoted to be the most drama filled installment yet with White’s DEA brother in law finally knowing the truth, the last 8 episodes are sure to keep us on the edge of our seats.

Standing at 6’1 with a boyish yet masculine pout and alluring squint the 27-year-old model repped in NY by click models is true powerhouse. Having worked with photographers such as Tony Duran and Rick Day and walked runways for everyone from Frankie Morello to DKNY since first appearing on the modeling scene back in 2007, now a veteran Fawcett still brings his legendary smize and rippling abs to runways and campaigns season after season.

BREAKING BAD BREAKS HEARTS

RIHANNA'S A GANGSTA 4 LIFE

The queen of the resurgence of the ratchet movement has finally given us a direct lifeline to her killer style once again making her one of the most adored fashion icons of the last decade. Her new collection for fast fashion retailer River Island is inspired by her athletic street chic style. The collection is predominately black, white, and camouflage, with loud prints, outline bareing midriffs all adorned with her nickname “RiRi” and “G4Life” (Gangsta For Life) - uh duh! it’s riri. “I want a sexy girl with super short hair and a dynamite self righteous personality”… said no man ever. And yet celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Ciara, Rita Ora, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Beyoncé and women alike seem more and more inclined to chop off their luscious locks in favor of a short doo. Why? Because, women are shedding the traditional shackles that are placed upon a socially perceived view of sex appeal. With that comes liberation, freedom, and a complete sense of self. A sex appeal too elusive to be contained into a 30 second Garnier Fructis advertisement. Not letting the locks define you seems to be a fall mantra, and if you’ve got the bone structure then why not take the pledge.

No, Ibiza is not some made up word thrown into party anthems as appropriate syllabic filler. It’s an actual island off the coast of Spain where people (excuse me, sheikhs) will pay €10,000 for a VIP booth at Pacha, the best nightclub in the world, and pour Veen (really expensive water) into spray bottles to wipe the table. The place is loaded with celebrities and the most beautiful Eastern European women you’ve ever seen. Is there really a place like that? Yes, heaven does exist for 5% of Earth’s population. Ibiza has long been touted as the party motherland for the rich and successful playboys of the world, and they’ve sold that dream to everyone… which is why we’re obsessed.

Mixing hues, rather than simply textures can make for a single color scale outfit that is just as visually appealing, if not more. A complete monochromatic look can be minimal with a clean and strong edge, as seen on these street style stars you can add layers, and accessories to be the perfect monochromatic man.

Any outfit can be taken to the next level by adding a motorcycle jacket. The biker jacket is definitely a wardrobe staple for men. A cool leather biker jacket advocates for the rough aesthetic and injects any outfit with the right amount of edginess. 49

To make a little side cash in college, Crawford was a corn-shucker at the local fair in Illinois. E) Boy George: As any struggling artist you try to do as much as you can to make money to help push your career farther. George took on many odd jobs, picking fruit, a stint as a milliner and even a make-up artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company. F) Cyndi Lauper: After receiving a high school equivalency degree, Lauper needed to work a multitude of jobs just to support her band, The Blue Angels. She worked as an office assistant, waitressed for a few years and even sang in a Japanese restaurant from time to time. G) Tupac Shakur: Not necessarily an odd job, but one you definitely wouldn’t expect. Before he was discovered as a rapper, Tupac was backup dancing for a group called Digital Underground. During my internship I would oversee execution in sewing department, applied organization skills in line sheets to overcome and resolve obstacles, and collaborate and communicate with the design department regarding product development. Ever feel like some of your favorite artist, designers, stylist, or musicians remind you of another note worthy person – we do. We’ve collected a list of some of the hottest kids around well on their way to joining the icon class and dissected their aesthetic in relation to some of the greatest to ever do it.

Tina Turner + Michael Jackson = Beyonce If you want to turn a party out, leave it up to Tina Turner and MJ to do it for you. Both are an energetic duo that can captivate an audience not only with their music but costume, stage set and larger than life personalities. Well no wonder where Beyoncé got it. Today, one of Pop’s most iconic women of the 21st Century, Beyoncé does it all. Not only does she include the stage presence, respect, and costume of MJ, but she gives some of the best energy, hair, diva, and vocals of a young Tina Turner herself. A party isn’t right without at least one of the three on a playlist.

N

Nicholas Ghesquiere (Balenciaga) + Andre Courreges = Kate and Laura Mulleavy (Rodarte) A blend of geometrics and polished basics brings these two brands together to develop the concept for Rodarte. Ghesquière has always been an innovator for interesting angels, futuristic silhouettes, and a color pallet that rivals between colorful and neutral tones. Courreges was known for their abstract use of basic silhouettes, but adding asymmetrical details. Now when you put these two aesthetics together you get a modern day Rodarte. Collaboration between two the sisters is what makes this unique and elegant brand of today. With a play of vintage concepts these girls get the fashion industries attention every year.

From an affair with President John F. Kennedy to drug use, Marilyn soon became looked upon as a tragic Hollywood starlet.Towards the end of her life and career, Monroe's obsession with Kennedy and emotional instability lead to a substantial dependence on both prescription drugs and alcohol. Throughout her short existence, a painful childhood and three failed marriages with varying trials proved to be more then the starlet could bare, all leading up to her premature death in 1962 at the young age of 32. Through all her struggles Whitney Houston however Monroe remained and still is one of the most iconic women and desired sex symbols of all time.

Known best for her role as Dorothy in 1939's The Wizard of Oz, Judy Garland, with her curly brown hair and refreshing smile could easily have been America’s sweet heart. Although her career thrived for much of her life, personal demons brought much turmoil to the young starlet. Showing up late on sets cost Garland her working reputation, along with drug use and an attempted suicide in which she sliced her neck. Drug and alcohol addiction played a big role in Garland’s life, finally leading to her death at the age of 47 overdosing on barbiturates.

