President’s Message The 70th Central States has come and gone. I hope everyone had a good time and a good trip home. It was a great show. I had the chance to see more of the performance events and I really enjoyed them, I was able to watch Barn hunt, Obedience, and Rally and it is truly impressive. Watching the Veterans sweepstakes reminded me that show dogs don’t forget and they enjoy the chance to be out there again. I remembered when Ch. Hiwire First Lady (Jackie) was in the Veteran Sweepstakes. She was so proud of herself. Thanks to Cara we had the Breeders forum and Question/ Answer session. Everyone seems to be happy with our switch to MB-F The new board members are Bill Ashburn, Mike Johnson, Karen Passow , Jackie Thatcher with Fred Salzberg completing the open 2 year term. Although this is my last year as president I look forward to working. with you for the rest of my term on the board. I was reelected president .The first vice president is Paul Gyori and the Second Vice president is Andy DiGiorgio . Linda Albrecht will continue as Treasurer and Kathy Voss as secretary. I am grateful to have this board and these officers to work with. There have been some committee changes and I am happy to say we have been able to fill most of the openings. It would be wonderful to see more members help with the committees. If you have any interest in helping please contact the Committee Chair , Kathy Voss or any of the board members. At the show a few people indicated they would be interested in helping. It can be so hectic I may have misplaced names. Please feel free to contact me. I’ll try to find you a job. I hope everyone has had a good summer. In addition to the Hiwire Honeybees we put up a bluebird house this year. The New York State bird is the bluebird and there has been a big push for many years to put up houses in rural areas to help the population. I was very surprised to actually get a pair this year. I can watch them out the kitchen window with binoculars. Dinner is frequently late...or possibly burnt. I’m looking forward to the Montgomery shows. Sally Lowe President 9/20/2015

Judges Critique Bill Ashburn

It was a wonder opportunity to judge both the Veterans Sweeps and The futurity at the 70 th Wire Fox Terrier Club of the Central States.

Veteran Sweeps It was my pleasure to judge 3 very lovely wires. It was very difficult for me to choose but ultimately I went with the over 10 year old Bitch GCh Dalriada’s Peggy Sue who still moved with much grace.

Futurity As a breeder I really enjoyed judging what our breed’s future is. I was impressed by the overall soundness of the wires. One point that really struck me was that there was quite a bit of diversity in the style of wires shown, which in my opinion is a sign of a healthy gene pool. Overall I thought the quality was slightly better in the Bitches over the dogs. My Grand Futurity winner Random Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit was absolutely stunning.

Judges Critique Merle Taylor

What an honor to have been able to judge such a show. There are shows and there are specialties, but the Wire Fox Terrier Club of the Central States took the prize for the best. To see more than 1 or 2 or even a small major at a show today is so commonplace; to see the numbers and quality of the entry today emphasizes how important this show is for the Wire Fox Terrier and for its members and supporters. I don’t think I have ever judged such quality. I must admit that I thought the dog classes held better quality than the bitch classes, which, in my experience, usually doesn’t hold true. Don’t take it that the bitches weren’t good, they just weren’t as good as the dogs. The Bred By Exhibitor Dog class was probably the most impressive and most difficult to separate the placements. The breeders should be very proud. My first overall impressive saw most of the exhibits with the proper WFT shape, head proportions were fairly good. I, personally, would like to see equal portions, skull and foreface. Heads were generally clean; the muzzles were strong and powerful, which really impressed me. Most of the entries carried parallel planes and good eye shape , color, and placement. When this combination is not there, it does project a different expression. As usual, some ears were larger than others. It is those small features that sometimes separate class placements when it comes down to the “wire”. Generally speaking, not uncommon to any breed, the major areas for improvement fell to the front assembly—there are so many working parts, one can’t just aim the blame at one particular feature. I believe with a better shoulder layback and better upper arm length and placement, the front assembly would allow for correct movement and outline—and often shortening the back. In general, the toplines and tailsets were good. The strength of the rear appeared strong. There were a few too many cycle hocks. The condition of the coats was absolutely impressive; I so appreciate good harsh coats in impeccable condition. I compliment all of the exhibitors for their efforts. While judging a class, one doesn’t always get to stand back and admire what one has in front of him after awarding the placements; however, when, for the winners line up in dogs and bitches, I was pleased that my class winners gave me a similar look or consistency.

