SPICE ALL-STARS
Appearance Guide and Tutorial for the 2014 SPiCE All-Stars Competitions
Hair and Makeup
Step 1: Gather your supplies. We recommend…. -
Your team bow A brush for detangling and making the ponytail A dedicated teasing brush or comb Dry shampoo if you need to add thickness or texture Or a volumizing powder for thickness and texture Bobby pins to match your hair color Clear elastics or black rubber bands A good quality, extra hold hairspray that dries quickly A bun donut for bun teams
Step 2- If you have never tried this hairstyle before we highly recommend practicing it before competition day. This Cheer poof pony may work best on second day hair. If you have thin or slippery hair, blast the roots with Dry Shampoo to give your hair some texture and hold. Brush it through for even distribution. Begin by sectioning off the bangs section of hair in a U shape. The width should be roughly with the peaks of the eyebrows. Pull the remaining hair back into a loose ponytail just to get it out of the way while you work on “The Poof”
Those with very long or thick hair may want to section off the front and braid the back of the hair up into a ponytail before beginning the poof.
Step 3 – Take thin sections of the poof area and quickly spray with your extra hold hairspray the lower half of the section. Do not saturate the hair, a quick spray of a quality product should do.
Step 4 – Use your teasing brush/ comb and begin teasing and back combing the section to help form a base for a lasting poof. After you have teased all four sides of the section lay it towards the back and begin working on the next section and work your way through to the beginning of the hairline. Small sections work best.
Step 5 – The interior of the poof should feel solid with a nest like consistency. After the poof has been teased enough to form a large enough base to support the poof smooth down the outer layers, and spray with hairspray. Then secure a clear elastic about 4-6 inches above the scalp gathering the poof section. Then lay the elastic down on the top of the head and push forward to make the poof. Secure the poof in position with a bobby pin through the elastic towards the hairline and secure the poof to the top of the head with crisscrossed bobby pins directly behind the elastic. Spray with hairspray and smooth flyaway’s. Poof should be well shaped, centered, tall, secure and lasting.
Step 6 – Now that the poof is secured, begin forming the ponytail with the tail of the poof included. The ponytail should sit at the top of the head, level with the ears. Smooth out any bumps that may occur and use bobby pins to secure any loose pieces. We recommend making a “Crown” of bobby pins mid-way up to the ponytail to secure all of the loose hair to slick and neat style. You may need to double your elastics to ensure a lasting style.
Step 7 – Use bobby pins and hairspray for a slick appearance on the sides and the back. The sides should be smooth and tight. No pulled out pieces, wisps or face framing tendrils.
Step 8 – Add your team bow. Bow should be presented high and facing to the front. Think Minnie Mouse style. You can secure the bow with bobby pins concealed behind the poof.
Step 9 – Tease the ponytail in a similar fashion as the poof as individually sprayed sections and teased to give height, width and dimension. Smooth out the top layer, push it up and spray again. Tips: -
Teasing brushes and combs can be found on drugstore hair care aisles and at Sally’s for $2.00 -$6.00 Suave makes a great inexpensive dry shampoo and several brands can be found at Sally’s $2.49-$8.00 Make sure your hairspray is an extra hold, non-flaking brand. Great salon quality sprays can be found at TJ Maxx, CVS, Sally’s etc. Make sure you are spraying far enough away to not saturate the hair Bobby pins work best when used with the wavy side facing down. You can flat iron the hair prior to styling to give a smoother appearance You can check YouTube for “cheer hair” or “cheer poof” for additional guidance until the SPiCE video is ready!
Additional Examples of All-Star Cheer Poof Pony’s
For Teams that require a bun instead of a ponytail. Follow the previous steps through Step 8. There are many ways to make a bun but using a “bun donut” may be the easiest. They can be found at TJ Maxx, Sallys, Wal-Mart and CVS. Step 9 for Buns – Slide the donut down the length of the tail and fan out the hair around the donut to conceal it. Wrap an elastic over the bun donut and secure at the base. Tuck in the remaining excess hair around the base and secure with bobby pins. Smooth and spray
The SPiCE makeup bag includes your eye and lip look but there are additions that need to be made to complete the look. The specific brands and tools used in this guide are not required but are used to demonstrate how to get to the final completed look. Recommendations: • • • • • • • • • • • •
A makeup primer - perfects the appearance of skin and prolongs the wear of foundation. An eye shadow primer for true color and long wear A complimentary toned base/ foundation and a brush or sponges for smoothing and blending A concealer to cover and even tone A bronzer to give contour and definition A powder for setting the look A highlighter for cheek and brow bones A subtle blush to give rosiness but not overpower the face since the eye and lip looks are already strong Eyelash curler and long wearing mascara A finishing powder Eyebrow powder or pencil for filling and darkening A makeup setting spray
The final make up look should appear glamorous and complete. This may feel heavy handed but it is necessary for performance and to not look washed out under the harsh lighting. If you are not used to applying and/or your child is not used to wearing a full face of performance makeup, we highly recommend that you have a few practice sessions before competition morning.
Gather your selected products and apply as necessary. Start preparing the face with a primer, foundation and concealer. Be sure to smooth out any lines on the jawline. Then, if available, move on to eye primer and face bronzer and highlighter. Finally blush and set the face with powder.
Tip: the brand www.eyeslipsface.com has primers, brushes, powder and concealer for $1.00 and blush, bronzer and highlighter for $2.00, Mascara, glitter applicators, fall out shields, setting spray and eyebrow powder for $3.00
For the eyes use the SPiCE colors provided in the kit. 1 – Use the small angled brush and make a palette on your hand of the green shadow to warm the product and coat the brush without clumps. 2 – Outline the eyelid with the green shadow, getting as close to the eye lash line and the natural curve of the eye as possible. Once the borders have been established fill in the outline with the remaining shadow. 3 – There are many ways to apply the glitter layer and a recommended way is to dip a sponge into the cap of the glitter powder and get a small amount at a time and dab over the lid as brushing it on loosely may cause too much uncontrolled fall out. Fall out can also be managed with a tissue held under the eye during application of the glitter and black eye shadows. 4 – First apply the black shadow with a light hand as it is easier to build up color than to have to tone down excess. Aim to at first, contour the eye and then smoke it out to the edges. 5 – Next, fill in and groom eyebrows as necessary. 6 – Apply the supplied black eyeliner and wing out to the outer corners of the eye. 7 – Once the eyeliner is dry curl the lashes and apply a lasting mascara. 8 – Pat the lips dry and apply the kit supplied SPiCE lipstick color, allow to dry and top with gloss. 9 – If available set the look with a makeup setting spray.
Tip: Completed eye looks are on the final page