Michael Jackson Known around the world as the King of Pop, Michael Jackson had many trials during his reign. Most notably, the lightening of his complexion through his adult life brought about many rumors and much controversy said to be a proactive action against a diagnosis of the rare skin disease Vitiligo. One of the more serious tribulations that Jackson endured during his career however was being accused of sexual abuse of a child in 1993 by a 13 year old boy. Followed an arrest, trial and ultimate acquittal in 2003 in which he was charged with seven counts of child molestation and two counts of administering an intoxication agent to a minor. Throughout all the bad press however, Jackson maintained the throne. Battling with drug use for many years behind closed doors Jackson died an untimely death in 2009 at the age of 50 after receiving a deadly dose of sedatives.

John Galliano As the previous head designer for Givenchy and Dior, John Galliano is without a doubt an icon and prominent figure in the fashion world. Along with recognition for his distinctive, noteworthy designs Galliano has faced much controversy during his career as a designer. Following an arrest in a Paris bar after making anti-Semitic comments, stating he loved Hitler in 2011, the designer was dismissed from Dior after working with the fashion house for over fifteen years. Although stating he "didn't mean" the remarks, the designer was found guilty of "giving public insults on account of race" and was ordered to pay a fine of $8,400 dollars. Even though this state of affairs has haunted to designers career for more than two years, just this year Galliano was asked to work alongside Oscar de la Renta preceding De La Renta Fall 2013 collection debut, hinting at a return to fashion.

After a copious amount of success gained throughout the 1980's and 1990's, songstress Whitney Houston was found dead last February after accidentally drowning in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills hotel room. The fact that cocaine was listed as one of the contributing factors to Houston's death came as no surprise. Midway through her career, upon meeting and marrying former frontman of R&B group New Edition, Bobby Brown, Houston's public image took a turn for the worse. Thanks to the fluctuation of her weight and questionable public behavior throughout the years, Whitney's demons were far too relevant with drugs, ultimately taking her young life. Houston's music and legacy continue to live on.

Alexander McQueen Critically acclaimed, openly gay European designer Alexander McQueen took the fashion world by storm with his inventive, fashion-forward creations for both sexes. The world stood still for a moment on February 11th of 2010 when it was announced that McQueen had taken his own life. With no notable controversies during his career and appearance in the public eye other than two apparent drug overdoses in 2009; It is believed that the designers biggest tribulation was faced shortly before his death, nine days to be exact, when his mother died of cancer. According to longtime friend and photographer David La Chapelle at the time of his death McQueen was unhappy and dabbling in drug use. Although it has been three years since McQueen's untimely passing his namesake brand thrives as the fashion world still mourns the loss of one of the greatest designers of this generation. Naomi Campbell

ANNEX MAN: BROOKLYN 13’

One of the worlds' top supermodels, Naomi Campbell is no stranger to attention and the public eye. The coco bombshell has been making headlines for years, both for her modeling and also for her hardships. Following her admittance into rehab in 1999 for what she described as a five-year addiction to cocaine seemed as though Campbell's setbacks were a thing of the past but they were only at their dawn. Campbell's biggest battle would be with violence; charged with assault countless times, two of the accusing victims being police officers, Naomi's temper is without a doubt something to be reckoned with. Since then however, Campbell has kept a low profile, seen these days, yachting in the south of France being the iconic supermodel that she is.

AM: The Black Era, can you tell us more about this, and how it involves new music from you? DR: It’s the second installment to the trilogy. And it’s the fall. The moment you find out what you’ve lost and the choices you make to get back up again. It’s raw music for the raw souls. AM: You’ve been releasing lots of new music lately from; “Meteors”, “Judith”, and “Valkyrie”. What’s it feel like to be putting so much or yourself out there again, and are you afraid of how your work will be received? DR: Not afraid to be who I am. And I’m not scared of risk. Either people will love it or they won’t. That’s art. I make music for people who want to go on a journey. It’s really simpler than people make it. AM: You’re such a dynamic performer, how long have you been blazing stages? DR: Been wearing heels since I crawled. Been dancing in since I walked. Lol AM: You were once signed to a major record label. Now making all your own decisions as an independent artist from your image to music selections. Do you prefer calling your own shots or having the financial support to bring your music to the masses? DR: I prefer both. Each situation has its benefits. I’m more of a “work with what you have” girl. Whatever I get I make it work for me. Each one was great to have. AM: You’ve been in the industry for some years what have you learned about yourself and this industry as an artist? DR: That the world is never satisfied. So don’t try to please the world. Please yourself and let the world follow you.

AM: Now that Danity Kane has officially reunited, what can we expect form the new and improved DK, this is something people have been waiting a very long time for and many are excited? DR: Expect slayage. We wouldn’t comeback if we didn’t want to give our fanbase exactly what they’ve been waiting for. AM: Can you shed any light on the reason D. Woods isn’t apart of the reunion, and will she be joining in the near future? DR:Wishing her the best and nothing but love. AM: Parting with such a large entity, as Diddy and Atlantic Records must have been a very hard decision, do you wish that situation were handled differently? DR: I look to the future. That already has come and went. I’ve moved on from even thinking of what was.

AM: Why do you think it’s important to never give up on your dreams? DR: Dreams are illustrations from the book your soul is writing about you. Your book deserves and ending.

