Physio Tower Highline LoLux Apartment 2016Fall New York, USA Individual Work

Under the pressure of fast pace life in New York, the modern person strives to pursue a more active and healthy lifestyle. However, limited time and a lack of proximity to exercise facilities can discourage many from pursuing this type of lifestyle. "Physio Tower" is an apartment tower located near the Highline in West Chelsea, bridging the Highline and 10th avenue. This residential tower provides exercise facilities for the public, as well as a variety of luxury and low-income units. At the center of the tower, there is a spiral staircase which provides access to every level of the tower and encourages residents to have the option to use the staircase rather than taking the elevator. "Physio Tower" provides both luxury and low-income units for different families. The tower's facade includes two layers, the outer layer, which is an interpretation of natural structures, such as branching, and the inner layer, which serves as the dividing walls of the individual units. The outer layer grows from the central elevator core and wraps around the housing unit. Not only does this system perform aesthetically, but it also transforms into the frame of window and handrail of the balcony.

CARNIVAL: architecture promenade Cultural Architecture 2015Fall Philadelphia, USA Individual Work

A fascinating carnival will surely impress you by a series of moments, which also works for space experiences during an architecture promenade. The pattern was chosen as the key to achieve the object above. With the process of projecting, distorting, boolean, erosion and copy on the pattern itself, the outcomes in a sequence of massing, landscape, space, structure, mullion, and detail were eventually generated. The climax of the work is the auditorium, which is surrounded by promenade paths wrapped in skin, besides the idea of “room within room was also conducted in the design to create diverse spaces. Part roof of the building could be taken as activity spaces, which makes it interesting when communicating with others indoor or outdoor. You can feel the rhythm of the building changing along with its shape and space. The natural light was introduced to enhance the placelessness of some important spots such as market, gallery and exhibition hall.

Cinematic Architecture A Bridge House in Manitoga 2015Fall Manitoga,USA Individual Work This project starts from conceiving a new story to edit a 2-mintues movie on the basis of two selected roles and scenes from a Chinese movie named "STILL LIFE" by Zhangke Jia happened in a quarry site located in Manitoga. The movie leaves a question on how to help the residents to live beside a dam and I proposed a vertically transformed megastructure to address this. The bridge, as the primary structure, connects both sides of the reservoir and supports each house component which could move up and down automatically along the space-grid system in order to accommodate the changing water level. The concept of "transformation" is expressed both vertically and horizontally. This aim of the project is to create a potential kind of flexible forms to face the challenge of the future world.

The government put fo plan to build a dam in M (Our Site), according to original residents had their home.

Storyboard:"renascence"

orward a Manitoga o which, to leave

Ming, the head of the demolition team, was in charge of a removal plan

Hong led a protest to the government in order to protect her hometwon.

However, the protest failed

Ascending water leverl submerged Manitoga eventually.

How to keep these residents live in Manitoga--their forever hometown after the dam is built?

Site Analysis

Final water level Mid-term water level Initial water level

Current Path

Houses were gradully submerged under water

Past Path

The bridge as the primary structure connects the east side and the west site to short residents' path

These houses units should be flexible to move up and down with the changing water level.

Transformer Tactic Application Transfomer tactic is applied to two aspects of this gallery project. Firstly, the vertical volumes could move up and down to accommodate the changing water. Secondly, some walls of each volume could rotate 0 to 360 degree to change space.

Freezing Waves

4 Thermal Spa 2015 Spring Liverpool, UK Individual Work

The terrain of coastal cliff decides the design of column grid and makes it possible to create diverse activity as well as space such as outdoor-layered pools. The building surface has its unique emphasis on energy conservation: on one hand, environment-friendly waved roof not only increases the green covering for the interior part but ensures the daylighting for the exterior. On the other, the adjustable louvers on the facade meet the demand of landscape and the prevention from glare. The flow of the thermal spa is organized in a way of interior (buying tickets, changing clothes. etc.)----exterior(exterior pool)---interior(sauna, interior pool, massage, etc.) , to combine the architectural spaces with landscape elements. In addition, the building mainly made of local woods provides an enjoyable and relaxing facility for the tourists.

Tree Holder Principle of Digi Fabrication Furniture Design 2016 Spring Philadelphia, USA Individual Work

Exploring digital fabrication technology to design a furniture is the principle of this course. Lathe is the machine could sand the column to be tapered. 3d print technology makes diverse complicated joints to be achievable. Digital fabrication makes complex model to be accurate and crafted.

The Power of Shadow A Small Pavilion for Testing Voronoi Structure 2014Fall Liverpool, UK Group Work

After analysing an existing voronoi precedence, we were asked to explore the structure coherent form and later developed innovative geometric solutions. We gave the continuous vaults a voronoi structure, which was elegant but stable. Hollow hexagons bring light between them. To make a hexagon which grows out of the vault and which makes its own rhythm of no-light, light, no-light, light: that is the power of shadow. Our group taked advantage of the Digital Fabrication, laser cut about more than 200 pieces to make the final model.
