Gary Stahl
Benefit for
M
y uncle, Gary, found a lump on his head on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017. He went to the clinic and initially found out it was a Lymphoma, a fatty mass of cells. After many tests, we later found out that the mass was, in fact, a tumor. The tumor measured 3 inches by 1.25 inches. On October 4, we found out that this tumor was a Plasma Sarcoma, a form of blood cancer. Our body has white blood cells that “tum on’ when they find infection in the body, and ‘turn off’ when the infection is gone. Unfortunately, Gary’s didn’t ‘turn off’ like they were supposed to, and they have since grown into a large mass of cells. He is currently going through an intense round of radiation to attempt to beat the beast we are fighting.

Corn harvest lingers on
Staff photo by Howard Lestrud
The corn harvest continues in many farm communities in Steele County and throughout southeastern Minnesota. Emptying corn just east of Ellendale is Rick Johnson of New Richland. Harvest has been hampered and dragging out because of snow and wet conditions throughout most of the fall.
Leadership for successful employee management to be offered in St. Charles “Leadership for Successful Employee Management,” a labor management workshop, will be taught at the St. Charles City Hall. Nathan Hulinsky, extension educator; Bob Milligan, professor emeritus; and other extension educators will teach the three-session course. The workshop will feature a wide variety employee management topics aimed at helping farms attract and retain employ-
ees. Through hands-on activities, tool development, and class discussions, participants will create an employee handbook and build leadership skills. Hulinsky explains, “Labor management is a top concern for many farmers. It is hard to find and keep good employees. This class will help farmers develop leadership skills and risk management tools to set themselves up for successful labor management.”
MFU and Farmers Union Insurance invest in 40 Square The Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) Executive Committee voted on Nov. 3 to approve the organization’s purchase of shares in 40 Square Cooperative Health Solutions, a new health care cooperative for Minnesota farmers. MFU, a grassroots organization, has its heritage in the cooperative model. 40 Square is a relevant example of farmers forming a cooperative to collectively address a need. “Ever since farmers in Jackson County started organizing for fairer commodity prices in the early 1910s, MFU has been a strong backer of new cooperatives,” said Gary Wertish, President of MFU. “We supported legislation passed this year that allowed Minnesota farmers and agribusinesses to form cooperatives for health care, which
makes groups like 40 Square possible. We are happy to make this investment in 40 Square.” Farmers Union Insurance Agency, an MFU-owned company serving the insurance needs of Minnesotans, is supporting the marketing efforts of 40 Square. The majority of FUIA agents have signed up to write 40 Square health care policies for their farmer customers. “Farmers Union Insurance Agency is always seeking sustainable health insurance options for Minnesota’s farm families and their employees, and we feel 40 Square will be a viable option today and into the future,” said Rodney Allebach, President and General Manager of FUIA. “We are proud to partner with Minnesota Farmers Union and 40 Square by taking a stake in this partnership.”
Classes meet on Dec. 11, Dec. 21, and Jan. 4, 2018. Each class meets from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Two one-hour webinars will be held on Dec. 18 and Jan. 11 to discuss implementation of course tools and foster further learning. Merchants Bank and Minnesota Dairy Initiative are sponsors of the program. North Central Extension Risk Management Education has provided grant
USDA appoints executive director for Farm Service Agency in Minnesota The Trump Administration recently appointed Joe Martin as the new State Executive Director (SED) for the USDA Minnesota Farm Service Agency (FSA). Martin will join the Minnesota FSA team on Monday, November 13. Martin is a graduate of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. He has nearly 20 years of experience working within the non-profit, government and private sectors of agriculture, including time with the Minnesota and American Farm Bureau Federations. He has also served as an appointed assistant commissioner at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and worked as an independent agriculture consultant. Martin is a lifelong Minnesotan, raised on a farm in Central Minnesota. He now lives in rural LeSueur County where his family farms and where he and his wife, Staci, run a small cattle operation. The Farm Service Agency serves farmers, ranchers and agricultural partners through the delivery of effective, efficient agricultural programs. The agency offers farmers a strong safety net through the administration of farm commodity and disaster programs. FSA continues to conserve natural resources and also
provides credit to agricultural producers who are unable to receive private, commercial credit, including special emphasis on beginning, underserved and women farmers and ranchers. Under the direction of Secretary Sonny Perdue, the USDA will always be facts-based and data-driven, with a decision-making mindset that is customer-focused. Secretary Perdue leads the USDA with four guiding principles: to maximize the ability of American agriculture to create jobs, sell foods and fiber, and feed and clothe the world; to prioritize customer service for the taxpayers; to ensure that our food supply is safe and secure; and to maintain good stewardship of the natural resources that provide us with our miraculous bounty. And understanding that we live in a global economy where trade is of top importance, Secretary Perdue has pledged to be an unapologetic advocate for American agriculture. As SED, Martin will use his leadership experience to oversee FSA programs in a customer-focused manner to ensure a safe, affordable, abundant and nutritious food supply for consumers.
funds. Cost is $45 per person and $70 per farm due to sponsorship and grantor funds. Space is limited. Registration is open. To register, please visit https://z.umn. edu/30g5. For more information on the workshop, please call or e-mail Nathan Hulinsky, 218236-2009 or huli0013@umn. edu.
Minnesota Crop Report
Minnesota farmers took full advantage of the 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork and harvested 19 percent of the statewide corn acreage during the week ending November 12, 2017, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Other field activities included baling corn stalks, moving cattle off pasture, spreading fertilizer, and working on fall tillage. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 84 percent adequate and 14 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 82 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus. Corn for grain harvest advanced 19 percentage points, but remained 12 days behind the 5-year average, bringing the total harvest to 79 percent complete. Corn moisture content of grain at harvest averaged 18 percent. The sunflower harvest was 93 percent complete, 4 days ahead of last year’s pace.