You've worked in the entertainment business for over 30 years now. When you started out there were no social networking sites and now it's apart of our everyday life. How do you think social media has affected the entertainment industry? AM: I've been working for over 30 years?! (Yes, I am that old.) ML: Obviously social media has made a huge impact; it's given people a great platform to have complete creative liberty. It is also great for celebrities to interact directly with their audience. AM: Why do you think you've survived this industry for such a long time and are still going? ML: I have a strong work ethic; I try to be as diverse as possible. Great support system. I have been blessed and very lucky. AM: With your hectic schedule of hosting on" ExtraTV", "One on One" TV show , "On with Mario Lopez" radio show, and returning to X- Factor for the shows third season. How do you maintain such a youthful look and healthy lifestyle? ML: Thank you, first of all... I think I got lucky with genetics and my lifestyle isn't always so healthy but health and fitness is definitely a top priority in my life. AM: Can we expect a grand return back to acting anytime soon? ML:I've never retired, I've just been very busy with hosting, which I love. I'd like to continue to balance both in the future. AM: You have a very distinct sound and image, was this something you realized early on or did it take you some time to really figure out what direction you wanted to go? IL: I was forced to make the easy decision to leave Bentonville Arkansas and head west. I had been expelled from school for having cough syrup in my gym bag so at that point I was determined and fit to be tied! I was naive but ready to take on the new journey! “Bring it on!” is wahat I was thinking!

AM: Your music video “I Don’t Wanna Wake Up” is out. How did the concept of the video come about? Did you help direct the video? IL: Yes I have had creative input and direction in all the videos as well as my team. The concept came from wanting to create not only classic, comedic, fun, with a splash of horror videos but to make them all flow together to form a sort of trilogy. “I Don’t Wanna Wake Up” is the morning after “Money” its me dealing with the aftermath…the saga continues! AM: Being apart of the CherryTree Records/ Interscope/Universal roster is huge, with such artist as Robyn and Ellie Goulding do you find it hard to make yourself and your needs know? IL: Not at all. I’m extremely fortunate to have the head of my label Martin Kierszenbaum, fully on board and fighting for this just as hard as my team and I do. That’s what made it so easy to join the Cherrytree family. He makes this project his priority and is just as passionate as I am about the music. He is always willing to amplify whatever needs or ideas I may have in order to make the music be known. I can’t complain.

AM: You just recently released your new EP ‘Introducing the Dame’, what was the process like bringing the album to life and do you really feel it’s your introduction? IL: The sound that is now what I like to call “Swamp-Hop” is a mixture of my past and present. It really is a cocktail of the “goth and post punk” influences from

my teen years to early 20’s, my rockabilly southern roots, and my real life stories. It took 10 years of trial and error for me to stop listening to what other people thought I should be into really embracing The Dame that you hear today. I’ve been lucky to have met a team of people who really understand me to make that “punk rock motown” sound come to life. My style is just a combo of different idols and imagery I’ve always been fascinated by like comic books, noir films, every Disney female villain, eerie sceneries, Morticia Addams and Lucille Ball. It’s all just my expression of my obsessions. I do love the color black maybe a little too much… haha. AM: You’ve been all across the country touring, what’s the best and worst part about life on the road?

AM: Ivy you have a promising career ahead of you, What can we except from you next ? IL: Thank you I’m anxious to see what’s in store! Next is the filming then release of the “Hang Forever” music video followed by getting back into the studio finishing up a full length record. Let me just say it’s going to be one hell of a good time… By: Roshada Powell

IL: The best part of being on the road is getting to the venue and playing. Traveling isn’t my favorite but it’s easier to deal with when you have all your best friends in your band cracking jokes all day to pass the time. I love seeing people’s reaction when I’m performing. They are like “what the hell is going on. This is crazy” but definitely in a good way! I’m so happy that the response from new listeners has been so positive! I was born to perform! It’s like my drug. AM: “Hot Damn” received immediate buzz upon release including placing you on #1 on Billboard’s “Next Big Sound”, Has the success of your work impacted you and/or your artistry? If so, How? IL: To me success is when you can make music that you love making, enjoy playing, and live it everyday! I’ve certainly done all that! The recognition for all that is just the icing on the sweetest most delicious cake ever baked! It makes me want more and more and to create even more! BRING IT ON!! ANNEX MAN: BROOKLYN 13’

URBAN 90’s hip-hop

era influenced from African-American culture was denim over load! High Top haircuts, bold tribal prints, baggy jeans with a mix of athletic wear with jogging jackets, sweats, and trainers from Nike’s Jordan, Adidas, Reebok, and K. Swiss. Trends of its time were based around iconic rappers/hip hop artist during this era; Tupac, Missy Elliot, Notorious B.I.G, TLC, Run DMC, Aaliyah, KC and JoJo, SWV and movies like “South Central” and Poetic Justice. During this time fashion brands like Cross Colors, Timberland, Tommy Hilfiger, Guess, Phat Farm, and FUBU were among the most profitable labels. In the largest sense the urban 90’s was the first “ratchet movement” popularized of late by current artist like Rihanna, Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Drake, Kanye West, and A$AP Rocky and trending on runways and in streetstyle by brands like Joyrich, Givenchy, Dimepiece, and Brian Lichtenberg.

grunge “Grunge is

nothing more than the way we dress when we have no money” said to VOGUE in 1993 by designer John Galliano. Inspired by hardcore punk bands of the Seattle Washington area. The angst filled writhes of Kurt Cobain’s Nirvana and Eddie Vedder’s Pearl Jam fueled one of the most rebellious generations of all time – but then again what generation of youth wasn’t rebellious. In the 90’s a young grunge kid was easy to spot, usually cloaked in ripped flannels and tattered jeans, atop a vintage pair of Dr. Martens or All-Star Converse with their disheveled hair tucked in beanies and baseball caps. While initially reluctant to embrace the movement –see Marc Jacobs removal from Perry Ellis, the fashion industries heavy exploitation of grunge brought about some of it’s most iconic moments and designers such as Jacobs, Vivienne Westwood, Anna Sui, Christian Francis Roth, and Betsy Johnson.

