There is an Advent spirit in the heart of every human person. It is one of longing, of yearning for a fulfillment that somehow lies beyond ourselves; for we long for the coming of the Lord. As you put your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, your heart will discover the true meaning of Christmas as you help those who are suffering and poor to long for the coming of the Lord.
When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you give hope to your neighbors who have nothing. To give thanks for all that God has given to you, have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Call the parish center at 676-0676 for details.

From the Pastor’s Desk
MAKE A JOYFUL SOUND UNTO THE LORD “Sing, Sing a Song” was a popular soft rock tune performed by the Carpenters in the early 1970’s. The lyrics are quite simple and extol and praise the values of singing, and encourage all to sing whether they have good voices or not. Since Vatican II, the Church has introduced the value of congregational singing and many Catholics seem to enjoy worshipping God through song. That is wonderful because like St. Augustine says, “he [she] who sings, prays twice!” Singing, is indeed, a beautiful way to worship God. Singing together is not only a form of prayer, but also has several emotional and psychological benefits as well. According to a recent article in Time magazine, singing changes the brain. According to the article when people sing musical vibrations move through the person and that alters people’s physical and emotional landscape. Simply put, it makes us feel better. Think about small children. Most of us have either been sung to by a loving mother or other caring adult at some point in our youth to soothe and calm us when we were upset or frightened about something. If this was not the case for you, perhaps you have seen this being done by someone else to a child and how usually the child stops crying or fussing. Singing or being sung to has great power to change our emotions from sad and negative to happy and hopefully calmer. Researchers have been hard at work trying to explain why it has such a calming, soothing, peaceful effects, yet, has equally energizing and life giving effects on us. What researchers are concluding is that singing is like an infusion of the perfect tranquilizer,
the kind that both soothes our nerves and simultaneously elevates our spirits. This for us is a win, win situation in our stress filled and busy world, and for us as Christians it is a spiritual endeavor as well because like the Psalm says, Sing a New Song to the Lord, (Psalm 96) or Break into Song and Sing Praise (Psalm 98). The virtues of singing are found throughout the Hebrew Scriptures as well as the New Testament. Mary’s Magnificat is ultimately a song of praise! Group singing for those who have done it, is the most exhilarating and transformative of all because it takes something incredibly intimate and personal, a sound that begins inside of the person and ultimately shares it with a room full of people and then comes back as something even more exhilarating and thrilling then when it first started and that is called harmony. Research further shows that even if someone’s voice is only mediocre, the health benefits are worth their weight in gold because our bodies produce lower amounts of cortisol and our heart rates are raised. Here at St. Boniface, we are blessed with a talented and competent Music Ministry under the direction of Jeffery Schneider. Our cantors and musicians are here to lead us in song and encourage us to sing. I am sure they will agree with me that they are NOT here to perform but assist us in giving glory and praise to our God, Jesus Christ. So don’t be afraid; SING OUT LOUD AND MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE UNTO THE LORD! — Fr. Kevin

Sunday, November 27, 2016 First Sunday of Advent Welcome new horizons Rise and shine! It can be hard as we move through life to recognize that every moment offers us a chance for a new beginning. As Paul writes to the Romans, “It is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” As Advent begins, a new liturgical year is upon us. Today is the beginning of something new. We have the chance to begin this New Year wide awake to the world around us. Open your eyes and let Christ’s Light stream in! Monday, November 28 Stretch your heart and mind On the spiritual journey, it can be easy to think that you can figure everything out, that your mind is the only tool you need. On the journey of life, though, you have to engage the heart. Any other way is, according to contemplative author Cynthia Bourgeault, “like trying to play a violin with a saw.” Faith stretches far beyond what our minds can comprehend. As you begin this Advent, how might you trust in the glory of God that is coming? May your heart and mind be stretched by the answer that you find! Tuesday, November 29 Advent weekday Keep your Christmas presence under wraps This Advent, try experiencing Christmas in a more gradual way. Instead of jumping into Christmas the day after Thanksgiving, allow the symbols, rich colors, poetry, and music of Advent to wash over you slowly during these weeks. Take time to contemplate the pillars of Advent: Isaiah stoking humanity’s longing for the Redeemer, Mary bringing Jesus into history, and John the Baptist urging us to begin a new life. Maybe even put up your Christmas tree later than usual, closer to Christmas Eve. If you experience “the holidays” as an exhausting trial, let Advent calm you. Let its mystery refocus your life and make you hungry for God. Wednesday, November 30 Feast of St. Andrew, apostle Raise up the cross Tradition says that Saint Andrew died crucified on an “X” shaped cross. Saint Andrew’s Cross is best-known for its depiction on the Scottish flag. According to legend, while praying on the eve of battle, King Oengus II promised that if victory was granted, he would name Saint Andrew as the patron saint of Scotland, which is why he is honored on the flag. Pray that Saint Andrew intercedes for victory in our daily struggles. Thursday, December 1 Advent weekday Pray for a “Day without AIDS” Since 1988, December 1 has been recognized as World AIDS Day. The following year, the first “Day without Art” was organized. More than 800 arts organizations, museums, and galleries throughout the United States covered works of art and instead displayed information about HIV. Globally there are an estimated 34 million people who have the HIV virus. Since 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS. Let’s remember all those with AIDS-related illnesses, past and present. Let’s pray for them and for those who work tirelessly to care for them and to find a cure.
Friday, December 2 Advent weekday Time to be truly free, at last Legalized slavery was abolished by the end of the 19th century, but sadly it still flourishes underground. Today is the annual commemoration of the United Nation’s International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. Every year, thousands of poor and defenseless men, women, and children fall into the hands of human traffickers who expose them to sexual exploitation, forced labor, warfare, and even removal of vital organs. Jesus came to set us free; let’s do our part to see that the world hears that message loud and clear by working to protect victims of human trafficking. Saturday, December 3 Memorial of St. Francis Xavier, priest Strong beyond their numbers Saint Francis Xavier was a seasoned missionary who traveled to India, China, and other places in Asia. He is the first Christian missionary to go to Japan. He wrote that the Japanese were the “best people yet discovered.” He found them kind and polite, yet the work of evangelization was difficult in Japan. When Saint Francis left two years later, Japan had some 2,000 new Christians. Today the number of Catholics in Japan is still small, representing less than 0.5 percent of the population. Let’s remember them today and remember Catholics in all in those places where they represent a small minority.
