Abarth At the Paris Auto Show Abarth underlines its historic philosophy based on the “empowerment”. On show at the stand were the Abarth 595 “turismo” and the “Abarth 595 “competizione”, two authentic Abarths with tuning as standard. In the first version, the tuning concerns the engine, geometry and braking system, in addition to a high level of interior and exterior details. In the Abarth 595 “competizione”, the tuning also affects the exhaust system, with the “Record Monza” exhaust fitted as standard, and the “Abarth Corse by Sabelt” sports seats, inspired by the full-blooded world of racing. The highest customization level is represented by the 695 Edizione Maserati, a Limited Edition (499 vehicles). The car is an exclusive convertible with special technical features developed by Abarth engineers for Maserati. To start with, the 1.4 Turbo T-Jet 16v engine boosted to 180 HP and teamed with the electrically-operated manual Abarth Competizione gearbox with steering wheel controls. The car is fitted with performance tires on 17” alloy wheels featuring a special Maserati-inspired “Neptun” design. The ride and braking system have also been strengthened to cope with the extra power: Brembo 305 mm brake discs that can be dismantled with grey fixed four-piston caliper, and special Koni shock absorbers that guarantee performance in complete safety. Many details enrich the interior. Special attention to the carbon fibre kick plate with customised “Abarth 695 Edizione Maserati” graphics and the plate with the car’s serial number, from 1 to 499.

Audi crosslane coupé concept, Audi S3 Audi crosslane coupé concept car is a cosmopolitan vehicle providing pointers to the design language of Audi’s future Q models. The Multimaterial Space Frame of the compact Audi is comprised of three materials – aluminum, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP). The innovative plug-in hybrid drive of the Audi crosslane coupé comprises a combustion engine, two electric motors and a single-stage transmission; its system power is 130 kW (177 hp). The Audi crosslane coupé sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.6 seconds, and in pure electric mode takes 9.8 seconds. The car’s top speed is 182 km/h (113.09 mph). Its average fuel consumption is a mere 1.1 liters per 100 km (213.81 US mpg) and it emits 26 grams per km (41.84 grams per mile) of CO2. The lithium-ion battery has an output of 17.4 kWh, sufficient for an operating range of around 86 km (53.44 miles) in the electric mode. The combustion engine is a purpose-developed three-cylinder TFSI with a displacement of 1.5 liters, delivering an output of 95 kW (130 hp) and 200 Nm (147.51 lb-ft) of torque. The driver of the Audi crosslane coupé can choose between the “cruise” and “race” settings. This 2+2-seater is 4.21 meters long, 1.88 meters wide and 1.51 meters high, with a wheelbase of 2.56 meters. Other presentations at Audi’s stand in Paris included the new A3 Sportback. Audi is initially offering the new A3 Sportback with a choice of one TDI and two TFSI engines. Two diesel engines and one gasoline unit will follow later.

The new Audi S3 is scheduled to launch in early 2013. Once again the lightweight design allows this compact model to combine its dynamic performance to efficiency. The new 2.0 TFSI engine with turbocharging and gasoline direct injection delivers a constant 380 Nm (280.27 lb-ft) of torque to the crankshaft between 1,800 and 5,500 rpm. Rated power at 5,500 rpm is 221 kW (300 hp), and the engine redlines at 6,800 rpm. The S3 delivers impressive performance. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) is completed in 5.1 seconds when equipped with the S tronic (5.4 seconds with the manual transmission). The electronically governed top speed is 250 km/h (155.34 mph). The S3 with S tronic consumes on average just 6.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (manual: 7.0 liters) [34.09 and 33.60 US mpg]. This corresponds to CO2 emissions 159 (162) grams per kilometer (255.89 and 260.17 g/mile) and for models equipped with the manual transmission, an improvement of 1.5 liters compared with the previous version. The RS 5 Cabriolet adds a high-end convertible to Audi’s model lineup. The lightweight textile roof opens and closes fully automatically, at the press of a button, in 15 seconds and 17 seconds respectively, even when driving at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31.07 mph). World Premiere Lexus LF-CC Concept

With its world premiere the Lexus LF-CC concept reinforces Lexus’ commitment to create more engaging, inspirational vehicles through attractive design, a superior driving experience and advanced technologies. Framed by the bonnet lip, deep lower spoiler and powerfully projecting front fender tips, the grille mesh is encased in a deep, metal-finish surround and takes on a pronounced, 3D form. A unique, 3 LED-projector headlamp design is housed in the narrow gap between the lower and upper fender surfaces, without a conventional, one-piece cover. The broad lower fenders are aerodynamically sculpted to manage the flow of air to the engine bay and front brakes, whilst reinforcing the powerful, dynamic road presence of the new Lexus signature frontal design. Further developing a design form initiated on the LF-LC concept and the

high-performance LFA, the sharply sculpted form of an airflow regulating fin flows from underneath the side of the car and upwards through the rear wheel arch. This aerodynamic detail is designed to increase downforce over the driven wheels, further improving traction. The LF-CC’s interior sees a dashboard divided into two distinct zones: an upper, Display Zone, with a multi-display screen located at an ideal distance for at-a-glance viewing, and a lower, Operation Zone, which allows access to the uniquely designed shift lever and an innovative touch tracer display for remote system control. Representing a new Lexus powertrain for future production, the LF-CC is equipped with an all-new, highly efficient, 2.5 litre full hybrid powertrain. It features an all-new, ultra-smooth running, 2.5 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine mated to a compact, high-output, water-cooled permanent magnet electric motor. Adapted specifically for the hybrid powertrain, the all-new 2.5 litre, DOHC, 4-cylinder petrol engine benefits from several technical improvements. It adopts the Atkinson cycle and D-4S direct injection technology to optimise both the power and fuel-efficiency benefits of Lexus Hybrid Drive. Lexus expressed the will to introduce this new hybrid powertrain into its model range in the near future.

