Today as we celebrate the feast of Easter we ind the challenge of also seeing and believing the resurrection that comes through our own lives of self‐sacri ice which brings new life to others. O FELIX CULPA O Felix Culpa. O Happy Fault! O necessary sin of Adam which gained for us so great a Redeemer! These are some of the words to the beautiful Exultet (Easter Proclamation) that is chanted solemnly at the start of the Easter Vigil service in Catholic Churches around the world on Holy Saturday night. It seems strange that we think of Adam and Eve’s sin as something to rejoice about; after all, this act of disobedience by the irst human beings caused what becomes known as “the fall.” Why then does the Church through her liturgy dare to speak of this lagrant act of disobedience as a happy fault or necessary sin? The reason the Church praises this depraved act is because it led to an eventual happy outcome. This eventual happy outcome which took centuries to come to fruition is what we celebrated this past week (Holy Week) the passion and death of Christ and which comes to a culmination today, Easter Sunday, Jesus Christ’s glorious Resurrection from the dead and the hope and promise of our own entrance into eternal life with Him someday! There is an expression often used in theological circles and communities of faith “God writes straight with crooked lines.” A good that lowed from man’s fallen state is the act of redemption: Jesus’ death and resurrection and the hope of heaven! Pope Gregory the Great (540‐604 AD) stated, “ and certainly, unless Adam had not sinned it would not have behooved our Redeemer to take on human lesh” and St. Frances DeSales (1567—1627 AD) wrote: “our loss has been our gain, since human nature has received more gifts of grace from its redemption by its Savior than it would have received from the innocence of Adam, if he indeed, preserved it.” Through Christ’s sel less act of love on the cross we are redeemed, and as such, we have been restored to grace in a way far surpassing in glory what we could have known had there been no fall. We come to know God in a deeper, fuller and richer way because of Jesus Christ. By our Baptism, the Son has made us integral members of His Mystical Body! St. Augustine says, “With Christ in His Mystical Body, we constitute the whole Christ. St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians tells us “the Church, which is His Body, is the fullness of Him who ills all in all.” The private prayer said by the priest/deacon when the water and wine are mingled helps to further illustrate this point. “Through the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled Himself to share in our humanity.” In essence, we become partakers of the divine nature! The act of redemption by Jesus Christ exalts our human nature; we become sharers in God’s Divine nature! Had Adam and Eve not sinned we would not be raised to such a grace illed state! Dom Bruno Webb, and English Benedictine monk and priest says it well, “What God has done and will do for us, instead of restoring man (humanity) to what he had been, God has bent down from eternity, taking him into His arms and pressing him to His heart in an embrace so close that the gulf between creature and Creator has been bridged, God and human henceforth forming in the order of grace, a single being, the whole Christ!” May the peace of the Risen Christ, ill your hearts and homes this Easter Season! This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad, Alleluia! Alleluia! Saint Paul tells us that In Christ Jesus you are a new creation! Today we know with the mind of faith and feel in our hearts illed with joy how true that is and whence comes this wondrous and unique gift. It is God’s gift that shows the boundless love He has for us when in the fullness of time He sent His Son, born of a woman. Without the obedient love of the Son who became one like us in all things but sin, we could never have been saved in the extraordinary way that in fact we are saved. We have been saved by one like us. That means that all we are and all that we experience on this earth has been embraced by Jesus, the God‐Man. He alone could save us as Son of God. He alone, as fully human as we all are, could transform us, with whom He shares our humanity, by offering us the way to share in His divinity. Nailed to the cross, He overcame that ancient curse of universal death. For His death became the passage way that destroys death and opens the path to eternal life for us and for all humankind. Now He breaks the bonds of death by breaking forth from the tomb in His glori ied state. Now the angels can say to the irst apostles, Why look among the dead for one who is living? He is not here among the dead! He has risen as He said! Nicodemus once asked Jesus How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother’s womb and be born again, can he? No, Nicodemus, that is true. But Jesus has made the Holy Sepulchre His tomb to be the womb from which He comes forth to the glori ied state that He shares with us. We who have entered into the font of Baptism and emerged from the waters of Baptism are His new creation sharing the life of the One Who today we truly proclaim God’s Son, the Victor over sin and death, the Savior of all humankind. As His new creation, Paul rightly calls us Ambassadors of Christ. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, on this Easter Day as we rejoice, I would like to call us all to re‐commit ourselves to being Ministers of Reconciliation in our families and our communities but especially in our Church and in our nation. Too many members of our Church engage in polemic and seek to divide us as if bishops are persecutors of the laity or consecrated women and men are at odds with priests and pastors. These attitudes and these divisions deny the new creation the Risen Christ has given us. Our nation has sunk into a new low in public discourse when political leaders and pressure groups ridicule and label one another or accuse those who disagree with the prevailing forces as being “haters” and “phobic”. May all of us on Easter Sunday, in the presence of the Risen Christ, at Mass, in our homes and in our hearts, put aside those attitudes and commit ourselves to the ministry of reconciliation, eschewing the tawdry and the degrading, and re‐af irming the respect and dignity of all, for HE came to be the Savior of all Humankind and today in our hearts and in our world, we proclaim JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN AND HE IS LORD FOREVER AND EVER. Solemnity of the Resurrection of the Lord Sunday, March 27, 2016 Mary Magdalene is often confused with other women named Mary in the gospels (there were many!). But there are things we know for sure about this speci ic Mary: She was a prominent follower of Jesus, she was present at his Cruci ixion and burial, she was the irst to discover his tomb empty, and she was the irst to see him after his Resurrection. Whatever else about her life, the most important thing she did was bear witness to Christ and inform others that he has risen. It’s the most important thing you can do, too. Monday, March 28 Ever feel fear and joy in the same breath? New parents say when they irst hold their newborn in their arms something like that happens. Starting a new job or signing papers for a new home might bring a similar combination of a lump in the throat and a fast‐beating heart. With the drama and passion of Holy Week behind us, we live in the dawn of Easter Resurrection. Pope Francis urges us to see the signs of the Risen Lord all around us in this season and open our hearts “to a present that is full of the future.” We do so with wonder and awe, a mix of joy and fear. Jesus gave his all—now it’s our turn! Tuesday, March 29 Father James Martin in his book Jesus: A Pilgrimage observes that the “Resurrection appearances show that the Risen Christ understood what each of the disciples needed in order to believe.” For Mary Magdalene, she “needed to hear her name.” From that point forward she believed and went to tell the other disciples about the Resurrection, earning her the title “Apostle to the Apostles.” Each of us needs something different to bolster our belief; luckily, our Savior meets us where we’re at and, in the process, invites us deeper into the mystery and the miracle that are faith and Resurrection. Wednesday, March 30 The Feast of the Epiphany was celebrated back in January, commemorating the Magi’s visit to the infant Jesus. It’s called Epiphany because the word’s original meaning is “appearance.” (And this one came complete with a big, bright star!) An
epiphany has come to mean a revealing moment or a sudden realization. Despite all the foreshadowing, going back to Jesus’ birth and long before, it isn’t until after the Resurrection that Christ’s followers had epiphanies about what took place and what it all meant. Open your eyes, too, to the light of truth they experienced. Thursday, March 31 On many a day, fear keeps us bound in self‐ absorption and is a huge waste of time. It can keep you from knowing God better and stunt your growth in faith. If you keep the door closed, what do you miss? If you let go of fear, what might happen? If you listen and talk to God every day, what might God say? If you surrender control, where will God take you? Theologian Gustavo Gutierrez reminds us that the “initiative in encounter belongs to the Lord. But if we open the door of our being to him, we shall share his life.” What is it that you fear and worry about today? Can you open the door and give it to God? Friday, April 1 An often‐heard refrain at Easter—“The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone”—is a good summary of Jesus’ life and mission. In any stone construction, the cornerstone or foundation stone is critical because if it is not “true”—perfectly even and level—the whole structure might collapse. The religious leaders of his day regularly rejected Jesus because, in their eyes, Jesus was unsuitable, not what a Messiah “should be.” It’s the ultimate irony. Is your foundation stone “true”? Does it bear the weight of your life? Saturday, April 2 As of the beginning of Lent, the word “Alleluia” was silenced—neither sung nor spoken. At Easter, however, the word is resurrected and echoes all through the season. But what does it mean? It’s Hebrew, a one‐word contraction of “Praise ye the Lord.” Saint Augustine wrote, “We are the Easter people, and Alleluia is our song.” For some, it’s like a blare of trumpets in a single word of exuberant joy and faith, while for others it is a quiet mantra repeating itself in silent prayer.