Doing Business locally 45 years.
Jeannine and Gerry Hensley pause for a photo in their new restaurant.
Jeannine Hensley’s dream came true at last The Arkansas native was set to open her restaurant, Misplaced Magnolia Southern Bistro and BBQ, on Nov. 13 in downtown Kasson. The establishment at 111 W. Main St., in part of the former Leuthold’s building, features Southern entrees including Memphis-style pulled pork sandwiches, Memphis-style dry-rub ribs, Texas beef brisket, and Southern smoked chicken. The overall theme: “Where the Mid-South meets the Midwest.” “We’re excited for everyone to come in and see the place and enjoy some food,” said Hensley, a Kasson resident who owns the restaurant with her husband, Gerry. “We really wanted to do something that was not only good for us, but good for the community. I’m looking forward to giving Kasson one more place to stay and eat, instead of driving to Rochester.” “We’re very excited,” Gerry Hensley said. “It’s been a dream of Jeannine’s for a long time. I’m just glad we can finally make it a reality.” Leuthold’s closed in 2006 after more than 140 years in business. The Hensleys purchased the 1900 building in 2010 and began
renovating it early this year. They kept much of its rustic look, digging down five layers to restore the original wooden floor and repainting the old-time ceiling. There is room for 48 diners. “We love it,” Jeannine Hensley said. “We like the character of it.” Magnolia trees are populous in Arkansas. The Hensleys moved to the area when Gerry was hired by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and a friend dubbed Jeannine “a misplaced Magnolia.”
She has worked at several barbeque establishments over the past 30 years. She and Randy have about 12 employees – eight full-time – in the Kasson store. Hensley’s secret to good, Southern-style barbeque? “It’s a very traditional dry rub, smoked low and slow,” she said. “Everyone is going to wake up to the smell of dry rub and brisket.”
Jeannine Hensley, center, talks with employees Mark Smith and Dondee Johnson at her Kasson restaurant, Misplaced Magnolia Southern Bistro & BBQ. Hensley and her husband, Gerry, were set to open the store Nov. 13 in the former Leuthold’s building.
More Magnolia Misplaced Magnolia also will feature sandwiches, salads, soup, burgers, and Southernthemed appetizers including fried green tomatoes, “gator bites,” and catfish nuggets. The “veggies board” will change weekly and seasonally. Entrees cost from $8 to $12, depending on the order. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Call 634-6646, visit misplacedmagnolia.com, or see the Facebook site for more information.

REAL ESTATE & AUCTION GUIDE
Four DIY projects for your first home “Where should I start?” It’s a question many homeowners ask themselves. DIY is a great place to start for new homeowners. DIY projects are very versatile - they can easily be adapted to your skill level, budget and desired project. With a little extra time and creativity,
you can transform your home. Other benefits to choosing a DIY project are that they are typically more cost-effective than the alternative and they offer an added sense of ownership and pride in your home. Since DIY project ideas are endless, it’s important to choose
ones that will improve your home’s value at a reasonable cost. A DIY project should make your life easier and more enjoyable. These are some top recommended DIY projects for firsttime homeowners. They won’t break the bank but they will deliver a bang for your buck.

CALL TO SEE!
1. Add crown molding or update casing and trim. The addition of crown molding to the top of interior walls is a subtle change with big impact. Casing, which is the trim around doors and windows, can also make a huge difference. The replacement of dated crown molding, casing or trim can make a room look newly updated. Go one step further with a fresh coat of paint on the walls, and you’ll basically have an entirely new room. For more information on how to install crown molding, check out these simple steps. 2. Replace doors. Doors are often forgettable, but don’t have to be. Replace hollow core bedroom, bathroom and closet doors with wood alternatives for an instant dash of richness. And don’t limit yourself to traditionally-styled options. From specialty woods to glass panels, there are plenty of options to choose from. 3. Clean and refinish your wood deck. As long as your wood is in good shape, all you need is deck cleaner and wood stain to turn something dated into the focal point of your backyard. You can buy deck cleaner at your local hardware store. Wood deck stains are available there or at a paint store. You’ll be amazed to see weathered
wood look like new again. If you haven’t cleaned or refinished a deck before, here are step-bystep instructions. 4. Update your closets. Add built-in shelving or simply streamline clothes hangers for an organizational boost you’ll thank yourself for every day. Or you can tackle a popular closet upgrade: lining a traditional closet with cedar. Natural cedar looks great, smells great and keeps moths and mildew away. It’s a classic and high-end upgrade that’s not terribly expensive or time-intensive. When your friends or family open your closet, they will be pleasantly surprised.