World Premiere Maserati New GranCabrio MC International debut at the 2012 Edition of the Paris International Motor Show for Maserati with the GranCabrio MC. Designed to complete Maserati’s open-top range, the new Maserati GranCabrio MC blends high performance and sports characteristics derived from racing experience with the style and practicality of Maserati’s four seater convertible. The car, 48 millimetres longer than the GranCabrio and GranCabrio Sport, is characterised by a front end which is inspired directly by the MC Stradale. The bonnet incorporates two generous air outlets at the centre to optimise cooling of the powerful V8, and two more air outlets to cool down the brake discs have also been added to the two front wings. The rear is characterised by the large spoiler, for greater negative lift at high speeds. The interior of the GranCabrio MC has received a thorough overhaul with particular attention paid to ergonomics. The new seats are completely redesigned from both an aesthetic and functional point of view and enhanced with high-quality materials. As with the most sporty GranTurismo in the range (the GranTurismo Sport), the GranCabrio MC also adopts the new 4.7-litre V8 engine, which delivers 338 kW (460 HP) together with substantial torque of 520 Nm at 4,750 rpm. Like other sports models in the Maserati range, the GranCabrio MC adopts an automatic six-speed ZF transmission. The new power unit, in combination with the MC Auto Shift transmission, is now able to propel the GranCabrio MC, in closed soft top configuration, to a top speed of 289 km/h with acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

World Premiere McLaren P1 McLaren Automotive used its first ever international motor show appearance to preview its next generation ultimate supercar: the McLaren P1. As one can imagine, this supercar takes much of its technological and spiritual inspiration from the company’s Racing division. The large rear wing adjusts automatically to boost downforce and optimise aerodynamics. It can extend rearwards by up to 300mm on a racetrack, and by up to 120mm on the road. The pitch of the rear wing can increase by up to 29 degrees. The McLaren P1 also has a DRS (drag reduction system) function, like a Grand Prix car, to reduce downforce and increase straight line speed. But while a Formula 1 car has a moveable flap in the rear wing, the McLaren P1’s rear wing’s pitch is adjusted. McLaren P1’s aerodynamics is further optimised using two flaps mounted under the body ahead of the front wheels. These change angle automatically, operating through a range of 0-60 degrees. The McLaren P1 is a mid-engine design that uses a carbon fibre monocoque and roof structure safety cage concept called MonoCage. The car on stage in Paris was showcased as a design study. Next year a production version, which McLaren aims to put on sale within 12 months will be revealed. When the McLaren P1 goes into production later next year, it will sit above the 12C and 12C Spider, in terms of both price and performance.

World Premiere

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Mitsubishi was present in Paris with the world premiere of the new Outlander PHEV. Outlander PHEV is the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, using Mitubishi Motor Company’s own Plug-in Hybrid EV System powertrain derived from 100% electric systems used on the i-MiEV and other Mitsubishi all-electric vehicles. Employing electrical power stored in the drive battery by charging either at home, a charging station or when the system recovers energy when decelerating, the Plug-in Hybrid EV System gives the Outlander PHEV gasoline-sipping performance, with a target combined fuel efficiency in excess of 61 km/liter, greatly superior to that of vehicles powered by a conventional engine, and a cruising range in excess of 880 km. Depending on driving conditions and remaining battery charge,

the Plug-in Hybrid EV powertrain automatically selects the optimum drive mode. EV Drive Mode is an all-electric mode in which the front and rear motors drive the vehicle using only electricity from the drive battery. In Series Hybrid Mode the gasoline engine operates as a generator supplying electricity to the electric motors. The system switches to this mode when the remaining charge in the battery falls below a predetermined level and when more powerful performance is required. In Parallel Hybrid Mode the gasoline engine provides most of the motive power, assisted by the electric motors as required. The system switches to this mode for higher-speed driving when the gasoline engine operates at peak efficiency. The Outlander PHEV uses a Twin Motor 4WD system comprising independent electric motors to drive the front and rear wheels. In addition to decreased friction loss Twin Motor 4WD delivers better response and finer control than conventional mechanical systems. Visitors at the Paris Motor Show were also able to see the European version of new global compact car (Mirage in other regions). The new model is due to be rolled out all over the globe, next in Europe, Australia, and other markets, starting february 2013.

