News Family Mass: Father Kevin is happy to
introduce the 10:30am Family Mass! The first Family mass will be held on October 16. The purpose of the family mass is to get the children to be actively involved in the liturgy. We are forming a committee to facilitate the Family Mass each week. Responsibilities include guiding children in performing the following tasks: lectoring, bringing up the offertory, handing out bulletins and mass booklets. A meeting will be held with committee members in September. If you are interested in being on the committee please contact Mary Ellen at chrisnmikesmom@optonline.net.
Family Breakfast: On the first Sunday of every month, after the 10:30am Mass, there will be a breakfast gathering. Parishioners will donate breakfast items to the breakfast such as: orange juice, paper goods, fruit cup, yogurt, munchkins, bagels, rolls, butter, etc. It will be the committee’s responsibility to set up and organize the breakfast. From the Pastor’s Desk QUESTIONS DURING A COCKTAIL HOUR You may remember that I went away in early August to Baltimore for a Professional Development Conference sponsored by the Dominican Fathers on Becoming a More Effective Preacher. Conferences and seminars were held all day and the schedule was quite rigorous and demanding; however, evenings were free for dinner and priestly fraternity. Msgr. James McDonald, Pastor of St. Aidan, Fr. John McCartney, Pastor of St. Mary’s in Roslyn and I were seated enjoying a pre-dinner cocktail at Phillips Crab House in the Inner Harbor when two young men approached us with an important question. They knew we were priests because we were dressed in black suits with Roman Collars. They asked us if it was true as to whether Pope Francis had done away with the belief that hell exists, and they were wondering, and hoping I suppose that this, was indeed the case. I must admit we were surprised that two young men who were probably no more than 22 or 23 years old were worried or interested in the notion of hell and whether Francis had made a change in Church teaching. We were also happy that they actually took the time and felt comfortable enough to approach three priests, all of whom were at least twice there age to ask us the question. It was also surprising because they told us they were Protestant, and we know Protestants DO NOT accept the teaching of the Holy Father. Of course we told them Francis made NO SUCH STATEMENT, nor can he ever. Catholics and non-Catholics alike often have asked me if the Pope is the supreme head of the Church, why can’t he just make changes on his own? The answer is simple if Jesus said it, the teaching cannot be changed. All one has to do is look at Holy
Scripture, take Matt. 25 for example. Jesus speaks about the fate of those who ignored their brothers and sisters in this earthly life: “Depart from me you cursed, into the everlasting fires prepared for the devil and all his angels.” If Jesus said it, the logic goes, the Church cannot change it! As Catholics we believe Holy Scripture is inspired by God, and thus the writings of Scripture are DIVINELY REVEALED. Furthermore, Jesus is God and so for Christians, Jesus is the fullness of Divine Revelation. Many people will remember the noted television evangelist and preacher Rev. Dr. Billy Graham. He was a non-Catholic who preached a good number of sermons about Hell. His sermons were very clear and definitive about the existence of hell. He was an evangelical Protestant and they disagree vehemently with Catholics on many points, yet they are one with us about accepting the existence of hell as taught by Jesus Christ and proclaimed by His Holy Catholic Church. Personally, I do not spend a lot of time fretting over the notion of hell; I much prefer to mediate and rejoice over the infinite mercy of our loving God. Stay close to Jesus Christ and His Church, and then you will have no need to worry about hell. This weekend we celebrate Catechetical Sunday and we honor and salute all teachers of Religious Education, whether in Catholic Schools or our own Parish Religious Education Program. These individuals labor tirelessly to teach our young people about Jesus Christ and help them achieve and strive for their ETERNAL SALAVTION, life with Our Lord FOREVER! —Fr. Kevin
Remembering and Caring for our Senior Priests

Do you ever think about a favorite Pastor or Parish Priest and wonder how they are and where they may be living? Well, for 14 of our Senior Priests who are living at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility in Amityville, life is good and sometimes very busy. As an example, Father Martin Hall had spent many years in Notre Dame in New Hyde Park before he was assigned as Associate Pastor at St. Bernard’s in Levittown, where he was an important part of that Parish community. Father Hall, however, is also fondly remembered for being instrumental to the establishment of the Apostolate for the Deaf. Born to parents who were deaf, Father Hall learned how to sign at a very early age and intimately understood how important it was for Catholics with hearing impairments to be able to practice and be connected to their faith and their church. Although retired, Father Hall continues to be involved with that ministry and frequently joins Monsignor Tom Costa, Vicar of Senior Priests, when he says Mass for people with hearing impairments, either at St. Ignatius Loyola, on the 1st Sunday of every month, or at St. Frances de Chantal on the 3rd Sunday of every month. Father Hall is always met with great fondness and affection. Many members of the St. Pius Community also continue their ministry much closer to home. Father Marty Klein and a number of other retired priests joyfully celebrate Mass on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of every month for all of the lay residents of Dominican Village and they also lead Holy Hour prayers every Friday evening and offer Reconciliation during the Advent and Lenten seasons. While these important services for the Lay residents of Dominican Village help bring Christ’s message of love and service to many people who may not be able to attend Mass outside, they also allow our Senior Priests to work directly with the people that they have devoted their entire lives to serving. “Still on duty” St. Pius X provides the opportunity for our senior priests residing there to remain fully engaged members of our Diocesan community, serving as our teachers, counselors, and spiritual leaders.

