HE DESCENDED INTO HELL

One of the responsibilities of priests and deacons is to pray The Liturgy of the Hours. These prayers are composed primarily of Psalms and Scripture readings from both the Old and New Testament. Some of the readings, however, are non‐Scriptural. The prayers are said at different hours during the day. Morning, Evening and Night Prayer are a few examples, and in praying at these designated times we accomplish two things. We sanctify time and we ful ill Jesus’ command to pray always! One of my favorite readings from the Liturgy of the Hours is taken from the Of ice of Readings for Holy Saturday, and its title is: From an ancient homily on Holy Saturday. The author is unknown. It is a beautiful reading about Christ’s descent into hell, or as known by another name, His descent to the dead. It is NOT to be confused with what most of us think about when we hear the word Hell, the total and complete separation of God for all eternity. This reading is illed with vivid imagery, and can serve as good meditation on the Easter Mystery which we continue to celebrate for the next 7 weeks. I am including a copy of this mediation in my bulletin article for your re lection and prayer life. I hope you get as much out of it as I do. Something strange is happening‐there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the lesh and He has raised up all who have slept since the world began! God has died in the lesh, and hell trembles with fear! He has gone to search for our irst parent, as for a lost sheep! Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and the shadow of death, He has gone to free from sorrow the captives Adam and Eve, He who is both God and the son of Eve. The Lord approached them bearing the cross, the weapon that had won him the victory. At the sight of Him, Adam, the irst man He had created, struck his breast in terror and cried out to everyone “My Lord be with you all!” Christ answered him, “And with your spirit.” He took him by the hand and raised him up saying “Awake, O Sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you His light.” I am your God, who for your sake became your son. Out of love for you and your descendants, I now by my own authority command all who are held in bondage to come forth, all who are in darkness to

be enlightened, all who are sleeping to arise. I order you O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be a prisoner in hell. Rise from the dead; for I am the life of the dead. Rise up, work of my hands, you who were created in my image. Rise, let us leave this place, for you are in me and I am in you; together we form only one person and cannot be separated. For your sake, I your God became your son; I the Lord took the form of a slave; I whose home is above the heavens, descended to the earth and beneath the earth. For your sake, for the sake of man, I became like a man without help, free among the dead. For the sake of you who left a garden, I was betrayed to the Jews in a garden, and I was cruci ied in a garden. See on my face the spittle I received in order to restore you to the life I once breathed into you. See there the marks of the blows I received in order to refashion your warped nature in my image. On my back see the marks of the scourging I endured to remove the burden of sin that weighs upon your back. See my hands nailed irmly to a tree, for you who once wickedly stretched out your hand to a tree. I slept on the cross and a sword pierced my side for you who slept in paradise and brought forth Eve from your side. My side has healed the pain in yours. My sleep will rouse you from your sleep in hell. The sword that pierced me has sheathed the sword that was turned against you. Rise, let us leave this place. The enemy led you out of the earthly paradise. I will not restore you to that paradise, but I will enthrone you in heaven. I forbade you the tree that was only a symbol of life, but see, I who am life itself am now one with you. I appointed cherubim to guard you as slaves are guarded, but now I make them worship you as God! The throne formed by the cherubim awaits you; its bearers swift and eager. The bridal chamber is adorned; the banquet is ready; the eternal dwelling places are prepared; the treasure houses of all good things lie open. The Kingdom of Heaven has been prepared for you from all eternity!

St. Boniface First Communion Brunch

On Saturday, March 12, the St. Boniface Religious Education Program held a First Communion Family Brunch to celebrate the upcoming Sacrament with our children and to share in fellowship together. About 90 parents, children and other family members and friends attended the brunch, where they were treated to delicious breakfast foods prepared by Sea Cliff Bagel Co., and fun and creative arts and crafts for them to remember the day. Karen Croce, DRE, welcomed everyone and Deacon Tom Fox led us in grace before our meal and a special blessing on the children who are about to receive their First Holy Communion. Please pray for the children of our parish who will be making their First Holy Communion in April. We would like to thank Vinnie & Maria Cefalu and Matthew Blass from the Sea Cliff Bagel Co. for the wonderful breakfast (even accommodating 20 last‐minute RSVPs!) and the Morra Family for donating water and juices and helping with setup. Special thanks also to: Kelly Rechsteiner, Cate Nolan, Christine Varasano ‐ the arts & crafts “dream team” who created the “Who helped you prepare for First Communion?” mobile and helped the children make them; Andrea LoPresti and Cindy Peraica ‐ who decorated the gym, making it special for our families; Lori Kilada, Claudette Rowell, Lorraine O’Sullivan, Joe Morra, Patrick Reynolds, Ethan Kilada ‐ food service with a smile; Arlyn Dimatulac, Mike Reynolds, Karen Croce ‐ the super clean up crew!