World Premiere smart forstars

An interesting premiere at the Paris Auto Show was the smart forstars. The electrically driven smart forstars is an SUC (Sports Utility Coupé) with room for two people and plenty of stowage space. Its name is a reference to the glass roof above the passengers that gives a clear view of the starry sky. The rhombic design of the front and rear lamps is very striking. Outer rings illuminate the indicators and daytime running lamps with a large number of LEDs. The tail lights can even be opened. The charging socket for the high-voltage battery is found inside the right-hand tail light, whilst the left-hand one has space for a beverage can. The study has a longer wheelbase than the current smart fortwo (2470 mm/plus 603 mm) and a wider track (front 1475 mm/plus 193 mm, rear 1475 mm/plus 90 mm). There is a convex glass coupé roof above the passengers’ heads. It joins seamlessly with the glass cover over the cargo area which opens upwards. The lower tailboard at the rear can also be opened electrically. To start with, the tailgate slides down in a parallel position, then the cargo floor including tailboard retracts by 280 mm. The cargo on the 900 mm cargo area is then extremely easy to access. The interior sees the rear-view mirror replaced by a smartphone accommodated in a holder at the top of the windscreen. The driver can see what is happening on the road behind with the help of an integrated video camera. The smartphone also serves as a media source. The compact smart forstars is therefore not only a mobility concept with ample space for two people and a generous cargo area under the glass tailgate, it is also a communication concept that needs no more than a free house wall for a spontaneous cinematic experience. The media player of the projector integrated in the front bonnet is operated via Bluetooth® from a smartphone. A high-quality sound system with additional loudspeakers in the ventilation openings behind the doors enables the drive-in cinema experience to be perfected for friends as well. The electric drive of the smart forstars is based on the innovative drive concept of the smart fortwo BRABUS electric drive. Compared to the production model of the smart electric drive the output of the magneto-electric motor has been increased to 60 kW. The vehicle has a top speed of more than 130 km/h and the lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 17.6 kWh.

A further development of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® technology, the iQ EV’s fully electric powertrain comprises an air-cooled, 47 kW electric motor/generator, a 150 cell, a 12.0 kWh, 277.5 V battery pack, a 3 kW water-cooled battery charger, an inverter, an DC/DC converter and a motor speed reduction mechanism. Maximum torque of 163 Nm is delivered, from a standstill, to the front wheels, giving the iQ EV 0-100 km/h acceleration of 14.0 seconds and a maximum speed of 125 km/h. With a power consumption of 134 Wh/km, this equips the vehicle with an NEDC-certified range of 85 km between charges. Via an illuminated battery charger inlet located beneath a flush-mounted panel at the front of the new iQ EV, the battery pack can be fully recharged in approximately 3 hours from a standard, 230 V household outlet. The new Auris represents Toyota’s C-Segment rejuvenation. At 4.275 mm the overall length of the new Auris has increased by 30 mm, though its wheelbase remains the same at 2,600 mm. The front and rear overhangs have both increased by just 15 mm, and the Auris remains one of the most compact cars in its class. The all-new exterior design allows Auris to reach excellent aerodynamic performance, contributing to both improved handling stability and reduced fuel consumption. At launch the available engines will be: 1.33I Dual VVT –i; 1.6l Valvematic petrol engine; 1.4l D-4D diesel engine; 2.0l D-4D diesel engine. The new Auris Hybrid’s HSD powertrain will also be available. The new Toyota Auris Touring Sports adds the popular wagon body style to the model range’s comprehensive choice of powertrains and will be the first wagon in the segment available with a full hybrid powertrain alongside petrol and diesel engines. As with the new Auris hatchback, the Auris Touring Sports’ bold, dynamic exterior design maximises the aerodynamic benefits of the model’s reduction in overall height, and the dynamic improvements offered by its lower center of gravity. Sharing its 2,600 mm wheelbase, the Auris Touring Sports is 285 mm longer than the hatchback, all of which is dedicated to the extended loadspace of the new wagon. The new Verso represents a fresh, more powerful and sophisticated interpretation of the third generation Toyota MPV’s distinctive, dual-zone styling. It will be available in a choice of 11 exterior colours, of which three are new; Pearl White, Vivid Blue and Solid Blue. The new Verso will be equipped with a choice of five engines, all benefitting from the wide ranging advanced technologies and internal improvement programmes of Toyota Optimal Drive. All engines’ CO2 emissions of the New Verso have been lowered.

Volvo Car Corporation leads the way in car safety: risk of being injured in a Volvo reduced by 50 percent since year 2000 Volvo Car Corporation’s determination to build the safest cars in the world has been acknowledged by several independent crash tests during the past year.

These results come as no surprise to the company’s safety experts. “Our own, extensive accident data base shows that the risk of being injured in one of our latest car models has been reduced with around 50 percent since the year 2000. And we are working on new technologies that will bring the figure down even further” says Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor. Volvo Car Corporation’s knowledge-driven approach to car safety is based on input from real-life traffic; including findings by the company’s own Traffic Accident Research team, which has been operative for more than 40 years. • The efficiency of Volvo Car Corporation’s approach has been highlighted several times recently:Earlier this year, the benefits of the City Safety technology were documented in an IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) report, which stated a collision frequency reduction with up to 22 percent. • A similar study by the Swedish insurance company Volvia shows that Volvos equipped with automatic braking are involved in 22 percent fewer rear end accidents than cars without auto brake. • The final report from the EuroFOT research projects concludes that a car with adaptive cruise control and collision warning cuts the risk of colliding with the vehicle in front on a motorway by up to 42 percent. Future technologies will include improvements of existing safety systems as well as new solutions. “We keep on moving towards our safety vision that nobody should die or suffer serious injuries in a new Volvo car by the year 2020,” concludes Thomas Broberg.

