Passage way A Mixed Used Passage Way Design for Manchester Fall / 2013 Liverpool, UK / Individual Work This project was to design a programmed passage way that connects the main street( Newton Street) and the secondary street ( Port street) in Manchester. A cafe, a store, a dancing studio, a gallery and a office are required to be contained in this programmed passage way. The intervention should fill the gap( infill) with a void instead of a solid. At the beginning of the design, I tried to use different scale of the openings to correspond the distinctive streets and combine different programs to enrich the passing experience. However, as the design going on, I attempted to introduce more elements to express the facade and play with the lighting and shadow.

This site is located in a gap between two buildings, the south is a office building while the north is a hostel. There are many studios and cafe relevant to art surrounding the site. This programmed passage way should be designed to be gentle and interesting to attracted the surrounding people. The newton street is crowed, noisy and the traffic is fast because it connect a highway in the north while the port street is quiet. The side facing the newton street was designed to cut off the noisy environment and take people into a quiet and comfortable environment. The side facing the port street is more open for the pedestrians and the obvious stairs guide the people to the gallery.

Conict and Merge A Small Public Library of Manchester Spring / 2014 Liverpool, UK / Individual Work This project was to design a small public library located in a tight unbar site in Manchester. As a public building, a library plays a strong role in the city spaces in which it is located, and as such, visually and spatially represents, knowledge, education and culture. I needed to appropriately respond to its context and demonstrate the signiďŹ cance of the building within the city.I attempted to combines the context to emphasis much about the facade in order to express the design idea, the transformation between the light and the heavy material.

TO LET OFFICE STUDIO

There is a children reading area, cafe, meeting area, reception and toilet on the ground floor. The furniture of the children area have been designed elaborately for children’s size and the cycle bookshelf in the middle promote the communication between the children and make it more interesting and playful. The glass facade surrounds the ground floor provide communication between the exterior and the interior activities.

ART STUDIO OFFICE On the first floor plan, there is the primary reading area, a archive and a toilet. A cloister in the middle of this plan is designed for the circulation. This library is aimed at providing multiple reading methods for the people. The main reading area is made up of the stair-style bookshelves and the triangle bookshelves. The reader can find out the books as they go up. The triangle bookshelves reveal the umbrella structure so as to increase the efficiency of the space usage.

On the second floor plan, there is a auditorium for more than 80 people, a office and two seminars. In the office, the officers could observe and inspect the main reading area activies through the large windows. It is possible to form a communication between the officers and the readers.

Vertical Farming An Innovative System for Farming Planting Summer / 2014 Shanghai China

Group Work Layer-greening Dolly and Perspective: Yiwei.Gao System Building: Weijie.Yang Site Analysis and System Section: Xinyu.Hu

Site analysis Urban population have enjoyed sorts of benefits as well as some unexpected consequences from the rapid process of urbanization, those are well-known as the insufficient greening, multiform pollutions, and a decreasing amount of cultivated land. To deal with these problems, maybe a low-cost and accessible way of urban vertical farming which gives out a considerable production of organic vegetables could be one of propagable solutions.

Most megacities are faced the reduced cultivated land problem because of the environmental pollution, high-density population. Vertical farming system could alleviate these problems and bring the healthy life for residents.

My team put forward a principle of mechanical operation to take advantage of the solar exposure, thus to achieve a collective supplementary lighting, irrigation and fertilization at night, and photosynthesis in the day. Besides, the fresh and organic vegetable can be transported into each family for their daily needs.

The local people could buy the dolly in the shop and mix the vegetables which they want. Every long pot is exible, they can be removed according to the growth situations of the vegetables.

Every resident could eat the fresh organic vegetable at home just like moving a small farming into the home

Cultivation Period The planting dolly will be send outside in the daytime for photosynthesis, boxes will be expanded and there will be enough space for plants enjoying the sunshine and breathing.

Transpotation Period The planting dolly will be transported to the inside room to be spraied insecticide or check the health information. The boxes will be compressed by parts of special railway during this process for saving the space inside room.

Harvest Period The planting dolly will be transported to the inside room after being compressed to the minimum size and then they will be vertically transported to the ground oor to be deliveried to dierent place like supermarket, market or individual home.

Soil Culture Dolly

This dolly is specialised for soil culture plants. Each container is exible and hung over the bracing of the dolly. Every layer has the individual water pipe for the eďŹƒcient irrigation work. The dolly could be folded during the transportation process by the steel rail, the minimum width is only half of the original width to take advantage of saving space.

Vine Dolly

This dolly is specialised for vine plants. Both sides of the dolly provide the thin steel bracing for the growth of vines. There are two containers at the bottom of the dolly oering the soil, water and nutritions.

Flotage and Movement A Ferry Terminal of Liverpool Fall / 2014 Liverpool, UK / Individual Work This project was to design a free-standing ferry terminal located along the Mersey River, providing multiple programs including a ticket office, a store, a gallery, a restaurant, a cafe and the waiting area. This studio firstly investigate the relationship between material, structure and geometry and then apply the results from the precedented study to the ferry terminal design. I chose a campus restaurant designed by architect Barkow Leibinger as the precedented study. Focusing on Voronoi timber structure and examining how timber may influence and determine architectural results.

Precedented Case Study Architect : Barkow Leibinger This site is located in an open space along Mersey River opposed to Liverpool. The original ferry terminal is required to remove and designed a new ferry terminal along the original footprint. In addition, the historical tower is required to protected and kept and combined with the ferry terminal. This ferry is an important traffic tool for the residents and the visitors between Birkenhead and Liverpool. As the third-year student, we are required to use Rhino and Grasshopper to assist our design. The ferry terminal is a system which combines the fixed and flexible parts for the continuous changing tide. To satisfy this feature, I tried to design a floating system, the landing space could be floated above the river like a floating house and the heavy roof could create a “floating” atmosphere.

Then, I tried to design the ticket office on the land while other program floating above the water

In fact, it is not feasible to float most program above the water according to the fast river. I moved most progarm back to land and left landing space above the water

I attempted to use voronoi pattern to wrap the ferry terminal and the facade is changed with the required lighting interior. A bridge connect the fixed part and the flexible part.