Middle School Peer Mediation: Middle School Student Advisors for the Elementary Students in resolving peer conflicts. Kind H.E.A.R.T. Enrichment – I will visit 1st and 2nd Grade Students each week to reinforce our program (Help, Encourage, Accept, Respect, Trust others). First Lego League: As part of the STEM Curriculum the Third Grade Students will explore a real-world scientific problem and guided by their Coaches will construct a model of what they have learned using LEGO elements. In the Spring they will participate in an Expo and have the opportunity to meet students from other schools to share ideas. Norway Project: Eighth Grade Students will team up with Eighth Grade Students in Norway to address common global concerns. Thanks to modern technology they will Skype to discuss and ultimately decide on a common project to work on. I will keep you updated as this program evolves. Take Five for Faith 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 18 Faith is lived. But it’s also prayed. Today Catechetical Sunday considers the theme, “Prayer: the Faith Prayed.” Perhaps the most distinguishing thing we Catholics do is gather to pray: at Mass and sacraments, the blessing before meals, the Liturgy of the Hours, or to share a Rosary. Prayer isn’t always formal or complex. Saint Therese of Lisieux called prayer a surge of the heart, a simple look toward heaven. Saint Francis de Sales wittily declared, “Every one of us needs half an hour of prayer each day except when we’re busy—then we need an hour.” Renew your commitment to daily prayer. Monday, September 19 Memorial of St. Januarius, bishop, martyr Januarius, patron saint of Naples and a third-century bishop, was martyred during one of the persecutions of Christians common in the ancient Roman empire. Today, a cathedral in Naples contains a vial kept in a reliquary said to hold some of the saint’s congealed blood. Three times a year the vial is removed and the blood liquefies. In March 2015 during Pope Francis’ visit to Naples, the blood half liquefied when the pope kissed the reliquary. Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe of Naples declared, “The blood has half liquefied, which shows that Saint Januarius loves our pope and Naples.” Pope Francis responded, “We can see the saint only half loves us. We must all spread the word, so that he loves us more!” Let’s help spread the word! Tuesday, September 20 Memorial of St. Andrew Kin Tae-Gon, priest, and St. Paul Chong Ha-Sang and companions/martyrs Martyrdom means bearing witness to the truth with one’s death. There have been a multitude of Christians—from the first martyr Saint Stephen up to the present—who have been willing to die rather than give up their beliefs. Although most Christians aren’t tested to the point of making this ultimate sacrifice, each still must choose to take up the cross and endure hardship and struggle. When faced with challenges, look to the martyrs for strength and support in keeping the faith. Wednesday, September 21 Feast of St. Matthew, apostle and evangelist History has dimmed some of what we know about Matthew the Apostle. He may or may not have been the author of the gospel that bears his name. Possibly
he was called Levi. Probably he was martyred but we are not sure. And we do not know when he died or where he is buried. What we do know is that Matthew was one of the first apostles and before that, he had been a tax collector. Those two facts tell us that Jesus was not afraid to reach out to those who were looked down upon, the scorned and the outcasts. He calls those who are imperfect to come and follow him. So you and I have no excuse. We may feel we are not worthy, but we cannot hide behind that. All are called to follow. Thursday, September 22 To us, everyday life may sometimes feel mundane, but not to God. “It is possible that God says every morning, ‘Do it again’ to the sun; and every evening, ‘Do it again’ to the moon,” G.K. Chesterton wrote. “It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them.” Perhaps to God, all things are new—beautiful creations set to dazzle the world. Try to enter each day in the same mindset, ready for goodness and steeped in grace. Friday, September 23 Memorial of St. Pius of Pietrelcina, priest Few American Catholics would recognize the name “Pius of Pietrelcina,” but say “Padre Pio” and eyes light up with reverence. Given the name Pio (Pius) when he became a Capuchin Franciscan, he is often venerated as having the sacred stigmata, the marks of Jesus’ Passion on his own body. The church maintains neutrality over miraculous signs, but there is no argument over Padre Pio’s kindness, compassion, and mercy—all for the love of Christ. Such compassion is a genuine miracle in our times, when all of us are wounded—not by the marks of Christ, but by hardness of heart. Perform a miracle today—soften your heart. Saturday, September 24 Mary, the mother of God, the mother of the church, the mother of all living—your mother—like any good mother, is on her children’s side. Parish Registration: We welcome all new members of our parish family. We ask all parishioners to welcome and invite new neighbors and their families to become a part of St. Boniface Martyr Parish. Marriage: Couples wishing to be married should call
the parish center before any other arrangements are made. A minimum of six months is needed for marriage preparations.
Baptism: Parents wishing to present a child for
Baptism should be registered members of St. Boniface Martyr Parish. Parents are required to have a Baptism Preparation Interview and attend a Baptism class. Baptisms are celebrated on the last Sunday of the month. Godparents must be fully initiated members of the Catholic Church (having received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist), and provide a sponsor certificate.