Hydrogen-powered cars tour Europe

Four international car manufacturers joined forces to demonstrate that hydrogen-powered Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) are not just technologies of the future but of today. A total of 7 FCEVs from Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota brought their individual hydrogen fuel cell systems to the European Hydrogen Road Tour 2012. The tour will last one month, with special event stopovers in nine European cities. The tour’s first event took place in Hamburg on September 13. The FCEVs from participating manufacturers did afterwards move towards Hannover, Bolzano, Paris, Cardiff, Bristol, Swindon, London and Copenhagen, where they will be supported by local organisations. The event aims to reach out to politicians, industry leaders, press and public to help improve awareness around FCEVs, delivering the clear message that while the technology exists for Hydrogen Vehicles today, there is a real need to improve hydrogen distribution infrastructure. In a FCEV the fuel cell efficiently transforms hydrogen’s chemical energy into electricity and heat. The only emission is pure water. In combination with an electric motor, it can be used to power vehicles, delivering much higher driving range and faster refuelling time than battery electric vehicles. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles deliver performance comparable with today’s conventional internal combustion engine vehicles but with zero tailpipe emissions and almost no sound whilst driving.

mance low consumption, sport car of tomorrow?

Driving trials of the Porsche 918 Spyder are at the moment in a key phase. The permanent fixture of the test programme for the 918 Spyder – and in the tuning process for all Porsche vehicles – is the 20.8 km long challenging Nürburgring-Nordschleife race circuit… and on September 18th a Porsche 918 Spyder prototype turned in a remarkable best time of just 07:14 minutes. One year before its production launch, the plug-in hybrid super sports car from Porsche AG is already proving its superlative dynamic performance potential , far surpassing all expectations placed in it. The lap time of the Porsche 918 Spyder prototype is one of the best ever clocked for street-legal vehicles with standard production tyres. The car was equipped with production tyres from Michelin as well as the optional “Weissach” package, which integrates modifications that boost driving performance. As a plug-in hybrid vehicle, it logically combines a highperformance combustion engine with cutting-edge electric motors to deliver terrific performance: the best of both worlds endows the 918 with the dynamics of a racing car packing more than 770 hp accompanied by fuel consumption, which at approximately three litres per 100 kilometres, is less than that of most modern compact cars. The 918 Spyder has been designed as a super sports car and the legitimate successor to the Carrera GT. As such, the first goal was obvious: improving yet again on the Carrera GT’s performance. As far as it is currently known, the 918 Spyder will be significantly faster both in terms of acceleration and also in performance on the racing circuit: less than three seconds from zero to 100 km/h (Carrera GT: 3.9 seconds) and less than 7:22 minutes on the Nürburgring Nordschleife (Carrera GT: 7:32 minutes). The core of the 918 Spyder concept is the distribution of propulsive power across three power units, collaboration between which is controlled by an intelligent management system using five preselectable modes. When the vehicle is started up, the “E-Power” mode is the default operating mode as long as the battery is sufficiently charged. In ideal conditions, the 918 Spyder can cover more than 25 kilometres on purely electric power. If the charge state of the battery falls below a set minimum value, the vehicle automatically switches to hybrid mode. In “hybrid” mode, the electric motors and combustion engine work together with the focus on maximum efficiency and minimum fuel consumption. In more dynamic situations, the 918 Spyder selects the “Sport Hybrid” mode for its motors; the combustion engine is now in constant operation and provides the main propulsive force. In addition, the electric motors provide support in the form of an electric boost when the driver demands higher output. “Race Hybrid” is the mode for the highest possible performance and

especially sporty driving style. The combustion engine is chiefly used under high load, and charges the battery when the driver is not utilising the maximum output. The electric motors provide additional support as necessary in the form of a boost when the driver requires even more power. The electric motors are used up to the maximum power output limit in order to provide the best possible performance for the race track. The “Hot Lap” button in the middle of the map switch releases the 918 Spyder’s last reserves and can only be activated in “Race Hybrid” mode. Similar to a qualification mode, this pushes the traction battery to its maximum power output limits for a few fast laps. This mode uses all of the available energy in the battery. The main source of propulsion is the 4.6-litre, eight cylinder engine delivering more than 570 hp, which was directly derived from the power unit in the successful RS Spyder and explains why it delivers engine speeds of up to 9,000 rpm. The V8 engine is coupled to the hybrid module, the 918 Spyder being designed as a parallel hybrid like Porsche’s current hybrid models. Essentially, the hybrid module comprises a 90 kW electric motor and a decoupler acting as the connection with the combustion engine. As a result of the parallel hybrid configuration, the 918 Spyder can be powered at the rear axle both individually by the combustion engine or electric motor or via both drives jointly. A seven-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission takes care of power transmission to the rear axle. In order to ensure that the installation position and thus the centre of gravity of the entire vehicle were kept low, the gear unit was turned “on its head”, by rotating it 180 degrees about its longitudinal axis. On the front axle there is another, independent electric motor with an output of approximately 80 kW. The front electric drive unit drives the wheels via a fixed ratio. A decoupler ensures that the electric motor can be decoupled at high speeds to prevent the motor from over-revving. The drive torque is independently controlled for each axle. This makes for a very responsive all-wheel function, offering great potential for traction and driving dynamics. The electric energy for the electric motors is stored by a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery comprising 312 individual cells with an energy content of approximately seven kilowatt hours. The plug-in interface in the B-column on the front passenger side enables the storage battery to be connected directly with the home mains supply and charged. The charger is located close to the traction battery. It converts the alternating current of the main supply into direct current with a maximum charge output of 3.6 kW. For example, using the charging cable supplied with it, the battery can be charged within four hours. A compact charging station

is also supplied as standard with the 918 Spyder. This can be installed permanently in the driver’s garage. It permits rapid and convenient charging within approximately two hours. In order to convert the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electric current when braking significantly more effectively than today, Porsche’s developers created a new generation of the recuperation system. The 918 Spyder can brake using both electric motors and thus recuperate energy for the traction battery. The car features a ceramic braking system (PCCB) as standard. The load-bearing structure of its body comprises a monocoque with a unit carrier, both of them made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). This concept has a critical part to play in the curb weight of less than 1,700 kg., an outstandingly low value for a hybrid vehicle in this performance class. A system of adjustable aerodynamic elements ensures unique, fully adaptive aerodynamics that automatically reconcile optimal efficiency and maximum downforce.