I felt my Winners Dog was everything I would want in a Wire Fox Terrier. He did everything right, was in impeccable condition and moved, in every direction, the way I feel a “cleverly made, shortbacked hunter” would perform. Something that I forgot to mention earlier, the prize awarded at Friday night’s gathering was a sketch of a “hunter” and a “wire”—every Wire Fox Terrier person should study that beautiful piece of art. I would have no problem with it being displayed in my house. The bitches were good; feminine versions of the breed. I love “girly” bitches . My winners bitch gave me what I wanted. My Reserve Winners was inching right in there, maturity will only make her better. My baby puppy was a delight, showing like she was having a great time; I liked her a lot. What a wonderful line up of specials. I thought the quality was incredibly deep, the breeders should be very proud to have produced such a crew. Again, I was not disappointed in the quality of the specials class. When I spoke about passion at the banquet, the quality of this group of specials nourishes that passion. I believe, as a judge, it’s not always exciting to award Selects and AOMs, but at this show, the quality was so deep, to give those awards was very gratifying. My BOB winner was a dog that had everything going for him. He was presented in beautiful condition, carried himself well on the move and standing still. Close behind was the Select Dog. My BOS and select bitch were eyecatchers from the beginning. My AOM’s were given with pleasure to dogs/bitches I felt had the quality in shape, movement, and condition that put them in the winning lineup. My Winners Dog walked to the BOS slot by outmoving my Winners Bitch, as I was told later, they were also littermates. Congratulations to everyone. I hope every winner appreciates those beautiful trophies, their history alone speaks highly of the quality that has gone before, not to be outdone in 2016. Again, thank you for allowing me this wonderful opportunity. Thanks, Altha, for your attention to detail, Carole, for your encouragement throughout, and Margie for your expertise in keeping the ring going. And, of course, all of the members who went out of their way to make me feel at home. Thank you.

Wire Fox Terrier of Central States Judge’s Critique Miss Rebecca S. J. Cross I fell in love with fox terriers when I was stationed in the Air Force in Japan more than 10 years ago. To learn show grooming, I would travel on weekends with Hiroshi Tsuyuki to Japanese Kennel Club shows. On occasion, Hiroshi allowed me to show Ch. Santeric Y 2 K of Kathrich, known as “Ricky”, bred by the one and only Ric Chashoudian and Kathi Reges. In showing Ricky, I immediately fell in love with wire(s). I’ve taken every opportunity since to learn about and show the breed. Imagine my surprise and excitement when I was asked to judge Puppy Sweepstakes at Central States, one of the most prestigious shows for the breed. I want to thank the club for this honor. A special thanks goes out to Altha Graham. She took good care of me – particularly because I had gallbladder surgery the week before the show. I also want to thank the breeders and exhibitors for showing to me. I had a wonderful group of youngsters to judge. It was a great honor. Before discussing the winners, I would like to give some general feedback. Overall everyone had their dogs in fantastic shape, and I know how hard it is to keep up on the trimming as it is an art form. Presentation and first impressions do carry a long way once you enter the ring and you all did well. I was impressed. Regarding movement, some exhibitors needed to slow down and not run with their dogs. The role of a handler is to show a dog to advantage. Several exhibitors for whatever reason ran with their dogs. At a slower pace, I could have seen their true movement better. In judging, I looked for several specific things. The Fox Terrier is a square breed, which is defined by a short back, long neck and long head, all which must be balanced. I found some of the youngsters to be a little longer in loin, low legged and over angulated in the rear. Shoulders were good in some, and fair in others and overall the rears were good with butt behind the tail and good tail sets. Coats were good, there were only a few that weren’t quite on top but I think with proper trimming and time they would be good. I also noticed a few that were slight in bone and lacking substance. Sure, we want long clean heads, but not so long and clean that they become pencil heads. We still need strength in the muzzle and fill under the eye. When it came to movement this is where I felt the puppies were the weakest. Many could make the picture, but when it came time to move, this was the true test of conformation. I noticed that we had very few pendulum fronts and this is well defined in the standard and this relates to correct shoulder placement. There were many that appeared to be riding a bicycle. I felt the pups were stronger in correct rear movement rather than their fronts but there were a few that could not parallel and that was matching up to the ones that were over angulated which would not allow for proper movement. In closing, my Best in Sweeps winner was a stand out from the moment he walked into the 12-18 month dog class. The first thing I noticed was he was square. He had an extremely short back and amount of leg under him kept the square profile. He also had a long neck and long head which completed his balance. With maturity I think this male has a lot to offer in the future. My Best of Opposite Bitch also came from the 12-18 month class and was also an eye catcher when she walked in. She was balanced and moved very freely front to rear. Each dog was worthy of winning that day and I thank both breeders and owners for showing. 14

Show Chair Report 2016 We have come a long way since my first show as show chair in 2012 at Sharonville. That venue was a blur of disorganization and I would rather forget it. But it was that year that we vetted several show sites and the committee and I moved the show to the Eukanuba Hall at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington, Ohio. Next, we expanded the show by the addition of Performance Events, first with a Match and Barn Hunt and now with Rally and Obedience Trials. What a great addition they have been. All the time we kept in mind that our Club’s original purpose was Conformation and we have truly kept our focus on that. This year was another year of learning and a lot of work for me putting together the M-BF, Inc. Premium List, and for Joyce Hanson doing the catalog. We may need to do some fine tuning and your suggestions are welcome, but from here on, I don’t see any major changes in our show. EXCEPT – the show is growing! Our entry of 64 dogs is well above the national average of 55 dogs for specialty shows and well above the 2015 Wire entry of 29 at Montgomery County. We have a total of 108 entries, not including Barn Hunt! We have booked more hotel rooms than ever before and have two overseas visitors. Our new Ric Chashoudian Best of Opposite challenge trophy is a great addition. For that we have to thank, Andy DiGiorgio, Judy Hunter for the statue on top, and Lynn Sobin-Comstock for putting it all together. I have to tell you that it is very hard to keep expenses in line with show income. We don’t have the large donor sponsors of a few years back, but Cara Campbell continues to sponsor refreshments for the Greet and Groom and we thank her for that. I anticipate that when we get the final accounting from MB-F, our expenses will be less than with Specialty Dog Shows. I have tried to cut back on some things and will have to wrestle with the Centre to keep price increases to a minimum. For each part of the show planned and executed by a committee, or by an individual, I say, “Thank you!” Next year’s show dates are May 11, 12, & 13, 2017. See you there! Altha

