" 傳芳理學 " 在我的家族中,具有傳承的意含。 根據紀載,潮、漳、台灣呂氏後裔共同使用著「金華發祥、蕃衍潮漳、傳 芳理學、紹美文章……」的輩序,永為子孫標文字輩,懷念祖源。在我的家 族中,父親和長輩們也都是依循著這個輩序命名。 而我的輩份,正是 " 理 " 字,因此,我的名字第二個字應該是 " 理 ",但它 在我的名字中卻不可見。這便象徵著是對傳統的秉棄,或是跳脫。 究竟傳承還是一種牽繫。多年後,它便以 " 鯉 " 這個字回到我的綽號中。跳 脫傳統,以嶄新的形態出現。這即是我相信的設計。 "outside the box" The four simple Chinese words 傳芳理學 are significant in my family. In our culture, people take etiquette and family rule seriously. One of the tradition in my family is being named follow the order of these words depending on our generation. Therefore, the words can be seen in the name of my seniorities, indicating their generation orders in the family. However, no one in my generation named after this rule, neither did I. Several years later, the word ironically came back to me and become my nickname, but somehow in a brand new way rather than traditional one , same pronunciation but different type. It's just what I believe in design: thinking out of the box.

REFRiGMATES Refrigerator is always one of the most energyconsuming device in every households. The energy lost when you open it is the main factor leading to your electricity bills. However, REFRiGMATES is designed to reduce the energy lost silently and imperceptibly.

The workshop was run jointly by NCKU Industrial Design class and iNSIGHT (Center of iNnovation and Synergy for IntelliGent Home and living Technology, National Taiwan University), and mainly focus on energy-saving issues to develop ideas that help family save energy. Following the specific design methodology, the goal of the workshop is to evaluate the effectiveness of the design method. In the beginning, we used Persona to evaluate the pros and cons of the character and then set our design goals, in order to brainstorm the scenarios of the character. Afterward we use a stack of behavior cards to develop possible direction, going through several times of divergence and contraction before setting the final type of our product. The whole process is carried out in groups. For our group, the main character is a housewife with a concept of conservation, and the concept of the final product is based on the Persona.

Problem define For housewives, refrigerator is one of the most commonly accessed electronic appliance, and it play an essential rule in their live. Therefore, we choose refrigerator as an object to modify. Refrigerator can be a very energy-wasting device, since the leaking of cold and poor air-circulation make it energy consuming. However, it's sometime inevitable to take time picking up stuff inside, so we focus on points below.

Most of the old people suffering from degeneration, unable to do some position that take strength, like using squatting toilet. Ho-Da is designed to solve the problem of elderly using squatting toilet, making it easier to use toilet and live a healthy life.

Systematization is our main focus as we first define a system, then design for the system. Since the design is mainly for elderly care institutions, we went to visit an elderly care institution located in Tainan City before we started the project. In the whole process, the staff introduced their bathing facilities for us, a huge bath machine especially caught our eyes that we realized taking shower is one of the critical issue for elderly daily lives. As a result, our group set the goal on designing for the private bathroom of the institution, letting elderly use their private space safely, at the same time more convenient as well as autonomous.

Bathroom Safety System Background While visiting the elderly care institution located in Tainan City, we found the bathing facilities unusual, so that we realized taking shower is one of the critical issue for elderly daily lives. Privacy is essential when using toilet and taking shower, however, their physical disability make them barely own it. As a result, we set our goal on designing for the private bathroom of the institution, letting elderly use their private space safely, at the same time more convenient as well as autonomous.
We first listed out the process of using bathroom, then looked for hidden problem. As for Ho-Da, it is designed for the problem of elderly using toilet.

Preblem Analysis/ According to Taipei Association for the Development of Long-term Care, up to 74% of elderly are suffering from constipation. Squat position is commonly believed to be the most proper and beneficial way to excrete, however, it's dangerous for elderly to use squat toilet. Most of the elderly can't squat because of their physical deterioration, and be likely to injure seriously because of the overexertion of thighs and knees. In addition, when using the sitting toilet, people tend to tiptoe, making the angle between body and thighs smaller, but on the other hands hinder the circulation of blood.

Interview/ We talked with an elderly in Tainan who got injured on her waist because of muscle fatigue. She lives in a traditional small house and doesn't live with her children. The bathroom indoor is a mixed bathroom with no spare space, including a sitting toilet and a small stool to prevent constipation. There are no handrail in it, making the enviroment quite dangerous for elderly.

Existing Products Analysis/ There are a bunch of toilet stools on the market, but they are separated from facilities, with no certain storage and is likely to trip people. It's especially dangerous for elderly. Furthermore, they have to bend over or kick it with foot to reach for it when temporary need, making their body unbalanced and possible to fall down.

According to the Journal of Architecture 81, "Survey of the elderly body size and dynamic ability ", we obtain the several relevant human measurement data and apply it. The average height between chair surface and elbows in sitting position is about 230mm, combining another device in our system then become 450mm, therefore we set the handrail height at 680mm, which is comfortable for elbows to lean.

Mission Style Mission Style flourished in the early 20th century, and get its name because of the similarity with the style of Spanish colonial architecture and furniture in American. Simple and heavy, the style puts emphasize on the function and mostly remains the texture of the wood material to show its craftmanship. In addition, parallel lines and geometry in arrangement are commonly used in the style to make the items look harmonious and balanced.

Following the core concepts, I have gone through several times of divergence and convergence before defining the shape of my corkscrew and wine cork.

Discovering the most adequate details, for instance, radius of the handle, thickness of the lines and the combination, with these simple prototypes.
Modeling
I chose dark wood to shape its heaviness and craftsmanship, remaining the original texture. The main sculpting way was by using lathe, sander and band saw machine to make two separated parts before combining it. However, when making corkscrew, the conical body was too slender for machining and broke down, so I took the method of 3D printing covered with acrylic paint as an alternative plan.

SPINyle is a combinative wine set including a corkscrew, a wine cork and a pedestal. Crafted by heavy and firm dark wood, the whole set retain beautiful wood texture on its surface.As for the shape, the common feature is the parallel line converging inward, making the balanced shape with a sense of spinning. Besides, the thickness and heaviness are remained on the grip. Pedestal is attached to make the corkscrew and wine cork easier to keep, and able to put somewhere as a decoration. There are three components for per set.

The corkscrew can be use to tear the packing.

Stack the three parts, which have pedestal in the bottom, then corkscrew and wine cork on the top, to make it fine and stable.
There is small blade hidden in the inner edge of corkscrew, where is designed to be safe from hands. Therefore, just tear the packing of wine with the opposite side.

品嚐一刻台南味,體驗百年台南史。 Just taste Tainan for a moment, and experience the hundreds years history.
Taste the History of Tainan is mainly an experience design, including a set of pottery, specially-made foods and the experience of tasting. We aim to compress hundreds of years’ history of Tainan into an experience of tasting Tainan delicacy. The whole project started with field study, and then the preparation of the foods and hand-made tableware, finally editing the videos and posters for demonstration. Appling the image of ancient city wall in Tainan, the pottery is constituted by five components, respectively represent a dynasty of Taiwan and the evolution of the place. Through the interaction between foods and those potteries, people then understand the story and daily lives of that time. As for the foods, since Tainan is known for its extraordinary sweet foods because of its history background of producing sugar, we choose sugar as our core elements for those foods.