The Porsche 918 Spyder’s multi-link chassis is inspired by racing car construction, complemented by additional systems such as the adaptive shock-absorber system PASM and rear-axle steering. Basically, this comprises an electro-mechanical adjustment system on each rear wheel. The adjustment is speed-sensitive and executes steering angles of a few degrees in each direction. The rear axle can therefore be steered in the same direction or the opposite direction to the front wheels. At low speeds, the system steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels. This makes cornering even more direct, faster and more precise, and reduces the turning circle. At higher speeds, the system steers the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels. This minimises the “pushing” of the vehicle’s rear end when changing lanes quickly. The result is very secure and stable handling.

New Volkswagen Golf

Development of the DNA

Design Is the Golf exterior one of the world’s most recognisable product designs? Yes ! In developing the new Golf the teams led by head designers Walter de Silva and Klaus Bischoff based their work on the one hand on a great deal of creative freedom that allows many different approaches for a new design, while on the other also on the principles of the Volkswagen design DNA. This DNA creates a unique, unmistakable language of product features and design and leaves on the one hand a familiar feeling and yet on the other a new sensation in the eyes of the observer. Over recent years, the Volkswagen designers have crystallised a selection of core elements from the brand’s history, elements such as the first Golf’s roofline, side windows and radiator grille crossbeam in its reduced form and the Golf Mk4’s typical C-pillars and wheel arches. Marc Lichte, leading designer for the exterior, explains: “We sought to underline the new Car’s proportions with design elements. Below the door handles we have integrated the now clearly visible and

very sharp character line. While this line is broken by the wheel arches, it is otherwise continuous and is stylistically reflected in the chrome bars of the radiator grille and headlights and at the back in the white lateral bars of the rear light clusters. Set deep down all the way around, this line lowers the apparent centre of gravity and makes the car appear more solid on the road. Another striking element is the new line along the side shoulder directly below the windows. This line begins at the front in the headlight, then glides under the wing mirror, which is positioned right on the line, all the way through to the rear side window, underling the premium proportions of the new Golf ”. On the rear typical Golf elements include the clear geometry of the rear lights, the rear window stretching all the way to the C-pillars and the large homogenous surface around the Volkswagen badge.

“Six generations of the Golf: 1974 to 2012. That represents 38 years of continuous success for the world’s bestselling car with sales totalling 29.13 million. It has also meant a tremendous economic impact, safeguarding jobs, and has served as an influential measure of technical progress over the decades - says Martin Winter-korn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG we want to continue this successful story in the seventh generation Golf”. Officially there has never been any numbering of the Golf generations by Volkswagen, so no Golf Mk1, Mk2, Mk3, Mk4, Mk5, Mk6 or Mk7. With now seven generations of the car, it is however easier to place them historically… The fact is that with exactly – as of July 31 2012 – 29.13 million units sold since 1974, the Volkswagen Golf, including its derivatives such as the Cabriolet and Variant, is one of the most successful motorcars in the world. The fact that the new Golf is conceptually based on the Modular Transverse Matrix has far-reaching consequences: this Golf has been completely redesigned in practically every area: the vehicle body, the interior, the engines, all of the information and entertainment systems and the numerous new driver assistance systems.

Lightweight Design 100 kg. less weight reduces fuel consumption appreciably, but to save up to 100 kg in weight is a complex task, especially in the compact class. Volkswagen engineers were able to introduce innovative manufacturing methods reducing weight as well as enhancing safety. If you divide the Golf up into the primary areas of electrical equipment, engines, running gear and superstructure, an analysis yields - depending on model, specification and type of engine - the following split for the weight reduction: Up to -6.0 kg = Electrical Up to -40.0 kg = Engines Up to -26.0 kg = Running gear Up to -37.0 kg = Superstructure (23 kg = body) In purely mathematical terms the total potential saving is thus even as much as 109 kilograms. Due, however, to the configuration options that can be implemented in practice, the maximum achieved in any one vehicle is 100 kg. The body must be strong and rigid to guarantee

optimal safety and maximum comfort. Nonetheless, its structure should remain athletically lean, so that the overall vehicle is light and efficient. Strong yet lightweight – harmonising these two parameters continues to be one of the greatest challenges in the automotive world. Especially when the car – like the Golf – needs to be an affordable car for millions of people. A 23 kg reduction in weight with more stringent crash and riity requirements as well as larger vehicle dimensions – achieved without additional costs – demonstrate that this can be done successfully.