Dancewear In some ways the 80’s had it right on the money when it came to dancewear, some of which even transitioned into everyday wear with the rise of the aerobic craze. Knee high slouchy socks, body suits, tights, headbands, hair scrunches, of the shoulder shirts, and bold neon prints/colors. Workout videos by Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda, Olivia Newton-Johns music video “physical”, dance-themed shows such as the wildly popular “Fame” and “Staying Alive” and the 1983 film “Flashdance” also helped to bring dancewear to the streets. Dancewear still finds its inklings in today’s fashion and trends, tights are still worn as pants and the off the shoulder sweater is a mainstay for the sexy casual look. ANNEX MAN: BROOKLYN 13’

hippie A youth movement In a rebellion against the strict and stringent upbringing of the 50’s, the 60’s was all about peace, love, and harmony. With its fundamental ethos of harmony with nature, communal living, artistic experimentation, and widespread drug use, the 60’s almost had the 20 beat in the art of having a carefree time. During the 60’s we saw the rise of the bell-bottom, hand made tie-dye shirts, intricate batik fabrics, and the paisley shirt. With Woodstock in full swing somewhat reminiscent of the popular Coachella festive of today, which a lot of the Bohemian chic style is derived from, except with a more try hard attitude where the hippies couldn’t careless the hippies were the opposite of the mods. The hippie movement like most youth movements was more about the attitude and freedom of expression than the fashion.

greaser

Originating from U.S. street gangs and eventually being adapted by the masses as an expression of rebellion, with the name greaser referring to their slicked back hair. They swore by their 501 Levi’s and leather jackets that were a cause for effortlessness, which made this ultra-macho, look all the more appealing. The American Greaser was the pitch perfect picture of masculinity and they knew it. The greasers go down in history as being one of the first to don the motorcycle style giving the American birth to the iconic leather motorcycle jacket and harness boots, and are to this day the modern day cowboys riding the asphalt wave without a care in the world but fighting for the man next to you.

mod

The time of simple asymmetries and radical color combinations all rooted from a small group of stylish young British men. The 60’s rocked some of fashion’s trendiest styles that are still alive within lots of the collections of today. The 60’s were the decade of the Mondrian dress, tailored silhouettes, women’s androgyny, Skinny Tie’s, short angled haircuts, stripes, circles, and of course the mini skirt. During the mod era there was an onslaught of beatniks with their beret’s and black turtlenecks, and Teddy Boy’s with their immaculate Dandy looks which was one of the first assurgences of the rise in a males interest’s in fashion and it being socially acceptable – making Dandy’s one of the first modern men.

Sparked seemingly by the garb of the homeless with old world Japanese infusions of volume and layers, the popularity of the deconstructors came to prominence due to an anti-fashion movement against the over glamorized look of brands like Gucci, Valentino, and Oscar De La Renta. A select few Japanese designers Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, and Junya Watanabe who was Kawakubo’s apprentice in the 80’s led the movement. The premises of deconstruction is that of making a garment looked of the unfinished of tattered nature. Deconstructed designs are scene with frayed or unfinished hems, rips, tears and holes, general asymmetry, mixing of patterns and fabrics, complete dissimilation of standard silhouettes, and on occasion even flame burns. Yamamoto who is known for his twisted forms of layering and Kawakubo who is known for her drape and ultimate deconstruction turned fashion on it’s head, and continue to prove to be some of the most innovative and forward thinking designers of the time, shifting and molding new silhouettes and creations season after season. The Curious Case of Chris Brown, a title befitting of the man, the myth, and the legend. Targeted by just about every media outlet on the planet whether for the good or the bad, 24 year-old Brown has most certainly had a most riveting past few years. However, like all true icons and icons in the making it’s truly about how you rebound that shows the world what you are made of. Now off of 2 consecutive number 1 album’s Chris is all set to rock the world again with his latest body of work titled “X” and a new movie “Battle of the Year”.

AM: You started this era off with a bang with “Fine China”, what was the writing process like on such a great track, and how does it feel to be back with a whole new album? CB: I worked with Diplo on this record. We worked together on “Look at Me Now” so it was energizing to be back in the creative space with him. I’m very proud of X. I went all around the board with this album by working with new producers and focusing on the music as opposed to a particular genre. AM: Your last projects were last year’s Fortune and 2011’s F.A.M.E. both which gave you your first Billboard 200 number 1’s, do you feel the pressure to replicate that success with X to snag your 3rd consecutive number 1 album? CB: I don’t feel the pressure to replicate that success but I do feel the responsibility of bringing exciting music to the table which I feel confident we did in X. Of course everyone hopes for accolades but that’s never been my driving force. Especially for this record, I didn’t focus on following a formula for success or thinking about what’s hot, I focused on the grass roots. Just making good music. AM: Speaking of X, why call it X and what can we expect from the full album? Over the years you have experimented more and more with your sound from project to project, are we in store for any surprises this go around? CB: It has a couple of different meetings for me. X refers to who I am as a 24 year old person trying to grow up. X is a release, a forbidden sign. X is being able to express myself without a filter and moving forward. X marks the spot. I want people to hear the album and then decided what X means to them. ANNEX MAN: BROOKLYN 13’