If not, remove them with a pry bar before the cedar installation. Use nails to attach the cedar to the wall studs, or adhere them with a construction adhesive. Prepare to feel like a bona fide fancy grown-up when it’s done! These are just a fraction of the many DIY projects possibilities. The most important piece of advice is to have fun and don’t be afraid to try new things. The more DIY projects you complete, the more confident you’ll feel. To get started, pencil in a dedicated DIY day on your calendar and enjoy the process!

REAL ESTATE & AUCTION GUIDE
Make your relocation a smooth one In an effort to leave the unemployment line behind them, many men and women have decided they would relocate for jobs if the opportunities presented themselves. According to the Atlas Van Lines 2012 Corporate Relocation Survey, 52 percent of all relocations in 2011 were new hires. That’s not only reflective of people’s willingness to move for new opportunities, but also companies’ willingness to help new hires make smooth transitions. Whereas many companies were forced to reduce or eliminate their relocation budgets during the depths of the recession, more and more of them now have more money to help candidates relocate. Finding a company that’s willing to incur some, if not all, of an employee’s relocation costs is certainly one way to make the process go smoothly. But even those who can’t find such a willing employer don’t have to rule out relocation. The following are a few ways to make relocating for your career as successful as possible.
limited. But many policies leave room for exceptions, so men and women should not be afraid to negotiate. The company may offer additional benefits to entice you to relocate, but the applicant has to ask about those benefits.
of firms give an employee two weeks or less to accept an offer to relocate. So you likely won’t have enough time to find your next place to call home. In such instances, consider temporary housing, ideally offered by the company. If the company does not provide temporary housing, then stay with a friend or family member or contact realtors and explain your situation. A real estate agent should be able to help you find temporary housing and can then help you once the relocation is complete and you’re ready to find a permanent residence.
•Do your homework. Companies often expect quick responses when they offer out-oftowners a position. Applicants likely won’t have enough time between receiving the offer and meeting their deadline to accept or deny the position to do all of the research that needs to be done. Before applying for positions within a given city, learn about the city, including the cost of housing, the reputation of the city’s school districts, and anything else that will ultimately have an impact on your decision to move or stay put. If possible, visit the city before beginning your job hunt. If you find the city fits your lifestyle, then begin your pursuit of a career.
•Know the repayment provisions. While many people consider their decision to relocate a success, others find their new job and city are falling short of expectations. That can be a sticky situation if your new company helped pay for your relocation. Before accepting the job offer and relocating, ask to read the relocation policy and make note of its repayment provisions. Some firms that help relocate new hires or existing employees have the right to ask for those costs back if the employee leaves the company within a given time frame. Know these provisions before you decide to relocate.
•Don’t overlook temporary housing. Many firms provide temporary housing for new hires or existing employees who relocate. This option should not be overlooked. Firms expect quick answers when asking an existing employee or a new hire to relocate. In fact, the Atlas survey found that 72 percent
•Don’t be afraid to negotiate. The Atlas relocation survey noted that 87 percent of the firms surveyed had a formal relocation policy. These policies can run the gamut from very accommodating to extremely
Relocating for an employment opportunity is one way men and women are navigating a difficult job market.
Fast fixes to boost curb appeal for a quick home sale It takes just seven seconds to form a first impression after meeting someone new. The same psychology applies to the first impression people get when shopping for a new home. Within
seconds of arrival, home buyers are forming positive and negative opinions about the property. This is invaluable to home sellers. If you want to sell your home fast and for a premium
price, you can’t afford botching the first impression. Fortunately, revamping the facade doesn’t have to cost a small fortune. In just one weekend you can boost your curb appeal with a few simple updates. ENHANCE THE GARAGE DOOR: A garage door accounts for up to 40 percent of a house’s facade. Often ignored, a bland or ugly garage door is a turnoff to home buyers. However, there’s

by trimming hedges and trees to create a tidy appearance. If you don’t have much greenery, adding flowers and other plants can have a dramatic visual impact. Finally, a new layer of mulch will help your landscape features pop and makes any property look instantly fresh again. In addition to clearing brush and updating plants, enhance outdoor spaces with thoughtful use of landscape lighting. Pathway lights on walkways, accent lights in planters, and garden lights around the porch make a space more stylish and useful. Plus, when home buyers view the property in the evening, beautiful lighting will impress them the moment they pull in the driveway. Impressive curb appeal doesn’t have to cost a small fortune. From garage door enhancements to landscape lighting, these quick fixes can capture the attention of buyers and hopefully even start a bidding war.