Engines Volkswagen developed two completely new engine generations for the Golf. Every version is fitted as standard with a Stop/Start system (reducing fuel consumption by up to four per cent) and brake energy

recovery mode (cutting CO2 by around four per cent). With all measures combined it was possible to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 23 per cent. For the first time the Golf is now also being offered with adriver profile selection system, a tool with which forward-thinking drivers can achieve a particularly efficient style of driving. There are a total of four driving modes available: Eco, Sport, Normal, Individual and, in combination with DCC (adaptive chassis control) Comfort. In the Eco driving profile engine management, air conditioning and other ancillary systems are controlled such that optimum fuel consumption is achieved. The petrol engines used are exclusively turbocharged and direct-injection TSI engines (four valves, four cylinders) and deliver 63 kW/85 PS and 103 kW/140 PS. Even the base model excels with an average fuel consumption figure of just 4.9 l/100km (equivalent to 113 g/km of CO2) – 0.6 litres less than the previous corresponding model. For the first time there will also be a Golf with cylinder cut-off (ACT active cylinder management). The model fitted with this is a 140 PS TSI, which already satisfies the future EU6 standard. Average fuel consumption is just 4.8 l/100km (112 g/km CO2). The diesel injection engines, also fourcylinder, four-valve versions and here too generally turbocharged, initially deliver 77 kW/105 PS and 110 kW/150 PS. Just how efficiently the diesel engines work in the new Golf is shown by the TDI base model with 105 PS and average fuel consumption of just 3.8 l/100km (99 g/km CO2). In addition, the Golf’s 150 PS TDI is also extremely efficient, as underlined by its average fuel consumption of 4.1 l/100km (106 g/km CO2). The best figures are ultimately delivered by the Golf BlueMotion: making thorough use of all the individual solutions in Volkswagen‘s technological toolkit, the new Golf BlueMotion emits just 85 g/km of CO2 and consumes on average only 3.2 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres.

Innovations New assistance systems include the multi-collision brake system that automatically brakes the vehicle when it is involved in an accident in order to significantly reduce its residual kinetic energy. Triggering of the multicollision braking system is based on detection of a primary collision by the airbag sensors. Vehicle braking by means of the multi-collision braking system is limited by the ESC control unit to a maximum deceleration rate of 0.6 g. This value is the same as the deceleration level provided by Front Assist. The driver’s ability to control the car is thus assured even when automatic braking is triggered. Also the proactive occupant protection system is making its debut in the Golf. If the proactive occupant protection system detects a potential accident situation – such as by the initiation of hard braking via an activated brake assistant – the seatbelts of the driver and front passenger are automatically pre-tensioned to ensure the best possible protection by the airbag and belt system. When a highly critical and unstable driving situation is detected – such as severe oversteer or understeer with ESC intervention – the side windows (except for a small gap) and sunroof are closed. That’s

because the head and side airbags offer optimal support and thereby achieve their best possible effectiveness with windows and sunroof almost fully closed. New assistance systems also include the standard XDS electronic differential lock (as found in the previousgeneration Golf GTI), ACC adaptive cruise control plus Front Assist and a City Emergency Braking function, Lane Assist lane-keeping assistant, fatigue detection, traffic sign recognition and the latest generation of the automatic parking assistant ParkAssist including OPS (360 degree display) as well as the automated light functions Light Assist and Dynamic Light Assist. There are other new technologies as well, such as progressive steering (optimised dynamic performance and better comfort), an electronic parking brake, a newly developed ergonomic sport seat (ergoActive seat), a guard against using the wrong fuel in the diesels, a new climate comfort windscreen that is also a first in this segment and a new generation of information and entertainment systems.

Infotainment systems Volkswagen is equipping the Golf with a new generation of radio and radio/navigation systems with completely new designs. All systems have a touchscreen as standard. The new device generation is available in six extension levels and in three different display sizes: 5-inch, 5.8-inch and 8-inch. For the first time, Volkswagen is implementing displays that have proximity sensors (5.8-inch display and above): as soon as the driver or front passenger moves a finger near to the touchscreen, the system automatically switches from display mode to input mode. The display mode shows a screen that is reduced to just the essentials. In operating mode, on the other hand, the elements that can be activated by touch are specially highlighted to simplify intuitive operation

Model lines Available at launch in three model lines, the Trendline (base model), Comfortline and Highline (top model), the new Golf has been enhanced in all areas compared to its predecessor. Nevertheless – and this fact is attributable among other factors to the synergies produced by the Modular Transverse Matrix – it has not become any more expensive to own a Golf. In Germany, for example, the new Golf 1.2 TSI Trendline delivering 63 kW/85 PS costs € 16,975. The price is thus exactly the same as the now superseded entry-level model delivering Golf 1.4 MPI.

The displays also have a function that enables lists to be scrolled or CD covers in the media library to be browsed by a wipe of the hand. In designing the new generation of devices, Volkswagen’s primary goal was to integrate the most advanced infotainment applications into the Golf, which should be consistently easy to use, totally intuitive and therefore safe to use while driving.

Interior The slight increases in length and width, as well as the increased wheelbase and optimised track widths, have a perceptible effect on space in the interior. The Golf Trendline and the mid-range Comfortline can be ordered with a front passenger backrest that folds fully forward. In addition, the 60:40 split backrest, which is standard on all versions of the new Golf, can also be folded down. On the Comfortline and above, the Golf also has an opening in the middle of the rear seat backrest for loading long items. The space concept of the new Golf also exhibits a cargo capacity that has grown by 30 litres to 380 litres; the variable cargo floor can also be lowered by 100 mm. Significantly more room and even better ergonomics define the driver’s area: all information and entertainment systems have been completely redeveloped and updated as the consistent design conveys a sense of sophistication of a luxury class model. The seats of the new Golf are really comfortable. All five seating positions have been redesigned in the front and back. The seats exhibit excellent core properties: wellcontoured body lines and optimal support for dynamic driving. Another new development making its debut in the Golf is the ergoActive seat with extended adjustments for the driver. Along with the familiar seat height adjustment and seat heating, new features are adjustment options for seat depth and angle, electric four-way lumbar support and… a massage function!

