This hike takes you up a steep, but beautifully forested, climb to three tiers of waterfalls. Start at the Hamilton Mountain Trailhead and climb up to Hardy Creek. You'll come to a side trail leading downhill to a viewpoint of the lowest tier, known as Hardy Falls. Next, after a short distance past Hardy Falls, you'll see a signed spur heading up to the left leading to Rodney Falls and Pool of the Winds. At Pool of the Winds, Hardy Creek is channeled into a funnel-like chamber in the cliff face. From the Pool of the Winds junction, the main trail switchbacks down to a bridge over Hardy Creek, just at the base of the middle falls of Rodney Falls.

Getting there: From the Bridge of the Gods, head west onto WA Hwy 14 and travel seven miles. Watch for Beacon Rock— it will tower in front of you as you approach the state park which is near mile marker 35. Turn right to the campground into the small trailhead parking lot. The Oregon Trail spanned over 2,100 miles, from Independence, Missouri to Oregon City, Oregon, taking families anywhere from 5 to 6 months to complete. The final leg of the Trail was known as the Barlow Road, built in 1846. This route, from The Dalles to Oregon City, was built after many families lost their lives and/ or livestock trying to make their way down the Columbia River. The Barlow Road was a better alternative, taking caravans around the southern side of Mt. Hood, and then out west to Oregon City. Today, you and your family can learn all about the pioneers and Native American families who travelled through and lived on this land in the 1800s. Start with a trip to the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum in The Dalles to learn about the Native American tribes of the area, the Lewis and Clark expedition, and what events lead to the Oregon Trail. Follow the Barlow Road south and take a trip back in time to visit the Dufur Living History museum that houses original pioneer equipment, artifacts, and buildings retrieved from nearly vanished towns.

This waterfall is well worth the hike! Not only do you see a spectacular waterfall but you also are hiking in a beautiful old growth forest. Start the hike by crossing the cable suspension bridge which spans a rock gorge providing spectacular views of the white water of Falls Creek. The trail ends at the waterfall so this is an out and back hike. Note: Trailhead is closed December 1 to March 31.
The trail to the top of Hamilton Mountain is a gradual climb offering spectacular views of the Columbia River and Bonneville Dam from the top. The first part of the hike is very popular with the first 1.3 miles taking you to Rodney Falls, Pool of the Winds and Hardy Falls.

Finally, don’t miss a visit to Philip Foster Farm, out near Estacada, where your family can build log cabins, see a working blacksmith, and grind corn just like the pioneering Foster family did 175 years ago. 2019/20 COLUMBIA GORGE TO MT. HOOD // OREGON & WASHINGTON’S PLAYGROUND
This hike features gorgeous views, rocky crags, streams and two waterfalls. The full trail loop provides fantastic views of the Columbia River Gorge, an intimate look at Cape Horn Falls and a challenging workout as it climbs and descends the rocky slopes of Cape Horn. Note: The lower trail is closed from February 1st to July 15th to protect peregrine falcon nesting areas. Parts of the trail are narrow, which can be unsafe during heavy snow and ice conditions. Getting there: Follow State Hwy 14 west from Stevenson about 18 miles, pass Beacon Rock State Park, continue to the intersection with Salmon Falls Road, near MP 26. Turn right on Salmon Falls Road, parking area is on your right. Note: No pass required

The mighty Bonneville Dam is a must-see attraction
BONNEVILLE DAM FACTS
Located in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Bonneville Lock and Dam spans the Columbia River and links the two states of Washington and Oregon. This Great Depression era Public Works Project serves three purposes. It raised the water level over the Cascades Rapids to improve river navigation. It generates clean, renewable hydropower, and it put thousands of people to work during the Depression. Visitors can experience first-hand the operation of two hydroelectric powerhouses and watch migrating fish traveling upstream at the underwater viewing rooms next to the fish ladders.
• The locks at Bonneville Dam are part of a 465-mile inland waterway
The Washington Shore Visitors Center offers one of the world’s most accessible views of a powerhouse. Inside, generators can be seen from a walkway 85 feet above the powerhouse floor. Park ranger staff and volunteers can guide you, answer questions, and provide a variety of programs throughout the year. Fish viewing windows offer a chance to watch Coho, Sockeye and Chinook salmon, along with steelhead, shad, lamprey and other fish, as they head upstream each spring, summer and fall. Looking for an outside activity? Walk the one mile-long Fort Cascades Self-Guided Historic Trail.

The Columbia River Gorge, at 80 miles long, is famous for its ideal wind conditions for all types of water sports. Sailors are drawn to the area from all over the world. The Columbia River is wide and flat with a moderate current and consistent wind conditions. The portion of the river between Cascade Locks, Oregon and Stevenson, Washington is considered to support the most ideal conditions for sailing. Water access is available on both sides of the river. Launching in the Columbia River can be performed at many spots including Marine Park in Cascade Locks and East Point in Stevenson.

The Bradford Island Visitors Center, located on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, is a five-level facility, offering amazing underwater views of migrating fish, a large theater and displays that offer insights into the history and workings of a hydropower plant. The adjacent Bonneville Fish Hatchery has informative displays and ponds filled with rainbow trout and a half-dozen massive white sturgeon. Sturgeon still spawn in the area below the dam and the lower Columbia River supports a healthy sturgeon population. Bonneville Lock and Dam was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark.

Kiteboarding is one of the most interesting spectator sports since chariot races and Stevenson is home to one of the most popular kiteboarding spots in the Gorge. Watch the kiteboarders launch 20, 30, 40 feet into the air at Stevenson’s Kite Beach on the east end of town.

The Gorge is the windsurfing capital of the world. Did you know you will find the most famous windsurfing site, plus several other user friendly launches in Skamania County? The most famous site, at Spring Creek Fish Hatchery, known to “boardheads” as The Hatch, is on Highway 14, four miles west of the Hood River Bridge. In Stevenson, Bob’s Beach is the home for windsurfing.

LOCATION: Skamania County spans a distance of 1,672 square miles on the north shore of the Columbia River in the southwestern part of Washington state. The Gifford Pinchot National Forest covers more than 80% of the county. Skamania County also contains portions of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and is bisected north and south by the Cascade Mountain Range. The major driving route is State Highway 14, which leads east from the metropolitan area of Vancouver, Washington or Interstate 84 from Portland, Oregon. Both cities can be reached in less than one hour’s drive from Stevenson, Washington, allowing county residents access to the best of both urban and rural lifestyles.
CLIMATE: Skamania County enjoys a mild but variable climate with rainfall and temperatures growing drier and warmer as you travel from west to east.
