YOUR SCHOOL AS A BOOK 2

You know what your school looks like.

The children: individuals from the

most in need to the brightest buttons. The friendship groups: gaggles, squads and mates, the classes and years, each with group characteristics marking them out.

Then there’s the staff: reliable

colleagues, valued educators and mentors, sources of inspiration for future greatness, or maybe just coping well in the face of yet another outbreak of nits.

The classrooms: decorated with

the palette of learning, imagined animals daubed, numbers mostly adding up, words writ large and small, right and wrong.

And outdoor spaces: the scenes of

great dramas and hilarity, the foundry of lifelong friendships.

All these things you know and see,

we photograph and design to make a lovely prospectus so that others can also marvel at the wonder of your visions.

WE ARE ONE ANOTHER 6

A creative firm established in 2001 by Paul and Julia Hamilton, OneAnother provides high-quality creative services - design and photography - to organisations and good causes. Your school is a good cause and we believe it deserves excellent creativity, far more than any business or corporation.

Paul, our Designer, also teaches

design and manages projects. Julia, our Photographer was - most usefully - previously a teacher. Their skills overlap when creating prospectuses for schools in south London where they live and work.

OneAnother is more than just a nice

name for a family business, it’s about our way of seeing the world, that through our creative collaborations with clients - with schools - we play a role in improving how people feel about their schools and their community.

TESTIMONIALS: DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT “ We have worked with OneAnother since 2013 to produce an annual school prospectus and I can recommend them without hesitation. We wanted to move beyond the soft focus photos of children staring into space that we had seen in many school prospectuses, to use photos of children undertaking real tasks across the curriculum in a way that reflects the school ethos and the experience of learning. Julia came into school and took excellent photos of teaching and learning, and the resulting prospectus has helped us to celebrate and reflect upon our values and our curriculum. It is both a celebration of, and introduction to, the school.” CRAIG VOLLER, HEAD TEACHER GOODRICH COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL, EAST DULWICH 10

“ We were delighted with the prospectus Paul and Julia created. They really listened to what we wanted and captured the unique elements of our school in their design and pictures. We have had so much positive feedback about the prospectus and we feel that it has helped to share with the wider community what our school has to offer - our first choice applications this year were double what they were two years ago.” ANDREW CHAPLIN, HEAD TEACHER WALNUT TREE WALK SCHOOL, KENNINGTON

" I’ve worked with OneAnother at two schools and they have produced a number of outstanding prospectuses for me. They are reasonably priced, thorough and supportive in their approach and have fully incorporated my wishes, whilst using their creative flair. The result has been the production of a number of well designed pieces containing excellent photography that fully capture the ethos and essence of my schools." SOLA INGRAM, HEAD TEACHER ST MARK’S COFE PRIMARY SCHOOL, OVAL 11

CELEBRATE YOUR FULL CLASSES 14

In this financially challenging era for schools, ensuring that incoming reception numbers are what they need to be necessitates cost-effective methods of assuring enough first-choice applications. The prospectuses we create are a highly effective method of doing that. As Andrew, the Head of Walnut Tree Walk said“…our first choice applications this year were double what they were two years ago.”

Our prospectuses are also a

charming, tried-and-tested way of sharing and celebrating achievements, diversity and the learning experiences and environments of schools. These books are an opportunity for everyone involved: parents, staff and the local community, to feel good about the school which they care for.

OUR PROCESS AND YOU 18

Our collaborative way of working starts with us working together to establish the school’s needs, wants and expectations.

Over the following weeks

Julia photographs in school, compiling a set of images which includes EFYS, outdoor learning, school councils and PTA events as well as all the subjects in the curriculum and any other aspects of the school identified as being of special interest.

Concurrently Paul creates a flat-

plan so that you can see and input on what goes where in the book. Page layouts, colour palettes and fonts follow, presented as design options early in the project for review and input to ensure that the finished printed prospectus looks exactly how the school wants.

LITTLE DEVILS we master 22

Our creative process is detail-focused, which is vital to making our beautiful prospectuses. A few of the ‘devils’ in our details:

Cost… we present and agree costs before any work is done and structure them to avoid the need for schools to offer these projects for tender.

Size… we create prospectuses with nonstandard page sizes and never A4 because our books are special and A4 is not.

Paper… we only use high-quality, sustainable and recycled papers which feel good to touch and which display colour beautifully.

Printing… we work with award winning printers to ensure that the prospectus not only looks good but is tangibly well made.

PHOTOS: INSIGHT WITH WONDER 26

Julia photographs every kind of class and in-school activity across all years to create a comprehensive set of photos.

Her reportage style of un-posed

photography suits the school setting. Capturing images of busy classrooms and playgrounds using gentle, natural light is a signature of our prospectuses; they are genuine, not the posed and false looking images found in many school brochures.

Not all subjects lend themselves

to photography so Julia can guide staff and children to shape situations that result in great photos no matter what the topic.

After the prospectus is completed

the school owns the photos. That means you can use them where you like and as often as you like without any extra cost.

DESIGN: EXPLAIN WITH FEELING 30

Early in the process we’ll have a conversation about what makes your school unique and about how best to marry your ideas with what we know about designing books.

If your school already has branding

we can work with that or we can design a look which is bespoke: colours, layout, fonts and a paper type and page size combined to best communicate your school.

The layout of the prospectus is

presented for your input and with that acted upon, the final design is perfected and applied to the entire prospectus.

When all the pages have been

designed; photo edits perfected, photos colour-corrected and text proof-read and amended, we send the book to our printer and week later you get your prospectus.

HOW OUR PROSPECTUSES WORK…

FRONT COVERS: BIG PICTURE SCENE SETTING

36

Whether a dramatic, panoramic scene or an intimate moment of learning, the first impression we make upon the reader is key. Portraying the school in a pleasing and inventive way transforms it from the everyday to special, a place of learning to be admired.

37

OPENING PAGES: A GUIDE TO YOUR SCHOOL

38

We always plan a prospectus by imagining it being looked at by parents of prospective pupils, who may have little or no knowledge of the school.

To help orientate them, and everyone else, the

opening pages display all the information to do with what makes a school tick, aside from the curriculum.

39

CURRICULUM: THE HARDWORKING PAGES 4

5

1

40

Curriculum pages are brought to life with sets of photos displaying educational traits and qualities across year groups. These are: 1 independent study, 2 positive teacher and pupil interaction, 3 group study, 4 examples of excellent work, 5 text to explain the subject and how the school is teaching it.

DOUBLE PAGE PHOTOS: BEAUTIFUL VISUAL PUNCTUATION

42

In amongst all the essential school information we make space for the reader to pause and wallow in the wonder, intensity and joy of school life by filling double page spreads with large photos - just as we have in this book.

We do this because we think it’s good sometimes

just to see the children doing their thing, large.

43

Most parents have a working knowledge of their children’s school but may have scant understanding of what it feels like to be a pupil in that school.

For parents of prospective

pupils that lack of understanding can be acutely felt. They make the decision of where to send their child based on a mix of open evenings, hearsay and the school website.

Whilst these all play a role in

making this important decision, a well produced prospectus can do something that none of those can: help parents feel like they’ve been into a school on a normal school day and actually seen what a classroom looks like in use whilst witnessing how your teachers interact with pupils.

These prospectuses, with their

candour, are in effect educating parents about the unique life of the school and what that will mean for their child.
