LASO: Keeping in mind the civic role and social implications of a legal aid office, the material selections tended to be affordable and sustainable without rejecting comfort. Selected materials were conservative, helping to achieve a professional atmosphere.
SHEDD FFE
THE SHEDD INSTITUTE
THE SHEDD INSTITUTE: Music is a way of expressing oneself. The material selections for this organization were more contemporary and risky, and were chosen to express the fun and freedom of music. Whimsical fabrics, bright colors and dynamic textures were incorporated to create a lively and visually interesting space.

ECO-FASHION ACADEMY
TERM: Fall-Spring 2008, IARC 488: Comprehensive Studio PROJECT: The Ecofashion Academy of Portland (EFA) is a small, specialized college for sustainable fashion learning. The college provides undergraduate programs for sixty selected students. Formed in response to the recent Ecofashion Movement, EFA will focus on the intense study of environmentally sensitive materials and responsible production techniques. Students will be encouraged to create unique and artful pieces that push the boundaries of Ecofashion. An affiliated retail outlet, “No Preservatives,” will function to educate the public about the schools philosophies of fashion. In addition, it will not only display professional Ecofashion designers’ collections, but also provide opportunities for students to sell and exhibit their creations. Fashion shows and other events will be housed in an exhibition space serving as another means of public interaction. When the exhibition space is not being used for events, it will function as an informal presentation area in which students can rehearse shows and critique one another’s work. Other major programmatic elements include: design studios, technical labs, fashion and textile library and student common space.
site
DESIGN GOALS: • Reinforce Eco Fashion’s Academy’s message of sustainability by using fashion academy the building to educate the public. Execute this goal by incorporating a public realm in the school to facilitate community interaction and fashion academy awareness. Use responsible and environmental friendly materials throughout the design. • Clothing can be manipulated to respond to the body’s needs. It can be layered, zipped, unzipped, tightened, loosened, etc. This project aims to translate the versatility and adaptability of clothing architecturally by creating spaces that allow manipulation by the user, to change and respond to students needs.