Trendline \ Every seventh generation Golf sold around the world will in general be fitted with seven airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). In comparison to the previous model the added standard features on the Golf Trendline include items such as the touchscreen module with 5-inch TFT display, a fuel tank inlet with a guard to prevent putting in the wrong fuel (for the diesel versions), the (stow-away) luggage compartment cover, ECO-HMI (consumption-related graphics and information on the multifunction dashboard display), the multi-collision braking system, the electronic parking brake with AutoHold function, the XDS transverse differential lock, the Plus tyre pressure indicator, brake energy recovery mode, Stop/Start system and a variable floor in the boot. Fiat Viaggio

at Sedan made in China

CEO of Fiat Chrysler Group mr. Sergio Marchionne with GAC General Manager mr. Zenge

The first Fiat Sedan made in China Thanks to Fiat-Chrysler Group’s leading technology and Guangzhou Automobile Group’s (GAC) long experience in the Chinese market, GAC Fiat has been growing rapidly in just two years since its establishment and has become an emerging force in the Chinese auto industry. As a young and strong joint venture, GAC Fiat is quickly becoming one of the key players in the Chinese auto market, thanks to its attractive products, expanding dealer network (91 dealers and 125 showrooms have opened across the country) and an interesting products line-up, featuring the new Fiat Viaggio sedan, the small 500 and the crossover SUV Fiat Freemont. Taking account of the exclusive Italian style, spot-on market positioning, and high-quality marketing events, GAC Fiat will definitely achieve remarkable success in 2012. The all-new premium class Fiat Viaggio Sedan’s debut has been without a doubt one of the eye-catchers at the April’s Beijing International Auto Show. The Fiat Viaggio symbolises an ideal journey between Italy and China, and its Chinese name Fei Xiang reinforces this message, evoking the experience of a flying dream towards the discovery of a new lifestyle totally befitting the brand positioning La Vita è Bella (life is beautiful) which embodies the Italian philosophy of living life to the fullest with passion and style.

Inspired by Italian design, the new Fiat Viaggio teams modern-day fashion elements with a note of lasting classics that add to the passionate Italian legend. Designed by Fiat Group’s Style Centre in Turin, this car has a timeless, clean-surfaced expressive exterior design that blends fluid and curvaceous forms with strong proportions. A contemporary Fiat “face” ensures unmistakable brand identity. Rear tail lamps with refined LED lights deliver an image of superior quality. The Fiat Viaggio is tastefully designed inside and out with discernible Italian style. Fiat designed the Viaggio to be a world compact sedan unlike any others in its segment. Equipped with the overall dimensions which are “lower, wider, and longer” inherited from the architecture and platform upon which it is based, the Fiat Viaggio affords a dynamic appeal tuned to bring class-leading ride and handling. An extended C-pillar enables a sleek silhouette. The abundance of elegant chrome details (from the entry trim level) gives the Fiat Viaggio a highly sophisticated look. The on-board experience is characterised by a “driver centric” interior design: a unique “floating island bezel” which combines the cluster and centre stack and helps distinguish the interior from others. No films, faux woods, or imitation metals: the dashboard boasts a clean, appliqué-free execution, featuring high-quality soft-touch surfacing with tactile grains in an elegant and warm dual tone (black/beige) cabin. Premium quality materials result in premium tactility. A balanced presence of chrome details and silverplated elements add brightness and a touch of sophistication to the elegant dashboard. On top trim levels, the presence of the 8.4 inches touchscreen radio navigation unit adds to the sophisticated

environment a top high-tech feature unique to the segment. Measuring 4,679 mm in length, 1,850 mm in overall width and with a 2,708 mm wheelbase, the Fiat Viaggio is the new C-segment benchmark. This new four-dour, five-seater sedan is based on the CUSW (Compact US Wide) architecture. It is the most advanced within the Fiat Group, and it is also the basis of the new Dodge Dart, recently presented at the Detroit Motor Show last January. The CUSW architecture is, in turn, de rived from the Compact architecture originally developed for the best-selling Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Based on this platform, the Fiat Viaggio is tuned to bring class-leading ride and handling with uncompromised comfort for all its occupants. With excellent driving dynamics, exceptional safety performance, outstanding trim levels and finishes, the Viaggio is ready to spoil the most demanding Chinese customers with a unique blend of power, fuel efficiency, technology and vehicle dynamics. The Fiat Viaggio will be the only car in its segment to offer exclusively sophisticated Turbo engines (1.4L T-Jet 120 HP and 150 HP) on the Chinese market, securing performances that anybody would expect from bigger displacement engines without compromising onfuel economy and maintenance costs. Teamed with the T-Jet Turbo engine is Fiat’s latest generation 6 speed dual dry clutch transmission, and alternatively the well-tested 5-gear manual transmission. The Fiat Viaggio is positioned in the most competitive mid-class segment in China’s automotive market, targeting potential consumers with a passion for life. As the first Fiat-Chrysler joint project, the Fiat Viaggio is produced in the new GAC Fiat production plant in Changsha, in the Hunan province.

