Constructing Environment week 5 Journal Basic Structural System
In groups of 3 identify the structural system of the geology building Put together a report reflecting all reasoning should be produced as a result of that analysis including: reasons why it was selected + economic implications of decisions + how it works + building process
The wall system The major materials of the old geology building are galvanised steel, glass, aluminaium, concrete, bluestone and bricks. According Ching’s theory, The structural system of a building is designed and constructed to support and transmit applied gravity and lateral loads safely to the ground without exceeding the allowable stresses in its members. The Old Geology Building was constructed in 1927 in red brick instead of sandstone due to budgetary constraints. The drawings of the building is 1:50 scale The foundation system: In the drawing, section A & E, can see the drawings show the foundation of the building. the reinforced concrete has been mentioned. A strong foundation is needed for any sort of buildings, in order to support the building weight. According to the old geology building plan. it looks look a shallow foundation.
The major conponent of the old geology building are bluestone and bricks, however, concrete and masonry bearing Walls are also involved, Concrete and masonry walls qualify as noncombustible construction and rely on their mass for their load-carrying capability. While strong in compression, concrete and masonry require reinforcing to handle tensile stresses. The oild geology building was constucted in 1927. bluestone and bricks were commonly used in those days.

Door and windows: The entrance window is glass, alumination and steel. It has renovated in the later stage. Steel and aluminium were commonly used in 70s. The old geology building were first built in 1927, therefore the metal element definielty introduced in the later stage of the renovation.