Our Versatile Wires... Bella and I are having great fun participating in scent work trials with the Performance Scent Dog organization. They are organized very similar to Nose Work. Bella earned titles in all 5 categories at the Novice Level this Summer so moved her up to the Advanced level. Early September she earned her first title at the Advanced level in the Speed category. Earlier that day she seemed a bit tired and it was the first time the thought crossed my mind that maybe it was becoming too much for her and retirement crossed my mind briefly. Well the two Speed classes were at the end of the day. In trial 1 she earned the Blue Ribbon finding the two hides in 30 seconds and in the very next trial in Speed she earned a 3rd place finding the hides in 32 seconds. That day she beat the top GSDs that normally dominate this sport. Bella and I have been together so long that we can read each other’s mind and I am sure she was reading my mind that day and said “retirement” no way! Actually in the picture it looks like she is laughing at me. Not bad for 15 years young. Since then she has titled in three categories at the Advanced level so we are now playing at the Excellent level. What a fun dog she is! Lucia Hackett & “Bella”

Dear Club Members, During the Saturday Board meeting there was a discussion suggesting that the Show Chairman be allowed to show dogs. It has been the policy in the past for the Show Chair not to be permitted to show his/her dogs. While it has been the policy over the years there is nothing in writing. After discussion the board made the decision to bring this question to the membership to vote on. Kathy will be sending a ballot with the Board and Judges ballots this spring. The votes will be tallied at the Show May 2017 and the result of the vote will be carried forward beginning with the Show May 2018. I am including information that has been part of the board’s discussion and I hope it will help you in making your decision. Kathy and I did some research to see what the AKC and the AFTC rules were. The AFTC does not address this question nor does the AKC. The AKC does state this. “Regarding the question of whether or not club officers or show officials and members of his/her households should exhibit at his/her club’s show, the AKC has no desire to legislate in this regard, but does expect clubs to seriously consider their own policies on the subject. The AKC recognizes that in some parts of the country there are few shows; consequently an exhibiting restriction placed on club officials is a hardship. However, a club should realize that exhibitors and spectators sometimes arrive at the wrong conclusion when a dog owned or handled by a club officer or show official, or by a member of such person's household, wins at its show. Therefore, clubs should consider an exhibiting restriction for its officers, show chairs, and members of the show committee, as well as for members of his/her households. In addition to club and show officials, clubs should also give consideration to placing a voluntary restriction on the exhibiting activities of the show photographer “ Reason against it: If we consider allowing the show chair to show or have his/her dog shown, there are a few things to consider when his/her dog is going to be shown. There will obviously need to be some contact between the Show Chair and the judges but up to what point? Especially when we are at the show we will need to be aware of how contact between the Chair and judges could be perceived. If the Chairman has a dog to show we will need to minimize contact. Reason for it : Concern that finding someone willing to be show chairman is more difficult if he/she is not allowed to have his/her dogs shown. The idea set forth would be that the show chairman’s puppy, class dog or special belonging to or bred by the Showchair could be shown to the judge(s) by another person. Sally Lowe Nov 27, 2016

From The Treasurer ~

November 15, 2016

This year, club expenses exceed income by $3,400. Almost half of this deficit can be attributed to the additional $1,500 in room rental fees the club incurred as we expanded the number of days we utilized the exhibit hall.

Show expenses are a little difficult to compare from 2015 to 2016 as we changed show superintendents. The costs of printing premium lists & catalogs and the purchase of ribbons & rosettes are now included in our superintendent fee. In addition, there were some costs for the 2015 show that were not received and paid until the 2015 – 2016 fiscal year. Year to year comparisons should become easier as our new superintendent clearly itemizes costs and the bill will be received the final day of the show.

Electronic delivery of the newsletter continues to save the club money. Barn Hunt and Obedience events once again showed profits and are popular events that have brought new members to the club. Trophy donations and silent auction/raffle proceeds are down slightly. I encourage each member to support these events with your participation and your donations as they help to ensure the success of our club.

President Sally Lowe has continued to keep the goal of fiscal responsibility in front of us. The club has supported changes over the last couple of years that have headed us in the right direction. Our show chair and committees are looking at additional ways to ensure our expenses do not exceed our income. I am confident that our annual show will remain THE event for wire fox terriers.

Thank you for allowing me the privilege to serve as your treasurer.

Regards,

Linda Albrecht, Treasurer