On this album I tried to stay away from the euro pop beats. This record pays homage to the sounds of Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Sam Cooke... There’s a classic essence of R + B with the new age music of now. More live instruments, less auto-tune. AM: You also just recently suffered a non-epileptic seizure, stated from your rep was caused by intense fatigue and emotional stress. Is it hard for you to hear some of the things the media prints about you, and do you feel the labels are unjust and unfounded? CB: I know that the media need to sell issues, get viewers, get hits and the more salacious the news is, the more eyes. If we lived in an ideal world, we wouldn’t enjoy seeing other people fail and falter and suffer, but unfortunately that’s not the case. People want to know who you are and about you but some of the media doesn’t always give the full story. I try to use my music as a tool for people to get to know me. AM: You recently took to twitter and hinted at the possibility of X being your final album due to treatment from mainstream media and the recording industry. Is there any truth to that or was it just an overwhelming moment of frustration? And I am sure your fans were not to happy to hear such a statement. CB: Everyone has moments of frustration. I tend to voice what I’m feeling, for the good or the bad. I’m passionate about everything I do. I think I wear my heart on my sleeve so it shows in everything, including Twitter. Music is always going to be a part of my life. AM: You’ve been focusing a lot of your time and resources on charity work, what level of joy do you find giving back to your community? And what are some of the causes you find nearest to your heart? CB: I know what it’s like to have nothing. I know what it’s like to have one pair of shoes for an entire year. That’s why I recently partnered with Reebok through my foundation Symphonic Love and 2nd Call to give shoes to kids who need them. We also recently held the Unity Games with the LAPD as part of Symphonic Love’s Unity Campaign. I have the means to do for others and I think that it’s our responsibility to take care of each other whenever we can.

AM: Over your almost decade long career you have been through extreme highs and lows, how do you think this has affected you as a maturing young adult? While you are one of the most famous men on the planet, you are also still growing towards finding yourself as a person and as a man. How does this journey reflect in your music and artistry as a musician who emotes and finds solace in their music? CB: Making X, I found myself on the path to finding out who I am. This album has a lot of substance, from the subject matter and the situations to how it deals with love. It’s really derived from personal experiences. I always like mixing reality with art. AM: Will we witness any of that journey to discovery within the tracks on X? CB: Absolutely. Every track is personal. I just wanted to go and write personal records about what I’d been going through. I would rather let people identify with who I am as a person through my music. AM: Your new video for “Love More” Featuring Nicki Minaj was actually directed by yourself, what was the experience like sitting at the helm? And was Nicki good at taking your direction? CB: I love being behind the camera, being creative with a different outlet. It’s also about having a hand in creating the entire package from the audio to the visual. To present the truth of the record. We really connected on the vibe of the video. Nicki’s dynamic and we had a great collaboration. AM: At what point did you stop looking for forgiveness in the world and finally find it within yourself, or is that still a something you are in search of as the days go on? CB: I think that life is an ongoing journey, from beginning to end. I think that the moment you think you have it all figured out, you’ve stopped living. I expect to have highs and lows, that’s life. I am open to every day and to every experience. I’m only 24. I have a long way to go and I embrace that journey. BY: ROSHADA POWELL

I MANAGE STARS

AM: You’re billed as “I Manage Stars” what do you think it really takes to craft a star?

IMS: Our Belief is that stars are not made stars are born. So What does an artist have to possess to attract the attention of I manage stars? An artist that desires to work with our company has to be a hard worker. We all know that in this business nothing comes easy and there’s always someone out there that wants your spot and that is willing to put in the work. Also any artist we choose to develop has to be talented, there are enough gimmicks in todays market.

IMS: To become the most sought after “Brand Builders” in the industry from songwriting & producing to developing & executive producing film & TV projects. We’ve been developing a children’s clothing line that we hope to debut in LA’s 2014 Fashion week. We look forward to expanding our company International with projects from 11 year old Canadian pop singer / songwriter “Nic Neufeld” & 14 year old Peurto Rican pop sensation “Miguelito” in whom is also the youngest Grammy Award winner in history.

AM: Managing an act is definitely a full time job, without question. What does it really take to manage a star? IMS: A Plan: The fact that we create the vision and we execute it. MARILYN MONROE FOR CHANEL NO. 5 PERFUME (1954) The suggestive posture, gentle touching and effortless smile brought this empowering scent to a mainstream level. Living up to its expensive imagery, Monroe had to bring a convincing heiress role to set. Selling not only the perfume; but her iconic “character”. When interviewed in 1954, she was asked what she wore to bed, and the movie star provocatively responded, “Just five drops of Chanel No.5”.

Iman for Yves Saint Laurent At the time having a MARKY MARK AND KATE MOSS FOR (1980) Black supermodel was CALVIN KLEIN (1991) unheard of, especially coming straight out of the 70’s. Iman in her earlier years was signed to YSL for their S/S 1980 collection ad campaign. The black and white photography by Claus Ohm shows how dramatic and elegant this was, but what really makes this campaign special is the revolution for Black models. Iman went on to adorn numerous YSL runway shows and campains after, becoming an official muse to the renowned designer.

CARMEN KASS AND LOUSIE PEDERSEN FOR GUCCI (2003)

This one has to go down in the books as one of the most unique and provocative campaigns of all time. Spearhead by then creative director Tom Ford who over the years made it clear that his main objective was to sell the demand behind the brand, and he wasn’t shy about it at all. In 2003, Ford tapped supermodel Carmen Kass and Lousie Pedersen to lead his spring/summer ’03 campaign, peaking interests ever where. In the ad spot by the legendary Mario Testino, Kass has the signature Gucci “G” monogram etched into her public hair while a brooding Pedersen gesters the removal of her under garments in preparation of fellatio.

VERSACE (1994)

BY: ANTHONY PONTI

Season after season there are thousands of advertising campaigns that are splattered on billboards in every major city, throughout the pages of your favorite magazines and on your favorite bookmarked websites. However in those onslaught of visuals there are few that truly stand the test of time parking themselves forever in fashion history, and here are 10 that have done just that; from Naomi Campbell and Prada to Nick Kamen and Levis to of course multiple appearances from Calvin Klien, the creative and marketing teams behind these campaigns truly have something to celebrate for their genius and innovation have paved the way for many of todays brightest stars from the great Carine Roitfeld, Tom Ford, and Mario Testino at Gucci to Yves Saint Laurent and Pour Homme here are the top 10 most iconic fashion marketing campaigns of alltime.

