Maddie and her little big sister Written and illustrated by: Ann Megg Arbotante
One day while Maddie was playing in the living room, she heard her father calling her name “Maddie, Maddie! 4
“Oh Maddie I have good
news for you, we have a new
member of the family and she’s a bouncing baby girl” and then Maddie replied “hhmmmm…. a bouncing baby sister? ”
5
Later that afternoon Maddie paid her playmate Sam a visit. While playing Maddie asked a question. “Do you like babies? And then Sam frowned.
6
“Oh babies? I know a lot about babies because I have a baby sister too.” Sam took a deep breath and then continued,
“Babies are smelly all the time.”
7
“And they cry without a reason and I find it really annoying and very noisy.” Sam said.
Maddie’s face then looked puzzled and she was worried that her sister would be like what Sam was describing.
8
Then Sam continued to tell
Maddie about babies, “That’s not all Maddie, babies are big and heavy! I tried to carry my baby sister
and oh boy she was heavy!” Then Maddie replied “Oh really?”
9
"Yes Maddie! So don't go near them! And they also take your parents' attention, so you better be careful." Sam explained to Maddie.
10
After her playtime with Sam,
Maddie went home thinking about what Sam had told her.
11
Later that night Maddie was so bothered about babies that she had a nightmare.

14
Maddie woke up from her nightmare and called her father. He then asked her “ Maddie what’s wrong?” And she replied
“Daddy I had a dream about my baby sister. She scared me!”
15
“Don’t be scared Maddie, that was only a dream”, he said to
her. “Go back to sleep and tomorrow’s going to be alright.” She hugged her father and went back to sleep.
16
The following day Maddie’s parents
came home, and they called Maddie. “Come here Maddie I want you to meet your little sister.”
17
Maddie was afraid to see her baby
sister so she hid at the back of their couch.
18
Then her mother called her, so Maddie went near but she was still afraid to see her sister so she covered her eyes.
19
“Maddie don’t be afraid, I want you to meet your
little sister, Lily.” Her mother said. Maddie uncovered
her eyes and saw a tiny baby sleeping soundly in her mother’s arms.
20
Maddie realized that everything she imagined was wrong. She smiled and was very happy to welcome Lily into their family. She hugged her mother and said “Welcome back Mum. I miss you.
21
Maddie kissed Lily and whispered into Lily’s ears “Welcome home my little big sister.”
