Keys to Communicating Better as a Leader by Ann Marie Heiser | Jan 19, 2022 | Ann Marie Heiser, leadership, management

In leadership, communication is the key to managing people effectively. Successful leadership depends on how leaders perform their communication skills. With good communication skills, they can communicate with different people, from senior employees, since they influence and execute the company’s affairs to junior employees, to create a loyal and productive working team. The following are keys to develop good communication skills as a leader. Joining Available Dialogues Leaders need to be open to dialogues with their colleagues and spend more time dealing with their different personalities. To avoid getting influenced, they should keep off emotions but keep their composure. They can keep eye contact with them and don’t avoid confrontation. For an open dialogue, they should be empathic and understand how their co-workers live, their needs, challenges, and values. Leadership experience is essential, and besides, a leader’s feedback and opinion are critical in communication between them and their co-workers. However, they should ask for feedback from their employees to get guidance and what they need, their strategies, and goals. Attentive Listening Though a leader that speaks well is a better influencer, being a good listener is more advantageous. According to the Journal of Research in Personality, Attentive listeners get more information from people, building trust and interpersonal relationships. Review Situations Keenly Conflict is common in workplaces as not everything seems to be what it is. Leaders should always consider hearing all sides. And when in doubt, they should avoid opinions and take time to reflect on the situation. Be Careful with Verbal and Body Language Leaders should be keen with their choice of words and ensure their arguments are clear, be flexible and respect their listeners. The body also transmits many languages like gestures, voice tone, and eye contact. Therefore, they should adopt relaxed postures when communicating to show they are accessible. Pass On Credibility and Trust All communications addressed above convey credibility and trust. However, more is needed from leaders as per how they work and make decisions to build their reputation. What they say should maintain the attitude of integrity. For better results, they must treat all professionals with respect and contribute to their success positively. When leaders fail in their communication, their careers and ability to deal with people get compromised.
