Dear Parishioners,

"My sheep hear my voice...and they follow me." JN 10:27 We live in a culture that has so many wonderful advancements in technology. I was given an IPod as a gift and I love it. It is so convenient to put the head set in and listen to my favorite music wherever I am. It became a great asset when I went away last year with my classmates. All my music fits in this small little "gadget", how great is that? I was also able to download my Breviary (the book of prayers and readings a priest must say at certain times of the day). As I looked around the plane I noticed that many people also had head sets in their ears. They were connected to a variety of games/music/movies and other devices that were occupying their time. It certainly helped make the flight go faster. With any wonderful advancement there also comes concerns. I wonder at times if we can become so accustomed to shutting ourselves away or filling our time with "noise" that it can effect our ability to be comfortable in silence. Of course there are times when such activities are necessary and useful. The caution should be that we don't become so dependent on them that we fill any and all down time with nose. As people of faith we need that time alone with Jesus. The Scripture reminds us that Jesus is our Shepherd and His sheep (us) hear His voice. To know Jesus we have to become accustomed to moments of silence. It is only in silence that we can hear and listen to the voice of Jesus. He wants to speak to us, show us the way but it takes an ability to find that quiet place to allow the voice to resonant within us. In these prayer moments wrapped in silence that the Holy Spirit opens the eyes and ears of our hearts. People often come to me wondering why their prayer life is dry and doesn't seem to bear fruit. Sometimes I notice that prayer is just filling up our time with words, either written in a book or even our petitions to the Lord. While asking Jesus for the needs of our hearts is certainly beneficial and printed prayers can be an aid to deeper prayer, our spiritual life must contain that silent time. The fruit of prayer comes more alive when we allow Jesus to speak His song of love. This can only truly become our reality when we become comfortable in silence. Spending time with our personal music/games/movies can be enjoyable and relaxing, certainly but I urge/encourage you to spend quiet time with Jesus. Mediate on Sacred Scripture and allow the Good Shepherd to speak and then you will "hear His voice and follow him more closely." Last Saturday Night we had our very successful "Mardi Gras." The almost 200 people who attended had a wonderful and enjoyable evening. I am very grateful to the committee who worked so hard planning the evening. As you may remember this was scheduled in February before Lent began but a snow storm forced us to cancel and then reschedule the date. I would like to thank Elena Villafane, our chairperson and her committee for all their hard work and dedication Joann Altman, Maureen Angliss, Natalie DeFeo, Donna Calamis, Linda Chebuske, Jody Fleishman, Michele Hagen, Maryellen Kerr, Eileen Krieb and Dino Marra. The fantastic raffle baskets were organized by Melinda Toner. A special thank you to Joan and Bill Schiller for being the cashiers for the evening. Yours in our Risen Lord, Fr. Bob