Anna Nicole Smith for Guess (1993) Naomi Campbell for Prada (1994) 1993, the year that brought much hype to the already successful company through the eyes of Anna Nicole Smith. In ’93 Smith signed a contract to replace supermodel Claudia Schiffer to become the new face of Guess Jeans. A face of sex and the body of sin turned Guess Jeans once again into a mega brand, giving Guess of today the inspiration to sign Anna Nicole’s daughter for Guess Kids 2012 campaigns.

108

A huge point of the 90’s was ruled by the supermodel and we can all thank Gianni Versace for lthat. Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Stephanie Seymour, Christy Turlington, Nadja Auermann and Bridget Hall; who empowered women to love and live in Gianni’s “trash glamour” couture.

Always one to skirt the line of controversy Calvin Klein as a brand has been producing iconic imagery for decades which is why this is their second appearance on our list. In 1991 a hyped up Marky Marc of the funky bunch and a then only 17 year old Kate Moss bared little to nothing for famed photographer Herb Ritts in one of the most Iconic advertising campaigns of all time- pretty sure it was the crotch grab, With Mark’s bulging… muscles and Kate’s waif like figure and seductive gaze, the two made their way to super stardom.

What makes this campaign so iconic? 1994 was the year that Prada hired the first black model for a full season campaign; hasn’t happened again until recently this year. At 24 years old Campbell stepped onto set to prove that she was just as beautiful as any other model, and she was right. A stunning set of basic attire shot in black and white by the world renowned photographer, Steven Meisel.

NICK KAMEN FOR LEVI’S (1985) In the 1960’s when disco was slowly transitioning into the hippies, companies needed to start looking for mind blowing new imagery, art and creativities, and YSL did just that. Yves Saint Laurent, YSL POUR HOMME PERFUME (1971) posing nude in front of friend and photographer, Jean Loup Sieff sparked the world. The advertisement brashly challenged the “ideal” taboos of male nudity in main stream advertisement. If it wasn’t for provacotive yet artistic approach of this campaign, we may not have the daring shots of younger designers like Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford who have both donned barely there images for their brands fragrances. ANNEX MAN: BROOKLYN 13’

“The Original shrink-to-fit jeans”, a piece of luxury fashion that everyone wanted in on. In 1985, Levis scored male model Nick Kamen to do all the talking, or lack thereof. The scene is of Kamen entering a “launderette” in a plain black crew neck and Levi 501’s. Stripping down to his boxers and tube socks to enjoy his newspaper while his clothes wash. The 501 Shrink-to-fit’s became the most in demand denim of the time and still to this day. BROOKE SHIELDS IN CALVIN KLEIN JEANS (1981) This advertisement is just as Iconic, as it is controversial. Back in 1980, Calvin Klein h i r e d 15-year-old Shields to be the face of Calvin Klein Jeans. Not only does she provocatively seduce the audience with slogans like, “Want to know what comes between me and my Calvin’s? Nothing”, as well as gesturing and caressing herself in CK brand jeans, but she’s aged to look older then her actual age.

They made us writhe in our seats, break the rewind button, and gave us oh so pleasant dreams. These 10 scenes have gone on to become some of the most iconic sex scenes in movie history. Whether it be for their off the Richter level of passion or for their ground breaking nature these daring fantasy driven moments will forever be ingrained in the psyche of pop culture.

Mickey Rourke + Kim Basinger Nine 1/2 Weeks (1986)

Naomi Watts + Laura Harring Mulholland Drive (2001)-

Jake Gyllenhaal + Heath Ledger Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Oliver Martinez + Diane Lane Unfaithful (2002)

The title of the film refers to the duration of a sexual relationship between Wall Street arbitrageur John Gray (Rourke) and SoHo art gallery employee divorcé Elizabeth McGraw (Basinger). Their sexual relationship escalates throughout the movie as they elevate the danger of their affair by partaking in sexual acts in the most public of places. As they playfully hop into an alley as the rain is pouring down, a pipe showers down water on them, and they start ripping each other’s clothes off hitting a climax of regards in their Nine-½ week sordid soiree. The scene is still a wet dream enducing scene for Basinger and for a now awkward Rouke his hottest to date - I mean getting “head“ in the rain, c’mon.

But before the fated voyage reaches is destination at the bottom of the ocean the 2 star crossed lovers leave one of the most iconic handprints in history. the 60’s Ennis (Ledger) and Jack (Gyllenhaal) 2 brooding cowboys one cold night, after they’ve both been drinking decide their friendship should move to a more physical level. After a slight scuffle over personal space, with both pushing back violently the scene comes to a climax when the too collide in the most suggestive of manners. The affair carries on for decades, ending in the very disturbing “gay bashing“ murder of Jack seemingly tied to his foregin trists in mexico where he’d regularly vist in Ennis’s absence. As one of the most prominent gay themed movies of all time the movie went on to win numerous awards for cast and director a straight Ang lee.

Bill Bob Thornton + Halle Berry Monsters Ball (2001)

By the climax of the tumultuous and sometimes awkward relationship Hank realizes that he’s develope d feelings for the woman. Leticia in the heat of a late night begs Hank to make her feel good enticing the demoned prison guard, the ravishing lustful scene is rife with sexuality and went on to make history with Berry winning the Academy Award for best actress, a first for any woman of. Berry joked on stage that all it took was for her to show her breast to finally be recognized by the largley white Academy of voters. ANNEX MAN: BROOKLYN 13’

Tom Cruise + Rebecca De Mornay Risky Business (1983)

You could debate, that “Mulholland Drive”, in a way, is almost entirely a sex scene - a guilt-ridden fantasy as failed actress Diane grieves the woman that she’s in love with, whom she’s hired a hit man to kill. However one stands as one of the most iconic sex scenes of all time, in which Watts nervousness and uncertainty -”Have you ever done this before?” and almost reluctance to believe her own luck, makes it not only sexy, yet increasingly romantic. And by the time they’ve finished there’s a pain riddled throughout the scene, knowing that Betty/Diane is remembering, better times with the woman she had just murdered.

