From the Pastor’s Desk A RUDE AWAKENING

Back in the mid 1980’s while I was pursuing a Graduate Degree at Queens College, I had a part time job in the Training and Human Resources Department of The Dime Savings Bank of New York. It was a very convenient and rather prestigious job for someone who only worked part time three nights a week and every other Saturday. There were two other older men who also worked in the Department as Training Instructors as well, and they also held full time jobs as English teachers in public school districts. The three of us were responsible for training and supervising new bank tellers and customer service representatives. We were not best friends and we did not socialize with each other after work, but I suppose we were good acquaintances and did a fair amount of sharing about our families and personal lives especially during break time. One day one of the gentlemen, named Jerry, shared how he was a fallen away Catholic and no longer practiced his faith, but when he was in high school he was a devout Catholic and even gave serious thought to be a priest. In fact, he went as far as to say, he no longer believed there was a God, and that the Church should stay out of the public arena! His remarks were spoken in reply to a comment I made about my desire to be a priest. I must admit that I was a bit scandalized by his statements. Looking back, he was probably one of the first people I met that had such strong feelings against God and the Church. It certainly was an eye opening experience for me. However, it got worse and I was shocked a bit more when the other man we worked with spoke up and forcefully and almost triumphantly proclaimed that he and his wife had an abortion. His exact words were “Esther and I were expecting a child and we didn’t want it; so we had an abortion!” His tone of speech and cavalier attitude towards human life were alarming to me. Just the way his words were spoken to me… “We didn’t want it, so we had an

abortion.” It sounded as if he were simply disposing of an old pair of shoes and other form of refuse. I never forgot either of these two conversations, and I suppose I lost some of my innocence and naivete that day back in 1985. I tell these two stories because today all over the United States is Respect Life Sunday, and the Catholic Church is squarely and definitively in the forefront of supporting this cause. All of us need to be realists and confront the notion that there is a serious threat to human life in all forms. Pope St. John Paul II referred to this as The Culture of Death. Abortion is NOT the only issue, however, physician assisted suicide is also a real and imminent problem. Several states, including Oregon now endorse one’s right to terminate his/her own life. Numerous other forms of a culture of death pervade our society such as terrorism, murders, and a blatant and general disregard for the dignity of the human person. ALL BELIEVERS IN GOD need to be concerned with issues such as basic and affordable health care and the fact that many people flee oppressive and evil governments that trample upon the rights of basic human dignity. Here at St. Boniface during the month of October we will pray the Rosary within the context of Eucharistic Adoration several times during the month of October for Pro-life and a deeper appreciation for human dignity. These services will be held Saturday October 1 and all Wednesdays of October at 7 PM in Church and on Sunday October 30 at 3 PM in front of the shrine outside of Church. I urge you on this RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY to attend these events and to support the Pro-life efforts of the Church and our own Diocese. —Fr. Kevin

Take Five for Faith 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time: October 2 Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago called life a “seamless garment,” referring to the “tunic without seam” stripped from Jesus at his Crucifixion to remind us that a pro-life position is broader than vigorously protecting the life of the unborn. He called people to also oppose capital punishment, euthanasia, economic injustice, and unjust war. In an election year, one may wish to vote on the basis of a single issue, but the Catholic citizen should prayerfully and thoughtfully consider the whole picture. Pope Francis said, “Politics . . . though often denigrated, remains a lofty vocation and one of the highest forms of charity, inasmuch as it seeks the common good.” Vote for those who embody this vision. Monday, October 3 We live in the midst of a terrible refugee crisis. Migrants by the millions are fleeing war, drought, famine, dead-end economies, drug gang violence, and terrorism. Yet, as Jessey Carey points out in Relevant magazine, nearly half of Christians recently polled expressed fear about the idea of refugees coming into the United States. One only needs to tune into political coverage to hear distrust and even hostility in discussions about refugees. But our faith tradition is clear on the mandate to help the stranger, the foreigner, to remember that we too were once “strangers in a strange land.” Don’t just admire the Good Samaritan, be that good Samaritan! Tuesday, October 4 Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi In 1979, Pope John Paul II declared Saint Francis the patron saint of ecology. In 1990, he said that Francis “offers Christians an example of genuine and deep respect for the integrity of creation. . . . As a friend of the poor who was loved by God’s creatures, Saint Francis invited all of creation— animals, plants, natural forces, even Brother Sun and Sister Moon—to give honor and praise to the Lord.” Be a friend of the environment on this day dedicated to its patron. Wednesday, October 5 If you want to get to know someone better or discuss something with a friend, you find a comfortable setting where you can talk. It’s no different when you want to talk and listen to God.

5

You find a site that feels inviting and secure so that it’s easier to tell God what’s on your mind and in your heart. Religious educators suggest a “prayer corner” with some sacred objects and a copy of the Bible. If you don’t already have one, make a prayer corner somewhere in your home. Thursday, October 6 Memorial of Blessed Marie-Rose Durocher At 18, Rose Marie Durocher began to act as housekeeper for her brother, a priest. Her generosity and kindness earned her the nickname, the “Saint of Beloeil” (a district near Montreal). Later she formed a community of sisters using her natural compassion, intelligence, strong will, and common sense. You’d recognize such a woman on the street as a saint, not because of a halo but by the good she does. You are called to be nothing less than a saint like her. Saints are not made first by piety, but by walking in Christ’s footsteps and abandoning what gets in the way. You can do that much, can’t you? Friday, October 7 Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary It’s one of the most memorable visits in history: An angel greets a young girl and says, “Blessed are you among women.” And so she is, because Mary trusts God’s word to her will be fulfilled. In this she follows in the footsteps of her great father in faith, Abraham. But Mary’s not just a follower. She’s also a leader, offering her maternity to the church as the first best example of discipleship. When we pray the Rosary, we study in the school of Mary. Spend a decade of the rosary with your Mother today. Saturday, October 8 Good news arrives at our doorstep, out of the blue and marvelous. A beloved visitor comes to lend support, enfolding us in a happy embrace. A baby is added to the family circle, buoying up our hearts. A child shows the first signs of promise, and we’re in awe of what the future may hold. One who seemed lost to us is gratefully restored, and we all learn important lessons from the separation. These are the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. Consider praying them this week in honor of Rosary Month. ©2015 by TrueQuest Communications. All rights reserved. St. Vincent de Paul Society

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells his disciples, “When you have done all you have been commanded, say: We are unprofitable servants; we have only done what we were obliged to do.” This week, please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to bring the love and mercy of Jesus to those who feel left out and abandoned, for indeed we are only doing “what we are obliged to do”. Please say a prayer for those who have no one to pray for them as you place your donation in the poor box. Furniture donations are also always welcome. Please call 822-3132 for details. Have you considered answering the call to help the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Call the parish center at 676-0676 for more information about how you can become a more communal part of your parish.
