Cover Letter: Sub : Application for the role of an Urban Designer role Dear Madam/ Sir, I am currently working as an Urban Designer at JTP after gaining 2.5 years of experience from Mcbains, a London based firm, post my Masters in Housing and Urbanism at the AA School of Architecture. I currently work on large scale housing projects with experience in delivering Outline Planning Application drawings, designing access statements and presenting concepts and design narratives. I have been able to develop expertise in 3D modelling and presentation through working on various diverse projects. JTP has enabled me to work in a collaborative environment and take responsibility for various stages of design projects from a very early phase in my career. I am a registered architect at the Council of Architecture (COA), India. During my time in India, I could work at the renowned firm Stapati, winner of six awards in ‘IIA State Awards for excellence in Architecture. In my one year work experience, I was involved in every stage of design and construction including, conceptual, schematic, design development and construction documentation. I was privileged to be an active member of NASA (National Association of Students of Architecture), a platform for students to participate in architecture design competitions and interact with their peers from around the

country. Being a part of it has helped me embrace the importance of teamwork and communication. I have participated in various types of projects, interior, housing, workspaces, resorts - with a speciality in hospitality projects. I believe, my core skills are concept development, detailing, structure study, architecture design and site planning. I have been able to add valuable perspective on different urban contexts of architecture and planning from various projects undertaken during my masters. This complements the strong fundamental architectural training and expertise in various design tools I have acquired during my past professional experience. Along with being proficient in relevant software like Revit BIM, AUTOCAD etc. I believe I posses strong communication skills to be able to present my ideas and thought clearly and concisely. I have always believed in design that result from research and reasoning, respecting the context and addressing their needs. I am eager to progress my career and enhance my passion for design by pursuing a role at your firm and gain valuable exposure to the current industry trends. I am confident that my skills sets and love for drawings and design can be put to a beneficial use for your firm.

A key feature of the layout is the design of the frontage to the site access and new Tewkesbury roundabout. This forms an important area that sets the tone for the quality and aspiration of the forthcoming phase of development. Thus a landmark building was designed by grouping 1 and 2 bed flats for the benefit of streetscene at the location requiring a good level of definition. The landmark building adds significant scale and massing.

Other Projects The images show the projects I was involved in while working at Mcbains. My current job experience is a dictation of my growing skills in urban design, where I’m involved in planning of communities and housing societies all around the UK. This has been a great learning experience in understanding planning policies and control legislation and catering that into design.

Redefining Density: A strategy for sustainable neighbourhood planning Neighborhoods were often thought of as areas that include residential functions with certain civic components. Economic generators were pushed to the urban periphery as they were considered less important than civic integrators. Hence, this stereotypical image of neighborhood might be summed up as one that was designed to promote sociability between people. As we move from a service based economy to a knowledge based economy crossovers are seen between spaces of residence, business and education. Tutors: Hugo Hinsley, Elad Eisenstein, Naiara Vergara

http://www.aaschool.ac.uk/

The available land in Central London can be used more efficiently not only by intensifying it but also inserting an urban quality trying to get the right mix helping the economy of London.

Housing

The traditional layout of the neighborhood does not accommodate this mix and hence a new concept needs to be developed that facilitates the creation of multifunctional environments that have the capacity to support and enhance these crossovers. The thesis work tries to address the question of to what extent the planning of a different typological cluster can form this new neighborhood model in a contained space, and understanding what can be shared with housing, and creating a diverse environment providing a neutral territory promoting integration and attractive to talented people.

The available land in Central London can be used more efficiently not only by intensifying it but also inserting an urban quality trying to get the right mix helping the economy of London.

Concept for Student Housing

The thesis aims to transform an inner city area into a neighbourhood which is willing to initiate an open and social urbanity as opposed to the exclusive traditional neighbourhood, giving it a spatial characteristic by intensifying the area, providing mixed use functions and inserting a series of spaces for interaction for both outsiders ads well as residents.

Knowledge Quarter : Design response to trends and challeges

This work was produced in a design workshop that was undertaken by 9 students of the AA School of Architecture’s Housing and Urbanism program. The project dealt with creating a Knowledge Environment. In the recent trends the nature of culture is changing. Museums and theatres are focusing less on the importance of the permanent or private collection and more upon educational outreach and ways to interact and engage public through shared spaces. The project was tested in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic park site and the competition brief as a part of the Olympic Legacy Plan specifies the mixture of UAL, V&A, Saddler’s Wells and the fourth unidentified institution, which is currently speculated to be the Smithsonian Institute.

http://www.aaschool.ac.uk/

The approach revolves around formation of nodes of varied volumes containing specific activities while enabling crossovers between them through connecting bridges and open spaces to achieve enhanced quality spaces.

Tutors: Lawernce Barth, Anna Shapiro Group Members: Eanadon Vargas, Goutham Nijalingappa, Olga Konyukova, Fengxu Guo, Ariel Westmark, Bingjun Xu, Ashwin Bungarnayak, Satyaadeep Sonar, Annu Boban

Building the networks: Recife Workshop This project is the result of an academic collaboration between the Housing & Urbanism Programme (H&U) at the Architectural Association Graduate School and the Departament of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Pernambuco. This collaboration was organised as a ten-day intensive international design workshop in the city of Recife and focused on the place of design and spatial reasoning in addressing the challenges faced by the Brazilian national housing programme, entitled “Minha Casa, Minha Vida (My House, My Life). In particular, it aimed at reflecting on appropriate spatial approaches to the articulation of the inexorable link of housing and the production of the city in the provision of affordable housing for people in need.

Adding towers opens up views to beach and the lagoon. Different types begin to accommodate a greater social and economic mix within the site, creating new opportunities for future collaborations.

Linear blocks are optimized to increase natural shading and ventilation solutions.

New types allow for greater permeability through PMCMV sites. Instead of isolated compounds, the area becomes integrated into one urban fabric, establishing new hierarchies of mobility and public space.