Left alone, with the family house and Porsche at his disposal, in the wealthy northern Chicago suburbs, Joel (Cruise), through his scheming friends, finds himself entertaining lady of the night Lana. The two eventually fall madly for each other and the night consists mainly of them copulating, including the iconic steam worthy scene on the deserted Chicago ‘L’ train. Probably one of the most mainstream interpretations of public sex to date. Ther’s no doubt this scene has been reenacted all over the world and also helped catapult a very pretty but unknown Tom Cruise into the household name he is today.

The tale of a New York City relationship, while loving and solid, lacks romance and passion, causing wife Connie (Lane), to begin an affair with an exotic Paul (Martinez). There are many erotic sex scenes between Paul and Connie however one of the greatest is after Connie sees Paul with another women. She attacks him and they start to fight, the anger and frustration of the situation soon turns to a heated passion serging through lustful stares as the couple then begins to slowly make love standing against a wall with Connie’s head planted aginst the wall dripping in the rain from a New York city fall shower feeling Paul’s deep embrace.

The undisputable and uncomparable chemistry between New Orleans Detective Lieutenant Remy McSwain (Dennis Quaid) and A.D.A. Anne Osborne (Ellen Barkin) comes to a head in “The Big Easy” when with her shirt unbuttoned and half on Anne seemingly unknowingly bates Lieutenant McSwain. While in the depth of the exchange Anne stops the steamy love scene saying she can not continue because she is too nervous and can’t relax. Remy’s response is simple as he starts to guide his hand back up her leg and under her skirt, “Relax Darlin’. This is the big easy. Folks have a certain way of doing stuff around here.”

Everyone’s born with one special thing, and Eddie Adams (Wahlberg) uses his to take the world of pornography by storm during the industries golden age of the 1970’s. For the filming of his first scene an implied 17-year-old Eddie embarks on a sexual tirade with the much older Amber Waves (Moore) a veteran porn mistress, the scene goes on to spark a massive career for Eddie and a series of dubious events. However, Boogie Nights is less a film about pornography than the comic story of a group of misfits, losers, and lost souls who are embraced by Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds), a director who makes “adult films, ANNEX MAN: BROOKLYN 13’

Tom Stall (Mortensen) confesses to his wife Edie (Bello) that he’s really mobster-onthe-run Joey Cusack, and the pair get into a heated argument in the staircase of their home, an argument that turns violent, and suddenly sexual, as it appears that Tom/Joey, is going to rape his wife. Suddenly, he stops, but then she urges him to continue, the two desperately go at it on the stairs with a passion blazing scene. Taking the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions not knowing whether Edie should escape or pray she’d never let go. History of Violence has gone on to become classic minting the scene in a history - of film an sex.

AM: When did you consider pursuing acting as career?

(LEFT) PANTS – SANDRO – SANDRO-PARIS.COM SHOES – FRYE – THEFRYECOMPANY.COM HAND WRAPS – EVERLAST - SHOPEVERLAST.COM

MM: My whole life acting was always that dream in the back of my mind that seemed way to far fetched to even take seriously. I played Football my whole life and that was my first love, so acting took a backseat. But, I always have, and to this day, watch a STUPID amount of television and movies (Laughs). So once football was over I told myself to stop being a coward and just do it! And from that moment it's been on! Believe me, if you have a plan, a hard work ethic and skill to match your courage you can achieve anything! I just love acting. I still get excited to go to the movies, get a small bag of popcorn, small coke, and just slip away into this pretend world! Without sounding too corny, it's the only thing that gave me the same feeling football did. The rush, the excitement, the teamwork, the sense of accomplishment. And you can NEVER be the best! You might where the crown one year, but the next could be totally different! You constantly have to work hard, grow and adapt. There's no end! And I love that.

AM: On Graceland you played Joe "Johnny" Tuturro, How much of yourself did you put into your character "Johnny”? MM: I believe actors ALWAYS put a lot of themselves in their role. No matter how different the character may seem from them personally, there's still something inside them that allows them to go to that place in their mind. All you have to do is be able to relate, the rest will fall into place with hard work. Me and "Johnny" do have a lot in common. We both have a big heart, very loyal and are very sensitive. But, unlike "Johnny", I'm not always laughing and joking. I mean, yes, most of the time I am in a great mood (laughs), life is amazing. But I am very much an introvert. I like to read, write, and just have some good alone time to focus and put things into perspective. So yes "Johnny" and I are very similar and different at the same time.

AM: Are you working on any upcoming project, can we expect you anytime soon on the big screen?

MM: I feel like our writers are already doing an AMAZING job with the character evolution of "Johnny"! They made a very conscious effort to make sure he WAS NOT always the guy that came in with the funny one liners. I love how as the season progresses he is becoming more a man, while still maintaining his lightheartedness and humor. I have a lot of ideas for where I'd like "Johnny" to go, but honestly I care more about where the show goes. I think this first season was great but I think this show can be a MONSTER!! I pray for multiple seasons so we have the chance to reach it's full potential.