First conducted in 1950, Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has grown to be one of the most important world’s celebration of the automobile. Related events include Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, Pebble Beach RetroAuto and Pebble Beach Auctions. This year’s event showcased 220 cars from 33 states and 15 countries and raised $1,077,220 for charity. Only the most beautiful and rare classic cars are invited to appear on the famed 18th hole fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf course, and connoisseurs of art and style flock to see these masterpieces. A 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Saoutchik Torpedo owned by Paul & Judy Andrews of Fort Worth, Texas, was named this year’s “Best of Show” at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, held in August on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. “I’m not sure I can put into words how I feel said Paul Andrews - it’s probably the most wonderful feeling I’ve had in my life. It’s the culmination of a lot of hard work by a lot of people. We’re all excited. It’s the whole package. There’s not a bad line on this car. It was the sports car, the high performance car of its era, and then Saoutchik gave it style and grace. It has power and it has beauty.” Jacques Saoutchik made seven avantgarde Torpedo bodies for the Mercedes-Benz 680S chassis, each differing in their details. The combination of chrome accents and low windshield make this car, shown first at the 1928 New York Auto Show, both a sports car and a luxury touring car. “This car really has everything - said Concours Chairman Sandra Button - it has fantastic German engineering, elegant French styling and a wonderful restoration by Paul Russell. It’s a car you can imagine racing as well as touring. It’s just a marvellous embodiment of everything that is Mercedes.” The judging process at the Pebble Beach Concours is two-fold: Class Judges focus primarily on originality

and authenticity, while Honorary Judges direct their attention to design, styling and elegance. To be eligible to win Best of Show—the event’s top award—a car must first win its class. Other nominees for Best of Show included a 1935 Duesenberg J GurneyNutting Speedster owned by the William Lyon Family of Newport Beach, California; a 1931 Duesenberg J Derham Tourster owned by Joseph and Margie Cassini III, of West Orange, New Jersey; and a 1933 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Figoni Coupé owned by David and Adele Cohen of West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In addition to Saoutchik Coachwork, the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance featured Maharaja Cars, Mercer, Fiat, Mercedes SLs, Sport Customs and German Motorcycles. “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno made a guest appearance at the event, offering tickets to his show and tours of his Big Dog Garage, raising over $50,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County. The previous evening, at the Pebble Beach Auction presented by Gooding & Company, Leno’s Fiat 500 Prima Edizione, initially valued at $25,000 to 35,000, was sold for $385,000 and attracted an additional $215,000, raising a total of $600,000 for the Fisher House Foundation. Also in attendance were Steve Carrell, George Lucas, Adrien Brody and Adam Carolla. The 63rd Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will take place on Sunday, August 18, 2013.

Nurburgring 24 Hours: the winning Audi R8 LMS ultra (Audi Sport Team Phoenix) driven by Marc Bassen, Christopher Haase, Frank Stippler, Markus Winkelhock

On September 9 the Belgian Audi Club Team repeated its victory from last year in the 24 Hours of Zolder. Laurens Vanthoor, Anthony Kumpen, Edward Sandström and Marco Bonanomi won in the Audi R8 LMS Ultra by five laps ahead of their opponents. For the first time ever, an automobile manufacturer managed to decide in its favour four of the most important 24 hours races in Europe: Nürburgring (GT), Le Mans (LMP), Spa-Francorchamps (GT) and Zolder (GT) during just one hot summer. The Audi factory won at Le Mans, the Nürburgring and Spa. With the Belgian private team’s victory, a fourth 24-hour trophy is added to the brand’s incredible endurance record this year. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Audi wrote history by taking victory with a hybrid car for the first time, but the impressive Audi R18 e-tron Quattro was also able to give to the brand an unassailable triumph in the FIA World Endurance Championship, conquered after the Silverstone race victory (August 26) by Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer. After four titles in the Rally World Championship between 1982 and 1984 as well as victory in the FIA Touring Car World Cup in 1995, Audi has once again won another World title.

Automechanika closes with new exhibitor record The World’s Leading Trade Fair for the Automotive Industry (Frankfurt, 11/16 September) closed its doors after setting a new record of 4,593 exhibitors from 74 countries. Around 148,000 visitors from 174 countries came to Frankfurt for Automechanika: “The aftermarket is booming and, despite the current economic disruptions, Automechanika has once again proved to be a reliable constant” said Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt. “With an increase in the number of visitors from East Europe and Russia coupled with a decline in numbers from South Europe, Automechanika reflects the current situation in the world economy”.

Brembo’s new UV-coated discs UV technology, a shiny metallic effect and respect for the environment: just three extraordinary features for the latest Brembo innovation. The new coated disc sets a new standard in the coated disc field. Once again, Brembo is the first company to offer a brand new, highly innovative and avant-garde technological solution to professionals in the automobile aftermarket. As a world leader in the design and production of braking systems for the most important carmakers, Brembo has developed extraordinary expertise in the production of coated discs for all leading vehicle manufacturers. When compared to discs with conventional corrosion protection, UV-coated discs ensure better resistance against corrosion, as confirmed by corrosion resistance testing in a salt spray chamber and moisture resistance tests. UV coating also clearly passes all tests with respect to resistance to high temperatures. In addition to better corrosion resistance, the protective coating (on delivery even on the braking surfaces) ensures complete product protection through to fitting, which helps mechanics significantly in their daily work by avoiding the need to remove oil from discs, which had been used until now to protect the discs. The specially developed coating system uses UV light to fix the coating, which produces considerable environmental benefits. The UV coatings are water-based and solvents as traditionally used in epoxy or zinc-bearing coatings do not appear at all. This also applies to so-called V.O.C. emissions (Volatile Organic Compounds) that cause environmental alterations and are harmful to human health. During the UV coating process, the solvent function is essentially performed by water. Since the coat hardening is performed by UV irradiation and high temperatures are therefore not required, energy consumption is reduced. Additionally, the risk of affecting the geometric features on the disc, which may occur with other coatings applied under extremely high temperatures (more than 300 °C), is also reduced.