Easter Sunday, 2016

Easter Egg Hunt

Do what you can to be a force for healing and reconciliation, but realize no one can do it alone.

Wednesday, April 6

Second Sunday of Easter, April 3, 2016 This year, which the church dedicates to the mystery of divine mercy, today’s feast is even more important than usual. In a world full of tragedy and suffering, how do we participate in the revelation of God’s mercy? Henri Nouwen spoke to this question in The Genesee Diary. He recognized that in our prayer for the world, we become the world, lifting up the needs of millions and delivering them into God’s presence. We can’t embrace a world in pain, but God can, Nouwen wrote. Make the nightly news a prayer hour in your home.

Monday, April 4

Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord For centuries England celebrated the feast of the Annunciation as “Lady Day” (as in “Our Lady”), and curiously the day also marked the beginning of the English legal year, when taxes were due and long‐ term contracts were renewed. The date for Annunciation (normally March 25 but a moveable feast depending on the timing of Lent) roughly corresponds to the spring equinox, when day and night are equal in length, so perhaps that seemed like a good time to start a new calendar cycle. Whatever the reason, today remains a day of new beginnings, the day Mary learned she would bear a very special child. Reason enough to consider this to be a day for new beginnings in your own spiritual journey. Ring in the new!

Feast of St. Vincent Ferrer, priest The years around 1400 were rough ones to be a Catholic. The Western Schism (1378‐1418) divided Roman Catholicism between two, and eventually three, claimants to the papacy. Dominican Vincent Ferrer, a gifted missionary during this time of trial, tried his hand at uniting the divided church, but the differences were too great for any one person to heal. He later said the experience had such a depressing effect on him as to seriously damage his health. Differences and divisions left unattended, whether in a faith community, a family, or an organization, are bad for our health and well‐being.

Much of Christianity has been styled as judgment over a devil‐ridden society. When 18th‐century minister Jonathan Edwards delivered his most famous sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” he warned against the horrors of hell and the danger of being lost for eternity. Members of the assembly interrupted Edwards repeatedly asking, “What can I do to be saved?” They heard little consolation in the message. Our complete gospel witness must include John’s glorious, magni icent bottom line: Jesus came to save, not to accuse.

Thursday, April 7

Feast of St. John Baptist de la Salle, priest We all had that special teacher, or a few select teachers, who reached us in a lasting way, perhaps inspiring us to choose the vocation we have today or helping us believe in ourselves when we had our doubts. Maybe it was a supportive pat on the back when we struggled on a test or had a family problem. “To touch the hearts of your students is the greatest miracle you can perform,” said John Baptist de la Salle, who dedicated much of his life to educating poor students in France around 1700 and is today the patron saint of teachers. Whose heart will you touch with your own life’s work?

Friday, April 8

The ish has been a symbol of Christ and of Christianity for the entirety of church history. Many of the irst disciples were ishermen. One of Jesus’ most astounding miracles was feeding a multitude with loaves and ishes. The Greek word for ish is an acronym for “Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior.” The sign of the ish was used as a secret marking by early Christians to avoid persecution. This water‐ dwelling being also alludes to Baptism. Meditate on the many facets of the ish symbol while answering Jesus’ call to be “ ishers” of men and women.

Saturday, April 9

Theory can get in the way of practice, especially when it comes to our faith. “I don’t preach a social gospel; I preach the gospel, period,” Desmond Tutu said. “The gospel . . . is concerned for the whole person. When people were hungry, Jesus didn’t ask, ‘Now is that political or social?’ He said, ‘I will feed you.’ Because the good news to a hungry person is bread.” Perfecting the way we live the gospel is the challenge of a lifetime. It means moving beyond semantics to action. Faith, after all, is lived out—