MM: I just got off the set of the Untitled Michael Mann Film. It was a small role but I just couldn't pass up the chance to work with this legendary director who I've been a fan of since I was a kid! Other than that, I'm just hunting for the next gig and praying I can work on GRACELAND for several seasons more! BY: Roshada Powell

AM: What's it like working on set with the other cast members, are they like apart of your family now? MM: You have no idea!!! My cast mates are the shit!!! All we do is laugh all freakin' day long. I don't know how we became so close so fast, but I thank God and the universe for this blessing every night! It's such a treat to genuinely like the people you work with, and not just like them as people but also as actors. There was never a time that I looked into my cast mates eyes and didn't feel complete and utter presence. Like I said earlier, I played football my whole life so having a team that's more like a family is everything to me. TM: Not really I gave myself a break in high school and so when I came back it was almost like I was missed which was a great feeling to have. Its all about choosing those right roles as well. I can thank my mother for that who is also my manger. She is a go-getter and a genius when it comes to this business. AM: You come from a pretty successful family; your sisters are also actresses. Was there ever competition between you guys? TM: Not at all! I mean we love when the other is working and gets something good. We are family and it’s all about supporting one another, and its not like I'm up for the same roles as them lol. AM: You decided to step away from acting for a while, what made you make such a decision and do you regret it at all? TM: I was a huge football guy. I ended up getting a d1 scholarship as well, so I just wanted to focus on that and just be in high school and be a normal student. And I'm so glad I did that. My biggest motto is to really really listen to what your client is asking for not get stuck on what you want. AM: How’d you get your start in the celebrity realm of hairstyling? CR: I started by assisting many very well known talented hairstylists who have paved the way for us. I assisted for many years and really took that time to absorb and learn as much as I could. At the same time I worked 7days a week 24hours a day to build myself up. My big first break was when a publicist client (Amanda Silverman) booked me to do her client (Cassie) for GQ magazine.

Responsible for locks of Cassie, Beyoncé, The Jonas Brothers, and Ciara, Cesar Ramirez has officially become the Hair Hero for a new generation. Practically starting the shaved side trend with his client Cassie and at it again with the short hair don’t care trend sparked by Ciara. Cesar continues to blaze new trends in hair apt to put his name in the realm of the great Vidal Sassoon. Now embarking on even grander journey’s as the hair director for Carlos Campos runway show season after season and as the new beauty director for the recently reunited ladies of Danity Kane, ramierz and his work will definitely be the talk of the town. BY: ROSHADA POEWLL

AM: What man in fashion or Hollywood do you think has the best hair? CR: Generally I look at male models for great hair. I love Leonardo DiCaprio, always and oddly I think Zac Efron has amazing hair! AM: You’ve tamed the most famous mane in the world, Beyoncé. What was that experience like? CR: I love love me some B!! She was honestly one of the most well-mannered kindest celebs I’ve ever worked with. It was very exciting to work with someone I admire. She is fun on and off the set!!

AM: Is there a hairstyling icon that you look up to, and wish to mold your career after?

AM: You are also responsible for the EPICNESS that is Ciara, how do you guys collaborate?

CR: I have many icons. I grew up in this industry learning from the Vidal Sassoon techniques I think he was a genius. I love Oribe for what he’s done with Jlo and many other celebrities. Orlando Pita and his fierce looks on Madonna in the 90’s. Julien D’ys is the most extraordinary and revolutionary fashion and editorial hairstylist. I was lucky to assist him for a bit when I started and I pray to one day be as innovative as he is.

CR: Ciara and I communicate a lot at all hours of the day and night we must be on each other’s speed dial. Hahaha! She tells me how she is feeling and where she wants to go according to the project we are doing. I sit and research until I come up with my epiphanies and its usually spot on.

AM: Do you prefer being stationed in a salon or traveling the world with your clients? CR: I have a love hate relationship with the salon. It’s my roots and the foundation of who I am without it I couldn’t be where I am. Even though now I’m only in the salon 3-4 times a month my salon clients ground me, but traveling the world and creating moments that are recorded in pop culture and fashion history its my dream come true.

AM: You’ve even wrestled with the Jonas Brothers is it easier working on male celebs rather than females? CR: Technically yes!!! There is just less physical work to do with men. They tend to be more easygoing and less high maintenance. Well at least my male clients have been. The Jonas Brothers are great guys with great natural style so that makes it easy as well. I have. It’s not luck it’s hard work!

AM: Do you approach men and women’s hair the same, or do you have a different eye for both? CR: Men and women’s hair are totally different so I have to say for the most part I do approach them differently. Ultimately everyone wants something that looks good and makes him or her feel good plus fits their lifestyle. AM: What are some trends in men’s hair you think are on the horizon, and should have people taking notice? CR: I think color is still a growing trend in men’s style. When done properly it can be really cool. I loved the super clean retro looks for so long but now I’m thinking it’s about having a classic shape with a messy finish, very British.

CN: Winning Showhouse Showdown on HGTV AM: From a very young age you were intrigued by so many different professions, how did you finally decide to devote the majority of your time to Interior Design?

CN: My journey becoming an interior designer evolved. As a boy I loved to draw and paint and create custom jewelry and sell it. As I grew up I decided that being an entrepreneur would serve me best for a successful life, thus leaving my art behind. Many companies later I found myself back in design with graphic with my printing company. I then realized I was an artist before a business man. I then got into doing faux finishing and Venetian plaster and started another company. Shortly after that I woke up and had an epiphany that I was meant to not just finish walls in homes but to finish everything in a home! I sold my companies and started Charles Neal, the company grew exponentially proving that I finally found my place in this world as an artist.

The basics. A term used to define the building blocks that are indispensable to any balanced wardrobe. A closet’s metaphorical “bread and butter.” Naturally iconic pieces have derived from military uniforms or work clothes, fashion that has been born of necessity and reinvented, as the times demand. But, what denotes a piece to be inducted into the basic’s hall of fame? A Basic must be functional, adaptable, timeless, and have mass appeal. Basics challenge the masterminds of modern fashion to reinvent traditional again and again. Until the day we’re mumbling into our breathing tube, hunched forward and wobbling towards the entrance of some Indian Casino wearing lilac colored polyester stretch pants with a coordinating sweatshirt adorned with butterflies, we will embrace the of bread and butter of our wardrobe basics.
